Building Chain Drive Four Wheel Drive For My Next Project - Part 3

Today we are starting a new chain driven 4 wheel drive project. In this video we are making the rear chain drive hubs with 1.5" ID bearings. these hubs are very similar to the rear hubs that I made for the CBR 1000 buggy project, but these hubs are bigger and should be stronger to handle the 32" tall tires.

    • It might on pavement and hard packed dirt. but probably not on the softer dirt, it will probably be light enough that it will sort of drag one wheel and dig up the ground a little bit. it will basically be like any four wheel drive with lockers front and rear. it will have probably a little odd handling characteristics. and it might not be perfect for all types of terrain. but he's going to make it unlockable so he shouldn't have any issues.

      @musicauthority9939@musicauthority9939 Жыл бұрын
    • Dirt is soft enough where the tires will just skid. Plus the front is selectable to be locked or unlocked so that won't be an issue for pavement.

    • I did that using an old ford pinto differential. The spider case was almost completely closed , so I just welded up the two holes and machined a sprocket to fit where the ring gear would go. Turned down the axel stubs for a few thousands friction fit and pressed them into the spider gears. Put a blob of grease on the spiders before assembly…. Never had a problem, drove my “hillbilly quad runner” for at least 20 years. It’s great see what a person can do when they set their mind to it.

  • Tech tip I learned from an old man working at an O'reillys, you can use cheap fuel line that's sold by the foot off a roll in place of vacuum lines, its way overkill for the vacuum pressure and it wont rot out on you like the vacuum lines will, also great for spots that need to be resistant to stuff like mud and small rocks being thrown at it.

You engage 4wd and drive off ramp pins lock the hub, disengage 4wd and the wheel drives the hub and unlocks the ramp pins. Sometimes you may have to use reverse to unlock them if they stick. they called them Automatic hubs.

    @sazafrass@sazafrass Жыл бұрын
    • Yea bad practice. especially on a single pass weld if you tried cleaning that up on the lathe it would just about separate the 2 parts again. There is pretty much no 'excess' material on that weld. Think he did run over the weld on the mating surface between the hub and the Cvs, but they were big multi pass welds and only just looked like he faced them off for clearance.
