  • Honestly? I never hated Effie. Compared to other characters, she's never malicious. It's genuine innocence, not understanding. She hadn't really had the chance to. Yet she chooses to grow instead of turning a blind eye, which she easily could have done.

    • I think for a lot of people she is an uncomfortable mirror. Growing up in the capitol in wealth, with no worries besides personal ones, all the fashion, food- she sees what is happening, she's even part of it, but her life is so comfortable, it's kind of impossible to actually face what is going on. It's easier to see it as an exciting event, bread and circuses. She only starts to realise once she is personally involved (or rather, people she got to care about). That is, unfortunately very human, and we all do it to some degree.

    • Yeah. To me she always reminded me of my relatives and friends who (for example when i came out) started out ignorant and misinformed to a degree where they could be considered as being homophobic, but that in having someone who they care about inform them and seeing the truth, they show they’re a good person who just got misled at some point. She was a model for the ability to change and be introspective about things you have unknowingly allowed to happen

  • It gets even worse when you realize that effie has never done a victory tour before. Like you said, 99.9% of all the kids she's taken to the games died. You can see how calm she is in the first movie. bubbly yes, over the top, yes. But nervous, hell no. She's done reapings a dozen times before, but this victory tour is her first one ever. She's so nervous for everything to be perfect because this may never happen again in her entire career. For the first time, the children she had led to their deaths didn't die and she wants to make sure that everything is going to go perfectly for them

    • I think Peeta is obviously a better person, but I could see someone liking Katniss with Gale because they prefer the "childhood friends and partners in crime turned into lovers" type dynamic over Peeta and Katniss ending up together mostly because of outside forces (basically fake dating). I don't have a strong opinion on the romance of the series, I think it's one of the least interesting plot points in general, but I do think ending up with Peeta was a good thing for Katniss.

Especially since in the books, Katniss's inner monologue makes it VERY obvious that Gale was never thought about romantically at remotely the same level as Peeta. You can really see the division in Mockingjay particularly when Peeta isn't with them in District 13, how vastly differently Katniss and Gale view the rebellion and what they should and shouldn't be doing in regards to the war (and then Gale becomes the Prim Reaper which is a whole other thing lol)

  • "You never get off this train." Now I understand why Haymitch turned to the bottle. Not only does he have PTSD from his own game but he also had to mentor two children that might be killed in a grotesquely violent way, but he also is a celebrity. He has to always be a specific person. Trying to be someone you know you're not would drive you completely bonkers. Alcohol would take the edge off the insanity.

    • Agreed. Not to get uber dark, but I spent 6 years not being myself (I was in an abusive situation, and learned quickly to stop 'being me', because my (now ex)friend decided I was faking my autism.). I woke up one day, got his firearm, and debated who of us would be on the receiving end before I took a 3rd option, packed what little I could into a suitcase, and hiked 60 miles to my home town to go into a shelter. Also, when I was younger, I walked in on my best friend having taken his life, because he could not come out of the closet to his drunkard homophobic father. He got so tired of pretending to be 'normal' and hearing his dad rant about how gays and (insert any minority here) were ruining the country, every day. So I am well aware that trying to be something your not, for years and more, will lead to 1 of 3 things: Drink, drugs, or death.

    • It's not just 2 people. It's 2 people *annually.* I wonder how many people Haymitch has had to "mentor" just to watch them brutally die. He won the games how long ago? At the beginning he is DEDICATED to not getting attached to them and making them hate him, so he could emotionally survive after they were dead.

    • one of my favourite things about Katniss' character development is how she comes to understand, sympathize, and even empathize with Haymitch and her mom - two adults in her life that she, for a time, looked down on for what she perceived as weakness (Haymitch with his drunkenness, her mom with her catatonic depression). But after going through her first Hunger Games, she gets why Haymitch turned to alcohol after years of mentoring children, doomed to die, all on his own, and how her mum struggled with her mental health after going through a traumatic event with no support (Panem hardly has affordable for the poorer residents, let alone mental health support).

And then she goes on a 3 page monologue about why she hates Peeta and having to "put up a show for everyone" when she's with him, and is like, Katniss sweetie that man lost a leg to save you, and he only ask for you to be to him what he is for you; a friend, a security blanket, the only one that can relate to your trauma, but you refuse to do that because that would be accepting that you're in bedt with him?

  • The scene where Peeta paints Rue I think is often misunderstood. In the books they try and cover it up before Katniss gets in there and its only after that she finds out what he did. It wasn't to upset Katniss, it was to basically give the finger to the Capitol and the gamemakers and to honor Rue. It is a scene that I think shows just how much Peeta also hates the Capitol and how the Games and the people in them impacted him.

    @maggie4028@maggie40285 ай бұрын
  • One of my favorite details of the scene when Katniss hangs Seneca Crane, is that in the books, Peeta's painting of Rue wasn't intended for Katniss. It was intended for the gamemakers, to send them a message, that they STILL don't own him. Katniss had to wait a really long time for her turn because the gamemakers tried to scrub the painting away, failed, and ultimately just covered it up. Katniss went in and uncovered it, seeing the painting, and resolved to follow Peeta's example and send the gamemakers a message of her own. It's a great evolution of the first book/movie, when Peeta tells her he wants to still die as HIM, to show that they don't OWN him, and Katniss admits she can't afford to think like that. Now, she's inspired by his defiance to defy in her own way, and it's always been one of my favorite parts of her character from the books. I think it's still beautiful in the movies but doesn't land quite the same, imo.

Even though not all the tributes are in on the plan to overthrow the Capitol, they are united in this moment to try and call off the games. Everyone in this group has gone through this song and dance. They have experience with playing to the audience and presenting themselves as people who you wouldn’t want to say goodbye to. I think the Hunger Games are largely dismissed as anything serious because they're "teen" books and movies, but I think they're actually a pretty scathing rebuke of where our society could be headed right now. One thing you didn't touch on, though (at least as of 14:56) is that everything Plutarch did while they were in the arena was to help Katniss and Peeta. Even spinning the cornucopia island around was to stop the sneak attack on them.

She wants to save Peeta in CF because she feels guilty that he's the reason she survived the games in HG, she feels like she owes him something. She doesn't really believe he loves her and that he, like she was, was doing/saying things only so they would be able to survive the games. Same with giving money to the families of the fallen tributes in 11. She cared about Rue and felt guilty that she (in her mind) let her get killed. She felt she owed Thresh for saving her from Clove and sparing her life. Idk if she feels she DESERVES to kill Snow or that she just really really wants to after all the things he's done. She "demands special treatment" from Coin, again, for Peeta. Because she had decided that her debt with him would be settled had she gotten him out in CF. Now he's in the Capitol being tortured because it was more important that Katniss survive to be the Mockingjay. She feels responsible, like she failed him again and will never stop owing him. In the books it feels like she does everything transactionally, not selfishly, because she (and everyone in 12) has been in survival mode her entire life it doesn't make sense for anyone to do anything kind for her simply because they care about her. To her there always has to be an ulterior motive or something she has to do in return to make them even. She's constantly consumed by guilt.

She also feels guilty that Haymitch basically favored her in the first games because she got some sponsors with his help meanwhile Peeta didn't get any, even when they found each other the parachutes were in Katniss's name, so this time she wants Haymitch to advocate for him.

He sex trafficks 'his' victors and emotionally abuses them through their entire lives by having them be mentors to kids that 99% of the time are gonna die brutal deaths. Snow has no friends, the closest thing he has are possessions, and the new movie/book shows that well. Something that could also be seen in this movie (the way victors usually get treated) through the guy at the party touching Katniss' shoulder lingeringly, and Katniss' snide remark at Finnick ("how do they pay for the pleasure of your company?"). Even Johanna's "how do you feel now that the whole world wants to sleep with you?" comment can be read as a terrifying thing in the context of how victors are used and abused. Would have been interesting if you'd talked about that; would also have been a good thing to remind yourself of when you watch the new movie. Snow's view of the games as entertainment and dying kids as tools to facilitate that entertainment and control is present already at 18.

As a sufferer of PTSD myself... re-watching these movies after I was diagnosed... its difficult. As someone whose had Panic Attacks the aspect ratio change and sound changes when the scene changes to the stadium makes me think of how I feel during my panic attacks... heck it almost induced one in me. Mockingjay while its an all out war movie has a lot to say. There's a lot of symbolism. Susan Collin's puts a lot of good commentary and symbolism into each one of these books about how the children suffer the most, how bad war is, how mental health is important to take care of, and how in the midst of such horrible things... you can find small moments of beauty even during such a horrible time. Katniss should always be with Peeta not Gayle. Gayle was *never* in the games. He would never understand what Katniss went through. Peeta does. Going into the games is the equivalent of fighting in a war. Only the guys you went in with understand the horrors that you've seen. Peeta and Katniss have that kind of bond. It does help that Peeta has had a crush on her for years since they were kids. After the games and the war they are way better suited for each other.

  • STILL TEAM GALE?!?!?!?! Do you not realise how damn good Peeta is for Katniss??? And also just how well their chemistry bloomed and their relationship solidified in this part of the story??? Like put aside the fact it is Liam Hemsworth and the fact that Gale is macho mastery. Katniss, as a girl who has only lived to survive and was thrown into a war she never wanted to be part of, let alone be the pivotal figure of a rebellion on which this war hinged, she would never have known peace with Gale. Gale fed into the war and immersed himself seamlessly into the rebellion action. At no point during Katniss's time as the Mockingjay symbol, felt like she belonged there, and in fact was very against many of the actions the rebellion took to win the war. Not to mention, her character as the unwilling Mockingjay who believed in the ultimate goal but was not happy with the journey to achieve it, was always built as a tool to be used by others with greater plans than herself, and Gale fed into those plans and was a willing conspirator in using her as said tool. It did not matter that it was Katniss. What mattered was what she symbolised. It could have been anyone. And ultimately they succeeded without her and only used her as the final pin in the plot to kill Snow. And once again she recognised what Gale never could have, and that is those fuelling the rebellion would only be the same oppressive system in a different font. MEANWHILE Peeta was only ever thinking about Katniss. He did believe in the higher cause of saving everyone from this authoritarian oppression hellscape yes, and he recognised Katniss was very important to that effort and her actions and natural leadership abilities and genuine compassion could do so much more than he ever could, even if he knew how to play the game. But everything he did was to help Katniss. He saw through the cause and the duty they had as victors and her role as the Mockingjay and saw the desperate, young woman who was still fighting to survive like she wouldn't have something to eat the next day. He wanted Katniss to have a future BEYOND the war. Even if he was not part of that. Gale, at all times, was finding ways to connive and manipulate Katniss's emotions into feeling sympathy or pity or even guilt towards him and what he wanted her to do. He loved her sure, I acknowledge that. But those feelings were secondary. His feelings were secondary and frankly, in Gale's mind, so were Katniss's. Not with Peeta tho. tl;dr You're so freaking incorrect on the Team Gale vs Peeta front and I don't understand how you could think you have any legs to stand on. And I didn't even mention Gale being the literal Primreaper. WTF.

She doesn’t want to ever be in a position where she could get pregnant and bring children into that world. The reason Peeta works and the reason she DOES love him is because he represents hope for a different kind of future. He shows that change is possible. Plus (spoiler alert) Gale ends up being the reason her sister dies so, he’s out. I think the movies played up the love triangle way more than the books did, and the movies played up “romance” with Gale because of the popularity of the Hemsworths.

  • a win for cinemawins doing catching fire :) best hunger games movie. its incredible how it goes from trying to go to the background and just survive, to trying to face the capital to trying to just survive again to in the end really taking a huge step in facing the capital again, all in a way which makes sense and doesnt make a non understandable story.

  • Some fun things I noticed after repeated viewings: 1. When the fog is approaching Katniss, if you listen, the sound of animal life (frogs, crickets etc;) is silenced - this is a nice foreshadowing that the fog is poisonous. 2. When Beetee is talking about his plan and Plutarch is listening in, knowing he is a part of the rebellion, I feel that Beetee is talking directly to him so he knows to keep an eye on him.

  • I enjoyed the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and it's a pretty good adaptation, but it did suffer from being a longer book condensed into a 2.5 hour movie. While all the important pieces are there, the relationship, the games, and the downward spiral all feel a bit rushed. We miss out on Snow's paranoia and we never really experience his hatred of the mockingjays. Solid B in my opinion. A directors cut to flesh out things just a little more would probably bump it to an A

    • The fact we don’t know what Snow is thinking in the movie makes his downfall into a “villain” seem a bit abrupt, but it’s been shown (maybe a bit subtly) that he has always had evilness inside him

    • Absolutely agree. It was a fitting adaptation but definitely could have used some more exploration of plot points, especially minor ones, and Snow's character arc.

  • Honestly I enjoyed the hunger games trilogy. I get they are not as detailed as the books but that is how all movie adaptions are. Specifically since the movies follow Katniss but they don’t show us her thoughts (which actually gives us more broad views like what Snow is doing which Katniss wouldn’t know in real time).

  • Haymitch is one of my favorite characters. When we see him in the first one and he tells them to embrace the probability of their imminent death just breaks my heart. First time watchers think he is just a good for nothing drunk when in reality, he tells them how broken it's making him to know nothing he does will be able to save their lives. How he's had to live with that knowledge year after year. And here, he solidifies that by basically telling Katniss to get used to the killing, because she is a mentor now, and she, too, will have to live this life and die inside year after year every time she is unable to save someone. The series of books (and movies) are so good

  • Here is the thing with Effie, she is doing her best to keep them alive. Her best to keep everyone who was under her alive. Is she out of touch, yeah but anyone would be when they are in the position of having to pick up 2 kids every year who are probably going to die on television. Also, she is a big reason they survived the beginning of this book. Posted this right before you said what you said.

  • I was really hoping you’d mention the aspect ratio transition when she rises up into the arena. It blew me away in the theater the first time I saw it, and still impresses me now. The one thing I will say, is that I wish this movie maintained the secrecy around the plot twist that they both have to go back to the games that the book had. It was THE oh shit moment in the book and they just gave it away in the trailers. Marketing, I get it….. but it was still unfortunate.

  • No no no no ... I did NOT just hear that Lee was team Gale. Absolutely not. Maybe it's just because I am a cis-woman, but Gale, even as a CHILD raised red flags for me. He dated other girls in the District- which he's allowed to do but then went on to be almost possessive over Katniss and genuinely angry with her over how she had to act in the games. Then when she explains what's going on, and how The Capital is going to be watching her, he decides NOW is the time to kiss her and force all of them into a stressful and dangerous situation. Then later on during Mockingjay he no longer actually sees her as his friend, but as the Revolution symbol, and uses that to vent the anger he's held for years on THe Captial when Katniss is in a tremendous amount of pain coming out of two games, losing Peeta, and finding out her district is gone. Gale punishes Katniss for her love towards Peeta, but Peeta understands and accepts Katniss' love for Gale. I saw a post forever ago detailing that while Gale adds anger to Katniss, Peeta is able to add healing- and they can heal each other by the end of it.

It has a lot of the same stuff that we like and then we realize OH this is actually completely different. Good movie.

  • It’s very hard to do a movie adaptation of a book because the book is very explicit and vivid in detail of characters. But with this series, mainly Catching Fire, each character is displayed exceptionally well and we’re able to see most of the emotions come to life. The book felt as if they’re superhuman in the dystopian future, but became human again when they’re dealing with the Capitol. I’m ready for your take on Mockingjay and hopefully give a compare/contrast between the two because a good bit were left out to make the “movie” a movie.
