Barbie! She made a billion dollars. So that's something. Greta Gerwig? No, Barbie. Also it's a fantastic movie and I didn't even realize how much I actually liked it until I made this video. Story as old as time. Here's everything right with Barbie!

  • Fun fact! Ryan Gosling was initially hesitant to take the role of Ken despite describing the script as “the best I’ve ever read”. Until he went out to his backyard to see his two young daughters playing with their Barbies, only to find that their Ken was laying face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. He took a photo and texted it to Greta saying “I shall be your Ken. His story must be told”

    • Yeah, I remember she gives off that strong vibe nearly the whole time she's with Ken, though in this particular clip that isn't as noticable. I think the actress playing the mom happened to have a pretty smile, and so Lee assumed that smile was a positive sign. Women know that often times you smile to look harmless and unassuming, plus it works like agreeing with them without actually engaging with them, all in hopes that the interaction won't escalated.

Barbie has always been a favourite toy for kids and give them tons of jobs due to its popularity whereas Ken was basically just a boyfriend material for Barbie because from what i know, the Barbie toy recieved criticism for not having a boyfriend so Ken was created just for that. And since girls played with Barbie a lot, they threw Ken aside most of the time. So that tagline was great and understandable given the history of those two

  • This movie isn't about sexism in general, it's specifically about the generation of women that was raised on the "girl power" rhetoric of the 80s and 90s, represented by Barbie. This generation was taught that sexism was over and that girls could do anything and be anything. They were sold the image of a "perfect" woman (beautiful, confident, popular, young yet impossibly accomplished, etc.). When this generation of girls grew up and ran headfirst into the rampant misogyny of the 00s, their response was to blame themselves; if women could do anything, then everything that was wrong must be their fault for not being "good enough". But pointing out how impossible the standard is "wakes" women up from their insecurity and self-blame. Barbie ultimately chooses to be human. The moral is that being real and alive is far better than being perfect.

    • Yes! This is the point. All of the stuff about the patriarchy was about Ken's story. What you said is Barbie's story. The Barbie ideals was about this exact phenomenon. Empowering women by making unrealistic standards, when women just want to be given the freedom and lack of pressure. Now is feeling pressured only a women trait? No, not at all. Many men feel pressured to not show feelings or having to be the breadwinner. We put pressure on everyone on all the time and the point of this movie isn't that sexism necessarily causes this, but the patriarchy does help support it in some ways. This story is told from women's point of view, so it comes across as only addressing women's issues, when really it does both (though for men it's done more in subtext).

  • The moment 14:35 where Barbie is crying due and admitting that shes not good enough never came off as a joke to me, personally. We can see hints of it earlier in the beginning montage of Barbieland where shes basically just present while things are happening (notably everyone in the president's office turns and hugs/compliments someone except her who talks to air because theres no one next to her :c ) and just before the Depression Barbie bit she says that shes just going to wait for a leadership oriented Barbie to snap out of it and fix everything. We do see a lot of confidence from Barbie but as the movie goes on it feels more like confidence in Barbies PURAL than in herself. Her role in the world is The Pretty One in a world full of Pretty Ones and as soon as she falls below the high standard that she (and mattel) set for herself she breaks down because she absolutely feels like being Stereotypically Pretty Barbie is the only thing she can do. I think it just struck me (as a guy) how insane it is to be disappointed you don't hold any of the most coveted positions in your world, as if NOT being president is a personal failure. But I also watch all the women around me basically do that to themselves. My wife feeling like a failure because she can't be a fulltime mom for each of our kids (that's 100% x 2, so 200% mom) and have a full-time career, 300%, and also devote all her time to the charitable things she cares about, 400%. And because she can't give 400% of her time at all times to those things, she thinks she's a failure. (Not always obviously, it's just a mindset I've seen a lot more in women.)

  • Something interesting I didn't see touched on is how the patriarchy was damaging to the Kens (and, by extension, all men) by still not valuing them as individuals. They were perceived as being more important than the Barbies, but it still created a society that places the importance on a person's possessions, job, or relationships. So even when Beach Ken was in charge he was emotionally unfulfilled because there was still no recognition of who he was as a person. Also, yes. Watch Blue Eye Samurai. It is very good and I want it to get another season.

All the trees in Barbieland are plastic so it makes sense that she'd react strongly to the new sound. Also the Scrabble tiles in the Weird Barbie origin flashes spell "Gloria" and she says flat out "I had a Weird Barbie" and Weird Barbie says "yeah you did" in a knowing way... so basically Gloria caused two Barbies to have existential enlightenment and I love it Also also when Barbie gets in her car to go to the Real World her hair is braided and Ken's shirt has a braid pattern matching it Also also also every minute reference to the animated Barbie movies like the gold heart necklace and the pegasus statue. @marisaturner3352@marisaturner33525 ай бұрын
    • This became one of my favorite unspoken elements. They joke about how Margot Robbie is too pretty to be saying she isn't pretty, but in reality most people have insecurities (even beautiful celebrity actresses). About their appearance, or their qualifications, or their abilities, etc etc. Everyone is vulnerable to fixating on our negative qualities or features, especially women. Margot Robbie is allowed to feel unpretty -- but Barbie feels unpretty specifically because she isn't PERFECT anymore. The other Barbies don't have the weaknesses that she recognizes in herself, because she's changing, and accepting change can be HARD. She can never go back to being "Stereotypical Barbie pretty" because she's becoming more human, but she also doesn't know how to be anything else yet. I love that Gloria recognizes what she's really feeling and doesn't just tell Barbie she's wrong, because she recognizes that it's all insecurity... which she knows is all too common for women trying to live up to society's expectations.

  • I think the real benefit of the message being so universal IS that it is so universal. It's very clear on how contradictingly impossible it is to be a woman in the present, but is equally clear on how replaceable men are if they aren't the number 1 option. As you mentioned there is overlap - there are some contradicting expectations for men that exist, and women can also be treated as replaceable - but in the majority, that is how the system treats us respectively, and that is not a reason to blame each other for it. 'Barbie' then takes it that step further and unashamedly declares these as systemic problems rather than individual. The systems that perpetuate these cruelties are what should be targeted, not each other.

    @HoennAngel@HoennAngel5 ай бұрын
    • @@mollypop6887 i would not stand behind the argument "Barbie hates men" but i personally didnt like the ending with no real progress made - just reverted back to normal. For me there was no change in the way of thinking from both the kens and barbies regarding the unnessicity and toxicity of inequality between men and women. To come to the conclusion that there are systemic problems and then NOT acting upon it - even stating, the kens have to go through the same fate as the women in real world and slowly fight for their rights - doesnt get us further than not acknowledging the problem. Such hinderance of progress really annoys me regardless in which aspect of life. I hate it when we as a society are running knowingly into our own demise because of some small discussions about who got it worse and who is mostly at fault. Can we just act upon it after coming to this conclusion? What does it do to fight among ourselfes about guilt and indured agony and further split into "womens side" and "men side"? Nevertheless i enjoyed the film and would recommend it to other men (as a man). I got further insight into the perspective of women in this regard and found the film got a good balance to also include kens perspective rather than just making him a plain villain. But it isnt progressing the discussion further in the right direction to act arccordingly.

    • But President Barbie says they need to make room for the Kens. Just because the Kens werent automatically made doctors and put in government and given power doesn't mean things remain the same. Its unfair to keep the Kens out, but it's also unfair to promote them to position of power just because they're kens. Doing that would actually be failing the message of the movie, as the message would come off that while the women worked hard and earned those roles, once they realized they'd discriminated against the Kens instead of fixing the system and giving them a chance to achieve success in whatever they choose to pursue, they would just be handed positions of power solely because they're men and without any skills or training, placing them in any high level positon would be the equivalent to giving a child a toy. "Yeah, sure, Ken you just take your badge and walk around protecting people. Youre doing great, babe! Okay girls, now remember, the Kens have no skills so make sure a Barbie is with them at all times." That wouldn't make for a very good ending. The whole purpose of President Barbie's speech was to make it clear there WOULD be change, but like the real world it might take time. Let's make sure Ken can fly a plane before making him Pilot Ken.

It's not just a random "dude song", it's lyrically very much connected to the themes of the movie. The song is about someone who was in a toxic relationship, and so when they find a new relationship, *they* become toxic because it's all they've learned. Sound familiar? Completely in control of themselves, free to do whatever, theyre just chillin. But as soon as the kens take charge, all the barbies aren't. They loose knowledge of who they used to be, theyre put in these skimpy outfits they didn't agree to wear, they're basically brainwashed.

I guess subconsciously projecting my own experience, I expected her to say the final scene where Barbie becomes human, or maybe the bus stop scene when Barbie is empathizing with all the people. But instead, she said, "When Gloria gave her speech about how hard it is to be a woman." It kind of hit me hard. Because yeah, I knew that monologue was true intellectually, but it never occurred to me that would resonate with women so much more than general human empathy scenes, to the point where THAT is the only scene she cried at. It was tackling that bit about no woman actually relates to Barbie, and I'm one of those women. I was surprised that the first thing she contemplated was death. I was like, "that's so fuckin real it's not even funny." And I just kept getting hit with those moments, and then laughing at how someone who's never had to deal with it, starts having to. I love how humorous, warm, and thought-provoking this channel is. Thank you and your team for celebrating so many different types of movies and for bringing general positivity into the world!

  • Hello Mr. CinemaWins. Its not a movie per se, but I would love it if you would be willing to do videos on the series Arcane. Probably the best video game adaptation ever put to screen. I know Wandavision is part of the MCU so it made more sense to cover it too, but it still was technically a TV series so hopefully you would take a shot at Arcane too.

  • 23:20 the misspelling of heroine as heroin had me very confused for a bit about what I’d missed about this movie Brilliant video as usual CWins, was hoping you’d tackle this one, always love your little asides to explain things that certain people like to intentionally misrepresent or misunderstand

  • Both Ryan and Margot are extraordinary in this movie, being easy oscar contenders for me. My only problem with this movie is the some what lack of "main discussion". All of the points blend very well (gender roles, being your true self, compassion, and all of that kind of stuff), but i feel that all of them could have used 15 more minutes to tell a more connected message. In the end, i think the movie talks about innocence and, well, the problem with gender roles. Barbie and Ken are fairly naive and kind of stupid for most of the movie (well, Ken is in its entirety). That, for me, makes the gender discussion way more important since "how the hell are we, normal people, going to stop this shitty cicle of prejudice?"

    • I'm going to disagree with this. Part of the movie's success, imo, is how fast it hits you with everything and keeps moving. It doesn't stop for reflection or expansion, which leaves the viewer reflecting on it afterwards. Comparing it to its partner movie, Oppenheimer spends so much time on the horror of the bomb and McCarthyism that the viewer isn't left with much to think about after the movie.

  • Honestly, watching this as a trans man who grew up as a daughter makes the line “we mothers stand still so our daughters can look back and see how far they’ve come” hit so much harder like oof I had to watch this movie three times over the course of three consecutive weekends because of birthdays and I still cry at that part

  • Went to see this movie with my Mom. We expected it to be so much fun, we didn’t think it would end up being that and so much more, so strangely feel-good. When Barbie was talking to Ruth and started seeing all those people truly living, I started sobbing. It brought on a lot of emotions, but overall made me feel good. I hugged my Mom tight during the rest of the movie, and we left the Theater feeling like we were breathing fresh air, so de-stressed and any negativity weighing us down just vanished. It made me feel so hopeful, and I’m grateful it exists. Glad we got to have such a great time together.

  • 21:26 You don’t have to be a mother or a daughter. It’s not a gendered thing. That’s literally part of the human experience. As parents, we want our kids to be better than us in every way. That’s why we try to teach them and impart all our experiences. Because one day, when they look back and realize they surpassed us, we can look at them and say “damn right you did”.

    • Agreed, that line would also work using fathers and sons

    • I dunno if I agree that fathers or mothers "stand still" though? As long as a person is living they are always growing and changing, even if their kids are grown. It isn't until death that they truly stand still.

    • @@kateorgera5907 It doesn't mean literally "stop doing anything". It just means all the focus and priority shift to supporting your children, which slows down the rest of your life, until they surpass you.

  • This movie is so jam packed with ideas, emotions, jokes, subtle insights, cinematographic genius, references, and just plain awesome pink stuff that loads of it comes into your consciousness in a wave, without time to not or analyze. Worth watching bunches of times, meme-ing to death, or just enjoying with the pleasure of the company of friends and an auditorium of strangers.

  • This movie hit me with such a gut punch when Billie’s song finally played in full force. The whole movie id just been smiling and having a good time, the monologue earlier was good but it didn’t like have me super emotional or anything, but then the song began. I’m not even sure why, maybe I’m just a huge sucker for montages of real people just living, but it genuinely broke me. Like little snippets were played in this video and those ones got me a little bit, that’s how much it got me. One of my favorite scenes in a movie that I can think of honestly. What a great film.
