Full Build: Turning A '73 Split-Bumper Chevy Camaro Into A Triple Threat
A triple threat G-Machine! The Engine Power team takes an almost pristine '73 Split-Bumper Chevy Camaro and turns it into a triple threat car. It has to be competitive on the road course, the autocross, and the drag strip. To do all that it has to make big power, have an aggressive look, and handle like it's on rails. This is one car that will do it all.

I love all of these "Full Build" videos. I like this better than the various "installment" episodes!!!👌
Just can’t find original cars anymore like this 73. Such a clean original survivor, no more. I’m not necessarily a purist, but they could have found a different car for this build.
I get starting with a clean car, but that thing was museum grade. Now it’s going to do the same thing but without the ability to say “look kid, that’s how it used to be”. I seriously doubt that it ever goes to get anything more than ice cream, let alone a time slip
Beautiful car, I’d leave it as it is. But nice build overall
I was all into this build till I heard rear seat delete. So much for keeping it stock looking
Now a fuel cell? Ughhhhh
@@paulevans2153 it's called safety, dummy.
The best part of this video is the fact they teach kids to fabricate and give them skills to go forward with in life.
This project is special to me. I've been building and autocrossing these 70-73 Camaro's for nearly 50 years now, starting right out of college (where I bought my 1st 71 in 1974). I have never heard of Street Rod Garage in Grant Alabama, although I live almost rock throwing distance from that town (Huntsville Alabama). I'll have to drive over there one day and check those guys out! Thank you for highlighting and promoting them.
This is why I love yall show you get too see entire build in detail. If an average person didn't know something they would by the end of the build
A two plus hour video and you chump out with video of finished product awesome.
@38:00 not gonna lie, is the guy still alive? Holy shit dude, at least put a bandana and don’t breathe that plastic dust.
A little concern for the guy not wearing a respirator while spraying the powder coating 😲
Really enjoyed watching these series of shows back in the day. Absolutely love seeing this digest format on youtube. I do think Mr. Speed Coatings should be wearing some gear from Mr. PPE. Powder coating his lungs for 40 years.
x1,000,000 on the PPE!!!
Beautiful original car,
You mean WAS
Crazy to cut -up that OG
I've been a Camaro guy my whole life, and I love the 2nd Gen split bumpers models. That's a beautiful car, but, damn guys, did you have to start with one that was all original?!
A full build is the only way to see these, and I also love that you give us all the info on your supply lines and service people you use for specialty job of build, so if and when I ever do a build, I have premium results with premium parts & services of the trade, excellent , com'on lottery win! Javi G.
There is nothing wrong with a QuadraJet. People who complain about it don't know how to tune it.
I really miss seeing Mike gally on your shows. I think he was around from day one. Anybody happen to know where he went? My guess is he probably started his own shop somewhere in the Nashville area
Butchering up a factory air, Type LT Camaro in this condition only proves you guys should be working on old Hondas.
If only you'd answered your phone when they called for advice.
@@dirtwarrior1997 It would seem that you are not educated enough to know the difference between giving advice and stating a fact. You should stick to something you are more familiar with, like keeping your bicycle clean, and let the grownups tend to the other things.
@@nojunkwork5735 Great response. 10/10 You've got me all figured out. Take a joke, buddy. It's the internet. Have a good day!
@@nojunkwork5735with 145HP from the factory I totally get giving it more power. It needed more power.
Honestly…..you shouldn’t have ‘ruined’ that nice Camaro. You could have just built from ground up. Anyway…great program.
The Carbon Fiber parts are really incredible. Not a fan of CF, but it really woke up the look in this case. Even the wheels are amazing. Love that pattern. As far as hacking up a true survivor, well... that was hideous. Sorry, but that was nonsense. GM made millions of these, and you could have gotten one that was already gutted for way less money, and ended up with the same car. Great build, but the hack job gets a thumbs down. Shame on thee.
I'm cool with starting with a clean example to build upon, but only when more care is given to the parts selection and fabrication. Its nice, but lots of KZheadrs build cars with more soul than this. Colors gross too.
Was looking forward to some time slips. Would have been interesting to run the same cone course and drag strip stock and then modified. Missed opportunity to see how all those components worked out for more than burnouts.
Love the Low key background trampled underfoot Music !
Such a beautiful car but I have a question? Why not clean up the front end clips & mounts? Clean up or touch up some of the plastic & paint?
I was loving this build right up to the point we were told there would be no power steering, with those wide front tires and no front cowling you will need the incredible Hulk to drive that car on a road course or circle track. Put that car on a circle track with the setup you have now will make it a wall magnet. Hope you'll rethink this option.
Every single one of these builds is the same. Nine inch rear end, LS, manual everything. It's stupid, and it's overdone. I feel like Pro Touring has reached a point in recent years where everybody is copying each other's work. Then they put a hundred grand into the bodywork just to make it look unique, as if that will make it drive, ride, or handle any differently.
Phenomenal build. Very tasteful. Good coverage of the build. Excellent product presentation. Not really fond of the recaps. Great job.
Nice original car.
Blockhead is not here for a slice of the industry. He’s taking over it 😈
Yes I realize it’s mega dollar and has the hi po parts cannon shot at it , but what a great build. I just wonder what kind of 1/4 mile times it would generate. I’m not sure if we’ll see a follow up with that. I’d guess that of it hooked up it should hit 11s
I couldnt find lube locker gaskets online. Do you provide material provider addresses on this site?
I want this done for a 1978 chevy caprice classic
A 3-speed automatic transmission??? With all the modern improvements and customization, it's unbelievable that you wouldn't at least put in a 4-speed overdrive, especially with that 4.11 rear end.
I think the 3 speed automatic transmission is a compromise for drag racing.
@@toddsmalleyYou can have 3 speeds with a 6 speed manual
@@kkoch666 You can set that automatic up to shift once in a quarter mile. Just like the old two speed power glides! they always won!
I don't know why someone would mod a clean original classic. buy a junker or modded classic then do all your mods to it. Let someone that wants the classic all original have it.
Because 40 y.o. cars suck
Maybe because it's faster and cheaper to buy one in good condition than it is to buy a junker and fix everything wrong with it
Screw power nation. Fucked up a perfectly good classic.
It was a 350 auto car not like it was a 427 4 speed car
I don’t know why someone would watch a show about modifying a car. Then whinge when they do.
I remember getting up saturday mornings and watching Power Block on Spike TV. Trucks Horse Power TV MuscleCar and My Classic Car Good Times.
Love your videos guys. Been following for years
Man...awesome. I have a 73 split. I could use all those accessories brackets and ac components. Do a give away. Would love to have those parts.
This build happened in 2018, parts would be long gone.
Very nice work
Normally I love these builds.... but....... You took a perfect numbers matching vintage car and did damage to it. I would have rather seen you guys do this to another car that was a mess.
I have mixed feelings about this kind of build of a beautiful vintage Camaro. Take all that HP to the track enough times and it will inevitably get wrecked. I'd rather see it restored into an all stock museum piece.
I have my battery in the trunk and there is a solenoid there too, after cranking the long cable to starter is dead. It runs under the car not through.
1:31:41 what is that thing in the center behind where the seat goes ?
2:25:27 guess the grease method did not align the rear spoiler holes well 😢 front hood gap looks big too.😮
I have been watching you channel for more years than I can remember. I have been building cars for over forty years and I love your channel. When I started building cars, we called them cars now they are called old cars. I am so sad that you found this absolutely perfect survivor and you are doing this to it. I respect the idea but there is a special place in hell waiting for you for what you have done to this beautiful piece of history. You couldn't find a junker to do this to? Well, I guess I will see you in the super-hot place. But I won't be there for doing this to such a nice car. Oh well I will just keep watching thank you for so much entertainment.
“The best of both worlds” is LS up top, and LS on the bottom.
I love looking at a complete build like this, especially with all the handling and performance enhancements, I mean this was the full meal deal. But that vinyl!? Oh man I was around in '73 and it looked bad then and worse now lol. I know you're not paint and body guys but you added carbon fiber and a spoiler but left that nasty vinyl...SMH. 😆
Should have a 6 speed manual, matte hood and something other than all chrome wheels.
The Shop Owner should teach those young guns to use ear protection. After 20 years they'll thank him. constant ringing in the ears is no joke! Ask me how I know. Great video!
What's with the mismatched lug nuts? Why black spline in the front & chrome in the rear...
That thing needs a t56 and auto in that is kinda a shame
“This weeks episode we break into The Louvre and give the Mona Lisa some sick sleeve tattoos!”
Good job, guys! Way to build a $100k car one infomercial at a time! All while cutting up a near-perfect original early 2nd-gen Camaro! How many are left in this condition and THAT original (before you started hacking it apart)??? The answer.......one less! Literally the ONLY original parts you mentioned were being saved were the seats! It must be nice doing a build using the best of everything, including a shop and tools any DIY hot-rodder would die for! Even one of the more diminutive pieces of shop equipment (the Trajan 125 band saw) comes in at $850. Great for advertising products, which obviously gets you free tools, equipment, and parts in exchange, but that's not how it works in the real world. I'm about 1/2 way thru this long video and have seen enough. Nothing innovative or terribly unique, just an unlimited budget. It's no surprise shows like this are waning in popularity. On the other hand, channels that show what DIYers can PRACTICALLY and AFFORDABLY do, like VGG for example, are exploding! I'm sure the car turns out awesome! How could it not??? If it isn't NEAR perfect, I would consider this build an EPIC fail given the money, parts, and top of the line tools used! But good luck on your next corporate-sponsored, no practical budget build! I'm sure it will be great too! Go ahead and hack up an original muscle car in amazing condition while you are at it! But if you are going to put together another Camaro, make it something MORE rare next time, like destroying an original YENKO!
Not everyone is poor.
He had mentioned maybe a big cam
The Hood Scoop Is Too Far Forward, Looks Not Right.
Its not a scoop Its a warm air extraction vent, hense the far forward position, to draw air up and out of the radiator before it gets near the aircleaner. And helps keep heat out of the engine bay on road corse and autocross. There is a reason uts where it is.
Holy Crap that looks like the Camaro my buddies dad had and I live outside Louisville as well....
I'm a 1973 model. Wonder if they could build me a chassis😂 Roll 🐘Tide!
whats the puddle under the front end from at 2:28:18 ??? hhmmmm?
Pat do u have enough ink pins 😂and ✏️ dudes 😮
Why not a chassis with an independent rear axle?
Incredible build. Sick car. Should have started with a basket case and restored it rather than molest a cherry like that. Any shitbox Camaro destined for the crusher would have exalted in becoming this car.
Dude in powder coat booth spraying that crap with no mask is crazy, his face is covered in the powder
beautiful condition should leave it as it is .not actually a barn find
I love the '70-'73 Rally Sport. The only thing nicer is a Z28/RS.
I'm pretty sure this proves. That head has a lot to do with how the engine sounds
Watch as we destroy this beautiful classic.
why starting with a much more wispread plastic bumper when you can ruin a split one?
English please ?
I wonder if this car didn’t have California plates it would have stayed virtually cherry.
Ive always liked this show but i gotta say I’m actually sick to my stomach watching them hack away at a classic in that solid of condition. They even addressed this and made it sound like they werent foing anything that severe. Terribly disappointed in seeing this. Why couldnt they have found something similar that wasnt in such hood shape.
I thought the only split bumper Camaro was a 1970 1/2,my brother had one
All I know is you guys need to explain what full build means. This was fuckin air time. You did not show a full build.
That guy needs to wear a mask in his process
Should have gone watts link
it was an un touched survivor and they destroyed the car the moment they touched it with a cut off wheel
I would get rid of the vinyl top.
What happened to Mike Galley?
Weird thing is all the former powernation hosts have KZhead channels and such but theres nothing of him
Dear Chip Foose? Please help these pickles taste more dill. Thanks like usual.
I’m more surprised you don’t have portable interac machines for table side payment or etransfer it’s the cats ass. Why pay a third party to move money or pay someone?
I wonder what powder coated lungs look like? Not even a paper dust mask? That’s about the worst health and safety situation I’ve seen.
Paint the carbon fiber bits already.
Well, I lasted all the way until they changed out the stock chrome bumperettes with carbon fiber ones. I have cringed as they destroyed such a beautiful original, but kept watching. The carbon fiber bumperettes are a bridge too far.
73 d7dnt have sit bumpers
Split bumper camaros were produced 1970 - 1973... just saying..
Fuck it. I'm going. Back. To resto mods.
4.3 chevy with a turbo. Or LS and be done with it those Volvo v6 aren't any good. Low hp also
Yikes. I can't believe old boy sprays that powder coating with no respirator on.
You don't need all those aftermarket goodies to have a restomod camaro, that full frame is overkill and you can see it peaking under the car, looks nasty actually LMAO just waiting to catch the smallest bump and there goes that powdercoat😂 carburetor and jetting is out sorry, fuel injection is superior and to bolt in a mechanical fuel pump?😆 too much money wasted on unnecessary things when it could have gone to repairing the rusted fenders and other hidden spots. I know it is a show to advertise products and tools but it sure carries people away to the illusion that they need to spend all that money on overpriced unnecessary parts to have a cool camaro. By the way, another opinion of mine is to remove that viny top because almost sure there is severe rust underneath. Should have dropped an LT4 and called it a day😂
So, if you have around $150-200K you can build this too.
You guys know better than this... With the direction the automotive industry is going cars this rare need to be saved at all costs... there are so many CHEAPER cars out there that you could have used as your starting point, since your only reasoning for using this particular car was since "you guys aren't body guys" you needed something you didn't have to do body and paint work to which I understand but as a said get a cheaper starter car and use the 15-20k you saved to pay for body and paint work because obviously the chassis doesn't matter if its nothing but rust because you put a new one piece chassis under it.... I could keep going because this stuff fires me up... I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.
LOVELY WORK BOYS . AND IF YOU SAY YOUR A GIRL IM NOT BYEING IF OK BOYS 😊😊
Is it just me or do the wheels and trim need to be black?
I enjoyed this build but i wasn't sure if actually watching a car build or a sales commercial with your constant waffle for all the parts you used.
You need to take the advertisements off the quarter panel, which makes it look bad and not in a good way.
Yuck, and yet another very nice classic car ruined turned into a race car.🤢🤮
they should of left the 15" steel wheels with crappy tires and bench seat and 120whp motor so that someone can drive it and park it on the grass with the rest of the 100 same stock builds lol
You know what's better than a car? Turning it into a race car 😉
@@stringsattached67 Yeah the many front wheel drive turds would be great candidates to convert them to correct wheel drive race cars. You do realize they're pricing most people out of this hobby by making race cars out of classic cars ruining them. The more race cars they make out of the classic and antique cars the less of them are available for the general public to enjoy the hobby with. The old cars already did there race car duties. So many of them turned to junk from being raced. It's the later models turn to do race car duty. Cull those cars not the classic and antique ones.🤷 If this is pro touring build, then I'm good with that if it will get driven. But if it's a trailer queen to compete on a track against other cars with the chance of being totaled, I'm not good with that, how about you?🤷😎👍
@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 yeah but what they're doing right here isn't turning a car to junk if anything it's making a classic car better reliable more dependable faster I don't see anything wrong with that.
@@stringsattached67 That depends on what they use it for. If they're going to trailer it to roundy round racing with other cars on the track, those kind of cars usually have a short life.🤷
Way to ruin a great car that should have been left alone. Done with this series. Unreal.
The editor really needs to stop with all the flashbacks. They are not necessary when watching a full build YT video.
Well....if this doesn't p!ss you off after watching for 2.5 hours, then you must be a big fanboy. "Triple threat" and at the end...all you can show is burnouts? GFY....and lose the damn announcer that sounds like he has nails in his throat....that thinks he's a real man. It's an act too....just like the rest of the characters in this show.
They ruined the pristine car... should have just looked for a shell. 12.56 into the show. Was stated that their going to keep the classic look
The wheels were, well, Meh...
First you said it had a 2 barrel, now you say it has a 4 barrel? I guess you don't work on cars.
Im sorry, but fir the time and money spent, they're getting over a 1,000 hp out of an ls motor.. for the money those numbers are disappointing.. i know, 600 + HP is nothing to sneeze at...
If you are going to improve a car, improve one that needs it. You are ruining this car, there are plenty out there that are already ruined that you could improve. Why would you? They are only original one time, after this this is just another Camaro.
I thought it was just me 🤔
