This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Stacey Schuerman leads us through an exercise designed to reset, renew, and rejuvenate our energy. Join her as she teaches us about breathing and calming the mind.
Stacey Schuerman, E-RYT 500 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher), is the Co-Owner of SunSpark Yoga, a family owned, community focused yoga studio in the heart of Old Towne Orange. She has been practicing yoga since 2002 and teaching yoga to adults and kids of all ages since 2008. Stacey's personal yoga journey began after an injury, when she discovered it was the perfect exercise for strength development, balance, increased flexibility and stress reduction.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Thanks for the upload and thanks to Stacey Schuerman! I've had anxiety problems for years, and it's breathwork which really helps in stressful times, such as when my youngest is having a tantrum. The brilliant thing is that breathwork is free! One can simply activate the parasympathetic nervous system in a few minutes. I wish all those who read this comment a boss day.

I have never felt better since I picked up meditation and breathwork as daily training since 2008. Anyone who's watching this or reading this comment, please listen to what Stacey is teaching, it's solid GOLD and your life will change - you just gotta give it a try and stick with if for a little bit before judging it. Of course 'looking' at the breathing is a common technique in meditation, but when I do this technique before I start the sitting meditation, the I get way more calm. I think it is the body that needs less air, so your breathing calms down, so you become more still. It stills the mind.

  • The simple task of regulating breathing can have a tremendous impact on mental health. Stress, anxiety, and their consequent health issues are such a big issue in our society, and taking this small step can make a difference. As a medical school student, I experience high levels of stress on a near constant basis. The simple act of taking five minutes to stop and focus on my breathing, or just going outside and getting some fresh air, makes a world of difference. There are numerous studies on the benefits of breathing exercises for a wide range of pathological conditions. As a future osteopathic physician, I’ll encourage my patients to avail themselves of meditative breathing exercises, for their physiological, emotional, and spiritual benefit. The principle of beneficence dictates that I do the best I can for all of my patients, part of which entails treating the whole person with any and all beneficial modes of treatment.

  • This is beautiful work. I would like to point out that Namaste is a respectful Hello in India. It is a form of greeting used when people meet together in a formal setting. I think Westerners practicing yoga use it as a replacement for "Bless You" or "Peace be to you" and I notice they use it at the very end. This is completely fine but it might confuse Indians if they go to India or other Hindi speaking cultures.

  • I've been noticing a lot of the Ted talks are more like interactive labs, with audience participation, as opposed to just being talks.
