The first time I ever heard of the Lenovo Y540 was Jarrod talking about it in a review of another laptop. I thought it was a stupid name, but I still googled "Lenovo wifi 40". Turns out it's not the name that's stupid 🙃
I only recently started hating the name. I started doing a lot of text to speech on my phone when answering comments, because I can do it while testing games and other stuff hands free. EVERY TIME I say Y540, it spells out "WiFi 40" and I have to correct it manually.
And the way he says BENCHMAWWKKKK.
Lenovo Y five hundred and forty or Lenovo Y five four zero

Look and performance wise the Y540 but I gotta love that metal lid with it's extra weight.
Very useful video for me. Thanks
No problem, happy to help!
Great video as always Jarrod. I did miss the graphics for cpu temperature with undervolt and other configurations, but they are in their own review videos. Was planning on changing my Dell G5, since it's so massive that it is uncomfortable. Y540 seems like a solid choice, but I'd be giving up better thermals for commodity, don't know if it's worth it.
If current or last gen G5 probably not worth upgrading quite yet especially with new Intel/AMD/nvidia parts just months away. Yeah don't think I did all the undervolt settings because probably had different values for each machine so harder to fairly compare.
Thank you Jarrod for making these videos, Because of your reviews and recommendations I have bought Lenovo legion Y540 for 960 USD a few days ago.
Not waiting for ryzen 4000 series? I want a gaming laptop now but stuck between the decision of buying now or waiting for ryzen 4000 series.
Hayden I wanted a powerful productivity laptop(as I am a student of Computer Science) and I got a good deal on legion y540 so i bought that one. If you want a laptop right now then there are many good deals available but if you can wait for 2-3 months there will be many new gen laptops.
@@aizazomer3122 I am also looking for a powerful laptop for coding and scientific computing. Great thing in these laptops is higher tdp for cpu-only-workloads. But lack of free m2 nvme slot for future ugrades is stopping me. I like almost everything else about this laptop. Now I wait for 8 core ryzen 4000 or may be 8 core i7 10th gen.
Nice, no problem at all! Let us know how it goes 👍

The Y7000 1 - 2 FPS better than Y540, see the red gaming theme gave it more FPS like it should be, now imagine if only it has RGB, it will give 100+++ FPS more 😂.
RGB would have increased performance by a LOT
Hi jarrod thanks for your videos. I'm going to buy Y540 (60 hz screen) . How can i know which model of display i'm buying? Is the value of brightness written on the box? read earlier that display covers %91 of sRGB and it was one of my reason to choose this laptop but why you say %72?
Love your video, i have Y7000 laptop. It comes with 170 watt charger. Im planning charge it with 140watt type c charger with c to Dc converter. Do you think its possible to power this laptop with only 140 watt charger?
Hello Jarrod, nice and useful comparison, enjoyed watching:)! I have a very very very specific question regarding the y540 (maybe it's also for the y7000 since they have same chassis basically) but if you tap on the plastic cover of the extended rear (when laptop is on a table or something) do you notice that near the right hinge it makes a louder sound than the rest? I was wondering because mine does this and I was worried a tab was broken or something like that
I haven't noticed that with mine, but I can't check it out for you right now as I'm on a plane to the US, will be back in Australia in a week's time where the y540 is
@@JarrodsTech thank you! Have a nice flight Jarrod:)! It's only a minor thingy but wanted to be sure:D

Bought the Y540 with the RTX 2060 back in October after watching some of your reviews. Finally I can play games with good FPS. The only thing that bothers me sometimes is that the fans go wild as soon as I start a game, no matter what game it is. Even during games like monopoly that require not a lot of cpu or gpu work the laptop tries to keep everything cool and the modes in the Vantage Software don't really change the fan noise. Quite mode is pretty much the same as Performance mode. Don't mind about the fans when I'm at home since I got headphones on but sometimes I want to play some Minecraft or something when I'm at University, which is pretty much not possible because the laptop gets too loud and bothers others.
undervolt them, you're cooking ur gpu and cpu.
Yeah the vantage software isn't great for fan control, that's one of the negatives with it for sure, but don't recall mine suddenly spiking like that then dropping off 🤔
Hi, for the y7000, is the thermal as good as y530(known for having good temps)? I'm considering getting y530 but if y7000 is about the same for the temperature then I think I'll go for y7000 instead
here in Singapore, and some other Asian countries to my knowledge, lenovo offers Y-7000SE, which i have managed to purchase it at 1950 SGD (at IT Fair in Singapore) back in November , which is about 1399.76 USD. Originally the price is about 2200 SGD/1579.22USD before discount that i have managed to secure. Spec wise, it is running on i7 9750H, GTX1660TI, 144 hz screen, 1TB SSD, 16GB dual channel memory. It also appears that here in my country there isnt the option to buy the Y-540 locally in stores, which was what i intended to buy so i ended up with Y-7000SE It also seems that the "SE" in Y-7000SE could be a region specific quote to differentiate out south east Asia unit with the global units
Hmm yeah I've heard about the SE, doesn't seem to be available here 🤔
would you please tell me what's the difference between Y7000 and Y7000P because I really loved the Y7000 I want to know if they are similar or something, and if not I really would love to see you do a review about it, I really love your channel!
LMFAO on the Y545 Camera expression :)
Recently bought a y540 and am heavily enjoying it so far (same configs as this video) i would however like to know more about the undervolting and overclocking techniques used to maximise performance for the helios 300 comparison video and just some optimization tips as i am new to laptop and pc gamin in general Otherwise your videos are fantastic please keep on going (edit) as well am wondering about the durability of the 57wh battery endurance under constant charge and gaming
Good to hear! For GPU OC just look up any MSI Afterburner guide, there are heaps of them, all you do is increase the core and memory clocks a bit. For undervolting check out this guide: kzhead.info/sun/rLKtabBreYmFeac/bejne.html
i love your videos !! i have a doubt, i dont know which should i go for helios 300 i7-9750H 1660Ti or Y7000 Legion with the same specs thanks in advance
Helios will perform better out of the box, but both will perform similarly if you're willing to manually undervolt and overclock the Y7000 yourself.
it's really satisfying when he says Y everytime
Good job, mate. What do u think about Xiaomi mi gaming laptop 2019 with i7/rtx 2060 or legion y540 i5/rtx 2060? Same price... but i dont think i5 9300h is a good choice in 2020 for gaming.
Hard to say as Xiaomi don't send me anything, y540 is quite good for the money however
The Y540 is a tad bit more expensive in my country than Y545. I’ll try to see if there’s a cheaper listing somewhere, however if there isn’t then should I go ahead and purchase the Y545? It’s specs are the same as mentioned here except its got 1660Ti. I’m just worried about the thermal and hinge situation.
Hey man, love your videos... I have a doubt, which one should i go for helios 300 with i7-9750H 2060 or lenovo y740 with same specs ? And which one has better thermals ??
Thanks! Hmm hard to guess thermals as I haven't tested either machine with that spec. Helios will do better out of the box but Lenovo will be similar if you are willing to undervolt and overclock yourself. Otherwise Lenovo has Gsync (which also boosts performance by disabling Optimus) and Thunderbolt, so nice extra features
Jarrod'sTech what do you mean when you say undervolt and overclock them yourself?
Hi jarrod. Can you suggest laptop ram brand that fits into acer predator triton 300? The one with 2667mhz speed and ddr4. Or do u have any website to check and choose ram that fit into every laptop?
Any should be fine, just check the timings match the stick already installed at 2666, you can see this using software like HWInfo. A standard SODIMM memory module of the same size is what you want, I'm not aware of any sites showing that, sorry.
Jarrod'sTech thanks for the info jarrod!! Appreciate the reply 😁
I bought the y545 at costco for $999 and it had an extra 1tb HDD and 8gb RAM more than the y540 at the lenovo website for $100 less. The y545 also had a better priced warranty plan, extending it to 5 years for an extra $100. For me this seemed worth it as Im mainly gonna use it for light gaming and engineering work.
Nice 👍 makes sense

very nice job comparing all three i'm not really sure why the y545 was made, a different body i guess but to me it looks really ugly, with *interesting* thermals but it does have the 2060. overall i love the video production you have going on here keep it up man.
Thanks! Yeah pretty strange, must be some reason for the different options, maybe different markets/regions? But then weird they're all available here 😅
The Y540 based on pure aesthetics is more appealing than the Y7000's gamer look. Jarrod just helped me lock my decision.
How do these laptops perform in video editing tasks? Will they be a good choice? Will we able to edit 4k videos smoothly?
Almost zero difference. Weird, guess I forgot to put premiere results in. I have Premiere testing in the recent full review videos, but yeah the difference is minor at best, big diminishing returns once you have a GTX 1660 Ti. I edit 4K on a lower spec laptop so I'd expect it to be fine, granted I use 720p proxies when actually editing because running a 4K file on 1/4 of a 1080p screen seems a bit pointless.
@@JarrodsTech how much better is the rtx 2060 card for video editing as compared to the 1660ti? I've seen some gaming tests and the value you get doesn't seem to justify the extra price, how does it compare for video editing? And what advantages does you bring?
Hey Jarrod, nice review! Wanna ask, I wanna buy laptop for programming, lil bit of design and gaming ROG Strix G531GU i5 9300H, 8GB RAM, GTX 1660ti 6GB, 72% NTSC 120Hz, better design than nitro 5 Or Acer Nitro 5 i7 9750H, 8GB RAM (+16GB I'll buy separately), GTX 1650 4GB, 72% NTSC 144Hz Wich one should I buy? They have same price, thank you!
Thanks, for gaming the 1660 ti will demolish the 1650 despite the CPU change, four cores with the i5 is ok for those tasks but i7 probably preferably, I guess depends which part is the priority.
@@JarrodsTech Thank you and keep the good works, man! You're definitely the best laptop reviewer out there

First of all Sir, your reviews are so exhaustive. which one I should buy between MSI GE65 9SE , Y540 , PREDATOR HELIOS 300 , all with rtx 2060? (more interested in high fps and good temperature than design ecc.) I would really appreciate your opinion, thank you!
I probably wouldn't personally consider the GE65 due to how it looks but that's personal taste, it's overclocked in the highest performance mode but you can do that manually to the others too so not a major advantage. I'd get the Y540 over the Helios 300 for the reasons covered in this comparison: kzhead.info/sun/o92gl7WykZ-DZ4E/bejne.html

144hz is must if you buy any of these laptops. 1660ti and 2060 is more then enough to make use of that screen. I wish I can disable intel graphics as well... sadly I cant.
I agree.
How is it with Counter-Strike? Keen for the Y540 at this stage but need to be convinced. I need it for work and editing too. Is this the best option at around 1800-2000aud? @jarrod
Yes, Lenovo are priced very well in Australia, I just bought an i5/1660 Ti for $1300 AUD on sale as I need i5 for benchmarks. Being able to disable Optimus definitely helps with CS:GO in particular, see results here: kzhead.info/sun/Z5ePobtseIipe6M/bejne.html as for editing, I wrote a post on that topic here with details: jarrods.tech/is-the-lenovo-y540-good-for-video-editing/

I want to buy a gaming laptop. My budget is limited so I'm looking for something cheap. The option which I've are : Nitro 5 and asus tuf- ryzen 5 + 560x (around) same price or with 1050 . If I push my budget a little I could get asus tuf with 1650, ryzen 5 and 120hz display. Or I can go with legion y530 or y7000 but with i5 8th gen and 1050. Hp pavilion 15 is also available with 1650. What would you suggest?
i have a y530 and have upgraded it to 16gb memory. Its running a 1050 and am able to play any game without any problems. For the money (£750), i cannot fault it.
I think the 1650 will be a nice improvement over the 1050 if you can justify it, the 1050 is on the older side now and more entry level. For comparison, an i5 8th gen will beat even Ryzen 7 3750H, so should demolish the Ryzen 5, but again depends on budget. i5 and 1650 would be a fair combo.
that mic quality in Y545 BTW Y540 and Y7000SE also has 85W 2060 in latest BIOS (must use Performance mode)
Hopefully it's just an issue with my unit, I have no way of knowing though as I only had the one to test with. Interesting about the Y540, I've never had the 2060 model to test.
Seems like the Y7000 is available at selected regions only, is that true?
Can you please review Hp Gaming Pavilion 15?
Unfortunately HP don't send me review units and they cost too much in my country for me to buy just to review, sorry. I've tried everything to make this happen. I've sent countless emails to every address I can find, made phone calls, even met with their staff at various events and exchanged business cards but nothing has come of it, so I can only assume they're not interested.

Should do, I will do an upgrade video in future and test a wifi 6 card
Acer triton 500 , msi gs65 and gs 75 comparison would be nice as they all have 3 fans 🤔😅
Hmmm I'd like to, depends what I'm able to get my hands on though.
Isn't the y7000 an old model now? Is the reason you included this instead of y740 the price range?
They refreshed it with current gen specs. 740 wasn't included because it's a bit different in terms of features, and I didn't have one available for the video.
I want to buy a gaming laptop around 1000 dollar. Any recommendations?? Is acer nitro 5 a good option?
Acer Helios 300 on sale with 1660 Ti, Nitro 5 is alright depends on price.
As a student!! What should I Pick JAROD!! If I'm going for rtx 2060!!! I'll go by ur CHOICE!.. do note I want the lap to last atleast 4hrs in class lol
Out of these? Y540 for the reasons mentioned in the video. If in general, if the Helios 300 is cheaper for you, then that will do better out of the box.
Will I really need to overclock & undervolt Y540? I'd only be playing the Sims... 🤔 I wouldn't know how to do it anyways.
Depends on the specs but probably not just try it and see how you go, if you do need extra performance then you can search for guides on KZhead

That doesn't make any sense, are you doing the same test/workload in both tests? I had an issue where the Nvidia GPU was used in both modes until I ran a Windows update with hybrid mode enabled and only then it would go out and grab the Intel drivers to use it.
