  • My grandfather was a farmer and had several barn cats. One day, he noticed a new cat and the cat had an injury. He brought the cat inside and he kept bumping into things. He quickly cleaned up the injury and got him back outside. Two other cats came up-Grandpa knew those cats-and they all took off together. Grandpa named him Louis and he was on the farm for years. He was always with another cat

  • One of my cats went blind (and deaf) the last year of his life. I was amazed by how quickly he adapted to his disability. He recluse himself to the back bedroom, but would come out to drink water and use the litter box. Eventually, I had to put a litter and water dish in the room with him as he started to get frail, but he was a trooper.

    @mightylara2372@mightylara23723 ай бұрын
    • Blind and deaf is pretty tough, even for a cat! Makes sense he chose to stay in one room mostly. My boy slowly went blind around 11 and lived to be 17 1/2 when kidney disease took him. He adjusted extremely well, since it happened slowly. And he still lived his happy life as an indoor/outdoor cat with his cat flap, I know it sounds insane, but we lived in a super quiet neighborhood. I miss him sooooo much.

    • I'm in a similar boat! Our older cat grafually went blind 3 or 4 years ago now and she's been outdoors living in the same house her whole life. She insists on staying out there and only occasionally comes in to demand extra cuddles 😅 They are so so smart and adaptable. ❤

    • I am too! I was worried about a blind kitten being lonely in that one room for their first week at their forever home. Having a littermate with them would help a lot. I've read that blind cats have trouble making friends with other cats, because they can't read visual social signals. But Benedict is already bonded to Sunny, and understands his difference. That makes placing them together perfect!

  • My blind cat is very cuddly and likes to be carried around. When I'm ready to put him back down, I always make sure to either return him to the exact location and position where I picked him up, or to put him down on a unique surface that he can feel and know exactly where he is--the rough door mat, for example, or on my bed, or on the carpeted base of his cat tree. Just so he doesnt get confused by being airlifted and then left somewhere new!

    • This is a great point! I don't make sure to put my blind kitty down anywhere specific. But I've made sure from the start that he'd always be placed securely back down on the ground, with an extra beat to make sure he had his balance, so that there would never be a chance that he'd fly out of anyone's arms in random directions. He knows that when he's done being picked up by any human, he'll be put safely on the ground.

She lived normally for the rest of her life. The vet said she could make out shapes of images if they were brightly lit. I put night lights in every outlet in the house for her. You would not know she was blind. She got around the entire house fine. Even played every day and woke me up at 4:30 am every day.

  • We recently adopted a partially-blind kitten (blind in one eye) He has horrible depth perception and spins around a lot (to get his bearings with his good eye!) but other than that, he is absolute terror! (We love him lmfao) We were really worried when we first got him, because while he could see out of one eye, he didn't understand he couldn't see with his other one and he'd bump into everything on that side. He's learned he does indeed have a whole other half to his body (though still sometimes pokes his eye on toys when they don't meet his whiskers). He's managed not to get any ulcerations thus far and is growing up (and learning) just fine!

  • I found this super interesting, as our late small dog went blind in the last few years of her life. She adapted really well, and I honestly found accommodating her to be a pretty interesting challenge. We went all in on the noisy toys, and she loved them. Some blind animals might have a bit of light perception too, like our girl did, so toys that also light up or reflect light could also be a possibility. The experience left me very passionate about caring for blind animals and I definitely would be open to adopting a blind cat if I ever get the opportunity

The only addition was to keep the main areas of the home free from excess floor clutter. Pepper had his home mapped out in his head, moving a chair or an unexpected box or childs toy could cause injury. Other than that, he had free range of the house and could zoom out with his sisters just like a sighted cat 😂. He was amazing. So smart!

  • I do the hand noise thing with my (seeing) cats! One of them used to be overwhelmed when pet sometimes, but when i started making a hand noise above his head before I pet him, he became so much more cuddly! Instead of jumping away from an unexpected touch, he could signal to me whether or not he wanted to be pet, by either lifting his head up to meet my hand, or not reacting. He was a grown cat by the time we came up with this system, and he caught up to it quickly

  • I have a blind kitty, and the only reason I didn't get him a 6' tall tower is because he's such a lunatic that I know at some point he'd knock it over when he's going full tilt. He's fearless and has no limitation whatsoever. Glad to see you mention the importance of having a signal as to where your hand is. Mine is two taps. Finger and thumb if I want him to find my hand. Two taps on a toy before I throw it (he hates toys that make sound btw, and prefers totally silent pom poms, not hard for an animal who can detect a gnat from across the room), two taps if I want him to notice something on the ground, etc. One thing I don't often see in videos about blind cats is the importance of verbal cues, the most important one being when you leave the house for a long period of time, we say, "bye kitty." But we also ask that everyone who enters the home greets him, "hey kitty." And we have a range of other words like "up?" "do you want sniffs?" "good morning/night" "hungry?" etc. Great video!

For the dog all we had to do was keep the footprint of the furniture consistent and her food and water in the same place. We were fortunate to live in a single story house so we didn’t have to worry about that. Other than the occasional bump or trip she was very normal.

  • I rescued a blind 4 month old kitten to keep her from spending a Michigan winter outdoors. She was missing an eye and the other eye is oversized and membrane looking but stable. She mapped out every room she was in quickly and then just enjoyed life. She fetches and returns, loves paper balls because she can hear them roll. Ping pong ball in the dry bath tub is a huge hit. She is the love of my life, she is so functional that I forget she is blind at times. She is indoor only and I pat my hand on chairs and coffee tables to show her where to go. Rarely do I have to help her get down or get her out of trouble. Blind cats can do anything a cat can do but see. I would take another similar but I am at my limit. Don't let this disability stop you from adopting, you won't be sorry!

  • Earlier this evening I was drinking my coffee on the front porch when i heard a kitten meowing in the distance as if it were hurting or being hurt, the meowing became meows for help and got closer and closer, I looked down the sidewalk and a little kitten came running in my direction all filthy, matted, bumps and wounds all over its body, fleas, goopy eyes, and feels like something hard sticking out on its chest area, it keeps meowing like it might be in pain and i can't get to a vet at all this time of night, i cleaned up the kitten a little and the baby is eating both soft and wet food, good appetite, up moving around and constantly cuddling me, head bumping me and clearly making me mama, I am indeed keeping the cat as my own, but im sending out a cat lady SOS guys I have raised many kittens and cats but a possibly abused kitten in this bad shape is new to me.

  • I've had 2 blind cats and both of mine haven't liked being picked up because they don't know where they're going to ve out down. Of course there are times when they have to be picked up and I make sure I put them back down near an item which gives them a frame of reference as to where they are. My present blind cat goes in our garden because she can't get out and she loves to run around with us when we're outside. Sometimes she'll bop into a wall but she's not bothered and scoots round happily. I have 2 cats at the moment and the blind cat is the boss! Even if she gets pounced on sometimes, she gets her revenge 😼 Her favourite toy is a kicker toy because she can't 'lose' it like she does with balls because she can't see where she's thrown it.

  • I know some people use different textured blankets so their blind pet can also know where they are based on the texture under their paws.

  • The funny part is, that even though Sunny is blind, you can see, that it lives like a kitten should be. About Benedict. From the beginning of the video, it was planning something naughty. It moved around to not get caught, and closed in fast. It might have been stored energy, but that small fast attack in the end shows, that it really was trying to be naughty 😂

  • I sincerely hope they will be adopted together and kept inside so that the seeing brother can help the blind brother navigate. ❤❤
