1920's Live Steam locomotive 🔥💨 ! "BING" - Restoration
Here is a new video !!
This is a rare Live Steam model train produced by the German company "BING" around 1920.
It was in very bad shape, pretty much rusted, both pistons were seized.
I've had to create new labels, not sure about the painting work tho... I did my best.
Some parts were very thin they couldn't be sandblasted. I used electrolytic pickling.
Please watch till the end to see this rare live steam locomotive in action !
By supporting the channel you help me make more of these video and find more amazing items.
I hope you'll enjoy this restoration.

The reason why they stopped making those toy trains is because they cout a lot of houses on fire back in the day, seeing this restored is pretty rare
To paraphrase Santa in A Christmas Story, "You'll burn your house down kid."
Watching it run had me nervous! Haha it's so speedy that if it went off the rails and crashed that oil would go everywhere. I can also imagine that the train got unreasonably hot and burned many little hands.
Tip over and flame job o boy !
@@piperarcher9706 reason it's so speedy is because it's not pulling any wagons!
Uses liquid and fire
Minimal music...no talking...just a nice, relaxing and awesome restoration video. I LOVE this!
Thanks you very much (again) Don ! I really do appreciate it 🙏

The restoration itself is amazing, but to me what's even more amazing is your ability to remember how to put everything back together again!
Thanks a lot 🤣 I sometimes take a while to remember where certain parts go !
@@TheFabrik Good thing you recorded it :P

I was obsessed with trains as a little girl, my great grandfather worked for the railroad. As a child he would tell me of his adventures and hardships back then. Seeing you restore this steam engine with love and care makes my heart happy. Especially since there are so few out there that still do your level of complete restoration. My great grandfather was also German, he would have been so proud to see this engine done and where it was made. Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing.
Hey Jennifer thanks again 😀🙌
One of the best restorations I've watched. Totally impressed with the "before & after" comparison AND the fact that you've got it running ... under its own steam ... literally. Nice work!
Thanks a lot Steven 😃👍🏻

I just cannot believe how great that turned out! It looks beautiful and it runs really well. Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial.

What a shame we have gotten so technical that we don't build Beautiful things like this anymore. Thank God for people who do this kind of preservation.
You know it's going to be a good day when it starts with "electrolytic oickling". Thanks Mr. Fabrik!
Thank you !!😃🙌
A toute vapeur vers le succès grâce à une technicité une minutie en un mot un savoir-faire bravo Greg
Oh André merci beaucoup ! 😌🙌
Incredible job. You gave life again to a piece of art. Wish they made more toys like this today.
They still make model trains that run off real steam today, look up Accucraft and Mamod
SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
Этот паровозик замечательный! А восстановление - просто волшебство!
Большое спасибо🙌
I love the "cowboy" background music during the restoration. I really love old trains but I've never seen a real steam powered set! So awesome to have!
Stunning results!!! Loved the demo at the end...that locomotive has the speed.
Thanks a lot Jill 🙌
This is great
@jill: I think the cone shaped firebox door helped with the aerodynamics. 😀

One of the main reasons that I enjoy watching restoration videos is seeing the various techniques applied in the process. This was an excellent example! Thank-you.
Thank you ! 🙌
some kid from the 1920's must be really happy to see it like this again
Here's what I didn't tell to any engineer restoring anything. Any contraption. Whatever it is, you better fix it up fast.
Великолепно! Вторая жизнь винтажной игрушки! При этом использовались только оригинальные детали. Браво!!!

YES !!! A PERFECT Restoration ! Worthy of a Museum - and it still runs, and runs FAST !
Awsome! I hawe the 1912 model, it's one of my personal favorites. I even managed to find some original tracks and switches for it.
I still have 8 pieces of O gauge track to go with my set.
@@michaelcampin1464 Awsome! Even if those old steel tracks are not the best compared to the modern ones there is still a special feeling to them in my personal opinion that can´t be replaced by shiny plastic. (i hawe a modern plastic Lionel 0 gauge as well, but it mostly stand on the shelf since i lost interest in digitalizing after finding out i needed to replace the whole motor as well as running on DC if one wanted all the modern fetures and i don't want to build an entire new setup only for one single locomotive non of the other can even usel, so i concider selling it even if i love the design and the massive feeling of it, the old Hornby/JEP ones is just to clean and oil and it and put them on the track and they runs! Despite some of them being more than 100 Years old now.). I Hawe the the Basset Lowke pre war steam mogul as well in my collecion, i managed to make a ok deal on it since it was smashed into pices whan i got it, but it was pretty easy to fix with new softsolder. Ï currently working on an RC frame with model RC servos and a receiver for an old model aircraft radio i had laying around, my idea is to make the servos control the steam valve lever and the reverse lever (The double cylinder wersion has that function, the single operated cylinder does not i think othervise the seem pretty identical except for the construction of the steamvcylinders), perhaps also a servo for the steamwistle, that had been fun!
I’m looking for another steam livr loco ;) And that one is my favourite too 😌
Вот это вещь! Думаю, каждый мечтал о таком паровозе в детстве! Реставрация просто супер! 👍 Автору и мастеру низкий поклон!👏

My brother had an-online business selling Japanese brass engines to collectors all over the world. His whole 50’ x50’ basement was a train set up. Great job giving this a new life! Choo choo!
Glad it brings back some fun memories ! 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Super cool, neat that it steamed right up after all that time it spent rotting away.

You are taking us on a journey of craftmanship. When many of these were made by human hands and hard labour.
На такую ювелирную первоклассную работу можно смотреть вечно👏. Главное запомнить как все было😁
I'm usually not a big fan of some of these restoration videos online, but this one really intrigued me! Maybe because I had an old HO train set when I was a young boy back in the 1960's. It kind of brought back some nice memories playing with that set. This one is a bit different than the one I had, as mine was electric. It had these rubber capsuls with what I think was an oil inside it, to make smoke. You would pierce the capsul with a pin and put the oil into the train smoke stack. I wish I still had it. Just that, and the GI Joe I had from the 60's would be worth quite a bit. Unfortunately it was passed on to some other kids growing up in our neighborhood. Our neighborhood was like that back then.
Beautiful! Loved the brass boiler. Another great restoration.

Thanks a lot Michael 😌🙏
Очень красиво и круто. Даже работает как настоящий, на поворотах вагончик с углëм чуть не переворачивается 👍👌
Very, very nice results! Looks and runs great! Awesome job! 👍 The one piece that has the spring that is the cap for the water fill on the boiler is probably also a pressure release so it doesn't explode. The tightness of the screw compressing the spring probably is the adjustment for the pressure relief. On a real steam locomotive they're called pop off valves, in the USA anyway. Not sure how to adjust it on the toy but I'd say research and try to find out the specs on the little steam locomotive and adjustment steps for the pressure relief valve. That is if you don't know and/or haven't done this already. Live steam is fun but comes with some danger if not properly respected.
Thanks a lot William for all these infos 👍🏻😃🙌
@@TheFabrik Echoing @William Bryant 's caution here. That part with the spring he mentions is the "Safety Valve" for the boiler, and the nut on the spring adjusts the pressure relief setting. If you want to keep operating the locomotive, you should really, _REALLY_ pressure test that setting (off the boiler, not on) w/compressed air to ensure it is set at a safe level to keep the boiler from exploding from too much pressure. Also, always be sure to operate with sufficient water. Overheating the metal due to low water levels has caused more "real world" boiler explosions than too much pressure. Distilled water is best for your lovely locomotive, to help reduce scaling and mineral deposits.
@@TheFabrik Just came across this. Aren't you devaluing the "antique" by taking off the original paint, numbers and names and such? That said, I wish I had the memory it takes to put all that stuff back together again. (Minus the help with the video of course)
@@TheFabrik Then again, I guess it's pretty shot. heh-heh.
@@TheFabrik All in all....Wow.
I would imagine these toys were fazed out because they were a little dangerous for kids. Kind of like lawn jarts and the original easy bake oven. Fine job restoring a piece of history. Your skill at restoration is amazing.

Merci !
A live steam engine of this size is honestly incredible. It’s a shame these are not made these days like their pop pop boat counterparts. Toys with actual working steam engines are pretty amazing to see.
Ones like these are big fire hazards, hence why they were discontinued I do how ever have a working 1960s Marx Electric steam engine that creates the steam using friction with a metal plate
@@kingwolf9447yeah I could see why they would be fire hazards. Still though, they are pretty cool concepts and I’m sure they could be improved upon to make them a bit safer.
I know it's cliched but they really don't make them like they use too. I grew up in the 80's and most of the stuff I played with was Plastic and couldn't be restored to "new" condition if someone even tried. There was craftmanship and skill in the building of old toys like these just like there was in the restoration good job.
It's just an impressive work.
This restorations are so therapeutic 🌻🌻🌻🙌🏻
My dad had a Bing live steamer as a kid in London in the early 1930’s. Now at last here it is! I’d never actually seen one before! He always told me he got banned from the living room by my grandparents because it used to go so fast it would derail and turn over on the tight curves and set fire to the carpet 😂. He used to load the coaches with stones from the garden to slow it down. In the end he swapped it for some Meccano with a school friend - I never forgave him for that !! Apparently he never even got all the Meccano he was promised either! Great restoration 👍
Wow what a story 😃👍 Always touching to bring the memories back ! Dangerous toys indeed 😅
Well that's pretty fabulous. I really like the way you pumped the spray cans to simulate the sound of a steam engine!
What an amazing restoration! You did a FANTASTIC job on this - and seeing the engine actually run afterwards was just the icing on the cake!
Thank you very much 🍒🍒🍒
Once again, great outcome 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing 😊

I can tell you have a love of restoring old things. Your work is exsquisit!
Thank you ! Glad you enjoyed 🙌
Praise the Lord for giving us such a craftsman.
Instead of painting - you should Powdercoat! It's easy to do, quite cheap, and the finish is MUCH more durable than ANY paint! LOVE Nickel plating - I think it looks MUCH nicer than Chrome, and no toxic chemicals.
Thank you so much !!! Now I do powder coating ! 😉
Absolutely lovely model and restauration. It is really a small working steam engine! I didn't expect the model to have so many parts and even an operaring whistle. Very cool
Incroyable la patience et la minutie qu'il doit vous falloir ! Bravo 👏👏
It’s amazing that no critical/un duplicatable pieces are broken
Boiler polishing is so satisfying
It's inevitable that a lot of old objects will be neglected like this, but I wonder what happened to this one. It looks like it spent the last century on the bottom of a lake. Amazing work giving it new life!
Sitting in a damp basement could do more damage than that in a fraction of the time. Something that old could be more rust than metal. My cousin cleaned up a basement and found beautiful dishes. At least until they crumbled to dust in his hands. They had been completely ruined by being improperly stored. And I doubt they were half as old as that toy. Something has to be really well taken care of to last 100 years undamaged.
That was amazing. Speaking as someone what has been seeing entropy just dissolve what I used to take comfort in think would always be, Seeing things come back to life like this is some really powerful "chicken soup for the soul"
Thank you very much 🙏
Your knowledge of metals is amazing.

So meticulous and thorough. Beautiful job. Best restorer I've seen here yet. First one I've watched of yours but definitely not the last.

This will definitely date back to the time of the Baltimore Ohio railroad company in 1929. Union and Central Pacific railway joined together in 1869. The black American historical figure John Henry helped us build railroad tracks in an 1872 West Virginia. The birth of AMTRAK, Europe's streamlined trains, New York's underground subways, and the streamline skyline railways of the future.
Whatever could go wrong with that! Great job, but I think I'd want to pressure test the boiler and relief before lighting the touch paper.
That’s a very good idea 😅
Awesome. And the printed repros of the original lithography are quite a feat. But it's the shining copper boiler that's stealing the show (the whistle too 😁)❤️
👍👍👍
Haha awesome how fast it runs in the end. I was so glad you added the decals. I specifically love your transition shots during disassembly. I know that takes a lot of patience and planning. Very well done. Great results

Amazing, But really, have you ever heard of Primer? kind of the thing that makes paint stick better. or do you expect your clients to come back every couple of years? and have the restoration done again and again?
Thanks a lot ! If you’ve watched my other vids you may have noticed that I use primer ;) It’s not necessary to use primer with that baked painting. Oh and I am the client 😛 I just don’t sell the restored items. Thanks again !!
Lovely restoration! A word of caution on the boiler. I had a similar one explode on being fired up even though the safety valve was functional. It made a very big bang with lots of shrapnel and most likely caused by corrosion from within the boiler. These should be hydraulically pressure tested to ensure they're still safe before pressurising with steam or even compressed air. A little oil on the side faces of the oscillating cylinders is a good idea too - lubricates and helps seal. Keep up the good work.
Oh wow thanks for all these infos mate ! I was about to do another steam loco... I think I’ll thest the boiler definitely 😨🙌
May be a stupid question but I thought bronze doesn't rust?
I love restoring trains videos. I like trys and it makes me happy to see someone restore a model train and restore it to working order and saving it from a cutters torch.

I was overwhelmed with the attention to details you commanded. Then the steam engine came to life, and I was blown away……great job.
Thanks a lot !
Wow! Absolutely gorgeous restoration!! And watching you test it was neat. I always wanted to see how a steam engine really works. Plus it went a lot faster than I thought it would! Great job! 👍🍻
Love this! I used to restore Mamod steam toys as a teenager about 20 years ago - this makes me want to dig them out and run them again! Their boilers, fittings and pipes used normal solder instead of silver solder and when fitting pipes to the brackets we’d whittle down a match stick to plug the hole so that the solder wouldn’t fill the pipe. One of the cylinders looked really tight when you were inserting the piston when reassembling - did you have to ream the cylinder out or just run the locomotive in for a bit to wear it in?
First part= no hope. Second later=A LOTTA HOPE
Just goes to show how good the materials used to make this toy were.
Normally for how rare these are, I'd say it's best to keep it original but in this one's case, yeah. I'd probably restore it too. Keith Appleton made a video series on a complete Bing clockwork (wind up) passenger train, a locomotive and two cars. Knowing how rare that particular model is, he preserved it, only redoing whatever looked worst or was missing.
