In India, we don’t say Shin-Chen we pronounce it as the Japanese one; Shin-Chan. I can confirm as I am an Indian. They should’ve bought a small child from India, they know the true pronunciations of every character’s name lol

The reason Americans say Conan as "ko-nen" is because it's actually an Irish name so we're used to actual people having that name rather than the fictional one from the cartoon. I definitely grew up watching some Shin Chan and really loved it! It was translated to English but I still could how absolutely absurd the TV show was and its humor was just infectiously good
Yes, it kind of went full circle. the character Conan was named after Arthur Conan Doyle, the author who created Sherlock Holmes, then they changed the pronounciation to fit japanese pronounciation and then americans just changed it back to the orignal name.
I like ko nen better, that red haired show host is awesome. I remember some actress tried to shame him saying that snuck isn't a word and being from Harvard he should know it.. my man brought out a dictionary, showed her the word and laughed maniacally. 😅
Shin-Chan was a good anime, grew up with both shin Chan and detective Conan, actually looking forward to this years movie with the black organization :D
Conan is also a name we know in French which is why the pronunciation is French. Also, if we pronounced it the Japanese way, it would maybe sound a little rude because it's just one sound away from Connasse

That happened because the Italian anime was not translated from Japanese, but from English (and UK or US are so bad). In more recent times Italian translate directly from Japanese and in fact things have improved a lot.
I really wanna see them compare Pokémon character/creature names in different languages with the original Japanese. It'll be interesting to see which languages use the same names and which don't, and they can give their insights or guesses on the origins of the name (or if they don't know, the host can read it off a wiki site lol)
In Malaysia we have different name for every pokemon. For example for Pikachu we called them as Pikajè, Charmander as Saem. Even Ash Ketchum is called Arash and not Ash.

Most of the names are based on a combination of real words so in a lot of cases they have to completely change it to make it make sense in the language. There are very few like pikachu that don't change much

Japanese and Korean are actually pretty close in their structure and grammar, therefore it's pretty easy to master one if you're a native in the other. However, for English speakers, I'd say that Korean is challenging in speaking/listening since there are many sounds that don't exist in English, whereas Japanese is challenging in writing/reading because of the extensive characters used.
I feel like Indian pronunciations would also differ based on the speaker's mother tongue? Like I pronounce shin-chan more like shin-chyan (if that makes sense) because we have that y sound in my mother tongue. It's difficult to explain but anyway 😅
I think it's because of dialects and languages we have, I actually pronounce it as Shin Chaan because first 'a' sound in my mother tongue is short so we use second a too..

Yes, it famous a scene among Spanish-dubbed anime where they call the name of one of the caracters "Marika! Marika!", which in Spanish means bugger.
This happens for many foreign shows/books/anything aimed at kids. Even Harry Potter's names like Gryffindor, Slytherin, Dumbledore and whatnot were changed in many languages because kids (and even adults) from most other countries didn't know the English pronunciation for them (obviously) and the names would've been to difficult and confusing. Also, names in HP almost always carry a deeper meaning, like let's say Snape. Foreign kids (and again, some or most adults) wouldn't know what Snape meant and therefore names were also changed to carry the implication of him being a "snape" in their languages.

Nobody expected a so big success of the books, for example the Italian editor bought - at a bargain price - the rights of the books in 1996 before the original release which provided for only a few thousand copies, so the translators treated the books like what they thought it was: a children book. Not surprisingly, the translation has been changed twice in the meantime.
I'm french and I (as well as every french I know) pronounce half of these differently. Like Conan (like in japanese) and Kirby (like in american) 😂 I guess it can depend on where we live in France

In the Netherlands we had shin-chan only for a single year. The issue is it was broadcasted on a TV channel for 8-14 year olds, but the kept in and translated all the vulgar jokes, which I loved as a child, and luckily my parents didn't mind it but other parents ended up signing a petition to get it banned and eventually succeeded

In India shinchan has no double meaning stuffs. Maybe subtle which children can't get it.

@@milkycloud. its not. i am admiring how different languages and cultures and how smart people are to understand, comprehend, and have complex thought in a different language that is not their mother tongue. they all know multiple languages and personally I just know french and english and ASL and i do a weird mix of Franglish. They all worked really hard for their language skill set and it shows. very admirable.

Kirby's name is based on the name Kirby. the character was named after a person named Kirby. since the character was in a Japanese game, the Japanese pronunciation was used which is Kābi or however she said it. Kirby is the 'true' name and the names in the other languages use that as a basis rather than Kābi. (or we may have ended up with Cubby or something like that)
@@HipHopLucky7 i'm telling the truth. the Japanese pronunciation is not Kabi(かび), it's かーび. the あー sound in かー is commonly used in Japanese to approximate the R sound when used as a vowel, like in Mark, Bird, or Kirby. the character Kirby was named Kirby(かーび) after someone named Kirby(John Kirby i believe his name was. he was an American lawyer who had worked for Nintendo). Kā is the romaji for かー (i've also seen Kaa (so Kaabi=Kābi)) but the name かーび is the Japanese approximation of Kirby so the romaji for かーび is more likely to be Kirby than Kābi/Kaabi because if they were going to spell it the latter way, they'd probably just use kana to represent it(かーび), while letters allow the word to keep it's etymology(Kirby) and is what i often see with words being able to express how they'd be pronounced in other languages, such as making a discernment between R and L sounds. regardless of how it's spelled Kirby/Kaabi/Kābi/かーび they'll pronounce it かーび which in english sounds a lot like Kaabi (or like Kirby with a Japanese accent)
@@DoroNijimarulight correction, kirby’s name in Japanese is written in Hiragana カービィ which is usually used for loan words and international names. You are correct about the pronunciation with the ー after ka. Same thing applies for Mario
@@SJrad correct, i should have specified i was using hiragana when the name would be presented in katakana. i was kind of using the hiragana just to represent the sounds as kana for my explanation (because i'm better at them haha) then i just stuck in hiragana to not further complicate. and thanks i missed the ぃ/ィ as well at the end of かーびぃ/カービィ of which again the latter (in katakana) is the correct one as you've said. which updates the romaji as i understand it to Kābī/Kaabii if not being represented as 'Kirby' yes thanks again for the catch~💮

You should get a Chinese person on there. The Chinese translations are all over the places, some of them are translated to Chinese phonetically, some literally, some takes the Kanji and pronounce it in Chinese, which sounds completely different.
Fr, Chinese name translations are pretty creative, especially the ones that use phonosemantic matching like you mentioned (where it is not only phonetically similar, but the characters also spell out a phrase with a fitting meaning). (Btw, why are you calling them kanji when you're not talking about Japanese lol)

They're saying Japanese has kanji for certain names, and because these characters happen to exist in Chinese as well, Chinese people will directly take the (Japanese) kanji and read it as if it were Chinese. They do that for a lot of place names too, and some borrowings. For example, Tokyo is Dongjing in Chinese, which is not a phonetic rendering but rather the (Japanese) kanji as it is read in Chinese.
I have heard Doraemon called "Ding Dong" even though all his merch at any Asian market I have been to calls him Doraemon.
@@JamesShow yeah for decades he was called "Xiao Ding Dang" (Xiao is little) Then China adopted the phonetic translation of "duo la ei meng" you don't see these written out on English labels because these are Pinyin. It's a system for beginners to learn Chinese, it's not an effective writing method.
funfact: for some weird and unknown reason (at least to me), Lupin III's samurai friend Goemon is pronounced as "Geh-mon" (with an open "e" sound) in italian, although still being written as "Goemon" i guess the italian dubbing directors decided that reading that "oe" as a diphthong would've been more familiar to italian ears, being used to hear languages such as french, german and english

This might have been more interesting if it could’ve been made like 20-30 years ago (or featured people from that era but Awesome World ain't doing that lol). Anime and JP pop culture are mainstream enough that names don’t generally need to be localized for different regions anymore. Even the characters based on Japanese puns like Rilakkuma and Gudetama get to keep their names now.

I think the only country left the Tsubasa characters as in Japanese might be Turkey. Everywhere is like Oliver, Majid and whatnot…

Ero kitty sounds like a very intriguing adult only version. 😂 Also Conan’s pronunciation in the US is probably heavily affected by Conan the Barbarian. They should have spelled it differently like “Konan” to get the correct pronunciation. After all, most people pronounce the Hyundai Kona correctly. For totally changed character names, they should have gotten a Chinese person on the panel because almost all Japanese character names are totally changed, or sometimes their Kanji names are used but pronounced in Chinese - Inuyasha got this treatment.
The US pronunciation of Conan is heavily affected by the actual pronunciation of Conan, as found in the full name of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the author of Sherlock Holmes). Detective Conan was unsurprisingly named in his honour, making the US pronunciation more or less accurate, accent notwithstanding.

first of all , as an indian , not everyone in india pronunces those anime character names like that ... i mean its fine ... but i personally feeling like im represented over here lol ... but yeah india is vast country with different culture and different pronounciation , beacause it also depends on the dialect of the people where you live . I have watched shin chan in jp with eng subtitles and the same goes for anime shows like kitraesu , monster , anpanman and other ... even i was shocked to listen how different the indian pronunciation are , and it was all new to me in india i can say why its dore-mon .... coz the real name is do ra e mon right ? so its goes like do rae mon ... and some people make it dore mon for shinchen .... its usally be pronounced like shin ch-ayn .... but as i said , it depends upon people dialects , there no issue with it . but it was fun , content overall i love the french pronunciation.

In the french dub of GTO there is that one episode when Onizuka has bowling ball in his hand and say i'm Doreamon and he prononce the "mon" like pokémon not like Alexander, i never hear his version. And we also have Shin Chan on TV, mostly on FoxKids back in the day on a pay channel so that's why not many people know him.
The "ello kitty" would sounds weird in Japan because Japanese would say or hear it as "ero kitty" which means "erotic kitty" lmao😭😭😭
If you want names really pronounced differently, it's especially in cartoons like Ranma1/2 or Captain tsubasa, Card Captor Sakura.. like in french they put French name. Ex: Tsubasa is Olivier, the brother of Sakura is Thomas and his friend Mathieu, Shaolan is Lionel etc.... Etc ..
Thomas? In Spain (well, actually in Catalan, I don't know it for the rest of Spanish territory) it was Toya, like in the original version I guess. I didn't expect this change in the French case.

Other examples: Tomoyo = Tiffany, Shaolan's cousin= Stéphanie, Eriol/Elliott = Anthony, sakura's father= Dominique The only names they haven't changed are Clow and his two guardians😭 (Yue and kero)
In Italy "Captain Tsubasa" is "Holly & Benji", but since I've never seen the cartoon I don't know which one is Holly and which one is Benji.

I think pronunciation differs on various parts of India we mostly use japanese pronunciation in my state exct for kirby bt we pronounce kirby like american one pronunciation ❤ japanese anime and manga are so much famous in India also
Doraemon in Malaysia is like how Indian say. Even though the show' was in local language we pronounce the -rae- like it's an English (or Korean) Word, RAE-chel. Do-RAE-mon.

Actually the indian lady is not right, because Indians do spell DO-Rae-mon correctly, actually in the title song itself they conveyed ot as DO RAE Mon, but some people may be influenced by local languages to spell differently..

Indians who speak hindi or listen to these anime in Hindi speak like her. People who watch these anime in English or in their own mother tongue has different pronounciation. Like for me it's Do-RAE-MON and Shin Chan or Shin Chaan. I can't relate to her though
You should have discussed the difference of pokemon names in Japanese and western. I think this is the best anime to cover for this purpose.
In France Shin-chan is shin-chan. For those who know about it, we say it the same way as Japanese people, he doesn't have a "French" name because it has been broadcasted in France during a really short period, most anime fans don't know about it as they are a bit too young for this Also, we say "keurbi" (like cœur). I've never heard anyone say it the way he says it. Tf is he on about

I remember going to Japan, meeting some people, and I mentioned that I was first introduced to Japanese culture from Hamtaro (out of force of habit). They had no idea what I was talking about until I said Hamutaro (which I did rememver the prononciation since the Hamtaro song is the first Japanese song I learned)
It was interesting to see how stuff was pronounced in other countries. I do remember watching Doreamon on Disney XD and swear they pronounced it closer to the Japanese ver.
Sometimes I wonder if is Alexander a real french? Even he has a french accent I already watched him answering wrong in others videos and now... In France we don't say "dore-mon" as he said it but "dore-mone" like "pokemon" and more we know too Shin-Chan and we also say Kirby "kurby" like the american, not the italian way

As a little kid in the 90's, lots of anime was heavily edited and characters were given Western names, and anything Japanese might have been edited out. Many of the characters in Pokemon, Sailor Moon (the first time it was released), Cardcaptors (now Cardcaptor Sakura), Yu-Gi-Oh, & Digimon. Most anime I remember from childhood kept its Japanese culture, but these aforementioned ones were edited so much that any kana/kanji didn't exist and onigiri were called donuts.

As an Italian I can say that rilakkuma, was not that famous but my melody was really well know because of the anime that you could see on television. At least for me 😂

In Panama (were I live) and basically any Spanish speaking country, Kirby is pronounced like in Italian, which does makes sense because both Italian and Spanish (and French) have a common ancestor, btw, in Spanish H is also mostly silent, however, for foreign words and names, unlike French, we do pronounce it, like in Hello Kitty, for this case, instead of Ello Kitty
It depends a lot on the show and when it was brought over I think. When I was a kid they changed all the names of characters in anime’s to “localize” it. (Like Sailor Moon being changed to “Serena” in the 90’s) But nowadays most translations try to stay pretty accurate to the source materials.
In Italian if we only listened to the"audio"of the japanese name Kirby we would probably write it Kabi. It _is_ totally different. 07:48 And I mean...the subtitles agree with me!;-P

Rilakkuma and my melody are well known in Italy! Maybe not like hello kitty but I remember being obsessed with rilakkuma in the early 2010’s we also had my melody cartoon on tv, it was called my melody sogni di magia and I loved it

i think in the US we would pronounce rilakkuma more like "reela-kooma". ive heard multiple American people pronounce it that way instead of the original Japanese pronunciation.
I think he didn’t know who the character was and had no frame of reference, so he made an informed but blind guess. I hear people pronounce it the same way you described. They pronounce it the same as the beginning of the word “relax” (which makes sense since his name is a shortened/play-on-words version of “relax bear”- with the name pulling its beginning from the English-borrowed word リラクス). However, I’ve heard many people use the Japanese pronunciation as well- it varies depending.
In the US, shin-chan was on TV but it was on adult swim, which is a late night tv block on cartoon network for adults.
In Spain we pronounce it the same as in Italy.
For most of the Indians Doraemon and Shinchan are emotions , even my Parents watched alongside me . Comming back from school at 2 PM , i and Mom had Lunch watching either of the Cartoons . good old days 😢❤

Mexico used to change the names of characters. For example Hikaru from Magic Knight is called Lucy because it's a name related to Luz wich mean light=hikaru. Another example is Kagome from Inuyasha here's called Aome because here is a term to indicate going to poop (Cago) so Kagome would had been like to call her Shitome in English jaja. 😅

Except Shinchan, Doraemon and Conan i know nothing else. Even Conan wasn't that popular as it telecasted only few episodes then closed down but it got me so intrigued so i watched it online and still my fav anime of all time.
Really? Where are you from? Japanese animes were the thing in Italy during the 80s, 90s and 00s. Literally everyone knows them because we watched them as kids, they were streamed everyday on kids channels. So interesting, I thought they were famous in most other countries too.

Some cartoons they didn't show are super popular like Ninja Hattori, Kiteretsu, Ultra B, Lucky man etc. I also think it depends on state etc. Because each state has different language here, the cartoons get dubbed into majorly 5 languages in India. And it depends on the television networks the language has. Where I am from Detective Conan is popular and there are other Japanese shows that are popular.

In french .. Kirby or 'kur-bee' I would say. but "Kyyyrbee" ... I do not know if we all say like that. But I remember people of my gen also fighting about how to pronounce Unreal Tournament, some said 'Un-re-al tour-naman' or just "unreal" (read un-riiii-l) - and others said it properly in english. so yeah it depends of your age, and your knowledge of english I guess. But for sure,in FR anime where support popular - like 30 yrs ago, some stuffs were with completely different names : Nicky Larson (also the name of the anime) in French where the hero name in JP is Ryo Saeba - City Hunter

Shin-chan is popular in France. He must not have paid attention growing up or it was my generation which is millenial and mayve Gen Z don't know about it while in other countries it came out later so Gen Z know about it. In part of Belgium,we also speak French it was very popular here.
If you go through the list of Japanese Pokemon names a lot are different to the USA. ie Satoshi vs Ash and Purin vs Jigglypuff.
In France, we say Kirby like in the USA.

As a french person, the french guy is just straight up improvising because he doesn't know the caracters. We don't pronounce Doraemon like that in french. We pronounce the n at the end like other languages but we keep our R., We also don't pronounce Conan like that, same here we do pronounce the N at the end, We say Conan this way only for "Conan le barbare" but not for Detective Conan. We also don't pronounce Kirby like this, we pronounce the i the same as in english (and keep our french R)

I think part of the reason that Shin-chan and Detective Conan didn't take off in America is because in Japan they're children's shows but in the early 2000s in America they put it on Adult Swim with the more "mature" shows because they were seen as being too innapropriate to air on children's stations. Most people watching the Adult Swim anime block at the time were watching it for shows more like Inuyasha and Trigun and stuff, so Shin-chan and Detective Conan didn't quite fit in with the rest of the shows. Also Detective Conan was localized to Case Closed and all the characters were given Western names for some reason? Idk much about Shin Chan but Detective Conan does have a dedicated following in the west now even though it's never been "Popular" here. Lol I'm one of the few people who fell in love with it when it first aired, though I didn't vibe with Shin-chan as a kid. Sorry, Shin-chan. Also for whatever reason Detective Conan was localized to Case Closed and all the names were westernized. On Crunchyroll the series is under "Case Closed (Detective Conan)" But doesn't have the original English dub and the subtitles keep the Japanese names. I still have the English manga published in the early 2000s with the western names, idk what names are being used now if it's still being published in English. I've never seen anyone in the modern fandom ever call it Case Closed or use the western names though. If you say Case Closed they'll probably know what you mean but if you ever bring up "Jimmy and Rachel" you'll probably get a very weird look. Also if you like cutesy Japanese stuff here you likely know who Rilakuma is even if you don't know him by name, I see him all the time in any stores that carries cute Japanese things like Sanrio plushies and cute Japanese stationary and stuff. He's not nearly as popular as a Sanrio character but he's definitely around and usually in the same area you'd find them. If I showed a picture of him to my friends they'd recognize him but I think I'm the only one who knows him by name. Anyway, this is just some added perspective from an American who happened to know exactly who every single character on this list was lol.
Please remember america =/= the whole west. Here in Italy both Shin Chan and Detective Conan are and always have been two very popular shows.

If you want different, go with 70s, 80s and 90s anime. World wild, since the end of the 90s/early 2000, anime fan/watcher develloped a more autentic taste for japanese-like name, which lead the anime & characters name to be closer to the original names, hence the multiple similitude in this video

They missed Ninja Hattori haha, it's another one of those household name anime! The Indian dub has completely changed the names of some characters in there. The green ninja we know as Amara, the black cat Kiyo, and the pink ninja also has her name changed (forgot her name tho lel)

Kirby is spelled "Kirby" in English and other languages because the character is named after an American who had that name. The pronunciation of the game character in Japanese is Japanese trying to approximate the English pronunciation of the name. In that sense the "correct" or intended pronunciations of the character are the American English pronunciation and then secondly the Japanese pronunciation based on it.
