Fun fact: A Brazilian artist made an entire fan-made Pokédex-like collection with monsters inspired by Pokémon artstyle, but based of Brazilian culture and memes. It's called Bágdex, complete with stats and everything. It got so popular on Twitter that he's gonna turn it into an actual game. The designs are really good!

@@JacsonFreitas18 Not by Nintendo. This is an indie project completely unrelated to the Pokémon franchise (otherwise they'd have legal issues of course). But you can see it as a sort of parody (or more like a homage) of Pokémon/Digimon. It's its own thing, but it works the same way as Pokémon. Such fan designs in general are usually called "Fakemón", usually an artist just makes a few designs just for fun. But this particular project "BágDex" ("Bág" is the artist's nickname, and the creatures are "Bágmon") had the goal of making an entire dex with 151 creatures. It became a thing on social media, then they released a mobile app with the whole dex (not a game, just the dex so you can see the designs, stats, and form what would be your team). It's really well-made; every single Bágmon has their own origin from some meme or aspect of brazilian culture; complete with description, evolutions, types, moves, etc. Then they posted a crowdfunding project for an actual game and it quickly succeeded in gathering a lot of revenue (currently they funded base game + 4/5 extra goals). One really cool thing about this project is that their trailer even managed to feature the same iconic voice actors that dubbed Team Rocket in the anime here in Brazil (in the trailer, their characters in the game would have a role similar to Team Rocket). If they manage to reach the last funding goal we'd even get dubbing for the game, which means we'd get those iconic voices of Jessy and James too. Look it up, it's really cool! It's all in Portuguese, but you can see the designs.
@@JacsonFreitas18 he's making on his own, seeeking crowdfunding. Nintendo unfortunately never (as far as I know) shelter this kinds of game ideas. I know he's making avery adjustment so that the game comes out as something of his own, so to not gain any lawsuits or something

Pokemon naming was a budget decision. During the first generation gamefreak selected the main markets to focus on. Following that decision only the language of these countries (English, German, French, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese) had a translation team to work on pokemon names, every other country (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, etc...) use the English pokemon names, or the transcrition in its own alphabet of English (Russia) or Japanese (Thailand) name. Now that is a global franchise they must mantain this method for pokemon names, except for Type Null and Paradoxes.

if i remember right it was thanks to france that we even had translations in the first place gamefreak and nintendo didnt think about it in the first place but a french localizer thought about it and told them that it'd be better to have the names in french also all the western songs sound the same because all of the anime just derived from the american channels
Pretty sure Chinese didn't even have its own (official) localization at first? Like, I remember they made somewhat of a big deal out of it when Chinese language-options were added to the games, I think in Gen 7. Pretty sure most of the older Pokemon-names are just the Japanese ones written in Chinese characters. And in general, since they introduced the language-options when you first start the game in Gen 6, Italian and Spanish at the very least, maybe also Portugese, should have received their own localizations of the Pokemon-names iirc.

It was actually sung by a man named Jason Paige. But he certainly sounds like Michael Jackson.
France asked to have names different from the Japanese ones from the start. The one who persuaded Nintendo to not use the Japanese names in France actually took charmander as an example. In Japanese he is called Hitokage and the sound of "kage" in French sounds exactly like the word "caguer" which basically means taking a shit... 😅 (his name actually Salamèche in French thanks to them) So Julien Bardakoff and his team worked on the names for the first and second generations. And then some other teams continued afterwards. He was interviewed for the 20th anniversary of pokemon and he said that at that time the American team was nearly finished with the names for the 1st gen so they basically tried to see the translations of the names in Japanese and English names. And based on the look of the pokemon they worked and the translation they worked on the names. They also did a lot of world play too, they also tried to keep the Japanese meaning in mind. They also tried to keep the names related for all evolutions of a pokemon

it's funny because, speaking about the anime itself, all the content we get until nowadays here in brazil is distributed from the usa (and not from japan or any other country), so the pokemon and characters names (and probably many other names) are translated from the usa. that's why they have the exact same names, but we have a "brazilian way" to call them.
It was because in the past most animes were distributed/translated by 4kids, I believe you must remember their logo appearing at the end of a lot of old animes.
Very few pokemon are translated still, such as Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur, all of which end with "ssauro" instead of "saur", as this is also the way we pronounce "dinosaur" (Dinossauro).
USA got a bunch of anime waaay after we did. Sometimes we got stuff from mexico, and a lot of the times directly from japan. Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries were pioneers when it came to anime. Americans used to have their own stuff and were not interested in importing cartoons.

As a someone who watched the entire show in russian The same thing with Brazil Our dubers didn’t change names at all, they put even english lines when pokemons speaking. All names its english version sometimes it changes the pronunciation

As far as the first theme goes, the reason why its the same was due to how marketable it was. It needed to be changed from the Japanese version to the US, so when they were coming up with the song, they liked it so much that every other country ended up adapting the US version and just translating the lyrics. Hence why its the same. Also the opening used parts of the Japanese opening and made some edits such as Pikachu originally went underneath the girl's skirt/dress, but was adjusted. They also used clips from the show to make up the opening. It's why its so different.
In the Japanese version they sing “under that girls skirt” while in the US version there is nothing said at that part
I think it's more about a money reason: so much less expensive to just adapt a ready-made song than to create a new one, particularly with the time they had to do so!

Except Italy. Italy never translated foreign anime openings and they always made their own, original for every anime and cartoon. And they all kick ass.

And I know what I'm talking about because we did that too in France, and sometimes that gives you murder impulses when you hear the original songs that's so badass and ours that's super childish... For DBZ for example, that's just ridiculous!

In Squirte's case, in french, Carapuce, the first part is true, it's from "Carapace" aka the shell, but "Puce" is actually from the bug, the flea. The name was made to fit the japanese idea of making a very small turtle, and a flea is very small, although, he wasn't fully wrong, it adds a certain cuteness to it, and it can be used as an affective term for little girls
I always wondered how Squirtle would translate to other languages cuz in English Squirrle and Turtle almost rhyme and the word squirt plays into the water type so there's 3 parts that go into the name and most likely the words for squirrel and turtle don't rhyme and also don't make the word suirt as well

Also with "Noctali", it's not about Night and Stone, but more a modification of Evoli to fit Night in it (from the word "Nocturne") Every evolution of Evoli/Eevee has this scheme, like in english with for exemple Umbreon, Vaporeon and Flareon becoming Noctali, Aquali and Pyroli

"Puce" means bug or flea but it is also a cute slang used to call someone you know and like especially if it's a girl. You either say "pupuce" or "ma puce"

All French people who love Pokemon understand how difficult it is to explain why our Pokemon names are different but in France each Pokemon has its name with a reference and in France the names of Pokemon are more popular than any version.

Here are some other interesting Japanese names for Pokemon characters: Blastoise = Kamex Kadabra = Yungerer (derived from the famous illusionist Uri Geller) Misty = Kasumi ("kasu" means "mist" in Japanese)
Diamond and pearl, trainer battle music at the end 🥰 So, I'm always surprised to encounter people who are still clueless as to why the rest of the world besides a part of Asia has the same as America when it comes to names, songs, music etc... Well, to explain, because our French dude couldn't, although he was really knowledgeable, the explanation is simple: Pokémon USA has the rights on most of the world when it comes to adaptation and diffusion, which is why, apart from Asia, the whole world has the same names and openings (gotta catch 'em all) just translated (most of the time). Now, we (in France) and in Germany, have unique names (compared to having the American names) because we put money and efforts into it to actually do it. For my country, (idk for Germany) we had the chance to have a French guy, Julien Bardakoff, who was working in Japan, for Nintendo, when the game came out, and who made sure we got our own version and not Nintendo of America's. Thank you, Julien!
For anyone wondering the German singer of the theme song is also in the German band Eisbrecher. And the main singer of Eisbrecher did the Pokémon Rap. It's hilarious. Eisbrecher is kinda like Rammstein, but less aggressive.

the german Opening, like many other old anime openings was done by Noel Pix or by his real name Jochen Seibert, who is famous as part of the metal band Eisbrecher, who do the same style of music as Rammstein. and the pokerao at the end was sung by the lead singer of Eisbrecher.

European countries mostly take the songs/names from the american version, because there are more english/native lanuguage translators, and the english language is easier to translate than the original (when it is japanese or korean), so the whole animation is mostly taken from america, and not from the originating country, and then translated from english into the native language. Therefor we mostly have the same names as in english, or word-for-word translations of the english version.

It's actually more because when 4Kids Entertainment acquired the license, that also included worldwide distribution rights. Saying that European countries "took" songs/names from the American version is kind of inaccurate, since the same company did all of the translations in-house. This also explains many of the bizarre editing decisions made during that time, like the infamous "jelly donut" scene; Eric Stuart explained that it made sense to refer to it as something easier for a worldwide audience to relate to, as opposed to its Japanese "onigiri" name.
In Germany we did regularly use the JP material. One Piece (with exception of first op), Digimon & Detective Conan (Case Closed) we've taken the JP stuff and dubbed/altered it.

Clarifying what a lot of the comments are missing about western versions: Nintendo's Europe headquarters mever translated from japanese because it was a lot more complicated and expensive than translating from english. Meanwhile the Nintendo of America branch had translators from japanese to english both because they were the target export market and they have a large japanese population in the country due to former migration waves to Hawaii. Games from gen1 were localized from english into german, french and italian. While the italian translator chose to keep polemon names as requested by nintendo, the french and german translators insisted on reworkig the names to preserve the nature of maling puns about each pokemon's traits. Something the english version also got by insistence of its original translator who understood the language and humor in those names because he had played the game in japanese before being assigned to localize it.

I thought it was funny that the themesongs and respective animations were different in Japan and Korea. Beyond French and German having unique names, I believe Spain and Italy had the same. The Netherlands used the American version with Dutch dubs. I remember having a couple Dutch cards, but nobody wanted them because they weren't the "proper" ones. Fun to see this though
It's because of licensing and distributing rights, in the west, the US hat the rights at the time, that's why the animation opening sounded the same

Yes, well Germans have a tendency to translate everything haha. I think the Belgium and Dutch people have the same names as the US. I am surprised that French is so different as well. Cute to hear all the differences though! Love that Pokémon is worldwide so well known 😊
In germany and france they started to create own names for the pokemon. In other european countrys like spain or italy they just used the english names. Don't know anymore what the reason was xD So it is still like that today. At least in germany they come up with own names for the new pokemon xD
Apparently Quebec uses the French version, but French Canada, might depend where you are from, and what's the first language. Generally, the English names are used, but the French versions are acceptable.

Please make an episode about anime openings around the world. And be sure to include Italy, we are notorious for making our own original opening for each anime/cartoon back in the 90s/early 2000s. They all kick ass and I bet many people who have no idea would love them.

For Pokemon and some other bigger franchises like yugioh too, they usually make a generic international version of the anime, where they edit out all the japanese signs, remove references to japanese foods/festivals ect. and make new openings (usually more exciting and flashy and less cute or sad), which then acts as a basis for any non-japanese release. That's why the opening themes, visual edits to the show, potential censorship at some parts or even changed episode airing order in some cases are consistent worldwide. Other franchises like Digimon, Naruto or Dragonball didn't have that and TV channels could choose to purchase either the japanese version or already edited versions of other countries.
Digimon definitely did do that and still does that to this day, at least in the US.

Ash Ketchum if I recall was the name 4kids chose to match the mouth movements when they were localizing the anime. Since they weren't going to use Satoshi they used Ash Ketchum which also matched the mouth flaps. Pikachu also says Satoshi when he Pi-ka-chu or Sa-to-shi

I’m from the Netherlands which borders Germany but we have the same names as the USA ones and we also have the exact same theme song, like we didn’t even translate it to Dutch. (I may remember it wrong but I think that was it.) The characters did speak dutch in the series they just had English names.
Time to get a Dutch translation for the games...Imagine Squirtle Spuitcanon lol.

It’s honestly fascinating to hear how the localisation team handled the name conversions in the different languages. For the most part they did an excellent job. Side note though, how many languages can these people speak?? Unless there’s some sneaky editing going on they seem to all understand each other constantly.

For general knowledge. In the lates 90´s and in the early 2000, at the time that the first version of pokemon (anime and games) were released in Brazil, the brasilian companies could only get (or only adquired) distribution rights from american companies and as such, all the translations of animes and games were based on the american versions and not on the original japanese ones. Like, we had DVD releases with english and portuguese audio only. I remember waiting for fan-made subtitle translated directed from the original to be released than watch a version that was retranslated from the american ones. I think that brazilian companies adquired rights direct from japan/korea/china after 2010 when the culture was more spread on the country through popular animes and cosplay, and as such, from that point that we had translations based on the original version. Sadly, Pokemon as the first release was based on the american one, the names will remain unchanged forever.
For the German Version I can tell you the singer... it was performed by "Eisbrecher", before they became famous... they did the whole Pokémon OST in German.
Fun fact, while the US theme is different from Japan, we did get an instrumental version of the Japanese theme in the original Pokémon Pinball.

The reason for the theme song being the same in all western countrys is because at the time, Europe imported all these series from the US because it was easier to translate and the copyright stuff was easier.

I loved this! I grew up watching both the US and a bit of the German versions. It just got so confusing when my friends in Germany would talk about a Pokemon and I didn't have the faintest idea who they were talking about.

The American Pokémon theme is so goated a lot of other countries just translated it instead of making their own or translating the Japanese theme! USA baby let’s goooooooo 🇺🇸

I would love to see more of these differences and these name etymologies for Pokemon. You guys should also add a Taiwanese or Chinese speaker since the Chinese Pokemon names are so unique and interesting!

Growing up in Thailand, the Pokemon anime airing with Thai dub would use the Japanese name, so I would say I know the Japanese name of the first few generations pokemon pretty well. I also read the Pokemon Adventure manga which also use the Japanese name. Even though I don't know Japanese, I think the Japanese name sounds much more cooler and the English name. I mean Geodude?? really?

Ehh, he's a rock (geo) and I can think of a bunch of reasons for choosing 'dude' in particular over alternatives with similar meanings, no idea which is relevant and they're all a bit tricky to explain though.
