Paul McCartney: The Waterstones Interview

Paul McCartney has stated that it is highly unlikely he will ever write a conventional autobiography. The Lyrics, then, stands as the defining literary statement of Britain’s most influential living songwriter. To celebrate it as Waterstones Book of the Year, he spoke with James Daunt about his Liverpool childhood, looking back on The Beatles and how this presentation of his songs sheds a whole new light on him personally and the world that surrounded him.

America. It had one of those big plastic dials with a giant lead weight behind it. That night every single station, all 200 plus, were playing a Beatles record all at the same time at the moment I was surfing. To be sure to what I was listening, I reversed the process from the other end of the dial and got the same result. No other recording artist in history can claim that I believe, nor will they in the future. In 300 years, people will still be listening to the Beatles.

  • Simply a delight to listen to Paul converse on so much that influenced and inspired him with such candor, humility and warmth! He's got such a welcoming, homey, personality which juxtaposes with the fame, fortune and accolades of his life. The Lyrics is a present I'll soon purchase for myself and think it money well spent. Like himself, I love books too. Thanks KZhead for material I wouldn't get to enjoy otherwise!

Elvis was on his own, but the four Bealtes were able to support each other through what must at times have been hell. Their humble upbringings helped a lot too. Sadly, John didn't cope as well, due in large part to his childhood trauma and insecurity, which was one factor leading to them splitting up as a band. But they still all loved each other. So much to learn from these guys!

  • It's the weirdest thing, I find comfort in listening to any beatles interview. I can listen to them speak for hours. For one thing, it's amazing how down to earth and grounded they remained after achieving a level of fame virtually nobody has ever lived. Yeah they went through drugs , alcohol, and their changes but they always stayed humble and true to roots. That's fascinating. I dont think they get enough credit for it. That kind of fame would take a lot of people for a ride outside reality. So that amazes me. Then they just have an irresistible charisma. Thank God at least half of them are still here.
