  • I read a story that Tostig and Harald Hardrada parlayed with a single rider before the Battle of Stamford bridge. The lone rider spoke only to Tostig and offered him his earldom back if he turned on Harald Hardrada. Tostig then asked what his brother would be willing to give to Hardrada for coming all the way to England. The lone rider replied, “Seven feet of English Ground, as he is taller than other men.” Then the lone rider went back to the Saxon host. Hardrada was impressed by the rider’s boldness, and asked Tostig who he was. Tostig replied that the rider was Tostig’s brother, Harold Godwinson himself.

    • Harold Godwinsson was a two faced injun giver ( not a man of his word) I absolutely believe the account of him pledging his support in any dispute over the English throne with William as he was only prepared to do so to get himself out of a tight spot after being shipwrecked. He was quite o.k. with pretending to give his word but after said he was tricked into it and hadn't realised Holy relics were concealed where he swore. His genes live on in bankers and real estate agents.

Stamford Bridge was host to a lesser known battle in 1454, the belligerents being the Percy and Neville families, who were both very powerful landowners at the time. • Gotta feel for Godwinson, he was truly a chad trying to do right by the people of Anglo-Saxon England. His mistake was in falling for William's trap in his razing of the countryside to provoke him to attack before collecting the might of England. Would've been interesting to see what would've happened if Godwinson prevailed and the Anglo-Norse connection remained more prominent than the Anglo-French. It's likely that the isles would've unified much sooner and Denmark/Norway/British Isles would've formed a power bloc instead of Denmark/Norway/Sweden. Who knows, maybe it would've kept connections to Iceland/Greenland/even Vinland more active, as these settlements were active around the same time.

  • An epic tale told in similar fashion. Thank You. No wonder his life took on hardened actions as he witnessed his half-brother Olaf die as King in the battle of Stiklestad, Norway while he was just 15. He was reportedly over 7 feet tall. This physical stature and being of princely origin in exile would harden you and would have thrust him into some positions of leadership and authority at such a young age. Having travelled as a mercenary Varangian to Kiev, the Holy Roman Empire, and also south to the holy land and Sicily... travel in those days also had to harden you. To hear the tale of Harald Hardrada is to bask in the peel of historical lore. It doesn't get any better.

I feel like it's kind of critical - the battle is presented as a pitched battle with both sides fighting at peak capacity (as if the viking army would willingly go into battle without their armour!), when in truth Harold himself was a very competent general and moved his army faster than Harald expected, catching him off guard, army separated and unarmoured.

  • I first learned about Harald Hardrada as a kid in his fateful engagement at the Battle of Stamford Bridge but really it’s his rule in Norway that’s more important: not only there did he earn his namesake, Harald really showed the best of his ability to easily form alliances and break them as soon as their usefulness came to an end.

  • I’ve watched so many history docs, essays and animations on KZhead. Hours and hours over years. I’m putting my 2 pence in and I think this is the best channel. Would love to see an episode on ‘King death’, the artistic and metaphysical interpretation of the Black Death. HistoryDose has the right atmosphere and elan. Keep up the amazing work.
