There has been lots of talk down through the years of making a film like braveheart but not as fictional . Brian was born not far from where I was born. The south west of Ireland is probably the most Irish part. Living along the coast is hard enough to this day. The vikings helped the country ultimately but it was to beat them in the end.
I love celts
Problem is that Mainstream media wants you to see history differently these days so I doubt we would get a film about Irish or Scottish White men and women doing there thing. That would be some how offensive to a very small % of the populace that we all cater to for some reason. So theres that.
@troubledseed counterpoint: you've got a recent movie like banshees of inisherin which is about civil war Era rural Ireland. Not a single POC in the movie and it was nominated for many awards as well. Or look at The Northman, a big budget medieval norse epic, again with no POC characters but nominated for awards and reviewed favorably by critics. The narratives you are exposed to online do not reflect reality.
Machiavelli once said that centralized states are difficult to conquer but easy to rule, while decentralized states are easy to conquer but difficult to rule. The former can concentrate greater strength against you, but have a fixed point of critical failure. The latter might not be able to bring as much strength together at a single point, but individual regions and local lords are used to operating independently. The Vikings kill an English or French king and the country devolves into chaos. They kill an Irish king and the Irish shrug and say "Eh, we've got 99 more kings where that guy came from."
Exactly.
Actually it's that they were easy to invade but difficult to conquer because there was no centralised form of rule
Kind of like how the CIA can rule a foreign country, but can't defeat The Narcos.
Reminds me of the stories behind chess. 🥂🫡
Same could have been said about the Vikings themselves though. Lordship was usually just wrested from the former lord
"In these roaring hours spent hacking and stabbing, men were so doused in blood as to be unrecognizable to their kin. Their spears became heavy with the hair of butchered enemies." Those lines are hauntingly epic.
Thanks! The lines from the 12th-century account actually state that the spears were "clogged" with hair, which is an even gnarlier image.

I did an exchange program last year, and stayed in Clontarf for two weeks. The history of Ireland remains palpable, you'd think Brian Boru had died less than 100 years ago, not 1000. I'm still enamored by the culture of the Irish, how persistently independent it is; it felt as though their ancestors were family, not the distant men relegated to history books.
We're slipping into a morass of corporate bootlicking thanks to the same capitalist propaganda benighting the world. A hundred years ago, Socialists led us to freedom from the heel of the British crown. I've always loved the mental image of a bunch of Vikings trying to figure out what the hell to do about an island with 100+ kings on it. The answer for many seems to have been "screw it, we're Irish now"
Situation: There are 127 kings in Ireland Viking: "I know! I'll invade and conquer the island under one rule!" Situation: There are 128 kings in Ireland
Irish peasants: "Who are you?" Vikings: "We’re here to kill your king" Irish peasants: "....Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrow it down?"
It was described by Vikings that the Irish back in those days were physically huge, even compared to Vikings. The Irish were nourished on beef and lamb and the pastures were green year round in a fair climate.
Makes perfect sense. I am 100 percent Irish, and my Brothers and Uncles are all huge Micks
I worked in construction before and during university in England back in the late 70s. . While many Irish labourers were average size (but very strong), there were some who were huge
All myths, Vikings on Avg were only about 5'7-5'9. sure there were some big guys, but the majority were not. So were the Irish. Now none of this means nothing when comes to strength. They were well fed and Stong
Vikings weren't as big as people think and I think Irish people are bigger than people think. I'm Irish and Native American and I'm 6'1
Its always been fascinating to me the contrast of ireland. The island is a land of plenty. Verdant fields and teeming shores gave rise to one of the most embattled people on the planet. They fought each other for their land as much as they fought others. Often times it seems as though they only banded together to fight off a greater threat so they could get back to fighting each other. All of this is a back drop to one of the deepest repositories of ancient stone monuments and artifacts; belying and undercurrent of pervasive culture that almost seems at odds with the war like people.
this comment is awesome - such great writing!

“The Danes came to Ireland with nothing to do, But dream of the plundered old Irish they slew, 'Well you will in your Vikings' said Brian Boru, Then he threw them back into the ocean.” Great Vid 👍🏻
I'm a student who studies extensively into Early Medieval Irish History, and you've hit the nail on the head with his video. Modern history grossly misportrays the Vikings as having an easy time in Ireland, which they did not. One minor detail I personally feel that should be addressed is that the Vikings did not introduce trading with the outside world to Ireland. Evidence exists of Irish trade with the outside world dating roughly 6000 BC from Jadeite axeheads found in Ireland that came from a Neolithic quarry in Italy. Brian Boru and his victory in Clontarf is also greatly downplayed by museums and historians alike, who act as if though it was a petty squabble that happened for no reason and that no one won the battle, which is utter rubbish. You touched well with the themes of ancestral heritage and the ancient tombs of ancient kings who were still praised by their descendants, it is something that is not often discussed in my experience. Apologies for the lecture, but this topic is one I am particularly passionate about due to how downplayed Irish resistance is against the Vikings and how Brian Boru is treated as a side figure of sorts by many. Edit: I forgot to mention the Scottish, who are often overlooked on this topic. Fair play for giving them a mention as again, they are often overlooked. There's not enough I can say without turning this into a longer lecture and I do apologise, nevertheless, great job with this video.
Awesome! Happy to have your seal of approval! Right, the Vikings facilitated trade but did not begin it. In a longer format, I would’ve also mentioned the lasting material (e.g., weaponry) and linguistic impacts both cultures had on one another. I’m going to post the full script with footnotes and the bibliography in the description tomorrow, but you will see that Sean Duffy’s book on Brian Boru was a key source for this. I think he did a really admirable job of poking holes in the more extreme revisionist takes and analyzing the sources to discern the true significance of Clontarf. In other words, it didn’t “save” Ireland or banish the Vikings, but it did quell a legitimate threat from a people who had just conquered England-there’s a reason why all the contemporary sources regarded it as momentous! Thanks for watching!

Went to Ireland this past August. Stayed at Clontarf castle, amazing place. Thoroughly enjoyed the country.
It's very frustrating that every Viking show only focuses on England we're missing out on amazing stories in Ireland
Mainly because the Vikings were an important settlement in England along with the other Germanic Vikings - the Anglo Saxons and the Germanic Scandinavian Vikings - the Normans The Irish were a smaller mix of Anglo Normans that settled in Ireland though influential
Its funny that the Vikings show was mostly filmed in Ireland and even many places in the show that are represented as being in England or Scandinavia are in Ireland. I don't blame the show for not really showing Ireland and Scotland but they are compressing so much history in such a short amount of time.
And Russia. Vikings conquered those lands and banged the Turks, which essentially created the Russians we know of today. The Vikings literally went all over the world, so yeah to only show British stuff is lame.
When I attended Carlow College. The chosen head of the O'brien clan attended for a speech about Brian. It was an amazing experience, and I spoke to him afterwards. The one thing that bugged us both. Was the loss of his sword. It was taken to England. And somehow got lost??. What an absolute shame.

Hallo from Denmark. Great video. Yes norse kings submitted to the irish kings as client kings. But In the end . The irish kings took greater interest in trading towns. And some irish kings deposed norse kings of the towns and themself took up residence there. But towns like Dublin, Limerick, waterford and wexford started out as viking citystates. But ended up as resistences for the irish kings. And eventuly a mixed irish/norse culture came into exsistence. But that all ended in 1171 . Fun fact: Ireland wasn’t catholic Christian during this time, but Celtic Christian. This was a unique blend of Christianity and Irish pagan beliefs and culture, this was why they were so war like even after converting, their cultural blend of the new religion kept the Irish tied to their war like ways, even bishops became regional warlords in their own right and often warred with other tribes and monasteries.
Celtic Christianity mixed with paganism was the reason, or rather excuse, Ireland was invaded and colonised by Henry VIII with the blessing of Pope Adrian. 800 years ago... unbelievable.

What an awesome way to learn about European history! I am of a small culture that descends from these Northern European peoples. We came down to Africa and have since formed the Afrikaner culture now native to Africa. It confuses foreigners to find white Africans here, but we have made it clear to European colonisers that we are no longer associated with them, and will not conform to their rule. We have fought many wars against the English called the "Boere Oorlog". Some say we eventually lost, however if that were true our culture would not exist. I would LOVE to see a video about Afrikaners as we are also war hardened people. My generation the very first not to have engaged in war. Not yet anyway!

Brian’s army had won the battle at a great cost, and were likely incapable of marching on and conquering Dublin. And even if they had, executing a king was viewed as an extremely serious crime, even a rival or rebel one (Mathgamain’s killing was viewed as especially treacherous). It may have also just further inflamed tensions with Leinster and overseas Norse.
@@HistoryDose They still should have killed him IMO. He shouldn't be allowed to get away with that. No doubt he'd have killed them if he won, but he was too much of a coward to face them on the battlefield.Odin won't let him into Valhalla.😝
@@JerodimusPrime Sitric was Christian by that time. He may invoke Odin and Thor from time to time but overall he isn't looking for a warrior's death anytime soon.
@@jeremiahardales6597 Yeah, I know, I was just making a bad joke😅
Hopefully things work out for the Irish and Brian Boru doesn’t get ganked in his command tent by some cringe Viking who couldn’t take the banter at the battle of Clontarf. [Edit]: Goddamnit…
Amazing channel where every video is better than the previous.
Fantastic channel and content. I’m trying in my own way to show a fraction of what you are doing here!
My father was Brian boru 😢
Brian was my son and he made no mention of you
My dog so happens to be a direct descendant of Brian boru’s dog. He said that they use to go hunting together
The best historical channel by far
Just listened to Dan Carlin’s Twilight of the Aesir II and heard a lot about Vikings getting pulled into all the fractal Irish political struggles. Super excited to watch this.
It was the Guinness that conquered the Irish, not the Vikings. Edit: weirdoes below had to ruin the joke
What do you mean by this
@@Scoob505 Alcoholism
@@Threezi04 the irish were conquered long before guinness and routinely genocided. Interestingly the stereotype, while in some ways is hitting on a reality in irish culture, is overshadowed by an equal if not larger alcohol problem in Britain
@@Threezi04 We were big drinkers when we subdued the picts and forced gaelic in Scotland We were also big drinkers when conqueroring the coast of wales Also big drinkers during the gaelic slave trade drunk irish took 300 thousand britons as slave in a 400 year period before viking arrival Iceland also liven in by gaels before vikings
Nordics are worse drunks than the Irish by a long way. Not sure about historically but in more recent times without a doubt
the title could be "Celts vs the Vikings" as well.
The way you tell these stories is so cool and the history os intriguing
If anyone is interested there is an epic film about this Great King. It's called "The life of Brian".
Thumbs up if this proves Irish were greater warriors than the Vikings
Except they still don't have their whole country back so maybe not
@@Freiheit1232 Were working on it...a little patience 😉
@@Freiheit1232I don't know, the Irish were able to best the Vikings and turn their tactics against them. That's sort of ingenious.
@@Freiheit1232they have a country and speak their language still after living next door to the world's greatest imperial power for hundreds of years.... meanwhile Asatru is illegal in europe, and the most common name being given to babies born in viking countries..... is muhammed
Irish is being taken by Africans now. Totally cucked.
