Here's a tip, when you're digging a hole, put down a plastic tarp to put the dirt on so you don't bury your grass. It's much easier to get all the dirt back in the hole that way.
We just love your channel and find ourselves laughing the entire time. We find Philip hysterically fun and love his sense of humor.
Thank you and I agree with your youtubename! :)
In regard to putting mulch around your fruit trees(or any trees/bushes), make sure that the mulch doesn't actually touch the trunk of the trees, otherwise you will create 'collar rot', which will ring-bark your trees and kill them. Bruce from Wodonga, Australia.
I think you should have maybe soaked the trees over night and put a wee bit of composted soil in the bottom for nutrition , water the hole and then fill with soil. We have planted many a tree here on our farm, great fun to see them mature and produce fruit or flowers. Wish we had tree fairs here in the states Anyways wishing you great success
This is exactly how trees should be planted! Sorry Philipp :D
I was thinking much the same. I’ve never seen trees sold bare root like that here in the US. We get them in large pots or with the roots wrapped in soil and burlap to keep them from drying out. It will be interesting to see how these so. Just be sure to water them deeply for the first few months.
@@cyndiamontgomery6524 I was wincing over those poor traumatized roots; that looks like a rough transition. We consider trees an investment both in terms of cost and commitment of soil (we don't have much room), so we consult our California Master Gardener's Manual to choose the right variety for our zone. Saves time, money and effort.
@@cgg105 I am a Master Gardener in Alabama, and know the importance of moisture on tender roots. I hope these trees make it! Yes, they are an investment for sure!
Your planting instructions are correct!
Mulching under the trees is a good idea. There are bacteria and fungi in most soils that can infect fruit trees if mud splashes up onto the leaves from the ground when it rains. As a soil science student in university, we experimented with using sawdust to increase soil acidity, and found that the impact of it when used as a much is actually pretty negligible. I'd be more concerned that rodents might gnaw on the bark around the base of the trees under or at the level of the bark and kill the trees. You should put collars around the bases of the trees set into the soil roughly an inch, and extending approximately 39cm up the trunk to keep rodents from getting at the trunks. There are flexible plastic ones you can get from nurseries for that purpose, or you can make one from some flexible metal flashing, just make sure it's not too tight or has sharp edges that it will abrade the tree's bark. As the tree grows, you might have to change out the collars for larger ones to ensure you don't constrict the trunk. You did a good job planting them, now keep them well watered for the first year so that the roots establish well. You'll want to water them at least weekly this year. Next year, you'll probably be able to only water as it comes out of dormancy in the spring and then during dry spells. Also, always give your trees a good, deep watering just before the ground freezes in the fall so they've got a reserve of moisture to support them as they wake up in the spring.
'*the psychological term is "denial defense mechanism"' these captions are really getting me today! Another great vlog :)
I so agree!!🤣
It was so sweet how Phillip was so concerned about his lovely wife and her eye.:)
So why if so many know how he should have planted his trees , maybe you could volunteer , just saying
My mother taught me to dig the planting hole, fill it with water. Sit the tree in it. Once the water has drained away, then plant the tree. And water again. This ensures there is sufficient water for the new tree. Akso beware the Mexican Orange Blossom. I have one. Its now bigger than a Volkswagen Beetle.
Most fruit trees need a cross pollination tree double check you may end up with 2 more trees for your orchard Looks great
I’m loving all the advice in the comments section so I thought I would add my two cents. The Garden Answer channel plants hedges and trees frequently. The husband found a large single person Auger to drill holes. They saved themselves a whole lot of time over digging with a shovel. We love your channel and the idea of you digging for the next year, so we never see you again, was a sad thought ..... so I hope this helps🤣. Love your humor. It’s so needed in this day and age.
The Garden Answer channel is absolutely the best resource for planting information. Very knowledgeable.
Couldn't agree more!
hello fellow garden answer groupies! Laura and Aaron are the best
I love garden answers.
I always watch Garden Answer. I've learned so much and last year went crazy on annuals.
So lovely seeing other areas of your property. I can't wait to see the Coach house and the wooden building you mentioned. Your Vlogs are amazing...keep up the great work!
Hubby and I cracked up when you told the girls they can't play with i(the drone), it's not a toy...but you play with it the whole intro hahah hopefully they grow up and adopt your sarcasm Regarding the tree planting. There is a bit less soil because you removed the sod (dirt and grass) it is better to mound up fruit trees. Don't change what you have done thus far but in future when you dig the hole put the sod in the bottom. Grass side down. Then put some blood and bone meal. Some soil. The tree and fill in. Don't compact the soil so much around the tree it is not so good for it. Tree bark and tree chippings are good weed suppression. If your grass is very invasive place a layer of brown cardboard down and then the tree chippings. It should not acidify the soil too much unless it is pine. Save that bark for around blueberries or azaleas. Also lastly take care with the liquidamber tree. I recommend not planting it within 4 meters of a building or pipes. The roots are very vigorous and thirsty. They will grow and seek out pipes and in Australia have been known to crack pipes for water
The charcoal from the fire will also sweeten the soil. May I also suggest that instead of burning your green waste you either rent a couple of goats or buy some to eat it. Your soil will also benefit from their manure. You have so much space that you could make some huge compost heaps and you could use it to improve the soil around the chateau. The purpose of the mulch is also to reduce moisture loss from around the base of the tree. Another suggestion is to include some appropriate fertiliser to reduce the shock to the tree. Happy gardening. I envy the huge space and abundant rainfall which we don’t get n Australia.
Just a tip. Carry a shovel when starting a fire. You can push things back in or put out fire that made it to the grass.
I like Phillip...he's very creative with his reasoning (excuses). 😄
You should have put water and compost into the hole before the barerooted tree. Make sure you water it daily for the first while and fertilize on in summer
This is quickly becoming one of my very favorite channels. Always so happy when I see a new video has been posted. Enjoy putting your new garden in. I’m sure it will give you much pleasure. Love and hugs to you both
I have planted things too close together also, I feel your pain Philip. At least you found out early enough to fix it. I give everything a little extra room now because some things grow a bit larger than the tag says it will. I also soak anything bareroot in water before planting (not sure if you did that, just throwing it out there). Happy planting, it quickly becomes an obsession. I never leave the nursery with only what was on my list.
Hi there! Love your videos!!! Phillip, before planting ANY bare root plant you’ll need to soak them in a tub of water for at least an hour so they can soak up water. Amend the soil with compost or manure or find out what that particular plant needs and add to soil. You’re doing a great job! Thank God for mom’s right?
Totally random comment but Anna has the most perfectly arched eyebrows ever!!
The editing, the music, the humour, absolutely delightful! I love other Chateau channels, but yours is becoming an absolute favourite!
Too funny! You two are so much fun and so wonderfully supportive of each other, even with goofy mistakes. Love following your journey.
When covid is over, the first place I want to visit is your chateau!
You've chosen great plants! I suspect you will need another apple and pear if you don't have others within 15 meters for pollination.
Oh thank goodness, I thought it was just me who was coming to say this. Usually they have to be different breeds/varieties for fruiting. Apples in particular are strange.
I agree. They’ll need another of each if they want the trees to bear fruit 🍐🍏
Yes, you will need another of each for pollination.
I agree that you have to provide for pollinators but you are in Calvados, probably 1000s of apple trees within a mile. They should be fine.
Love your family .the banter between you both is so funny .
Would say on your other trees, you may want to amend the soil with a slow release fertilizer and manure to promote growth, also the wood chips...are they bug and disease free? You don't want to bring a problem into your orchard. Have you checked to see if those fruit trees need a second tree to pollenate or are they self pollinators? Should be on the tag. Just some thoughts ....looking forward to seeing you plant out your other trees and flowers.
Thank you for the tips!
The conference pear definitely needs a pollinator. An historic one like the „Boscs Flaschenbirne“ works for a lot of pears, so your are on the safe side for upcoming pear plantings. I recommend to give your trees a hold with a pile. We made very good experience with only one diagonal pile and to tie the tree at the half height of the stem. Adjust the pile in the direction of the wind, so if the tree bends in the wind, the pile goes down even stronger in the ground. 😉 Slow releasing organic fertiliser and rock flour helps a lot for the start. Mix with the soil before filling the hole.
@@christinerudolph587 Remove the pile after about a year - once it has "grabbed in" with its own roots - to allow it to strengthen trunk and roots in response to natural wind. If you have rabbit problems, be sure to protect the trunk, or they will girdle it and kill the tree.
Philip you are so funny, I smile and laugh all the way through the video. Thank you both for another great video.x
Such a lovely calm couple, really enjoyed their videos
no expert advice...Only thanks for making my life extra enjoyable watching you both...Massachusetts USA
Heaven to shop for the garden. Almost impossible not to get carried away. Happy for you guys. 🌱😀
😂😂 Already laughing & it hasn't even started yet! 🤣🤣 ...last one was a beezer too, cant wait for this one!...thank you for the Sunday cheer, lovelies 😁😚💖
HA HA I love this funny and more importantly Smart and Witty Channel. So nice "Dan The Gardner" and the other Chateau Creator joined your live stream. I didn't know that you all knew each other since some of you are 5 hours away from each other in France. BTW.......CONGRATS on your subscriber numbers getting higher and higher in such a short amount of time. When you are big and famous, don't forget those of us than originally came over from Stephanie's Channel. lolol Have a great week.
Glad you enjoyed it and no, we appreciate every single one of you and the lovely Stephanie and her Lalande Gang! It's so lovely to get to know all the other chateau owners through those programs.
So nice, to be a kid again, making flying sounds and pretending a drone flight. Your daughters look and act like Anna, so sweet.
The drive and the areas around the château are looking lovely and tidy.
If Phillip hadn't dug the trees too close the episode wouldn't have been nearly as fun. Good luck getting it all in the ground.
I love Phillipp's. quirky silliness.
Also a tip when planting anything bare rooted stand it into a bucket of water for an hour or two before you plant it they have a much better success rate when the roots are hydrated.
I can’t wait to see all of your lovely plants and flowers when you get them planted! Everything already looks nice outside but this is really going to make it a home! Hope Anna’s eye is okay! 🌸
Philip: "I'm not a cut flower guy." 🤣🤣🤣
Don't forget to keep the wood ash for the rosebeds ! Do you have a wood chipper as those branches would make great chips ( not of course the ketchup loving ones)
You two are such an adorable couple!! I love your show!! Keep 'em coming!
Anna's pronunciation of Anemone had me wondering for a moment, then I realised she'd wandered over the linguistic frontier and was saying it the French way, where the final E goes silent.
Looking forward. Busy night watching Chateau vlogs but enjoyable.
I know it's exhausting isn't it? 😁
It is a Monday morning and we are in the second year of the pandemic (sad) and here I sit at my computer laughing my head off at you two especially with Phillip. Thank you for another great vlog :)
Such a joy to follow you two around! Phil and his constant teasing and humorous approach is so entertaining. Anna you handle it all so well and it obvious you two were made for each other. I hope your eye will be okay. Got to thinking that even though Phil started the fire and you had to tend it?
Nice job with the fruit trees Philip. I don't know about the mulch, but I'm sure Dan knows. If you don't know Dan, you should meet him. He is very knowledgeable and quite a friendly guy.
Oh yes Dan the Gardner would definatly know He has his own KZhead as well Escape to Rural France.
The woodchips as mulch on top is a great idea, it’s when you mix it in with the soil you get problems, on top will help keep the moisture in. Make sure you keep up with watering them regularly for the first few weeks 👍🏻 great job, you got some beautiful trees and shrubs 😊 and flowers and bulbs 😆 xx
One of the greatest KZhead finds so far!! You have me laughing so much! Ty!
I just subscribed to your channel today and have started binge watching! I Can’t wait to see once the chateau has been fully renovated! What a gorgeous property!!
"I don't know how it works, but it disappears." I love planting flowers throughout the year to grow my cottage garden and SAME. Why is there never enough soil to refill the hole.
Your coach house is amazing !
Ps I don't know anything about growing fruit trees BUT there's a famous youtube channel called Garden Answer and she just planted a ton of fruit trees. I'd highly recommend watching her planting videos and as a follow up she showed in a later upload earlier this week how now is the time for the northern hemisphere to spray fruit trees in order to protect them from common diseases. x
Another amazing video lovely Anna ❤️ & Philip now I want to go and plant fruit trees 🤣❤️ also you did it before the 15th of March which is absolutely perfect 👌 X x x
Thank you, we definitly need some tips from you, guys, your're gardens are amazing and Philipp is so jealous of your beautiful formal garden you made whilst being filmed for ETTCDIY
I'm honestly so excited to see the garden finished and full bloomed! I love watching your videos, makes me want to visit the countryside of France and have my own chateou. Can't wait for the full tour of the garden and all those buildings we haven't seen yet! Love from Portugal!!
Hope you watered the fruit trees in well. You could soak them in a bucket before planting. Oh and make sure not to plant below the graft point. And a stake & tree tie driven in at 45 degrees will help them establish.
If you saw the graft point was above his head
He also made the soil extremely tight, that's where the soil disappeared. It might be so tight that it won't suck water.
These trees did not look grafted
Great entertainment, love your sense of humour while undertaking all the jobs around the chateau. Have a good week and keep the banter going 😂
Wonderful tree fair! I would have loved to be there. Gardening is such a peaceful activity that gives the body a good workout too!
Love the tree fair and the drone shots were great. The production keeps getting better.
Love your sense of humour Phillip, another great blog x
We are loving your humor. Keep it up.
Phil, I am also a father of 2, and at times I feel like I am supposed to always be “mature.” I think we know the importance of playing, being silly, having Peter Pan moments, and never growing up. Let’s never lose the ability to have fun and be silly! (Cue the drone and sound effects!) Phil, all joking aside, your concern for darling’s eye was so sweet! You are a good man! When planting there is a well known rule! Measure twice; dig once!
Very enjoyable vlog. You may find that you’ll need a trunk protector for your new trees as critters love to chew on bark. Seems interesting that you planted in a your lawn rather than in a walled garden. I don’t remember if you have a designated garden area, but these trees would do great near a stone wall and facing the full sun. Take care.
Loving the drone shots of your chateau and the tree planting haha 😂😂.
Loved seeing the tree fair!
This week's vlog was on fire 🔥 mate 👌
Drone game strong! - Nice trees. I hope Anna‘s eye is alright!
Oh hello! Lovely :) So many Chateaux vlogs tonight! I’ll have to make a list of times 😊🌷
Nice drone shots Phillip. Looking forward to your garden flourishing. 🌿🌺
That was lovely to see you go to the plant sale and the garden centre and planting of the trees. Can’t wait to see the rest of your planting.
Soak all bare root plants. Dig hole. Add well rotted manure to the soil. Plant out. Put stakes and ties on trees to support them for the first couple of years until they have a strong root system. You’ll need to water in the heat for the first few years too. I’ve planted many trees and shrubs with great success so good luck and enjoy.
Another great video! You two are fun to watch!
I wasn’t even at 15 secs and could not stop from clicking the Like button! I just love your channel!
I can so relate - my husband and I do everything at least twice before we get it right! 😂
I just love watching the progress you've been working on in the Chateau :) xx
I’m always so excited when I come upon an episode I haven’t seen before! I watch episodes more than once. Love your blogs.
Love the drone sound effects! ;-)
Thank you for treating us once again with a lovely video. Looking forward to see what are you planning for the garden.
Hi Anna & Philipp @11:05 someone wants to be in your video 😊 Just such a wonderful vlog, you both are such a great couple and always has me smiling the whole time. Hope your eye is okay Anna. Love seeing the rest of your property, the coach house looks wonderful. Thank you for taking us along on your plant shopping. Take really good care of yourselves, stay well, be safe! Much love Kathy x
Ana - I feel your pain! Maybe wear safety glasses next time to keep out smoke as well.🤗 Philip - your comic attitude makes even the most boring task hilarious. Good luck with your gardening! 😊💕💕
Yes I agree! I’d like to see greater use of safety boots, gloves and glasses. I’d hate to see some serious injuries with all the work you’re undertaking!
The town with tree fair is beautiful. I backpaced around France yrs ago. We were there for 3 weeks, loved your part of France. Love your channel
A lovely, lighthearted, funny and interesting vlog. Loved it and look forward to the next one.
When planting bare root trees, to give them the best chance you have to 'praline' them with a mud mix, add some bone meal and decomposed manure, make a soup and coat the roots before planting, just a suggestion as one year I planted 120 trees and lost none of them. My old farmer neighbour used to look over the fence, shake his head and ask me 'how much did that hole cost you' !
Maybe they can do this for all the other trees and hedges they have to plant, as it looks like they'll ge planting for the next month!
@@jessicathespy When you have a lot of trees to plant as a hedge it's worth hiring a bore. Not of course the kind that talks a lot at parties.
LOL!
@@HowToRenovateAChateau I hired a gardener that talked more than he worked so I told him that it was actually possible to talk and dig at the same time. He thinks I'm very foreign and I think that he is very French so everything takes a long time.
I think he forgot. 🤣😁🤢😄🤔😭 Without saying that you usually plant fruit trees or any trees at the sainte Catherine
Always enjoyable and filled with many chuckles. 😃
Again a great Vlog, really enjoyed it!
Oh dear - they needed to be steeped in water for a while before planting? X
Can’t wait to see your garden plans grow! And in such an idyllic chateau setting! Kerry Lynn from 🇨🇦
Lovely film as always, love trees. 😊
It’s lovely to see some overhead drone shots....... I love how your main driveways delineate a heart! Fabulous, tasteful, very funny, very compelling vlog you have! Keep up the brilliant work, and many thanks for sharing!
I know from my past mistake, one needs a pair of fruit trees for them to pollinate each other to get fruit. So maybe you need another apple and pear?
They can get a crabapple later on down the track. They cross pollinate apples very well and it is possible they can extend fruiting season then A crab apple that flowers for 4-6 months will provide cross pollination for many other variates and not to mention they are gorgeous garden interest and alternative floral arrangements
Not only do you need a second tree but you need ones that will pollinate your specific tree, most of the time two of the same variety will not pollinate each other! You need to look up which specific apple or pear pollenate the one you have. Crabapples work well for apples too and is a magnificent ornamental as well just like Emma said.
All this talk about crabapples reminds me of some jelly I bought last fall at our local market... crabapple jelly is very delicious too.
Your planting skills are superb. I can't wait to see the apple pies and the pear tarts!
YOU did a GREAT JOB Philip! Just remember that those plants are babies so you have to water them not a lot but everyday. Sorry about your eye! LOVE from Chicago
Love your channel. You two have a great sense of humour. Keeps things very interesting.
You two crack me up!
It might be an idea to attach stake supports to your fruit trees. High winds and storms could see them breaking! You two make a great pear! Absolutely, love your vibrancy and humour with the channel. 😍👏🏻🇬🇧
Great tip!
I wish I'd been at the tree Faye! What a beautiful day out. I loved the 'denial defense mechanism ' 👍🏽🙈🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing. Have a beautiful week. xx
As usual, a lovely video and thank you for sharing! I know nothing about planting trees, but it looks like great fun! I enjoy all the humor! And your Chateau and grounds do look lovely!
Great job guys. Blessings.
Always love watching your vlogs - they never fail to crack me up laughing 😂. Loved the drone above thé château and seeing your heart shaped driveway xx well done and thanks for the entertainment
These videos are delightful. I am really enjoying them. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Think this may be very amusing. Love these blogs 👍
