  • This movie 🎥 by Greta Gerwig REALLY moved me, as I peeled back layer after layer. Homeless, unrequited, Black Sheep Ken REALLY struck a chord with me… and not because he’s male. But because he was always an outcast, & never figured that out until he went to the Real World, & tried to fix their dilemma with patriarchy. Ken’s disastrous mistake actually set in motion the chain of events that led to BarbieLand finally acknowledging that those on the fringes deserved better treatment. Not just the Kens… but Weird Barbie, Allan, Midge… all the discontinued Barbies & Kens sheltering in Weird Barbie’s house.

They never ever suggest Barbie has a crush on Ken and she is a doll without any sexuality so she has no desire for romance or kissing. Why should she? We are ultra programmed to see any closeness between a man and a woman as sexual and romantic. That is a limiting, oversimplified and harmful belief system we are all caught up in. Girls waiting for a prince charming Ken to save them is why the patriarchy perpetuates itself.
