  • Poor little guy. Could you imagine the living horror of your back being broke and 2 Lions breathing down your neck? The loyalty of the other hyenas is awesome. Hard to come by.

For example, the laugh (which shows frustration, not amusement) holds the age, identity, and status of the hyena making it, but not the sex. Puts a different light on the laughter when hyenas are feeding: a laugh means somebody wants in, and if they can be safely ignored (low status) or get the hell outta the way (high status). So they're highly symbolic animals, like humans. One reason...

To me this appealing seeing people deprive an animal of its offspring to feed their delusion of a world where animals sing hakuna matata. To me you are as cruel as animal fight rings, just that these kinds of people glorify themselves as enlighten and superior to their fellow human. A dog raises its own puppies, a lioness her cubs, simple. It's cruel what those PETA affiliated media are doing. • Well, there's no arguing about taste, and I won't deny the lion is strong and beautiful. But as far as "just knowing" what an animal can do, there's a lot about the hyena that was only discovered in the past fifty years. It was only in 1972 it was discovered the (spotted) hyena hunts more than it scavenges and that lions can steal as much or more from the hyena than other way round. It wasn't until after 72 that the structure of clans was figured out and with it the complexity of hyena ...

  • This is excellent video taping, although I do feel happy that the Hyena survived if only initially. How did his legs get messed up, and what happened in the end? Did he go off with the other hyenas? Did the Hyenas adopt him or abandon him?

  • The worst part is how much hate hyenas get even in situations like that. They are just trying to survive like any other predator. People say as excuse they hate them because they eat their preys alive. But wolves, wilddogs, bears, dogs and many more predators do the same without getting hate. Even big cats mostly play hours with their terrified prey before killing it. That's nature and just we humans are capable of feeling mercy and being evil, we still kind of slaughter really many animals in brutal ways for our meat. So it is kind of pathetic to judge the hyena.

But give other predators/carnivores a pass. No other animal will stick it out and scrap with lions like hyenas do. They are some tough animals for sure!

  • Very interesting behavior by the lions and the hyenas both. First, that the lions just followed the gravely injured (adolescent) hyena and didn't kill it straight off, before other clan members started showing up. Second, that the other clan members showed up at all and gave the injured hyena a safety perimeter. The injured hyena must have very high rank and/or the lions are getting too close to the den.

    @ScisMacGillicutty@ScisMacGillicutty12 жыл бұрын
  • I'm hesitating between "these males are still just too young to have their hyena-killer-instincts fully awakened; if they were a bit older they would have killed it off" and "they know they did enough damage that it had 0% chance of survival; they were just trolling it". This seems to be an adolescent hyena; it's small and the other hyena's actually seem to protect it which they wouldn't do for a fully grownup.
