    • @@Grissom_Outdoors Another poorly thought out what-if scenario. I'm 74 and have hunted all of my life, since the age of eight, with a recurve. Your motivation is not in protecting natural prey from superior predators. People like you are too far removed from the natural world to ever achieve enlightenment. There are (x) number of predators in a given area because the prey population will support it. You, sir, are part of the problem.

  • My set is something similar, I do not do the step down however. I put sticks and straw parts of grass so there are sharp points sticking up because they are very certain of their paw placement when they are unsure of something. I get my first coyote and then all I use is the stomach from one and cut it into pieces. Turn it inside out. Put it back in the hole. The smell is primal. They are fed from throw up when they are pups. They ALWAYS step into the trap. Same process just not as much digging. He is spot on with this set. It will work every time. The only way it has not worked is when they slip the trap. I have had just toes left behind. They will never go to another set after that. They will live to be old.

  • Instead of the extra weight of a drill with an auger, it's much easier to just use a rebar stake driven in the ground. Wallow it around and it creates your bait hole. If you stake your traps, you're already carrying the bars so it's not extra weight.

We caught 111 cats in 6 weeks in 1983-84, no bait, no lure. Trapped them for 8 years in California, footholds. Cages do work well also. One California trapper got 130 cats in cages one year. You could use double door cages in trails or with bait or single door traps as cubbies too. Colorado is using some of our double door bobcat traps for cats in a study. The Canadians are using them for a Lynx program.

    • @@Grissom_Outdoorsto catch a catn you must find a cat. Setting "on sign" for cats, kuch like pine parten or fisher truly is paramount to putting fur on a board. Find an area with cats, then find areas within that area that cats use. Toilet areas, brushlines, logging roads etc. From there place flagging above the set, and clear a well worn trail to your set and past it. Bed a trap on the apraoch trail and your "final curiosity" lure(feathers, hair, etc) about 18-24" past where your trap is bedded. Youll miss some fox and coyote on this set but for cats its hard to beat. You can REALLY unnaturally guide a cat. Use brush or thorns, not logs as theyd rather walk atop larger blocking like wrist sized wood or larger. Its quieter so theyll take the stealtjiest way you give them

    • @@Grissom_Outdoors Dont get me wrong , it's a good set and has its place , but there are several reasons why it will miss more than it catches. #1 being that it relies on bait and that a predator needs to be looking for food and commit to it to be caught. If his belly is full , he most often isn't interested in it. That's why blind sets will catch more than baited sets. This set in the video will catch more fox and bobcats than coyotes because of trap placement. Bobcats and fox are hole huggers and fox are more aggressive at a set than coyotes. The trouble with Bobcats is that most often his curiosity is satisfied the first time and if he doesnt get caught , then its pretty much overwith for him and that set. No pan cover and no guides will also result in misses. A varmint can step on the jaw and toes can set off the pan , but the jaw can throw the foot out. Guiding the foot will reduce it. For every coyote caught at a set , there is in all probability 10 or more walking right on by totally ignoring it. Those that do investigate , but don't commit , stand out beyond the pattern , sniff around , then move on. A big hole and bigger bait will catch more over a small hole and small bait because if a predator like a coyote that might be feeding , may pass on by because he's going 2 miles away to eat steak off a cow carcass. His mind is elsewhere. The biggest problem with dirt holes is rain filling them full of water. . Down here in the South where it might rain every other day , they'd be out of business.

Or when it’s got mange in the middle of winter and is freezing to death be proud of yourself for not disrupting anything. Better yet let it eat your cat calf or small dog.
