Dirthole Set - trap coyotes, or any predator with this set

The dirthole set, or its variations, have no doubt trapped more animals than any other set out there. If you want to know how to trap you need to learn how to make this set. The biggest key is you've got to make sure your trap is firmly bedded so that it doesn't shift under an animal's foot if the animal doesn't step right on the pan the first time. This set will catch any and all predators, coyotes, fox, bobcat, skunk, raccoon, and possums to name a few. To learn more about trapping visit www.coyotetrappingschool.com

  • After 50+ years of trapping in Idaho and Oregon l have learned a few things! I never used a pan cover. Only use house insulation under the pan, just tear off a piece big enough to fit under and that's it.

    • Gregory McGuire waxed paper is what I all ways use, some guys use window screen but the soil I deal with is sugar sand and it will sift through the screen so the wax paper works best for me, it’s cheap and unless a lot of wet weather it lasts a long time.

  • To encourage your animal to step on the pan use guide sticks. Maybe two pieces of broom straw (something small that will not render the jaws). This works with canines also but especially works very well with cats. They will not step on anything they think will "pop" around there next meal therefore placing there paw directly on the pan. My dad trapped for 40 years and passed on that trick to me. Works on every set including trenches holes dens etc.

  • Hey Brother, just discovered your channel and knew immediately it was a no Brainerd I had to subscribe! First, I want to Thank You for sharing your wisdom that was developed from your body of work! Second I live in Tuscaloosa, AL and have just over 2K acres leased bordering the east side of Sipsey River about 10 minutes from my office in the industrial park. I went to the lease yesterday and carried one of my men to help me pull cameras to get them ready to relocate for turkey season. Due to me forgetting about it being valentine's day, we were only able to get 9 of the cameras. Upon reviewing cards for what percentage of the mature age structure survived hunting season and to document how many 3.5 year olds also made it. This wasn't hard because I literally had 1 client hilunt all year. Lol; however, was more focused on surrounding properties. I personally didn't actually hunt but the 6 times running cameras w/ a riffle I killed 3 bobcats, should have killed a double on the 3rd kill, first time I didn't get a shot on a cat, trip that followed killed a male coyote. Reason I'm providing this data is to explain why I never fathomed it was imperative to trap until late last night. After checking all the disc retrieved it's unreal the number of cats (all sizes), coyotes, 3 that look like wolves traveling together. Numerous times 2 or 3 yotes would approach a 200lb plus buck and you could see them flanking the mature buck! I've seen tracks running mature bucks tracks but assumed it to be dog tracks. After evaluating my thoughts there's no dogs and I assumed dog due to I would have never thought yotes would consider a mature buck as prey, WRONG!!! This is based on my area and I'm sure each is different. I have to get going before turkeys begin nesting and this issue has to be gotten under control! Can you please email me so I can provide you with my contact information. I am expecting to compensate you for consulting time. If the learning curve is too much to get this under control I will not be comfortable until I hire a professional to ensure I have done my duedilligence. We will never knock beavers, otters, coons back; however, these must be managed also. The river bottom is miles and miles wide of swamp bottom and the last animals come w/ territory, when a group is gone next moves in. Oh yeah hogs but just began showing back up this month. We will see how this goes but my friend has 3 remote traps to help mitigate them. Sorry for long message, it's weighing on me heavily though. Thank you in advance! My email is: jerrod@mmfal.com Ki d Regards, Jerrod

    • I just use what is on hand, or bring my own. I like using T bones from cows, a small clump of grass or rock/large stick that is at the set. I usually pick my specific location dependent on what is around to use for backing. I use polyfil (pillow stuffing) under the pan

  • I have a bunch of those bullet point stakes, but now only use the Wolf points from Minnesota trampoline products. Make my own using the same 5/64 cable l snare coyotes with, cut at 20 inches. Never lost a dog yet out of hundreds caught! I just just leave them in the ground! Use a quick link to connect the chain to the cable, or you can just go through the last link on your chain and pound the Ferrell one just cut it off when you're done there. I use lots and lots of blind or trail sets, no bait at all. I just know where a dog is going to walk. One spot l had 6 trail sets in less than 40 yards and had 4 dogs waiting for me that check! I like to set a big stone log or break a piece of sagebrush off to narrow down the spots where I set the traps! Hahaha

    @larrywalden626@larrywalden6267 жыл бұрын
    • This was just a demonstration. It varies widely on time to catch, can be anywhere from day 1 to day 14. Usually for predators if you're in a good area within the first week you will have caught something

  • With my previous unscuccesful attempts, I made a backing from sticks in the shape of two sides of a triangle with one side open where the trap was located. My bait was leftover chicken. I caught everything but coyotes. Is this not subtle, as is recommended at 10:43? It's worth stating that I only saw coyotes on trail cam yesterday while hearing them in the distance often over the last two months. And, they were chasing two does.

    @zacktube100@zacktube1005 жыл бұрын
    • Yes that stick backing will work on coyotes. How long did you leave the traps? Coyotes are pretty wary and can shy away from sets for a variety of reasons. I've had sets go 2 weeks without any activity before I catch a coyote. Also, need to make sure the trap is bedded firmly with ZERO movement whatsoever if the coyote steps somewhere besides the pan, and that there is no scent contamination. So you've had your traps set through the summer? Summer can be a tough time to trap coyotes because there are ample food sources available, and its tough to keep bait in some areas because of ants. Did you have any type of lure that has glands or curiosity scents, as an added attractor to get the coyote interested in your set? As you can see there can be a lot of variables, but hang with it, when it clicks and you catch one then you've got it!

      @coyotetrappingschool1575@coyotetrappingschool15755 жыл бұрын
    • Coyote Trapping School I only started in July because a neighbor showed me a coyote den at the end of woods but I now think that it is abandoned. The raccoons and possums kept taking the bait. I am currently de-rusting and painting my traps with Rust Oleum and will get some coyote scent as a lure. I will also relocate the traps to near the deer trail where I saw them on the trail cam.

      @zacktube100@zacktube1005 жыл бұрын
    • Patience is a virtue when targeting yotes. Exception being when long-lining. Then I moved traps every 7-10 days depending on what I thought the population was. Takes a lot of land to longline!!

    @eddiemosier1296@eddiemosier12965 жыл бұрын
    • I lost 1 coyote that pulled the stake and took off with trap and all. Occasionally you will drive one into a hole underground, like a rotted root hole. Usually you will notice that the stake went int 6" in one swing and I know to test it then. If you drive those anchors down to the chain they will usually hold

  • Kris, I know you don't usually watch all your subscriber's videos due to the massive amount of time it would take you but if you get a minute, would you take a look at my new video and see if you think what's prowling my deer food plots repeatedly is a fox or coyote? Personally, I thought it was a fox but a trapper I respect says it looks more like a coyote. I want to trap whatever it is before fawn drop happens in about two more weeks. What lures, urines, or baits would you recommend for a summertime trap set? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I trapped two fox this last season but I don't know if trapping in summer is different. Both are nuisance animals which are legal to take year round here in Mississippi.

    @TrehanCreekOutdoors@TrehanCreekOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
    • well, I haven't checked back on the video but what was the consensus? You ever set any traps for them?

      @coyotetrappingschool1575@coyotetrappingschool15754 жыл бұрын
    • No way to know for sure. Pretty good possibility of both a coyote and a fox visiting. However, per the game camera whatever it was has not been back. Probably that is because the deer are dropping fawns right now and the does are staying back in the woods and not in the food plots. I put out a couple traps but the only thing that has wandered through so far was one raccoon which managed to catch itself in my trap. I'm getting much better at setting my traps thanks to your videos. I have tried to make my dirt hole sets as close to how you do them as possible. I put a plug in the video for people to check out your site. Your one of the very best in this business as your style of teaching is easy to follow and you don't spend your time boasting about how great a trapper you are, like some of the folks who consider themselves to be trapping gurus. Thanks for all you do, Kris. Much appreciated!

  • I'm using wolf-fang cable disposable anchors to hold the trap can you use these for several years or should I put new anchors in each year?

    @herbertnewman4595@herbertnewman45958 жыл бұрын
    • You could use them a couple years, just watch for any fray or damage on your cable. The first sign of damage I'd trash it. You could reuse the anchor part and just make your own cable.

  • I've been having trouble with coyotes rolling on my set. What techniques do you use to prevent them for rolling?

    @BrockBarron@BrockBarron7 жыл бұрын
    • Where are you placing your lure at these sets? If you can put it down a dirthole or under a rock, something where they have to work to get it that might help. Rolling means they are interested, which is a good thing but you want to catch them before they start rolling. Tainted or really strong lure/bait can be causing the rolling too, you might try using a milder lure or a smaller amount of lure and covering it up with a little dirt, still down a hole, to diminish the smell slightly. Hope this helps

  • You should turn your trap 90 degrees in either direction so the jaws close from the side. The way your trap is facing now increases the chance that the releasing of the jaws will "throw" the animals leg out of deepest part of the jaw set.

    • I think he made a great set! I set my dog at 1 o clock. I have been doing it this way for years. For me it's a perfect set and i have caught over 50 coyotes this way. If the trap placement is good then he should hit the pan and the jaws will never touch his feet until they close around the foot. I guess everyone has their own way of doing things.

  • All you do is once your set is completely done you two very small straight twigs and lay them on both sides of your pan on top of the ground (your pan will be under everything and set). When the animal walks up and looks for a spot to step they will step where there is no debris AKA the two twigs therefore they will step dead on the pan. Twig pan twig about 4 inches in between the guide sticks with the pan dead center. This is a good set he's showing you I just have always used the guide sticks instead of dirt clods because no predator hunting or sneaking up on food will step on the twigs. Like I said this works amazing with cats and foxes. The few videos that I've taken off of my trail cams setup on my traps even the yotes we'll come in and step in between the guide sticks.. And I also use some mb traps. They only have to be about 6 inches long. Extremely brittle and dry. That way they will not block the jaws. About the size of a coffee straw.

    @smalltownoutdoors9442@smalltownoutdoors94425 жыл бұрын
    • It all depends on how wary and experienced your particular Coyote is, once bitten three times as shy...I've had them come in the 'backdoor' no matter how much debris I've used to block them out...that's when I 'double up' the set....that usually nabs them.

  • One of my favorite coyote sets besides the blind set, is what I call the "shit set"! Hahaha! Just a nice big hairy coyote shit sprayed over with a little urine and a trap set oh about 8 or so inches back away right off the road or trail. In some remote places l gamble and set right in the middle of the road! I can see them from a mile away in the trap! I had an Einstein coyote play with my shit sets for a few months until he fucked up and stepped in one of my trail sets on a rocky hillside and pulled a 40 pound rock and rolled down the hill and was next to the road! He was a big old boy that was damn near the size of a wolf! Only a well placed trail set will get the smartest ones sometimes!

  • How do you handle the trap after you catch something but don't do a remake?

    @ZachariahYoung@ZachariahYoung8 жыл бұрын
    • +Zachariah Young If you make a catch and then pull that trap it needs to be cleaned and dyed again. There's no issues resetting it where you made a catch because everything smells the same, but if you move that trap to a new location the smell of the trapped animal on the trap is going to stand out like a sore thumb and will cause your trap to get dug up.

    • Beaver is amazing. Where I live in Pennsylvania it gets damned cold at night during the late season. Beaver doesn't freeze up as bad as leaner meats do. The animals want to eat it and it produces odor even in extreme cold. It's a great bait.

  • I bought a trap to trap coyote that’s been hanging my house . I no nothing about trapping. I set the trap tied it to a fence post put some meat around it and left it. Came back next day there was no coyote in the trap but did catch a skunk. So set it again .the next day had no coyote but had a cat. Well that’s the end of my trapping days. Like I said I no nothing about trapping or traps it’s a MB 750 by Minnesota trapping that thing is hard to set to.

What about when those animals get overpopulated in an area and a disease like parvo or distemper comes through and kills a large number of them, or they get hit by cars and rot on the side of the road. Isn't it better to proactively manage their numbers and get the use of a natural, renewable, sustainable resource than for them to rot on the roadside?
