5 Survival Traps and Snares that WORK! - Primitive Traps

When it comes to finding food in a survival situation, traps and snares are a key survival skill. In this bushcraft survival video I'll show you how to make 5 survival traps and snares that work. We'll first take a quick look at the simple and effective wire rabbit snare, then move on to the spring pole snare. In case you don't have a good sapling close by, I show how to make a lift pole snare, aka a flip up snare. Then I'll show how to make a baited cubby snare with both a sapling spring pole and a Spanish windlass trap setup.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow making, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

  • My ex wife was seen snooping around my house. I used the cubby snare method and used my wallet as bait. This worked wonderfully, this is a tried and true method.

  • Scrolling through the comment section and seeing a reply from Clay on nearly every single comment is so admirable. Not only are you such a skilled survivalist, but you're also such a genuinely good person. This is what I consider a true "influencer". Keep being a great person and I absolutely love the content. Very therapeutic for me

  • I live in a small apartment because I work with youth in the city, but I used your video to build a trap out of a soup can, paint stir sticks, and an old wrist rocket band. Got a squirrel outside the window today, and grateful that it's fast and merciful. I've learned a ton from your videos, especially when I started out with archery a couple of years ago. Still practicing towards getting a deer this year or the next. Thank you Clay.

  • As someone who studied marketing and has found the over saturation of pushing materials and other merch annoying, I found the way you included your socials and book quite nice as it didnt interrupt the flow of the video (until I stopped to write this) and actually made me feel like checking out the book based on what you showed here. And thanks for the survival tips :))

  • You are a very good teacher on survival. That being said you are very thoughtful of the animals so they do not suffer long. That is a admired trait for a trapper to live and work by. Due to the food shortage that is going to be at everyone's front door your traps will come in very handy to put meat on ones plate. Thanks I do appreciate your methods. I will be back to learn more from you.

  • The best way to be successful is to set lots of snares…I normally set at least 50 up to 150! Some set hundreds of em! During warm weather you need to check em at least daily but when the colder weather comes you can check em less often. When the snow comes you need to have em flag taped or similar to help you find em as the terrain will look dramatically different now. You also need to adjust the sets as snow builds up or down! After setting your snares check em on the way out…you will sometimes have caught one in short order! Good snaring!

  • Awesome. Seems like you could mix and match a few methods depending on your materials, like swapping out the cantilever or sapling for the paracord torsion arm to make a spring trap that'll raise the animal into the air. Or use a cantilever for the baited cubby trap.

  • Hey Clay, we have a decent amount of snowshoe hare on our acreage. I tried trapping some with my kids last year and I have tried other years as well and never been successful at just planting snares on their pathways. Decided to try the windless snare. Used some vegetables as bait. Had to figure a few work arounds for setting it in the deep snow. I didn't get a picture as it was getting dark just as I finished getting it set and closed in. I will post a pic later on. Thanks for the sweet vids.

I once fell into homelessness out in the San Jacinto mountains and had to survive with a broken down car way out there for just a couple of weeks out there and all I did was starve, people don't really understand how hard it is to survive the wilderness alone and starving.. everyone comments and criticizes but they've never had to skin their own food in their life. Anyways congrats man, you really earned your fame. You should do another season man, I'd put money on you

  • Great Demo mate. I have had the most success using the first method but by setting many traps. When in a survival situation saving your energy is paramount to making it in the wild. The first method requires less energy output and can effortlessly be set up countless times using not only wire but cat gut (nylon) boot laces, or even string made from flax.

  • I do not give respect lightly, rarely does someone gain my attention. You Sir, earned both. I spent countless hours tracking and learning to set snares as well as learning to find water in places where many think there is none, all under the watchful eye of my Grandfather. His teaching of hiding in plain sight saved my life. To understand nature you must become one with nature, you have accomplished much. When dealing with nature remember to look and listen with your Heart and not with your eyes or ears.
