  • The only change it needs, is to have a recessed "bait cup" so that the mice don't wipe off the bait when they slide in. If it's recessed in a cup, the bait stays on indefinitely. Install on a taller 7+ gallon bucket to hold more mice.

  • The genius of this design is really the magnet I think. It means that there's no feeling of instability and the mouse has confidence to continue moving along the plank. The actual moment of imbalance is so brief that they can't usually react (though I've noticed one or two clinging to the plank for a few seconds before they slide off). It's so clever!

  • A workaround for killing the mice in water would be having only an inch of water with some cooking oil in the bucket. The water will wet the fur of the mice causing them to be too heavy to jump out. The oil should cause slippage when they try climbing out. They should still be alive [but wet] in the morning. FYI - I'm getting one of the small ones. I want to use it outside. I'm going to cut the hole in the bucket right at the top and put a lid on it. I will put the bait in the center of the bottom side of the lid so they will see and smell the peanut butter but never be able to reach it.

  • Your barn seems to have a lot of mice running about looking for a feed! Reminds me of the bad mouse plague we endured in South-Western Qeensland Australia this time last year. The roads had mice running all over them. It was absolutely horrible & devastating for farmers! Locals used the bucket system where an old whiskey bottle or glass bottle sat on a chair horizontally, with half the bottle & neck sitting out over bucket. Bucket sits just out from the base of chair. I think some oil was rubbed alomg the neck & peanut butter at the very end of the neck... as mouseys run along bottle, they slip on the oil & fall into tall bucket.

Other traditional spring traps I have had mixed results, and the electric shock trap hasn't caught one mouse either (I think the hole is much too small and the food tray is not the best (should be larger), I should have bought the electric shock rat trap instead, some of the mice are very large.

    • @@natalieisagirlnowI see the cone like a slide, they will not be able to climb back out. They also will not jump on it because of the slope , so we still need the diving board. Its just an idea, its ok if you don't like this. I see it like a live trap or just to help Shawn to keep his catch's.

  • A bucket with bran flakes (chicken fodder) floating on six inches of water works a treat, and you only need a ramp, no 'trap'.

  • Have you come across something similar for meadow voles? A repeating type trap that does not depend upon trapping them at their entry/exit holes?

  • Odd that it's one of your favs. We bought two on your advice. We caught one tiny mouse and when I went back later, it had escaped the 5 gallon bucket. I've caught more with old-fashioned snap traps.

    • apparently you did not use it correctly. Either use a taller bucket, or put water in it. And use better bait.
