  • Shawn, either of these methods make great kill trap to put in a trailer while in storage over the winter. Put a mixture of 50-50 antifreeze in the bucket to prevent freezing and the anti-freeze acts as a preservative so the mice don’t rot for months. Clean up in the spring is quite simple. Great video.

    @jrcanuck2638@jrcanuck26385 жыл бұрын
    • @Mark Hunter just be cautious. Antifreeze is sweet and readily consumed by pets like dogs. It is toxic and often lethal.

      @internetperson2314@internetperson23142 жыл бұрын
    • The idea of antifreeze is that it removes the surface tension of water which means, the mice don't float and can't swim, they drown immediately.

      @bertohlsson6921@bertohlsson6921 Жыл бұрын
    • @@bertohlsson6921 antifreeze is just to keep killing mice in the winter and so the water doesn't get super gross right away. surface tension is not the reason we use it, mice drown just as quickly in liquid water as they do in antifreeze. We use dish soap for fly/wasp traps not antifreeze but thanks for educating the masses big brain..

  • Hey. I have an improvement that might benefit both those traps and I thought I'd share it with you. I noticed the peanut butter would scrap off bit by bit with the falling action. Since you added a cover to the trap, you can also add a hanging bait on a string, a treat kabob if you will. You might never need to re-bait again. Having the rats or mice stand on 2 legs would put their weight all in one spot making for a sure dunk/roll. Perhaps even ninja proof! Hope this helps.

They can also emerge from the toilets. Hopefully, when you are not sitting on the throne. Needless to say, I was freaked at this development. I quickly hired a pro but they were dragging it out to increase the return visits. I bought my own traps and had both caught after another five days. But, I never handled them as casually as I seem him do in the videos. Wish I had seen these methods while I was fighting that invasion.

Not only can they smell it (food) they can't climb up the inside of the bucket, especially important for live trapping.

  • Shawn, To prevent the mice from jumping back up onto the stable part of Walk the Plank you can shroud the stable part with a piece of plastic or wood. Fasten the shroud to the side of the trap and make sure it goes up to the top of the bucket. Now they can only jump up to the plank which will collapse when they grab it. You can also shroud the complete side of the trap so they can only grab the front edge of the trap which will collapse. The shroud would create a hallway for them to walk down till they collapse the plank.

I've been here 20 years, usually I could get rid of them easily with a couple of old fashioned spring traps. About 9 months ago it seems like I was invaded by an army that just keeps on coming. I've been using mostly sticky traps now and the little shits won't eat bait. I'll get 6 or 7 at a time. It creeps me the hell out. Then a couple weeks later they're back. I'm buying a couple of these not going to modify the bucket. Thankful I don't have rats. If I did, I'd just move. lol

    @5herwood@5herwood5 жыл бұрын
    • Ed. Farr agreed. At my camps, we are often gone for longer than a few weeks at a time in the winter. This is what we use. I cant tell you the last time we changed the “water” we usually scoop the mice out and fling them in to the wood stove. Note that it’s a good idea to place this under a counter or somewhere that dogs cant access at all.

    • Also, keep the floor/water-to-entry hole/woodwork distance several inches taller than the longest mouse/rat you want to keep in the bucket. Also, they cannot chew their way out thru the wall of the bucket if they are swimming. I finally used a 32" tall kitchen trash bin with a dome lid to dangle the bait. At some point you could even catch cats, just use both peanutbutter & mouse as bait.

I would probably use toothpics or some kind of skewer for the hinge (like a pencil), but you probably could still make it out of cardboard if you're really wanting a challenge. If I was good at origami, I probably wouldn't need glue, but lets face it, I'm lazy. ;)

    • If you're interested in validating that it traps mice, I could probably CAD design one, then after I get it done well, make a template you could print out and cut the pieces out of cardboard. Let me know pretty quick, because i'm about to be extremely busy designing an airplane. I normally don't do free work, but if I can design an open source mouse trap that could help developing countries lower disease from rodents with simple materials/trash, then that is certainly a worthy cause. I just don't have any mice to validate for real that it works (I can simulate them with the weight of a mouse, but its just not as good as the real thing).

I want to try out the plank type mouse trap and also the rolling log trap as well but I want to see them like you do when they get caught. That is if you don't mind sharing the type of camera that you use. I tried a trail camera and it didn't work at all because they were too small I think. Thanks a lot for you time because I know how busy you must be all the time editing you awesome videos.

  • Thanks for the interesting video. Maybe worth considering is replacing the plastic bucket with one of porcelain. (No drilling through the sides.) Mice and rats cannot climb on it. I once saw a raw that had climb up inside a sewer pipe and through a low flow water toilet, which I would think would be a pretty tough swim to survive. But the rat drowned when it could not climb out of the bowl even though the lid was up.

  • I tried the rolling log mouse trap in a 5 gallon bucket (height just under 15 inches) and the mice escaped (except one smaller one). So, I found a 7 gallon bucket (height 20 inches), and the mice still escaped. I would much rather deal with a live mouse than a dead one. I found that a standard flower pot saucer (diameter 11 3/16th outside diameter) fits perfectly, but defeats the repeating possibilities. I drilled air holes in the saucer. The mice make enough noise when trying to jump out (it takes time -- but eventually they succeed) so that - (at least inside the house), one will be notified that it's time to cover up the trap. That's how I knew I had a mouse, but, alas, upon awakening in the morning, it had escaped. Mighty mice! I think I I noticed a mouse jumping from the bottom of your bucket up onto the rolling log in your video!

  • Another improvement potentially, is to add a stick with bait on hanging from the lid so that you don't have thd issue with the trap running out of bait or something in that direction.

      @Movie2Documentary@Movie2Documentary3 жыл бұрын
  • Hey Shawn when you brought out the trash can and took off the lid it made me think right away since it is a flip top lid that you could almost bait the lid and the mice would fall directly into the trash can similar to that as the walking plank.

    @chrisbentley9615@chrisbentley96156 жыл бұрын
  • I have seen one of these with a much longer plank which is held horizontal by a magnet, the mouse/rat gets much further along before it trips so less likelihood of them stealing the bait and leaving. Also 3 inches of water in the bucket stops them from jumping up to escape. The addition of a small cube of dry ice will fill the bucket above the water with carbon dioxide so the rats die quicker.

I always wonder about how you never wear gloves and or a mask when you are around the caught dead mice/rats, etc. Are you not worried about the germs they carry. Would you do a presentation on the reasons why you feel safe and educate us on the subject of being around mice. I've heard all sorts of horror stories. Thanks.

  • Have you tried using some sort of oil or lube on the inside of the bucket to prevent them from climbing up the sides to get out? Also, I think the Walk-the-Plank traps could have been located higher up in the bucket. Same with the rolling log, but you'd need to figure a way to locate it higher up with some sort of attached block for it to fit in as the bucket would be too wide for it to fit otherwise.

Also in this version of the walk the plank trap, I believe if you could have walls on both sides of the plank it would be a great improvement. And of course, the rolling bar and the planks have to be higher

  • I think that, since you had the two w-t-p's set up in the one bucket, it looked more like a solid bridge. Mice were probably more likely to be less cautious because of this. I've caught a few mice with only one of the original w-t-p set-up. My buckets aren't wide enough to accommodate two.
