Several of my older relatives would rather have an iPhone with the home button over the faceID. • I used to sell phones at Best Buy and in my experience, the iPhone SE is for people who want a phone that just works. Usually older people would purchase it simply because it is reliable, familiar, and their family owns iPhones (which means they get iMessage and their family can help them with any tech issues). The A15 is also nice because the target market tends to keep their phone for a long time, and the better chip ensures better performance long term. I feel like 5G is just thrown in there to future proof the device and because 5g is kinda a buzzword that makes the phone sound better. Also I could be wrong, but I believe 5g antennas usually have more reliable 4g signals than standard 4g antennas. Overall I think it's just meant to be a reliable easy to recommend device. Yeah you can buy a cheaper android with "better specs" but the overall experience for what the market will use the phone for will be much better

    @4FrogsStacked@4FrogsStacked2 жыл бұрын
    • I've never worked at bestbuy, but I've had an iPad pro for about 20 days and the ui so far does seem simple to use and not even that my neighbor who is old has an iPad and find it simple to use. So an SE that you stated in my opinion seem right on the spot. Basically I agree with your statement 100% coming from an android user.

      @skyecloud968@skyecloud9682 жыл бұрын
    • @@skyecloud968 I remember Apple started using gestures for their entire main lineup and older folk were having trouble using gestures to navigate because they were used to the button, which is why the SE has a button. I feel like Apple is only sort of trying to compete with budget phones, and moreso trying to say "look guys we have a phone for the whole family, look how well these Apple devices work together". Apple has benefited heavily from using social pressure to convince people to buy their hardware. If everyone in the fam is an iPhone user, you probably will be too. I'm an android user but I would still recommend the SE over a budget android if you're concerned about reliability.

      @4FrogsStacked@4FrogsStacked2 жыл бұрын
    • @@EeBee97 Definitely. Selling tech has definitely given me a different perspective on tech in general. I almost never talked true specs to people when we were discussing phone options. It was always more about lifestyle and familiarity. I would mostly say vague things like "this has a better camera". Most people don't care about that stuff unlike use tech nerds

      @4FrogsStacked@4FrogsStacked2 жыл бұрын
    • @@4FrogsStacked OMG that reminded me when I first built my pc and my parents found out and was wondering why and tried to convince to buy an apple since 95% of my family have apple max laptop since it does connect to their apple TV. lol I always felt like apple was kinda like for simple people and android was like for open non simple people. You are right now as to why apple started with their SE because even though 95% of my family has apple one of them uses a budget smartphone because of the price and because they don't use there phone for much just for calling, texting and quick photo.

  • The iPad Air getting M1 was a shock to me. The sad part is iPadOS hasn't been fully utilized to use all of this power. The iPhone SE wasn't really much of a surprise and more of "keep the old body, have new internals". The iPhone SE should keep the same design for now because it could raise the price of the affordable iPhone. The M1 Ultra was really shocking to me, since I believed the M1 Max was the limit of M1 chips. I'd say this is for people who need what the M1 Max can't provide, which is a very small minority. The new iPhone 13 colors are a nice touch, but not that important. I like how Apple is releasing smaller and more affordable displays (I say affordable because I'm comparing the Studio Display to a $5,000 monitor, not including the stand). That's my take on all the recent releases.

  • As always, amazing insights Arun. My thought around the A15 added to the SE. I think that was more to do with Apple reducing the complexity and need to continue to create an older bit of silicon, and instead optimising all their hardware to use the same chips - reducing their hardware and software operational expenses, whilst justifying an increase in price. Albeit this is just speculation from my end, I don’t think the SE is a low margin device from apple, in fact, I think it’s one of the highest margin devices (just due to how little it has to pay down in r&d and material cost) - just a thought.

My guess would be 4x M1 Max and then just having PCIe lanes for expandability and just entirely drop RAM DIMMs. Probably similar design as current Mac Pro but not as deep since it doesn't need space for RAM DIMMs but just space for 16x PCIe lanes. I wouldn't say performance numbers with old Macs is that impressive since it is really old computers. And also interesting they didn't want to compare their CPU with AMDs but just Intels which got 8 performance and 8 efficiency cores and way higher Watts than AMDs 16 core CPUs.

Sure android companies set the innovation standards for apple, but apple takes them and makes it industry-leading. Apple literally needs android because apple's mindset is to see how things work in a real setting, and see what it can improve, likewise, android does the same. Both companies pave the path and follow the other's lead. In terms of features, android definitely wins, but apple isnt focused on that, they're focused on performance and the OS is merely an after thought. The opposite is true for Samsung (the biggest competitor to apple) as they create new features, but lacks in chipsets and software optimization. With the new generation of chips, however, theres definitely alot of room to grow seeing as its new, but still, the specs apple is giving out, is without a doubt insane. Apple makes secure OSes and satisfying designs (haptics, materials, even packaging), while Android gets the point for flexibility and choice. One thing I like about Apple is that they'll not introduce something until they think they're done with it. Aside from the Apple Maps fiasco, anyone remember the last time Apple introduced a feature that felt "half-baked"? On the other hand, Android phones are always on the cutting edge of tech, cuz they have companies like Xiaomi, Huawei (RIP Huawei, cause of death: US ban) and Samsung who push the whole industry forward with stuff like huge displays, foldable phones, giant camera sensors, etc.

    • It's called x86 and its an instruction code. It's the programming code that 95%(guess) of the worlds software requires. Now, websites do not care usually but business most definitely cares. Nearly all websites are running on systems using x86 code. These chips are only good at running Apple software and Arm coded software. The theory behind x86 and Arms RISC are light years apart. Making versions of software compatible with both is not an easy task. This is a cool for ARM tech but its NOT a game changer... Unfortunately Windows is very secure in the global market place. Linux is compatible with both as is Windows but the software itself still cares. A compatibility layer is required to emulate. Cross compatibility can be had this way but at a cost that can be huge. Super powerful ARM chips might be the answer. Only time will tell.

And Microsoft's SQ lineup of processors are actually based on Snapdragon 8cx so at least Microsoft could do such thing. Yet they don't.
