Canelo Alvarez: De La Hoya just worries about drinking

World champion boxer Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez discusses his tumultuous departure from Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, including De La Hoya’s lack of involvement, the promotion company’s lack of loyalty and its general focus on what’s best for the company, not what’s best for its boxers.
After suing both Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN in September 2020, Canelo is now enjoying the freedom that comes with his free agency.

  • I got a different level of respect for Canelo after seeing this. He almost never lets you get a glimpse into who he truly is. In this interview, you learn a lot about who he is as a man.

    • If you didn't know this side of Canelo, then you must have not been following for years. He's clearly stated multiple times that he's a loyal person. When he lost to Mayweather they wanted him to fire his trainers but he said "no". He a loyal guy 100%

    • @@S33Estate - are you sure he’s 100% loyal? You know that it was him and Oscar that didn’t want to fight Floyd at catch weight. You know who agreed to it? Chepo. You do know it was Canelo team that were butchers in Mexico and still managed to get Canelo testing positive for clen, right? You know who paid the few million difference to make that rematch happen? Oscar. Canelo is getting paid more because he’s fighting way more. He’s catching up because he got suspended and didn’t fight for a full year and also didn’t fight during COVID. With the amount of money he spends, it doesn’t matter how much he makes. Once you make a certain amount in boxing, you gotta take care of yourself a little. Oscar put him in the position no matter what to get those famous Mexican holidays. Oscar defended Canelo to the extreme because it was Canelo Team that stayed quiet with the clen situation. Oscar made him one of the highest paid athletes in the world. And he wants to bring up the lawsuit? Please bro. Oscar helped you more than his trainers did.

    • @@808MarveL - actually, they did. The real issues were with Oscar and Reynosos, not Canelo. Canelo used to blow up in weight big time in between fights so he always struggled to make 154. That’s why rt after Floyd, he would fight at 155 up until Chavez Jr. that’s like 7 fights later! When he fought Lara, it wasn’t even for Lara’s title. Oscar would tell Chepo and Eddy to watch after Canelo and they wouldn’t. But Oscar still supported and promoted the hell out of Canelo.

    • I like to joke that Canelo Alvarez is my cousin b/c my stepdad's last name is Alvarez :-) Owen Davis and John Kavanagh, I hear y'all. I did not see the Triller event that occurred a couple of weekends ago. But, I saw KZhead clips of it. I loved Oscar De La Hoya as a boxer, I like Snoop Dogg's music and I respect Al Bernstein as a boxing analyst b/c I believe Bernstein has a solid eye and shrewd insight. Yet, I'm still trying to figure out what Triller contributes that is constructive or substantial. So far, I'm not finding any answers. Some people thought De La Hoya's commentary was funny. I felt bad for him, though. Because, imo, it seemed people laughed at him and not with him. There is a difference. I hope De La Hoya makes wise choices in the future. Because if he is behaving like that, it makes me wonder how seriously he is taking his apparent comeback.

Mayweather Promotions has always been a registered corporation and Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO, files his taxes as CEO of Mayweather Promotions. As if global networks would allow boxers to fight under an unregistered logo / company. If that was the case, all of Tanks fights would be null and void and he wouldn't be receiving residual payments from Mayweather Promotion. As stated on Business Insider - "Mayweather Promotions, LLC is a boxing promotional firm founded in 2007 by five-division world and twelve-time world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr., after exercising a provision in his contract with Bob Arum and Top Rank that allowed him to become a free agent for the price of $750,000."

The worst part is when the agents hook them up with drugs and women so they can feel like they’re living the life, but in the end they don’t own anything. Everything of value, the cars, houses, everything is under the agents name and when you have no more money coming in and you have to sell the last thing you own, even then the agent wants a commission.

Nosotros hemos tenido una sequía amplia de boxeadores de categoría por un buen tiempo, quizás en un futuro cercano tendremos un boxeador que le pueda ganar a Canelo, ojalá y sea temprano, todo es posible.

Quick story i experienced few years ago at a gym i was working at, had a kid ready for pro levels really talented and the owner whom i knew for 10+ yrs knew as well.... To the point: owner says hey hes ready and I...sorry we will make money off of him, you'll get your 3% and I'll take my 90 as promoter and manager." I caught him and asked what the fuck did he mean and i wasnt ok with it, we end up talking to the kid i trained and the owner switches his story up. The supposed contract was said to have 90% of purse be given to the owner because of reasons. Both kid and i left the gym, sent the kid into better hands. But promoters are shady as fuck.

    • Yeah Oscar as a fighter was pretty great and him leaving Top Rank to create his own promotion paved the way for other fighters. But, Oscar as a promoter or whatever he does now is completely different. He clearly has fallen off. He should be glad Canelo didn't leave him back when Schaefer left and took all those fighters to Al Haymon and PBC.
