    • What don’t you want? If it’s on same land or within a couple of hundreds yards? We’ve knocked down and rebuilt stands at SJP before… it’s the location that makes it unique in heart of city, if we can stay there then I don’t know what people are attached to? The stands are a 90s relic and they will go at some point.

    • @@michaelmckie9164 Yeah I agree, the location is part of what makes St James’ unique. Moving it by a hundred yards into leazes park doesn’t make a difference to its location, you’re right. But the atmosphere of st. James’ is the other part of what makes it unique, and this is determined by where people sit. Yeah, everyone at the ground sings, but the songs are usually always started in specific sections of the ground like the strawberry corner. The strawberry corner is something which has been slowly, naturally created over a period of tens of years, and it’s for this reason they can’t be replicated in new grounds, at least not immediately. Uprooting sections like the strawberry corner will have a domino effect on the atmosphere of any newly constructed ground, and this is partly what worries me. Look at West Ham and their new(ish) London stadium, they’re a perfect example of this.

  • Redevelop to get an extra 8000 to 13000 capacity? Not great or visionary really. We could fill SJP currently with an extra 30000. So developing the only stand we can (Gallowgate End) leaving us with a lopsided ground (3 large sides instead of current 2) with the diddy east stand - unable to develop thanks to grade 1 Leazes Terrace. Don’t forget, we don’t even own the current SJP land (we rent it off the council). If the report is true then - Total wasted opportunity to build a world class 80000 Wembley of the North. Watching SJP ‘develop’ since 1975, it’s been a series of ‘compromises’. If you believe the latest news, (if true), SJP will be heading for another compromise thanks to constraints.

  • I don't see how they create more than 60k. Maybe if they add a bit to the Leazes and Milburn... Something like a semi circular addition and a complete roof replacement on those 2 stands, then the Gallowgate to mirror the Leazes, you might get more that way, if it's possible to build like that. So those 3 stands could resemble the Tottenham stadium in some respect. But if they simply make the Gallowgate the same height as those 2 stands, we're looking at around 60-62k in my opinion. And I'm fine with that. When the owners are looking at improving the stadium, I think that primarily means the facilities. I think we see a huge upgrade to the existing stands, the concourses, the lounges, and bars, with the expectation that fans will spend more time eating/drinking at the stadium before games. That sort of thing is a huge improvement on income. New facilities in the existing stands can be introduced now, even with the Stacks there, and I think that will be the first development. Regarding the Gallowgate, I can see a fan area for watching games becoming a permanent fixture, where the Stacks is being built now but integrated into a new stand; a huge open expanse for watching games and hosting events. New bars, lounges, and eateries in every stand, all around the stadium, to extend the length of the match day experience at the stadium, and to make St. James' more suitable for and attractive to events, concerts, international games, and other sports'... this is where the money is for the club. They can make way more money doing this than shoving as many seats as possible into the stadium. At the same time, they placate the fans by not moving our home, expanding the stadium to its maximum for where we are, and modernising the place. This is the aim imo. A 60-62k events hub that happens to be mint for eating, drinking, watching footy, and keeps all us sentimental fans happy.

Add, Leazes terrace grade one listed of course is now owned by another Saudi group, and are mostly lettings apartments, and imo they won't block the PIF regarding building works, although the city council will demand consideration regarding light, but the best architects in the world will be on the case. For me it has to be 65,000 at least, but i think it will be wonderful. Could it be ready for Euro 2028, well, where's there's a will there's a way. . HWTL.

Even when it is erected, it came be made from some sort of see through 'glass' material to allow the light through as best as possible during games. I don't think the listed buildings are the main problem. The main problem is that stupid rule where sunlight needs to hit grade 1 listed buildings. Crazy. However, my preference was a new stadium. To all the people crying about wanting to stay at SJP- We've knocked down ALL stands at one point in the past and replaced them. Plus, how many times has the pitch been re-layed!?? There is literally nothing left of the original ground anyway so what difference does a new stadium make that will probably only be a matter of a few hundred yards away from SJP??

Just because there is a big waiting list that doesn't mean you should add 20,000 more seats. They did a study so they're probably taking into account how likely things are to be approved, location, the weight it would put on traffic flow and infrastructure, etc.

    • There is land outside the city but the public transport infrastructure doesn't exist. The culture of going to the match and being in the Toon before and after the match is just as, if not more than, important as the game. Anywhere outside of the city wouldn't work.

    • @@thomaspagh8988 So you think the whole 100+ year culture of going to the match should be dumped for a handful of tourists who'll piss off and follow some other club when they're tired of NUFC ? How would you accommodate the amount of car parking that you suggest? You're either not from Newcastle or don't have a clue about what the match day experience is if you are.

  • I don’t care what any of you lot think, keep SJP. You think the future is a heartless new stadium somewhere in Gateshead or wherever, or squatting on the edge of the town moor? Newcastle has already had too much of its architecture and heritage vandalised, so develop what we already have and don’t be so hasty to chuck the location and the heritage away. Keep SJP!

    • Very well said.....I'm all for keeping the heritage of our great club exactly where it has been all these years. The emotions inside SJP will be biblical when we finally win something, and I want that to be there not some spanking new trendy stadium

  • one lousey season and the fans will be staying away in droves as they did with Ashley. One thing is for sure it will be the down trodden "poor" fans that pay for all this and the last of the old timers will be forced out of our seats. These owners fill me with dred with their talk of billions when one of the biggest "food banks" is less than a mile away from the ground.
