  • Honestly, the setup (1995, 1996) is just as important, if not moreso, as the coverage of the rivalry and Fight Night itself. My criticism is roughly the same as Scotty, insofar as a lack of discussion of what happened after Fight Night. Two hours of discussing the rivalry is nice and all, but this should've gone on for another hour. There's very little talk of post-rivalry days. I enjoy documentaries, so I feel like they built this all up, spent a lot of time setting up for 26 March 1997, then was all "oh... we've spent all this time building up, so let's splash words on the screen to wrap this up". That ending felt cheap. It was good, and I enjoyed it, but I would've preferred more coverage of the post-Fight Night years. If you're going to do a documentary of the rivalry, do the entire rivalry. I felt like they dropped the ball on that part.

  • Yea I was super upset that it was basically saying the red wings needed to grow a pair. But never said anything to defend the wings. But I love how In toward end they kinda vindicated the wings and brought Vladdy out to interview him. I watched it live and it warmed my heart it made me tear up fs thank you guys Sm for doing this it’s like my fav channel.

  • Hey, guys. Avs fan here. Your show popped in my suggestions because I have been watching a lot of "Locked On" Avs and Lightning during the final. When I saw this was about the rivalry, I couldn't resist. I haven't watched the doc yet, but here is your Avs fan perspective of the rivalry: 1. In the height of the rivalry, I recognized that the Lemieux hit on Draper was dirty, but was it really that bad? Move on! The Wings are just sore losers who got beat in the Conference Final in '96 after a historically good season. My views have evolved since then, so please read on. 2. The 7-0 spanking you handed us in game 7 of the '02 WCF was, in hindsight, really the end of it. Sure, the teams and the fans will always have some animosity, but we never met again in the playoffs and the key guys started retiring shortly after. It just wasn't the same. It felt manufactured rather than organic. 3. To my above point, even though the rivalry is over, I still enjoy watching the Wings struggle. I'm sure you all got a good laugh during the Avs 48 point season. No worries. 4. I am a Colorado native. Never had a team to cheer for until the Nordiques relocated. That rivalry is what brought me into hockey. Those classic Avs/Wings games are still the best hockey I have ever seen. So much skill and anger and respect on both sides. Each team knowing that they'd likely have to beat the other on the way to the Stanley Cup made every game so important. 6. Looking back, the hit that kicked the whole thing off was dirty and cheap and deserved a much longer suspension. But it triggered some of the best hockey in history and I feel privileged for having witnessed it. Hopefully we'll meet you guys in the Stanley Cup Final in a few years and renew the rivalry! Can you imagine that? With Sakic and Yzerman as the GMs? I know those guys have a ton of respect for each other, but I think they would love to beat each other, too! Good show! Go Avs!

    • One thing I forgot to mention. Certain players transcend things like "rivalry." No matter the situation, no matter the stakes, they play the game the right way: hard, clean, and with respect. Nick Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman are two of those guys. Class acts all the way and 2 of the best players to ever lace 'em up.

    • You said they didn’t meet in the playoffs again after 2002. They met in 2008

    • Also to Answer your question about whether the hit on Draper was that bad, it was. He literally had to eat and drink from a straw for weeks after that and couldn’t even talk

    • @@hockeyboy379 oh yeah. I forgot about that one. Again, though, by that time most of the key guys had moved on. It certainly wasn't as heated anymore. I stand by my original assertion that the '02 series really marked the end of it. Of course that is with the benefit of hindsight. I certainly didn't know that at the time.

  • Anyone know where to get the full documentary, I started watching it and now I can find it. Avs fan here too. I grew up with this rivalry. Both teams were amazing. For years the cup went through these two teams. It would have been a great rivalry without the bloodshed.

  • No interest, I lack the trust to have ESPN tell it squarely. I’ve seen the promos where Avs freaked out over Slava in game 2 of ‘96. They had been running us all game 1. And they carried water for 💩💼 Bettman. Colorado was the new team who the league NEEDED to succeed. And we were still the team with “the Russians”. F ESPN.
