The Detroit Red Wings need to get better this off-season. But with a full roster and cap-space that is shrinking, they need to make room. Who are the leadining candidates for that? Justin Holl? Olli Maatta? Jeff Petry? Also, The point system kinda sucks, we'll chat about it. #LGRW

Just to add, Marc Staal was not retained at 50%. The whole $5.7 million contract was taken with a second round pack. 🎉
Thank you, thats on me for misremembering and not double checking
@@LockedOnRedWings no problem! I’m a big fan of trades and contract to stay on top of it. Keep up the good work boys!
Right dmen are always in demand and some gm will think they can work with holl. He’d easily find a taker imo at 50% retention no need to add assets to move . Make copp available at 3-3.5 and ship him off as well
Holl you're absolutely right. As for Copp i used to agree but not after this season. He's overpaid a little yes but his play has been fine for the most part this year. He's not a point producer like his contract would suggest but he does have value
@@patrickgaughan1199 copp can have value ... elsewhere lol I’d much rather have kasper as 3c than copp and gain 2 mill + space . Think someone grabs him at 3-3.5 ... 5,65 is ridiculous
@@socialmediag5485 Kasper isn't an upgrade.
3 - 2 - 1 should be tried out, b/c it doesn't make sense if a team that has more wins doesn't make the playoffs over a team with less wins. That way, a team that actually has more wins, whether during regulation or in overtime, is rewarded for winning. Now, a team has more regulation wins than a team who has won during OT, the team with the more regulation wins should qualify over the team with wins during OT. Although the Wings played extremely poorly in March and deserved to not make the playoffs based on the current point system for reg wins, reg losses, OT wins, and OT losses, they got robbed by a team that had less wins than them. Once a team is in the playoffs, the playoffs will determine, based on a 5 or 7 game series, who advances to the next level. Caps, Pens, and possibly the Isles should have not even competed in the last few weeks for a spot in the playoffs based on their wins/losses ratio.
The reality is that the caps pens and islanders still competing down to the last game is the exact reason the system will stay the way it is. Keeping the league close down to the last games of the season drives up narratives and viewership for the league.
Get rid of points for losses, will make the games in mid season more competitive, and get rid of teams like the Islanders who have one superstar and a bunch of hasbeens getting in. They want to stick with the rw as the tiebreaker then that's fine with me as long as teams don't get points for losing. You have 3v3 and a shootout to reduce the amount of injuries as is, just stupid logic to give teams points for losing and punish teams for winning in o.t.
Hey guys
I almost feel like you'd have to give something up for someone taking Holl. Like Holl and a 3rd for a 7th. Lol
For the points system, it is only logical to administer a 3pt system. 3 for w in regulation, and 2 for w in ot, with 1 for the ot loss. That being said, what is the goal of the NHL? Is it to create a perfectly representative point system, so that the best teams are obvious and make it to the playoffs? OR is it to artificially create parity? I would argue it is the latter, and that is why we haven't seen a 3pt system. The unfortunate symptom of the artificial 2 pt system that is currently employed, is that it favors teams who focus on defense and unexciting hockey. It is better to keep games low scoring, because that leads to more OT opportunities which means more points over time.
So...basically I think two lines are set at forward and 4 defensemen are more or less locked: Cat-Larkin-Raymond (1st line) Rasmussen-Copp-Fisher (resigns) (3rd line) Seider-Walmann Edvinnson-Chiarot Other than that...Compher, Veleno and Petry, possibly Maata are all coming back resigning Kane would be great, possibly keeping Peron? Ghost is likely gone. Hopefully either Ed or Mo can pick up most of the PP minutes. Now, ideally (how this would work with the cap is a different question). 2nd line Kane-Compher?-Bergren 4th line Mazur-Veleno-Kasper And probably third pairing of Petry-Maata? Or perhaps Ed and Petry had some chemistry, so swap Chiarot and Petry? If another of the kids is ready to come up, one of the three is replaceable. If by chance one of the young centers (Marco?) could keep up with Kane that would be amazing. Because 2nd line center really is the biggest need by far. And I am intrigued by the idea of another 2 kids and a goat line (Kane-Kasper-Bergren/Mazur). I actually like the idea of Mazur on that line if he is ready. Now the real questions is will this be good enough? And I think the answer here is, no idea, but they would be playing 4/5 rookies? This could either really good or really really bad. And of course, at some point those kids have to crack the lineup. Ed and Burgers are over ripe. Goalies? Husso/Lyon come back and split duties. - this however should be the second priority after figuring out the 2C situation. So...let see. Cat-Larkin-Raymond Kane/Mazur-Compher/Kasper-Mazur/Bergren Rasmussen-Copp-Fisher Veleno-Mazur/Kasper/Fabri/Soderblom...Also, slot DP here if he is still with the team next season. Walman-Seider Edvinson-Petry Chiarot-Johansson Maata Husso/Lyon (pretty much half/half split) I don't know...something like this and hoping the kids become what we hope for them to become. Dealing some pieces for a 2C (or getting rid of some for a FA acquisition) should be an idea.
Ed and Johnasson I think is more likely since they play together in GR. Granted, if they are caved in at the NHL level, then I could see it swap to that. Would prefer if Petry can just slot down to that third pair regularly though.
I really don't think Petry is moving.
I think a win is a win, and if you think about it, isn't an o.t. not a shootout win more indicative of a team demonstrating it's ability to win in crucial moments? If they want to argue about the 3 on 3 being an inaccurate representation of a teams ability to win then just eliminate the 3 on 3 and go back to 5 on 5. To negate overtime wins in deciding what team goes to the playoffs is ridiculous, especially when you have the 7 and 8 seed teams being a combined minus 40 and one if not both of those teams being swept in the first round.
My opinion is that the simplest fix is the tie breaker. First tie breaker being total wins, if that’s a tie, then regulation/OT wins, then idk, goal differential? But, im ultimately in favor of a point system upgrade in conjunction with the tie breakers being amended.
I been watching hockey my whole life and honestly I thought all this time it was total wins first then regulation if total wins was a tie . Seems odd to me to have a team tied in points and the one with less total wins make the cut .
@@williammontroy9024 I think the tie breaker was amended recently. This is me recalling, not researching, so I could be wrong
If you do the count, the points wouldn’t be far different doing 3-2-1.
You could also trade holl and a 3rd for a 4th. That gives the team you're trading with incentive, while also not retaining salary, you also maybe have less of a pool to pick from in the 4th, but you're not just giving away a pic for nothing
Bad tine for Arizona to move and get a real owner - that was always a great dumping ground
Detroit really only needs a 2c and maybe 2 rh def. Problem will be finding them. I would say goaltender. But with that husso contract it would be tough.
I agree with 2 centers if Kane goes (probably gone), we have prospects in GR like Kasper or Lombardi that might be able to fill one of those. Do we really need 2 RHD? I think we could get by with adding one to replace Petry (Pulock or DeMelo?) to play next to Edvinsson and then leave Gost and Wallman on the third line and bring up someone like Johansson from GR as a rotational piece.
@@jeffreyparker2783 I said 2. Because ghost bear might have priced himself out. It’s kinda iffy he returns. If petry goes then there really isn’t many rh def left.
@@jackconrad2667 So SY tries to bring Gost back but if not DeMelo and Pulock are both RHD's. DeMelo's contract is up this year and Pulock's is up in 2025. Also, Petry needs to go.
@@jeffreyparker2783 all for either one instead of petry.
If you have to retain 50% and would give up a pick then buy out is probably better
Just make each game worth 3 points. Reg win = 3 / Reg loss = 0 OT win = 2 / OT loss = 1
Could we Stevie Y pull DeMelo out of Winnipeg and Duchene out of Dallas to replace Petry/Holl and Reimer?
😂can’t compare holl to Marc staal trade ffs , steal had a 5.5 hit and holl at 50% is 1,7 mill . Come on
Some games worth 3 points, others worth 2 points, never made sense. 2 pts for a win in reg or OT, if OT expires, game is a tie, 1 pt for both, scrap the shootout.
Nobody is taking jeff petry lmao . Throw him in the buyout dumpster and be rid of him . Much rather have Albert johansson in his spot . Time to take out the trash this summer
I think what they said is true. Petry value is in his contract. If Detroit does salary retained then absolutely they could move him. Wouldn’t mind Johansson taking that spot. But it’s so hard to tell if he is ready for the nhl without actually playing him in the nhl.
We could add a DeMelo or a Puloski instead to replace Petry and let Johansson serve as the Holl rotational piece.
@@jackconrad2667 petry has zero value he’s an old man who’s nhl career is about to end . If we’re retaining salary I’d rather it go to copp and holl. Keep a spot open incase . Petry’s 2nd year buyout is peanuts if I recall . Basically going younger and switching him up with johansson which I’d do in a heartbeat
@@jeffreyparker2783 I’d target Matt roy if it’s not too expensive
@@socialmediag5485 I was saying we trade or waive both regardless of salary concerns. Trade Maata as well. Bring up Johansson and Trade for a top 50 established RHD like DeMelo or Puloski. Try and keep Gost. Then we resign Mo, keep Edvinsson on the roster along with Chairot and Wallman which gives us 7.
Can someone explain why Justin Holl didn’t play? I’ve looked everywhere and couldn’t find a reason why
He was a black Holl.... I'll see myself out don't worry.
Because he wasn't very good
Because Lalonde thought a career minus 127 petry was better than Holl who's a career +66
Let’s think. With how bad Detroit was defensively holl couldnt even make the roster. I would need to go back and watch videos to see myself. I barely saw him play. Given the stats I bet anything he just let the opposing team fly by him. I mean every one is calling for buyout or move him. Even more so then Petry
One of many questionable roster decisions.
Edaby eidaby odiby this ain't where Petry spoda be !
Justin is a great defensive defensemen
Husso is who is going to cost us to move, which is funny considering the goalie market. Husso is better off getting a fresh start elsewhere at this point in his career. I think mgmt would be better off to run Reimer, Lyon, and possibly picking up someone else. Holl, Maatta, and Chiarot should be able to be moved while gaining assets - whether that's roster space, picks, or part of a bigger deal. Petry ain't going anywhere is my part of my take. I don't think Ghost will come back, but who knows. Kane would be awesome to get back. Fischer was a great add on the bottom six. Fabbri could be moved. Perron should be signed for another year or two as the first precedent imo. The biggest mistake would be to buy anyone out or retain salary on any transactions at this point in time as I think it would be better to give picks of equitable value salary-wise if that's required to make space.
Way to many moves that you talking about. Cant do all that nor even should
@@fredhenrick I'm not suggesting anything other than what I see as a possibility of being "obvious" moves from my opinion.
Give holl away
They are incentivizing regulation wins and points.
Wings should grab Marner. Maybe package burger, two picks, and an AHL depth move? We would need Toronto to retain but who knows anything can happen.
Lmaooo
They already have too many soft light in the loafers on the roster
Repeat, repeat, repeat! let me repeat, you guys beat all the dead horses to death. You could cut your air time by 66% and still transmit the same amount of information. Only my hunger for Wings news motivates me to watch you sometimes. Do I need to repeat?
Buyout Petry
Trade Justin Holl? For what? A pack of smokes? Holl shouldn't have been signed in the first place. I thought Yzerman knew how to judge talent. Not in this case.
I fully support the NHL trying a new point system for at least 3yrs. 3 for RW win, 2 for OT win, 1 for OT loss
I know that the Islanders and the Capitals had negative +/- team stats this year and made the playoffs but traditionally playoff teams have positive team +/- stats. Loosing Ghost, Kane, Perron, Sprong and Rabbri would shed a combined minus 51 goals from the roster. Loosing these players would result in less goal production next season but would almost guarantee a playoff position. This should be n easy decision for Yzerman.
The talk on here about Steve making trades or signing free agents scares me. Past results show it isn't his strong point. Next year, it's unlikely the Wings will improve as they will be taking up more guys from GR. Give Steve another 3 to 4 years, and we will make the playoffs. Of course, by that time, Larkin's window will be closing, and they will be trying to move on from Cat.
1000% Robby Fabbri needs to take a hike. Enough is enough the youth movement is now . Kasper, soderblom, mazur,Berggren all in contention for spots as well as free agency/trade . Yzerman needs to get rid of a lot of guys
I don’t think fabbri needs to take a hike. Now that being said. If a cheaper upgrade at that position is available I’m all for it. Kasper soderblom and Mazur probably are in the ahl for one more season. I wouldn’t mind giving them a shot. But reality is they won’t be ready. Berggren is ready tho.
@@jackconrad2667 how many seasons in the ahl do these guys need? They’re like 23 minus kasper who’s already played with men for 3 seasons . Enough already , just delaying the inevitable where we’ll have 4-5 rookies in a single season cause we keep delaying them. Berggren and edvinsson should have been up the whole season Fabbri is gone at season’s end regardless. He’s not part of the future plans. 70-80 of the current roster won’t be here in 2-3 years. It’s time
Knowing how Yzerman operates he will want to keep all or most of those guys in GR for at least another year because he loves letting prospects marinate for a really long time
@@OFDProductions he needs to let go of that thinking cause it just delays everything and leads to horrendous holl, copp type contracts . Most of these kids are 23 years old . It’s more than time
@@socialmediag5485I agree, that’s been my biggest criticism of the Yzerplan so far is that he leaves the kids in the AHL too long. Berggren was drafted 6 years ago, there’s absolutely no reason he should still be in GR
I would argue that Petry's contract isn't nearly as movable as one might think. He has a NMC, after all. In a perfect world, he simply retires. What we need to do is find out if there's any team out there who wants Holl, and find out what it'll take to sweeten the pot enough to get a team to take him. Edit: The "loser point" has been a part of the NHL since 1921, so I sincerely doubt it's going anywhere. The best you can hope for is a 3-2-1 setup.
It seems odd to me that most hockey players play left-handed when most of them are right-handed naturally. It’s not that way in other sports. I need to understand this.
The dominant hand is towards the top of the stick for stick handling
my god you are repeating again
Stupid talk about what they would do if they were the generak manager.NEWSFLASH.You two will never become an NHL general manager!
i rather trade a 1st and get rid of the entire holl contract
Most likely will need that first if they want a true 2c or strong rh def.
Trading the 1st to unload the Holl contract would be totally moronic, He'd only cost us $4,5,00,000 on a 4 year buyout. Still much less then what we;d be paying him on his last 2 years at $3,400,000 per.
You guys need to stop simping for Yzerman on here. Been 5 years and no playoffs. In a real job in a year if you weren't successful you'd be gone. I get sports is different but this year should have been playoffs. It's been long enough to start criticizing him and also his hire at coach who clearly cost the wings a playoff spot with his inability to motivate the team night in and night out. No consistent effort. Yzerman looking flabbergasted people are questioning Lalonde really annoyed me. Also his contracts- Copp was clearly overpaid, Debrincat was clearly overpaid I don't see him as a 40 goal scorer although he has some good playmaking ability and then Holl and Petry which neither made sense.
You must not remember how bad the roster and contracts were when Yzerman took over. It took 2 seasons just to get to ground zero. Rasmussen, veleno and zadina were our best prospects. They're all now bottom six players. Yzerman knew, and said from the beginning that this would take years if we're going to do it right. There's no point in going for broke just to make a weak playoff run.
Everyone knows how bad it was but it's still been 5 years. I know you got your talking points down but that doesn't change the fact that his plan is off course and there was a big missed opportunity this year to make the playoffs. I don't really feel any urgency with this team and his postseason presser is concerning esp when he admitted how nervous he was. I thought he was supposed to have all the answers?
Locked On Red Wings, I love this! Can we be friends?
