  • Since you didn't find any metal particles in the filter of the El Camino you should check the pressed in rocker arm studs. More than likely that's your culprit. They often pull out of the heads. Pull the valve cover and lay a straight edge across the top of them and you can tell which ones have backed out.

  • As someone that does a bit of powder coating I can assure you that cast iron absorbs oil. I don’t know if it would be enough to ruin brake linings as it’s not very much but I’ve had issues of oil weeping out of the cast iron when heated in the oven to cure the powder coat which of course means redoing the job. It’s amazing the number of metals that will do this like zinc and pot metal so now I take precautions but I’ve certainly cleaned oil off brake drums and used them successfully and I’ve even boiled brake linings to get brake fluid out of them. Both of these methods are frowned upon but both worked for a young bloke with no money 40 years ago. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺 ps, I love Gus😘

  • Great video, and a smart trick I learned from a friend and mechanic. When you are working on the brakes hydrolics, depress the brakepedal and lock it in place before you start. That way you block the master cylinder whitch will let no fluid thru the brakelines. There"ll be next to no spilled brakefluid on the ground. Works great:)

Most of the little I know about working on cars and trucks comes from my Dad, who was a vehicle tech in the Canadian Armed Forces for the earlier part of his 36-year career. Thank you for sharing yet another video, I actually drove Wreckers on the side in Texas. My son-in-law was so swamped down at the time he took time to show me the ins and outs and get me licensed and then on the weekends I got paid to pick up wrecked vehicles and breakdowns. So you know it's fun watching you work on that old 30, my projects are coming along slowly but surely. I posted a couple of crappy videos as I don't own a computer and really can't edit much on the phone but I do the best I can. • Speaking of "coating everything" my favorite way to prevent rust is to go to a self serve car wash, set the dial to "wax", and spay wax the entire underside, much of the trunk interior, and most of the engine bay. Automatic car washes have "corrosion inhibiting undercarriage rinse", which is fine between waxings, but the spray wax is better. Also, silicone tire shine seems to protect mufflers and exhaust pipes that may get too hot for the spray wax to stay.

  • I’ve been watching your channel for a little now and I absolutely love it!! It’s given me the gumption to save up for my own project car. Also, you may not care about this but I’m from PA too, so it was just cool to hear you’re from here as well. Hope all is well!
