They are suppose to back any Nikon camera so long as they are the ambassadors…..however Z9 is indeed a great offering from Nikon and it well stem the exodus from Nikon to Sony more due to herd mentality rather than merit …

Please do a Z9 video going over all the menu options in the detail like you did for the menu options you showed in this video. I'm especially interested in seeing my details about reprogramming the control buttons and what options are available for each of the buttons.

Great and informative video. Is it possible to add via firmware Exposure Delay Mode as we do in the Z6 and Z7 bodies and D850 and D810 and D750 DSLR bodies? I know there are ways to work around with Self Timer, SnapBridge, etc. However, nothing is as good and convenient (especially out in the field for long exposures on a tripod), as Exposure Delay Mode. This would be a very big and welcome addition.
What is the decompression time for the new compression algorithms ?

Curious if the sync speed of a shutterless camera is based entirely on the readout speed, and is the readout speed tied to the megapixel count?

Hi Paul, you can tether to a computer either wirelessly (using the built-in WiFi), wired with a USB C cable, or wired using an ethernet cable.
Can you please comment on Nikon's lack of RAW file format from multiple exposures from early Z models, and how it is implemented on Z9?

There is a Flicker Reduction option but that does not deal with banding per se. There is no option like you're asking for but in the limited testing I have done, the sensor's scan rate is fast enough that I have not encountered banding. The Z 9's e-shutter should behave exactly like a mechanical shutter, which means to say that banding under most scenarios should not occur. I am still trying the Z 9 in more difficult scenarios, but so far it's working really well in areas that previous mirrorless cameras have had issues.
@@chrisogonek4304 - I can't remember where I read that this will be addressed in a future firmware in a similar manner to how Sony have in their A1 electronic shutter mode by syncing the shutter speed. If this proves to be an issue, it will get sorted by Nikon by some means or another.
Good Morning Chris, great reviews that I have seen via Nikon Canada (many many thanks) Chris, I have a question about the shutter/sensor protection in conjunction with the new or old FTZ adapter, does the sensor protector also work when changing current DSLR lenses when using the FTZ adapter? Hi John, yes it does. Anytime you turn the Z 9 off (if you have the Sensor Shield feature activated), the Shield will close. It doesn't matter if you have the FTZ I, FTZ II or you're using native NIKKOR Z glass.

13:00 we heard of 16-bit raws possibly coming. Any info about them?
With the release of the Z9 with its fantastic video feature set; 4K oversampling, 8K present and firmware 12-bit raw features, I just ordered one and traded in 4 Sony bodies and several lenses, and now plan to be back in the Nikon ecosystem which I used to be in my studio days in the 1990s. However, one of the things which I HATED about the Sony's I was using was their open, dust magnet, very hard to clean, sensors. That's why I had 4 bodies, each with a different lens which never came off. One HUGE feature which influenced me to order a Z9 was the sensor shield. In this film, I was somewhat concerned when you said that once the shield is retracted that any dust on it goes right on the sensor. If that is indeed the case, how effective is the camera's sensor cleaning function at shaking it off? Does your electro-conductive coating work well to shake the dust off? Does the shield in any way repel or make it easy to blow dust off it with a simple blower or will dust stick to the shield like glue no matter how much it's blown? I'm primarily a film maker and I don't think most still photographers realize how problematic sensor dust can be in video as opposed to stills. In stills, it is very easy to correct with simple tools in most editing programs. In video, a couple of specks can be much more problematic and require substantial time and effort in post to correct. It is a very big deal!!
Hi Barry, sorry to alarm you but I like to be very open with the information I provide on NikonTV and like to point out that ONLY having a mechanical shutter close (which is what the competitor models do), or using the new Sensor Shield by itself will not completely solve a dust issue. That's why we not only have a sensor cleaning function, but that new electro-conductive coating which will help prevent any dust from adhering to the sensor in the first place.
Thanks Chris. It should definitely be a step up from what I've experienced in the past. I'm wondering if I could prevail on you to try an experiment. Can you pull the lens off a Z9 body with the sensor shield engaged and then use a blower to see if it's able to blow the dust off it or if any still wants to stick? My past experience with Sony sensors and various different lenses, is that the blowers won't get it all no matter how hard you try. So, just wondering how your shield will respond. It would be useful information, so I know what to reasonably expect. Thanks!
@@Tarnway0412 In my time with the camera, I've used the blower multiple times if needed, and was able to easily get rid of dust :)
Thanks. That's great to hear! My plan would be to try and blow as much as possible off the shield so it never makes it to the sensor. Also, would be great if the sensor cleaning function also works well.
Question: In Z7II there is setting d9 - "Apply settings to live view", which selects between exposure preview and "OVF" like live view. How and where do you set similar function in Z9?
It is renamed in the Z 9 but the functionality is the same. It is found under D8 now and you have to select 'Show effects of settings' under the View Mode menu option

I have the first-gen z6; an incredibly well-designed but ridiculously underrated camera for first-gen; love everything about it. I hope some of the z9 tech will leak into the third-gen z6 and 7 series.
Totally agreed with how underrated it is, especially with us just releasing new firmware that improves the AF even more!
Q. Will AF be available in 8k 60 raw?
Hello, First thing I love the look of the Z9 so big thanks to Nikon. But I shoot with both my Nikons at D850's and Z7ii as well I use my Hasselblad which uses 16 BIT colour so when you say there is little difference between 12 bit and 14 bit, there is. Yes the file size is smaller with 12 bit. But why when you are spending £5300 in the UK for an amazing camera reduce the quality on the image file. Yes you could just shot jpg's, and they are Nikon jpg so they are very good. Great to see some of the new menu items with a good explanation. Thanks.
Hi John, theoretically there is a very big difference between 12 and 14-bit, but in practical use it gets quite small. There are a lot of tests online that discuss this topic, but in my own testing, if I am not shooting at the base ISO value, there is literally no difference between 12 and 14-bit. And even at base ISO, the difference is minimal (unless you are heavily, heavily editing the colours and tones of the image). All that being said though, the Z 9 is only ever providing 14-bit RAW images, so Nikon hasn't reduced the quality at all, we've done the opposite. If you choose the Lossless compressed option then you get the same RAW file type that you're used to with your D850/Z 7II, but if you use one of the new High Efficiency modes, then the quality is still there but you now save on file size.

This is a nice explainer. (Kudos also to the framing Chris uses for this talks - it's always nice to have those lenses in the foreground.) My question is: If we are limited to 20 fps RAW, why isn't it faster when using high efficiency? What about crops? Would we have been able to do faster RAW fps if we had an option for lower resolution shooting? Seems like opening up those possible tradeoffs could have been good for users. A future firmware update?

While the Z 9 can shoot at 20fps in any of the RAW modes, we have provided different options for shooters who want even faster frame rates: - 30fps - JPEG only at full resolution - 120fps - JPEG only w/ 11MP resolution
I had a similar thought/question. I hate comparison, but the fact that the other 2 offerings from Sony and Canon can shoot more frames they also have buffering issues regardless on card type and speed. From what I can see from Ricci and others, the Z9 buffer can go to at least 1000 frames before slowing down with the correct cards. This is the true trade off IMO, so I think the likelihood of missing the "shot" is less likely with a camera that can go 20 FPS at 1000 frames buffer. So I ordered the best cards when I ordered my Z9. I hope that makes sense.
@@reneefariasphoto40 That's a good point. But I'm still wondering whether there's a technical reason that the Z9 can't shoot RAW faster if we reduce file quality even further. Most people will be happy with 20fps raw with an insane buffer or 30fps jpeg, I'm sure. But what about those that would want faster framerates but also the control over color and exposure you get from RAW? Is this a technical restriction?
@@gyozakeynsianism Totally makes sense and you are on point. Something I saw in a video and it's killing me that I can't seem to recall which video, is that the Z9 will do 20 FPS with ALL lenses accurately. Which means it stays in focus with adapted lenses (F mount) as well as S line at 20FPS raw. Not sure if that would be a tech reason why but it would make sense. I hope I can fine that dang video some day. UGH soo many videos... LOL

Thanks for a clear & great video. Stupid question here. Why is the Z series referred to as ZEN not Z, ie ZEN 9 not Z 9. Just curious. Also Why doesn't a full manual come with the camera. Instead of a small few page manual. Doesn't seem right that Nikon expects the buyer to download 900 plus pages to aid in learning their new camera. Thank you
Photographic features (sensor, FPS, etc.) aside, I'm impressed at the amount of usability improvements Nikon has (finally) brought. The customisation of the EVF/display, the starlight mode, etc. are all unrelated to the sensor and likely CPU, so I'm surprised Nikon took that long to bring them. Well, not complaining, but hoping they come later in other cameras too. Thank you for the very informative video!
*I am requesting a True 24.00p frame rate be added to the Z9 via a firmware update. Fractional frame rates are of no use in direct Cinema production. We need a 24p setting which is an actual 24.00p setting. Also, is it possible to get a full 8K DCI resolution out of the Z9's sensor ? What is listed in the settings is Ultra 8K, not full 8K DCI resolution.*
Hi Chris, I'm interested to know about the build quality of the body? Is it in the same league as the D4, D5, or D6. Have you noticed any difference in quality of bodies between the Z7II and this camera? Regards, Richard, UK
Hi Richard, the Z 9 is a tank and is built to the same high-level that a D6/D5/D4 is; this means a full magnesium alloy shell, and complete weather sealing. Since there is no mechanical shutter, the overall durability of the Z 9 is actually higher because there are less moving parts as the shutter mechanism is a complex system. The Z 9 obviously feels larger in the hands than a Z 6II/7II, and there are differences (like a new locking mechanism on the card slot door) that maybe set the Z 9 a bit apart, but the Z 7II is built to ver high standards already :)

Is there still a DX mode? If so, what are the file sizes like for the 3 compression settings and does the buffer size change at all?
Yes, there is still a DX mode. I don't have exact info yet for all file sizes, I'm waiting on the manual to be released and then will have a better idea.
Oh please Nikon have enough cameras so I get mine before the year is up :). Deposit paid; can't wait! My D6 is already pouting :)
If you are an NPS member, don't forget to login to your NPS account and let Nikon know you placed your order. They will ask for the authorized dealer info and your order number. I placed my order on Oct 28 and notified Nikon. They told me that I would have this mine this year and BH confirmed the expected shipping date to me in December. So here's to hoping. :)
@@reneefariasphoto40 Sadly (for me :) ) 100% of my income doesn't come from photography so ! don't qualify for NPS. It won't kill me to wait, tho I'm sure I'll whine terribly if my Z9 is not among the December deliveries :)
Good afternoon. A lot of different information, but not a word about bitrate. The Canon R3 in 6K RAW video weighs in at 20GB / min. How much space does 8K RAW 30p and ProRess 422 HQ 10bit 60p take in 1 minute?
Good show. I use 2 D850s and am in the market for a Z8 or Z9. I am leaning toward the Z9 because of battery life (I don't like changing batteries!), and build quality. I shoot portraits, architecture, and landscapes. I want to get into some video in the future. Does the Z9 have a noticeable more rugged build quality than the Z8? Thank you!
I am curious about which post processing software was used for still and video editing. Which ones can today handle the RAW files or was every still shot in JPG and that is what is shown to us?
Nikon NX Studio v1.1.0 supports already the Z 9 and is available for download.

Hi Chris. Do you know if the dof preview in the z9 stops at f5.6 in the z9 like the Z6/7 or if it shows the accurate dof in the viewfinder at f8, 11 etc for shooting stills
To ensure enough light contacts the sensor for autofocus at all times, the Z 9 will not stop down below f/5.6 just as the older Z 6/7 models. You can use the Preview custom button to get a Depth of Field preview that will stop the lens down to the correct aperture if you'd like.

Does the Z9 at least allow you to hit dof preview when zoomed in to check focus, when trying to assess if a focus stacked image is required. On the other z cameras the viewfinder resets full view when you hit dof preview. The R5 allows you to preview when zoomed in in the viewfinder. On Nikon, you have to switch to video mode and then you can preview when zoomed in. This feature is really helpful in composing landscapes and with fashion photography where focus is critical
Good afternoon from Italy. Two questions here, and blame youtube not to be able to link the clip :( First question: does the silent mode takes into account of noise (uselessly) generated by the FTZ when mounting F lenses? My Z7II even without any lens, any time it goes standby or touch anything with the FTZ, produces a very annoying "BZZT" which is everything but nice in silent environments like churches and theaters. Second question: where is now the metering button ? I can't see anywhere on the body. Thanks
Hi Dino, that annoying "Bzzt" is actually the sensor-shift VR system locking in place, and is done as a safety precaution to ensure the IBIS system is always protected. While it does make some noise, if it didn't do this there is the chance that the IBIS system could be damaged or lose its accuracy over time. So the Z 9 continues with the VR lock functionality, and will make a small noise even if Silent Mode is turned ON, but it's being done for a good reason :). To change metering you can customize one of a number of the buttons on the body, or use it the way I do, which is to have it within the i menu.
@@chrisogonek4304 mmm not sure about the first thing or at least I don't think it explains everything. I dont see any reason (with FTZ adapter mounted and no lenses or even with them) why if I touch the camera to resume from standby or view images the vr should come into play. I know Z lenses are very quiet ( I have a friend who has Z6 and native lenses and it doesn't hear anything, as I could show you on a clip ); in my case every time you touch the Z7II with the FTZ mounted you get that BZZT. Every single time. If I can have a mail, I can show you the four clips I've recorded about it.
Chris good evening, another thing. I think Z lenses are obviously more suited to work with Z cameras and I have a lot of pro F lenses eager tobe mounted on both F. D and Z bodies. I wonder if the FTZ / F lenses might be put more under stress than the Z lenses for a particular reason: Z9 is 45 MP and with DSLR is possible the AF fine tune for obvious reasons; I wonder if the new Z lenses might have a finer engine regulation and longer lasting compared to their F counterparts, natively designed to work with lower MP bodies. What I mean is: it might be that F lenses engine and focus systems are somehow more under stress on a Z body rather than say D6? I tried to use an old 28-70 F/2.8D on the Z7II and it died after a few focusing back and forth.. My opinion is it wasn't designed to be focused SO precisely/finely and after a while of back and forth it failed. The lens worked until that moment on my F and D bodies.
Am I understanding you correctly for the video codecs, all frame rates are available in each codec and bit depth?
Hi Damon, most of the codecs are available at all frame rates and bit depth, but not at all. Without going through every single one, the major difference is that 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ is only available at 4K 24/30/60p, not in 8K or 4K 120p.

One of my questions, does the camera works when charged by the USB with or without battery inside? Can we use a wall USB charger or a power-bank?
Hi Terry, you must have a battery in the camera for USB Power Delivery to function. You can use either a wall USB charger or USB PD power bank, but please ensure that all components are compatible (the USB C cable, the wall charger and the USB C PD Powerbank), otherwise the correct amount of power will not be transferred to the Z 9.

@@TerryKontopoulos If the camera is off, the camera will charge the battery. If the camera is on, you will only get power being delivered, the battery won’t actively be charged.
@@chrisogonek4304 Please bear with me, finally the camera it will work and the battery it will not charge till the camera switched off but the Z9 it will work with the external power (as long the battery remains in?) I'm sorry for the tedious questioning but it is very important for me for the case of when I'm out of battery I could continue if my power pack can provide the right voltage... BTW I've preordered the monster with the 24-70 & 70-200mm 😊
The 1st thing after some careful set-up will be to test the High ISO noise performance. It's certainly not bad on the Z6 so it will be interesting to compare to see if advances in sensor tech can match it with its smaller photo-sites.
The problem with this only 45mp resolution isn't just file size. I appreciate the compression (though many people cannot accept any lossy compression), but once you open the file in your software, it's eating up 45mp of memory. It takes CPU time to update a 45mp image in memory. Brides don't need 1200 45mp files from a wedding. They are still massive images, maybe not with regards to the file system, but they are everywhere else.
I´m starting to watch and the following calls my atention... The tripod foot ends up at the same level as the base of the grip. Was it always like that on DSLR? If not, it tells something :)

@@michael-4k4000 Z9 body was designed more than 2 years ago. Z8 (?) will maintain design and size but ligther. Nikon Z is extremely thought philosophically balanced system. My gear: Z14-24 2.8, Z35 1.8, Z50 1.8, Z70-200 2.8, Z6 and Z6 II. Hope I get back to work here (South America) as before so I can order a Z9! Salute!
Oh dear - was hoping for more on the menu system rather than the gee-whizz - isn't the AF totally cool! Most of already know that! More detail on the memory banks, what buttons are back-lit etc, etc.
Hey Paul, I thought 22 minutes of pure menu diving was all I could get away with before the interviews! Menu banks are used the same way as our other flagship cameras, and there are lots of photos of the Z 9’s new buttons….hopefully you enjoyed some of the really minor features like Warm Display Colours or the EVF customization.
@@chrisogonek4304 - hey Chris, thanks for your replay. Being newly retired, I've plenty of time to trawl KZhead for further info on the Z9. As you will be aware, the response to using the Z9 has been extraordinary with many pro's stating how it would completely change how they work in that they can concentrate on framing or composition almost exclusively. So, we now know that Nikon has sorted AF tracking. What I want now is far more detail of the menu options & operation. So the little you dared offer was most welcome!
Is there any help for focus pullers (manual focusing) for cinema work ?
Based on the recent firmware update to the 70-200, it looks like the Z9 supports both linear and non- linear focusing. This appears to be set in custom setting f9, but I don't know what all the options are yet, or which lenses will be supported.
@@knightsabre7 I suspect that linear focusing is not possible in nikon z lenses because they do not use linear focusing motors. Z lenses use stepping motors. So it might be a drawback of Z system..
@@vikastiwari1844 This is what the latest firmware update to the 70-200 says: "When an option other than Non-linear is selected for Custom Setting f9 (Focus ring rotation range), the focus ring responds linearly to focus changes between the minimum focus distance and infinity, regardless of the speed with which the ring is rotated." That sounds to me like both linear and non-linear focusing is possible, at least with the 70-200. We'll know for sure though once the Z9 starts shipping and the full manual is released.

No, every mode is 14-bit.

@@starlight7830 There's a future firmware update coming that will do 12-bit RAW Video in 8K 60p. All still images recorded as a RAW are 14-bit.
Hopefully is a better camera than the POS called the D850.

QQQ - What happened to the Z9 going to be 16bit stills? QQQ - The Z9 has a mechanical shutter - why is the flash sync only 1/200 sec even the Sony A1 has 1/400...
Hey Roy, the Z 9 actually doesn't have a mechanical shutter, it only uses an electronic shutter. 16-bit RAW files were only rumours that were posted before the launch of the Z 9, it was never a real feature, sorry!
16bit was a rumor, Nikon never said it, and sync speed does not really matter. This does not have a mechanical shutter, its 100% electronic.
I can see how needing a higher flash sync is important in certain situations. For me, it's important from time to time but I simply use HSS mode. All my cameras are defaulted to HSS. Back when I used mainly medium format, I loved the sync speeds being higher but most only went to 1/1000, so I welcomed HSS going to 1/8000 and I have never looked back. Nearly every pro strobe system Elinchrom, ProPhoto, BronColor have sync remotes that use HSS features. Heck even small strobes like Nikons and 3rd parties like Godox have this ability and are accurate and affordable. For small strobes I use 3 Godox V1n with wireless trigger that allows me to use HSS. In studio my Elinchrom trigger allows the same. Just food for thought. www.reneefarias.com
Your "selling" the volume control and toggeling the "shutter" behavior as "easter eggs" and "hidden features" is a bit laughable. Stick to the real meat, leave out the self-evident topics such as finder display size, (REALLY? You can't just toggel it and observe?). Or the toggeling of subjet detection (you wonder how people could EVER grasp that one out without a YT video. 😉), just to name a few. Only a moron or a complete neophyte couldn't figure out these functions within a few seconds each, imho. But neophytes usually don't buy flagships worth 5+ grand and most prospective buyers HAVE seen a camera with toggle menues before, no? Like in their smart phones? You know, those odd devices that approx. 4 BILLION people on the planet own and swap every three years on average?? Stripped of all the obvious and superfluous fluff, this 53 minute video could easily be reduced to about 20 minutes of actually useful information that the clip DOES contain. The Z9 and its myriad functions are truely fantastic - no need to ride the hype-horse dead! Having saif that - thank you Nikon for the Z9. It's epic!
