2024 BMW X5 | The First Choice

2024 ж. 8 Мам.
254 522 Рет қаралды

We reviewed the newly updated 2024 BMW X5 to discuss the changes and the V8 and I6 options. While some tech and styling may be questionable, this is one of the brand's best efforts in terms of usability, reliability, and price for a luxury SUV. The Porsche Cayenne, Lexus GX, Audi Q5, Acura MDX Type S, and Genesis QV70 are others to consider.

  • I had a 2019 X5 40i and now have a 2023 X7 M60i. Looked at the Cayenne both times but just could not understand why it cost 40-50k more outside of having to pay the Porsche tax. Finally good to see a review that actually tackles that ridiculous delta instead of pretending both cars are equally priced.

    @samsharma9207@samsharma92072 ай бұрын
    • The Porsche tax is worth it to many people because of (a) how you can customize it to your liking a la carte, and (b) the superior design of driver controls and screens … As a veteran Porsche owner, I can say that it’s possible to spend close to base MSRP and get a fabulous vehicle without loading up on crazy options; for me that happily means all-metal roof, smallest wheels, no “premium” packages, no additional expensive interior options having to do with leather or carbon fiber, etc.

      @cbatiau2528@cbatiau25282 ай бұрын
    • @@cbatiau2528 I think the argument makes more sense for the 911, but it doesn't hold true as much for the Cayenne. How many Cayenne owners are going down the PTS and Manufactur route with their vehicles? Anecdotal, but I barely see any Cayennes with specialty paint or bespoke options in the way I see 911s with them. In either case, more people skip the tax as the X5 outsells the Cayenne by almost double (and there are plenty of Cayenne allocations unlike the 911).

      @samsharma9207@samsharma92072 ай бұрын
    • @@samsharma9207 I doubt that the X5 outsells the Cayenne if the prices are the same. And, actually, E-Hybrid Cayenne allocations are rather sparse right now; the 2024 version appears to be quite popular. Dealerships tend to do the same-old thing with all their cars -- get pano roofs (most people I know don't care for them and/or don't even want them), get large wheels (reduces safety and range and comfort), and put in premium packages with stuff that most people don't need (and often won't even use). In the GLE 450e, I can't get ACC without ordering a huge package of stuff that I don't want/need and spend a bunch of cash for that unneeded/unwanted stuff. When you special-order your own Porsche, you can trim out so much excess and get what you want -- and, for sure, people with huge amounts of disposable income will max out their specially-optioned cars with very unnecessary stuff. But there's a lot of good stuff that you can option in Cayennes that you simple cannot option in an X5 or a GLE, like heated windshield, infrared camera, compass/clock on dashboard, all-metal roof, and (in Taycan) electrochromic glass roofs. I also feel much safer in a Cayenne than in a GLE or an X5 (or an XC90, even) on the road, due to better stability, lower roofline, and lower center-of-gravity.

  • According to the statistics gathered from my own shop, the latest iterations of BMW engines (especially the B58) are built substantially well. As long as you do your maintenance, these engines should reach 100K miles. But regardless, German engines run hotter. Their regulating coolant temps are 220-230F. And when running in extreme heat like Texas summers, plastic hoses will crack, gaskets will harden, etc.

If I was going to have a car for 5 yrs, would pick Acura for reliability over base X5. For a Type “S” though, performance at 10/10 was slightly weak, + MPG wasn’t great. 50e is well over second faster to 60, faster 1/4 mile, plus way better MPG, but paid about $8K more than MDX. We're on our second Cayenne and my wife asked for another because we loved the first one so much but after driving the X5....I'm wondering a bit where my extra money went. That last 5% of an improvement costs you a lot. I'm glad I got the pre-facelift Cayenne as I believe the price jumped even more and the quality is lower. Edit: it's funny Jack said that last 5-10%. because I said that before even watching the video. LOL. He completely made my same point. I took a 400 mile road trip and it made it all the way there (just barely) on 1 tank of fuel averaging 25.5 mpg and 25.1 mpg the trip back avg around 75 mph both trips. Around town driving though, it's avg about 15~17mpg and burns through a tank every 250~270 miles. No regrets though. It's an absolutely hilarious vehicle but still hella practical for my working dad life.

  • I bought the sedan version of this car (M550i) because of exactly what you said, I wanted a V8 and nothing else! It is an amazing car and I get near M5 performance for a lot less money and a way better everyday driving experience than the true M car. Oh and as you also said, if you can get these cars a couple of years old, they are an incredible value! I got my 2021 M550i that had an MSRP of $90k for $58k with a BMW certified warranty! This car kind of achieves the same thing in the SUV category. I agree that the Cayenne is better but not so much better that it justifies the significant premium. If money was no issue, then I'd get a Cayenne Turbo GT. My wife has the B58 version of this car and it is such a great vehicle! The engine is awesome, the transmission is near perfect and the car is super comfortable with a very capable adaptive suspension to match. No one does luxury SUV's better than BMW at a price that is still somewhat affordable!

  • The "lease this car" because of how much it depreciates argument rarely makes any sense. Lease payments are primarily determined by depreciation. And, unless the manufacturer is subsiding the lease program more than the buy/rebate program or you can take advantage of specific tax laws (which are generally not applicable to the typical W2 employee), the lease payments will usually cost you more than the depreciation, otherwise the captive or other finance co. that is leasing you the vehicle would lose money.

    @1855Media@1855Media2 ай бұрын
    • @@japanwatchconnection But the average person, who wants nothing to do with reselling a vehicle, or even servicing it over the long term, gets what they perceive as a lower monthly payment that doesn't really change after the 36/48/50 month lease period. With 315’s on the rear I have no complaints about the handling. Canyon roads out west are a blast for an SUV. The Bowers and Wilkins sound makes you feel like you’re at a concert. The power is so satisfying. I drive7 is very simple to learn and quick to access the main functions of the car. My only critique is the steering inputs are not quite as smooth as the Cayenne. The MB and Audi competition doesn’t come close to what you get with the M50 in my opinion. I did spend an extra 4k for a 24 month bumper to bumper warranty and maintenance package due to the potential very high service costs associated with owning a vehicle like this. My two cents.

Never mind the fact they BMW refuses to have separate amber signals (Mercedes and Audi are starting to introduce them now), but on the X5, the LED's light up from a low output to high output instead of high to low. Not sure how best to describe it other than many Mazda's have their amber turn signals fade from bright to low but BMW is the opposite.
