Huge Shake Up At Mercedes After Wolffs Shocking Announcement!
So I think we can all agree, having seen the team struggle and seemingly decline over the course of the first 3 race weekends, Mercedes are in the mud. Not only are they in the mud, they seemingly can’t fathom how it’s happened, with a general bemusement visible from the team, its staff and its drivers. Melbourne was seemingly the nadir of this, with a first double DNF in 5 years for the Brackley team, which only exaggerated the Mercedes woes. While they weren’t exactly going to finish outside the points entirely, with Russel’s last lap crash happening while the Brit was still in the points scoring positions, neither driver is anywhere near threatening the front, which is a far cry from the position the team ended last year in. After 2 seasons of ups and downs, where the downs came in the form of near undrivable machinery and the ups came in a single shock win at an incredibly dramatic interlagos, Mercedes decided that 2024 was the perfect time to press the factory reset button and start fresh with a new concept. It’s fair to say that so far it’s not exactly working out, but given the team's surplus of engineers and engineering talent, why exactly is that? Well the buck has to stop somewhere, and as much as Mercedes wants to keep that famous no-blame culture, it may be far harder to maintain that when you’re no longer 2 seconds down the road.

  • I just realized, their reign ended once the budget cap was implemented… So, it’s not really that they just became this bad, but rather that the rest managed to catch up. It’s like dominating single player mode, winning it all with ease. But then deciding to join online mode where all of a sudden your great skills aren’t as great anymore. Hamilton jumping a sinking ship (again) is the smarter move, but going to Ferrari isn’t. It’s not a team known to bend over backwards to give you what you want, not a team that’s particularly good at strategy, reliability or plain consistency. A team that’s historically cutthroat if you don’t give them what they want. And then there’s Charles who certainly won’t back down like Valtteri did. As much as I hate to say it, but Charles schooled Seb, and he’s only been getting better since. But then again, we don’t know what Lewis tries to achieve at Ferrari…

    • Learn more about F1 ... Mercedes Dominance ended when the rules were changed ! The rules were changed IN ORDER TO END MERCEDES DOMINANCE ! Simple really ! Mercedes did not forget how to build a great car ! The fans wanted F1 shaken up as they were bored seeing Mercedes win everything ! .. Sad ??? maybe ! but Toto and his team know that they need to sit back and let someone else win for a bit longer ... This is the time to test and learn , ready for their next attack on the titles ! BUT NOT YET

  • Hamilton is older and has a lot more to do to adjust his driving style to the car. He has to unlearn a lot to get a hold of the car. Its not a car comparable to rb and ferrari. I dont believe hamilton is so slow of a driver that on equal machinery he vesrtappen and leclerc would all be within a tenth. They are loosing a development battle as well as lewis being older than all of them. Adjustments are harder to make in my opinion. He has what it takes to compete but if it was younger hamilton i think hes just as skilled as max or leclerc etc. Even a good car he was still beating his teammates. Even if the car was great he still had to be consistent and fast and even better than his teammate in the same car to get 7. Dont downplay the fact he has been good enough to win 7 titles. Thats unfair. Hes not the same guy he used to be. Hes different and older

    • I think Hamilton and Alonzo have a deep understanding of vehicle dynamics considering they’ve driven many different iterations of the F1 car with success. The engineers lost the opportunity to utilize that deep experience based off their simulation data. They believed their AI generated data over what the driver could communicate. They’ve learned the hard way the same lesson we learn in real life; analog data has value .

      @dcrasta@dcrastaАй бұрын
  • He needs to listen to what the drivers are feeling when driving and what the car is feeding back to the drivers, not the engineers. What looks great on paper does not mean it is great in the real world.

    @radtrukz@radtrukzАй бұрын
    • Agreed, but it looks like the engineers can't proces the feedback from the drivers properly, because in the windtunnel and in simulations everything seems to work fine. This is where Lauda played an important role, as he was that rarity in F1: a driver who was also an engineer and therefore able to both explain his feedback in engineering terms ánd to solve issues himself. Hamilton leaving is because he feels that the engineers are doing nothing with his feedback and that frustrates him. From the engineer's point it must be pretty frustrating as well: everything they come up with works fine in both the windtunnel and in the simulator, but it doesn't seem to work at all on the track. Personally, I think this is the inherent weakness that Mercedes created when they let all their experienced engineers go and replaced them with very talented, but inexperienced engineers. last and not exactly least: Mercedes has problems with their chassis and aero from the moment they returned to F1 and they simply can't seem to turn it around.

  • Merc have gone from super to super lost, absolutely no real or genuine idea of the ground effect, how to make it work to good effect, hence what we see of their woeful offering, its affect on the drivers and their feedback, who, with the best will, are unable to put the power down with confidence and compliance from the car. Toto has to shoulder blame, despite the pain and frustration for the drivers, he too often seems almost nonchalant and resigned to the situation - probs part down to the fact Merc are not poor, he has a huge shareholder stake in the company, being a cosy billionaire.

  • The story of the last three, maybe four seasons has been a constant reference to what we are seeing in the wind tunnel, isnt what we are seeing on the track. That cannot happen year on year and be the main excuse, surely they have sufficient data, and reliable data to workout what is wrong, and what they need to do to make an improvement. If they dont, then clearly something is wildly wrong in their R&D model, and in their data capture systems. You dont need advanced engineers to work that out, christ you dont really need data scientists to work that out.

  • Not sure why Mercedes is getting so much attention over this issue. The struggle to get it right is the rule rather than the exception. They dominated with the previous era car, while everyone else was struggling. This is by design by the FIA. If it was easy, everyone would vying for the front. A lot of teams are struggling. This notion that Mercedes is supposed to be on top forever, and when they are not. Is such a surprise, Is crazy. They are just another team trying to get it right.

  • Mr. Toto Wolff: A great leader knows when to step back. Your indecision is affecting the team and it shows. You are no longer the “cheerleader in chief” you previously claimed to be. Stepping away is not failure, you still co-own the team. Give the TP role to someone else. James Allison, since you let James Vowles go. Or take your pick. The leadership of this team has stagnated or moved on in recent years. Simply stop being a clog.

  • Hamilton was right. Given that he's fast, so long as he's in front, he clearly recognizes the need to have the fastest machinery under him. In the same car, there are a number of other drivers who would systematically beat him. Alonso has always had his measure, and so has Verstappen. It's uncharacteristically brave of him to go to Ferrari - my money is on Leclerc. On every race.
