Why Volvo Is Losing Its Big Lead In Safety

The name Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for decades. The brand has often been the first to introduce key safety features that are now common across the car industry. Safety, though, has become a bigger priority for consumers and automakers alike, and that's causing trouble for Volvo. Automotive technology has improved, regulations have tightened, and other brands are catching up. That's making it harder and harder for Volvo to keep its lead in car safety.
For instance, the Volvo XC40 comes with safety features like automatic emergency breaking, oncoming lane collision mitigation, lane keeping aid, and driver fatigue monitoring. Add-ons include a pilot assist semi-autonomous driving system, 360-degree parking camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Many other luxury subcompact SUVs like the Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X1 come with similar standard safety features.

Why Volvo Is Losing Its Big Lead In Safety

  • Volvo is really still the leader. They have shared so much information to others in their research in safety, like how Tesla pioneered the EV market, Volvo pioneered the Safety market. Their safety is amazing, and I am lucky to be able to experience it. Others are catching up, but really, Volvo is still leading it. Deny it all you like, but you know they are the top of the safety chart.

The same argument that the others will catch-up can be made for any type of technology in any business. • Can we stop with the "model 3 safest car" BS. It is a common misconception that the Tesla model 3 is not the safest car. Volvo beat it on adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP's tests. The model 3 didn't perform particular well I'm the small overlap crash test with footwell intrusion. Volvos aslo have stronger roofs. The NHSTA don't even perform an offset test, their crash tests are basic. Please do your research.

    • I disagree, crumple zone is the biggest contributor to safety and without a large engine in the front it has much more of it. It's physics. They also have better polar moment of inertia to spin away from objects. Lower center of gravity to reduce rolling and thus have better handling, perhaps not the best in the industry but adding all of these factors reduce the risk of injury even more and reduce the risk of first getting into a crash. That last point is amplified by autopilot, with all the sensors and these features being present in all models the overall safety factor is higher.

It does not test electronic stability control. I looked for the XC90 test as well, but this group has not tested an XC90 yet.

  • You gotta admit, Volvo is in good hands. They got a lot more funding from Geely for researches and developing new platforms. And their new platforms are shared with Geely's vehicles in China. This really creates a good feedback loop. Yes, in today's world Volvo is harder to stand out in terms of safety because, well, partially they raised the bar to the standard today and even helped other companies to reach that bar. The new styling is really good, especially that Polestar, elegant yet sporty. I recently bought an S90, it looks really nice and infotainment systems are really catching up with the BBAs. I hope they can be the European Lexus and improve on the reliabilities. The other European manufacturers nowadays don't even know what reliability means...

You will also find that your suspension is stronger and not prone to hitting bump stops. Like the video says Volvo builds in rollover protection and I have noticed even my C30 has this built into the interior roof.
