This story reminds me a lot of one of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels ‘Reaper Man.’ In it the characters discover a parasitic species that tries to eat off of and replicate cities and civilizations, with snowglobes as eggs and shopping carts as adolescents. The center is a massive shopping mall continually growing, emulating and replicating what it consumes but is ultimately antithetical to being lived in. Just like the Neon God, the entity grows and tries to be an actual city that makes no sense and can’t really be lived in by humans.
Unrelated to your comment and this video. But i wish someone would add Terry's Nac Mac Feegle to the scp universe. It would be the best to have Rob-Anybody doing an interview with Foundation researchers.

I feel the feeling of modern big SCP articles is "Can we not attract the attention of an all consuming god FOR FIVE MINUTES" . It is interesting though that the Neon God's manifestation manifests as planet sized cities. I wonder why that is and if it is because in a way it reflects humanity. If it is like other gods it might be influenced by the Noosphere.

Personally I see this story as the pinnacle of letting your work lead you. This man wrote this story over and over again and couldn’t find meaning in the words and characters that he was creating. He realized in his mental loop of trying to find a meaning in his work, that sometimes there is no meaning and he accidentally wrote the PERFECT story to encapsulate that concept. Along the way he expressed some pretty poignant ideas. Proving that just because there is no satisfying meaningful or powerful end to the story, it doesn’t mean that the story in itself is meaningless. Bravo sir

Just wanted to say, I deeply appreciate these readings. I dont have the time nor the attention span to sit down and read a lengthy SCP these days, but I love SCP content. Its a great pleasure to put these on at the beginning of my work day each week and get to enjoy a fascinating SCP tale. Thank you for this series!
100% agree. These tales can be very, very lengthy and a podcast/voice reading has helped me get into the longer tales that animated channels don’t want to/can’t cover

I agree.i work at a warehouse and have nothing but time. Being able to listen to an SCP article read well is a great way to get your SCP fix. Not only that, it's always great material to keep your mind active.

I like that the neon God is basically the archetype of modernity in contrast to the scarlet king.
To add to the "Mirror" concept, Neon desperately wants to Create and be loved but doesn't know how and Scarlet King only knows how to destroy and be feared.
@@thebighurt2495 The funny thing is, The name "Neon God" was originally a working title for a 001 file Tufto was brainstorming. The concept was reworked into the tale "Some Are Born to Endless Night", and the preceding article SCP-3553. The tale's protagonist, Jacob Montauk, is actually the brother of Robert Montauk, who appears in the 001 file that Tufto DIDN'T scrap: The Scarlet King. I'm not sure if SCP-7005 is related to the original Neon God concept which inspired SABtEN, but I think the duality is intentional.

Man the speech about the city around minute 25 has mad "children of the city" vibe and just "the city" in general from Library of Ruina (which is not much of a surprise concidering how much SCP influenced the Project moon universe). Really loved, and very well read.

When my family moved to a newly built neighborhood, I remember walking down the streets and observing the chaotically stacked new buildings. No trees between them, no parking spaces, just and endless sprawl of storefronts with a few floors of housing above. I remember fantasizing about an endless city just like it and a brave group of survivors trying to escape it. So this SCP feels very familiar

I lived in the woods my whole childhood. This encapsulates how it feels to be in the city as an adult. To view it and the systems behind it knowing you understand only pieces. You buy products without knowing what company really makes it, and that company is really owned by another, owned by yet another. You don’t know where it was produced, or what other company is a supplier for the parts or ingredients. You see so many buildings and outside of banks or churches, all the others are devoid of immediate purpose at a glance. Rented office spaces, a business with apartments above it maybe, and sure there are signs on the street level but what’s that building in the distance? What’s ABOVE the Starbucks you’re looking at? You hear about random obscure jobs that you’ll never understand but pay well. I’m still doing basic ‘unskilled’ labor but Joe over there works out of an office above 3 other businesses, parks in a random lot you’d never notice, and makes 3 times what I do but in truth does nothing all day. On call electrician for a hospital, or something, plays games all day until something breaks and delays a surgery. Or a paper towel sniffer to make sure they’re scentless. Or he watches a production line all day and pushes a button 118,456 times a day, or only pushes the button if something goes wrong. I wouldn’t even know who to ask about one of these random obscure positions, or what classes I’d need to take to qualify. I don’t know the address or the website of where I’d apply. I don’t know the purpose or meaning of everything around me, who owns it, what it’s zoned for, it’s all together. Just people and places and work being done that I don’t comprehend. Like an anthill for people. Thinking about it makes me feel things that I don’t have words for. It’s too complex and so are my emotions around it. Self justifying yet also lacking any real justification. I hate cities. Edit: this got traction so I’ll add more. Every open window and light left on at night, I wonder who’s in there and what they’re doing. I will never know. And again, there’s something else above it in the same building. Even my small bank on the corner where I live, has 3 stories and an elevator for some reason. I know it’s purpose, it’s a bank, but why so many extra rooms? Who takes those positions and offices and fills them up with paperwork? I only see the ladies that work the front. My gf took college art classes and the studio space they rented, (they re-lease different spaces every few semesters too) has extra classrooms and supply closets and three floors. Never seen any non-teacher staff, who do they hire to sweep and clean the bathroom? Other buildings are mere feet away with small alleys. One is apparently residential, with screened-in outcroppings that have a gorgeous view… of the alley. We got up on the roof one day and saw people using one, didn’t even talk to them. I wanted to ask if it was an apartment or hotel or something. Tons of buildings are almost entirely unmarked. Sure I can pick out those with signs, medical buildings, physical therapy centers, dentists, shopping malls, all those buildings with suites for business leases and random small businesses… car dealerships and other such places are obvious. But there are HUGE buildings with next to no external markings, at least ones you don’t see in passing. They’re all around the buildings you can put a purpose to, in the backdrop, above them. Entire production facilities are on the back roads. Places zoned for industrial work. An entire KIA plant I used to pass on the way to work? Didn’t know it was a KIA plant for 4 months until I finally got to ask somebody about it, and they only knew because a family member used to work there. The overwhelming sense of curiosity blends with confusion, along with my adult brain knowing that each of the people filling positions in these buildings are every bit as conscious and thoughtful as me, but this is normal to them. Not knowing doesn’t bother them and they don’t feel the same tug I feel towards wanting to know why that light in the window is still on. Who’s there, and what are they staying late to work on? And why is everything so unmarked and cold? I think this is why people like me kind of idolize Asian cityscapes. Everything has a sign and that helps, but it’s a trade off because man is it crowded and overstimulating. Anyways, it bothers me intensely and gives me that strange mix of emotions. With even more melancholy, or straight up fear, when those spaces are empty. And empty it is. I’ve spent time downtown and aside from the night life the street is very empty during the day. I see remarkably few people for the stated population density of the downtown area. That bothers me even more. It gets under my skin, all of it. The colors, the perception of activity but surprising absence of people, the lack of information, clear purpose and intent. How can something humans built feel so alien? ^Ditto. I live in a highly populated city, but we're VERY spread out. The low population density means it doesn't feel like a big city. You can actually get to know your neighbors, it's one of the safest places there is, and it's a place where people can make themselves a home (you should have seen the terraforming my neighbors did when they first moved it- I didn't even know a front yard in a working class neighborhood could look like that, but they made it there own!). A lot of people around here even grow some of their own food (including me!) in their backyards, some own goats and/or or chickens, and the legit farming areas of the city are only a few miles down the road. I've been to bigger cities. I live fairly close to Phoenix. Being in the West, it's still more open than most older cities, but there's just too much bustle. I was born in Philadelphia, and still visit fairly often because my sister lives there- and we have friends who may as well be family in the area- and it's always a stressful environment. Pittsburgh is better. I still prefer the boroughs outside of it, but the city itself doesn't feel as oppressive as others. I visited New York City once, and I hope to God I never have to go back. I never want to live in an area more densely populated than where I am now, and it's my aspiration to one day live in a smaller even less densely populated town. The big cities are just not my cup of tea.
Of all the stuff you said, the one thing that actually bothers me is that you apparently implied that Churches have a purpose.

As an Asian 4005 was cringe at the beginning. Like the way he smashed multiple Asian cultures of DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES was really jarring. Like mix SEA, South Asia, East Asia or Middle East cultures within themselves all you like. But adding Arabic or Indian elements to flipping China is just brain melting. 4005 gave me whiplash. I love the non explicit references to other SCPs, the snow cognitohazard that assimilated everything, the Architect, Lamplight and the way this meshes with Tufto's 001 proposal thematically. And to hear Tufto explain it in their own words is interesting. And when they explain it, its beautiful. This idea of trying to make your own meaning.

I did not expect 'Mongol' to pop up multiple times during the reading! Had to rewind the first time and check if I heard it right. It's so rare when people actually do a little research into my country's past and use it in such an interesting way, even if it's just a small part of the story. Oftentimes, it's very shallow. I also checked out the SCP site, and the image is one I recognize easily, as often as I rode those trains in my childhood. I already love listening to your SCP narrations, but this made it even better. Kudos to you and the author!

@@wigligigly3375 there are so many these days I think there's an untapped niche for people to make collections of articles and tales. Not canons, nothing quite that deliberate and pre-planned but more like vibes I guess. A collection of entries where the foundation plays god and pays the price, a collection of more heartwarming entries, a collection of lore-heavy entries that require a bunch of prior knowledge to properly appreciate, a collection of skips that are just weird and unexplainable with no meaning behind them, another where the skips are all allegorical, etc.

The Neon God seems to be a variation of SCP-184. Perhaps that reality’s 184 also expands the outside of a building, not just the inside.
184 was the architect right? Pretty sure that when it is outside it does expand the universe its in.

Despite not having some kind of epic climax, I find this SCP to be one of the more satisfying ones, just due to the fact you actually get to see the Neon God. It's not just a series of black bars, it's not a word salad of nonsensical gibberish and sci-fi terms, you actually see the god, in all its fitting underwhelmingness as a manifestation of meaninglessness and nihilism. I also appreciate getting to hear the thought process behind the creation of this SCP, how abstract themes are represented narratively through a progression of characters and the choice of imagery. It gave me some newfound appreciation for the ending twist, that the railway didn't result in the Neon God, but the other way around. It's not that 'something' resulted in 'nothing' (the construction of the railway resulting in the spread of the Neon God, effort and ambition ending only in ruin), but instead 'something' came from 'nothing', that hope and meaning can be found even in the depths of meaninglessness. It's really impressive how much thought actually went into this, and how subtle it all manages to be.
The idea of how events in your life could've happened differently in your life by one or more decisions or coin tosses is an idea explored in one of my all time favorite movies: Another Earth. I highly recommend it for anyone that is philosophicaly inclined, the bones of the film is kind of a mind bender.

As Tufto states, the ending doesn't really need to be conclusive. While this normally would not work at all in other works of fiction, it works in SCP, as the foundation faces many fights with no end in sight.

@@LAN2D This was actually Tufto's original SCP-001 proposal several years back. However, he didn't like how it turned out so he deleted it and gave his Scarlet King proposal instead. This is basically his original 001 remastered and refined.

Lamplight is set many many more years into the future, like some thousands of years after the events of the Neon god, here we hear about the lamp light prophecy and if I recall correctly lamp light is at the very opposite side of where the neon god is, aside from that I don't remember in lamplight any mention of the Neon god or anything like that, It's very interesting, I wish we could delve a bit more into the lore of this "canon"

This is a great SCP, any multiversal story is a big winner for me. I don't comment often, but I need to mention how much you breathe life in these stories. I have been following your exploring series for a long time and it's crazy just how much you improved your craft over time. These SCPs aren't exactly becoming simpler either, to properly distill and make a coherent story out of them is a skill in and of itself (and immense amount of work). Keep that flame lit, this fan will keep on listening : )

This might be my favorite SCP yet. The distinction changes time and again, but this one speaks to me. When I first deconverted from Catholicism, I was trying to work in my head the absence of meaning, the absence of an afterlife or anything like that. Once you leave religion, you have to face those parts of your reality in a different way. 7005 reminds me of that, that search for meaning in a world that is meaningless, and ultimately there not really being one, but there is the place to take that lack of anything and turn it into something. Taking the chisel from the sleeping hands and carving the runes into the air to make yourself. I'm absolutely just reflecting my own experiences onto this SCP and it's narrative, but I think that's the point. It's different for everyone. I think that's really moving.
I don't know why so many people think it's hard to find meaning. How is an afterlife any different from tomorrow? If you want your life to be satisfying, just enjoy the present; that's all that ever actually exists.

i am starting to think TES is either an actual SCP or part of an SCP or one of the archiving AIs of the foundation sent in our timeline to tell the stories of all the foundations mishaps and achievements on other timelines. SCP-001 Proposal; Object Class: Thaumiel Task: Declassify SCP documents across timelines to trivialize anomalies and effectively eliminate its hold in reality on the current timeline therefore securing it's "safety" and providing a timeline for foundations with access of inter-dimensional travel a fall back base. man, i just want a small series where an SCP just erases anomalies (i know there's one out there i forgot what number it was) then just downright explains with some weird really detailed explanation why our reality doesn't seem to have any anomalies present then just turns it head that it was actually intended to be because if humanity is doomed for almost infinite times, foundation knows that at least 1 is continuing the existence of mankind.

This is probably one of the best SCPs I've come across so far, even if mechanically it feels like someone read Blame and decided to add multiverses to it, the actual "soul" of the tale is what's really impactful.

If the title of the SCP wasn’t obvious enough, SCP 7005 is partially inspired by “The Sound of Silence” the author even word for word quoting the last verse of the song in the comments: “And the people bowed and prayed to the Neon God they made. And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming Then the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls, And whispered in the sound of silence.” The Neon God is sometimes likened to a cancer spreading, just as the sound of silence describes: …”Silence like a cancer grows…” The point of the both the song and this SCP is people’s desperate rebellion against the uniform and monotonous silence that our modern world has become. People trying to find their voice and be heard beneath the deafening and oppressive silence. The Neon God represents this silence and the despair of it. It is this cancerous god that chokes out everything trying to be something, but simply deciding to exist for the sake of existing. It is Nihilism in it’s purest form. It’s eternity without meaning, and simply finding an identity already is a victory over the emptiness of the Neon God.

What an awesome SCP. One of the heaviest ones I've heard of so far.
Maybe I don't get it, but I feel like if the SCP foundation had access to the multiverse where anything is possible, then they should be looking for universes in which they have neutralized "Keter" and "Apollyon" class threats and learn how to do that, and then they could focus efforts on multiversal threats like this.
I think it has to do with how the multiverse works in this story: it’s described as binary and reactionary. For every SCP foundation that uses their 7005 to find out how to contain anomalies, there will be a foundation that doesn’t. Kind of like a Newton’s third law for outcomes. This kind of infinite undoing of every action can lead to a paralyzing nihilism, which we see in the 05-9 conversation.

Reminds me of SCP-4005 - The Holy & Heavenly City of Fabled China; how entire ideal envisioned cities are megalithic country, or continent or even planet wide Ecumenopolises that one imagines due to an anomaly. Never had this level of cities so planetary gigantic that it reaches the planets core or the star itself.
The funny thing is, when SCP-4005, one comment interpreted it as a trap laid by an apocalyptic conspirator, using the lamp as a metaphor for the luring light of an anglerfish. Cut to SCP-5005, which is revealed to be a giant anglerfish, and Tufto edited their reply to mention the connection after initially not noticing the connection. There are some spooky thematic coincidences going on here.

This was a great one. I love the concept of interconnecting multiversal train stations. Such a vast network that although there is a danger to the ‘east’ there are so many, overwhelmingly numerous, stations to travel and explore for lifetimes. And the lore of the line being forgotten through time was great as well. I hope we see the lampeter line in other scp’s. It’s a very cool expansion to scp lore

Your voice and way of narration simultaneously encapsulates the atmosphere and tone, and is also super relaxing. It's my favorite thing to listen to when I get in bed. Thank you so much for the effort you put into these. Other narrators are cool, but nobody holds a candle to what you do. I'll be here to listen to them all :)

If you look at the comments on the SCP article, the author word for word, cites the last verse of the Sound of Silence. Even the theme of this SCP fits the song: the struggle to be heard over the silence of a billion voices, to find what makes you unique, what gives you purpose. In a sense, the Neon God is exactly like the silence described in the song: a cancerous, oppressive growth that chokes out ideas and creativity. The Neon God spreads out, trying to find purpose, choking out and assimilating everything and everyone else in a desperate attempt to have people ‘worship’ it and give it purpose, aka, “The people bowed and prayed, to the Neon God they’d made…”. It is a self defeating narcissistic disease of order: eternal growth for the sake of eternal growth, industrialization even if it pollutes and makes life impossible. In a way, the Neon God is the modern world’s order to the Scarlet King’s primordial chaos. Simply finding a reason that is more than just existence for the sake of existence, is already a victory over it.
I absolutely love any stories involving alternate dimensions, alternate timelines, all that kind of stuff. So this is something that I find very fascinating. I love imagining what could've been or could be somewhere else, that I'll never see. Perhaps that's why SCP intrigues me so much. Especially SCP-507. The idea of whole other worlds you didn't know about that could be potentially right next to you, is super interesting. It definitely deserves its top 5 spot in the contest. It's amazing.
I really liked this video and scp, especially the authors clarification at the end. Sometimes such clarifications are due to bad writing or due to the piece being too “high level” and needing clarification, but this one was a nice look at the author’s honest intentions in writing this piece and frames what was just read in a very nice way.
Whenever the scale of a multiverse or an ancient anomalous world gets bigger and bigger it feels like a Broken Masquerade senario where all kinds of anomalies and sci-fi stuff are normal. And somehow I quickly loose interest even though they are brilliant. I guess my expectation of SCP is more leaning toward mystery and secrecy rather than full-blown fantasy or sci-fi world.

As a European I get the feeling this was written by someone in the US because our cities are very different. They are a mishmash of buildings from different eras. Modern buildings next to old half-timber houses next to historic landmarks. Streets are a complex network (that doesnt always neatly fit modern roads). It's like it grew organically, which it did. People have lived in this place and adapted it to their needs for *hundreds of years* and you feel it. Even big capitals that do have skyscrapers etc have them in certain areas, one part of the collage instead of replacing it. These sterilized mega cities i only know from depictions of US-cities (or places trying to imitate that, like Dubai). I understand what the Neon God represents (and this is amazingly written), I just find it interesting how my impression of cities varies so much
