My struggle is breathing when I try to keep my head horizontal. I feel like I use too much energy turning my head to get air. Love the tips you're giving.
You can watch the video i have about breathing swimming freestyle. Is at the end of this video. Good luck.
joe my students mostly struggle with side breathing so after they are able to kick and take 3 to 4 strokes properly . I show them the Ti superman position just to get the feel of getting of side rotation. Is it wise to ask them to use fins to help them get some speed so that they can breathe easily ...
You have the same problem I have😅
Sir, I am unable to breath comfortably while swimming freestyle. I am 70 year old.
link..?
wonderfully explained, thanks for this
Glad you like it
I love all your tips. I usually swim on the ocean, but always looking to better my swimming. The tide is always changing and sometimes offers some challenge .
Yes swimming in the ocean is great. I love it too
Thanks for the swimming guidance ..
I think I need to practice swimming more often, and need to find a pool in metro.. I hope this video will help me. I love how you show arm pulling while standing at the pool, this is what I need. And I need to practice kicking to make myself comfortable in the water. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Very important tips. Thank you
Thank you great instruction will be following for more video. You helped me correct head position because I used to sink looking up unstead of downwards. Furthermore I struggle with hand movement.
sir your explanations are very clear, loving the tips you share

Excellent explanation I really leant a lot ❤💙👍👌👍👌🏊♀️🏊♀️🏊♀️
Beautiful freestayle
Subscribed! Love it
Thank you for sharing.I got the knowledge what to improve doing freestyle and to avoid leg cramps
Glad you like it. Also do some stretching and dynamic warm up before you go into the water to avoid cramp
Great tips, thx Joseph😊
Hi Joe, I am just in beginning of my training. I am 41 man and I usually like to play tennis a lot and weight lifting. I train 7-8hour /week 4h tennis 4h weight lifting. I been feeling lots of heelpain and shoulder pain from tennis so my goal is to swim as rehab. I am now on my 4hour learning freestyle 🤣. I started with laying on top of water like a ball holding my knees with my arms exhale out all air and sink to bortom of the pool (get the feeling of what happens to body after exhale) Press from the bottom up to the surface breath in above surfa breathe out under surface repeat 6x. Next excersize i lie on side and hold my both hands parallell to my legs and only kick 2-3x then breath 8*25m the goal here is to only to fokus on breathing without using hands, 3 drill I try to swim with 3 stroke freestyle then breath but I get tired, I Think reason is I exhale true mouth and not nose and also sometimes I feel stressed out when it is time to inhale I exhale I need to take is easier slow down the process 🤣. When i feel exhausted I turn on back inhale turn back to normal position. Breathing is most difficult I need to learn how to fill up air to diafragma 70% and take big inhale only smal but control the breathing. Breathing is the most difficult part. I FIGURE out that heavy breathing is causing stress and stiffness in body. I need to be relaxed all time and listen for the sound I find it also difficult to bend forearm. I saw you tip drag fingers on surfa e 👍
Very helpful videos Joe!! Keep uploading such videos but make a separate playlist so that it is easy for viewers. Cheers!
Got it thanks
This is an awesome lesson and tricks !
I love the whole video especially at last high elbow technique ☝️🏊♂️
Glad you like it. Tq
Love this channel. I was breathing out using my mouth , and changed after watching your videos and it definitely has helped immensely.I currently am struggling to get my head out to get some air when breathing freestyle.
You need to rotate your shoulder more when you turn your head for breathing
@Tapasya Sharma
🔥🔥🔥
I was struggling with my hand movements during my freestyle, but now i learnt where i was going wrong. However, if i run out of breath in the middle and wish to stop and stand, i am not able to stand with both my feet on the bottom of the pool. I struggle and flounder.
The first tip was so helpful, thank you so much🔥🔥
Your welcome
thanks 👍
I would like to know more about the timing to breath and the kicking rythem.. is breathing on both side highly recommended? I felt won't shot of breath with both side
Pls watch my other video on breathing. Tq
Hello, Thanks for the tips to improve freestyle for beginners. my struggle is how to breathe properly while doing the freestyle. Thank You
Pls watch my other video on breathing properly with freestyle tq
Thank you Joe for the awesome tips. Looking at this I found the mistake I'm making. 1. My legs drag cos I'm looking forward. I'm looking forward cos I'm watching my arm pull. 2. I need to do the movements without obsessing to see it for myself. 3. I'm definitely going to practice the finger drag drill. Thank you for the awesome video 🙌
Glad you like it. You can watch your arms pull but not all the time. You need to stay streamlined as long as you can in the water
My struggle is, I am unable to take out head outside water and take into water and swim
Well, I settled on a breathing pattern a long time ago, which is every other arm stroke. I did pretty much completely change my arm pull about a year ago, mostly due to 2 videos, one from Effortless swimming about getting full extension, and one from Swim Skills about 'shoulder shrug'. I had always thought I was getting a full extension, but after watching the one video, realized that I could still extend more without starting to snake through the water. The shoulder shrug one made me realize that I was starting to use my shoulder, back, and lats as soon as I started my catch. Proper way is to do the catch, then the 'set up' as the Effortless Swimming guy does, which is mostly getting your forearm vertical, and then engaging all the shoulder, back and lat muscles. It really changed my stroke. Still having to work on it though. Too many years of not swimming it correctly.
Well at least you know what's the right way of doing it now. Good on ya and happy swimming
helpful !!!🙌
Very to the point and useful points! Could u do a video on butterfly please?
Sure. Will attempt one in the future.
Joe, thanks for your video! Very good content. Are you ever in Southern California for swim lessons?
Hi Martin, glad you enjoy the video. Unfortunately I am in Asia now. I can help you to correct your strokes if you can send me a video of yourself swimming.
Hello Coach, your videos are great & useful. My struggle getting tired too soon and breathing from both sides. Currently I only breathe from right. Thank you
Hi, if you need to learn to breathe on both sides you got to do some drills to practice breathing on the less natural side. Getting too tired too fast is due to lack of stamina. This requires more practices in the water
@@Swimtopian Many thanks for your reply, Sir. Do you have videos on drills to breath from both sides ? I will try to improve my stamina by spending more time on the pool. Thank you once again
@@Swimtopian oh is not breathing problem is stamina?? correct sir ?
Thanks so much for the freestyle tips. Do you have any tips for backstroke?
Yes I will make one soon. Stay tuned
good sharing.. 👍👍🏊♀️

Nice video its very helpful 👍
Nice beginner tutorial..simple Ang comprehensive

Nice sir...
thanks for this video, it's excellent! My problem is a kind of "stop-sart" swimming, could you give a tip how to avoid it? thanks!
What do you mean by that? Could you elaborate further pls
@@Swimtopian thanks for the fast reply! I'm trying to glide and feel like stopping after every stroke, which makes the swim not smooth
@@zeevgilkis7970 Could be a few things. Are your legs sinking due to bad body position? Also your hands entry need to feel like you are spearing into the water (fingers enter and not palm enter first)
@@Swimtopian great! thanks! I'll try that
I wold to learn the swiming brasse whit head up .thank you very much
Thank you for the great instruction. How do you 'catch' the water with your fingers?
Make you have a firm hand with outstretched fingers closed but not tight together
Hi Joe Thank you for the tips.I get tired faster while swimming the freestyle due to difficulty in getting out of the water to catch my breath without it entering my nose and i get tired faster while flapping the legs
Try to go easy on the kick

Thanks. Glad you like the video
@@Swimtopian sir whats ur instagram id ??
thanks for great info. i am struggling with kick . i feel like my legs are bit inside water or i might not be kicking very fast. 2. with start of arm movement, i tend to stop kicking.
Can you try swimming with a pull buoy first
Nice content. Anyway, it’d be appropriate if u can introduce some techniques for beginners to use in open water (lake/sea) and other tips to prevent from drowning in such places.
Sure, i will try to film one day at a lake if i can! Do you swim in the lake?
you have to gain some mileage in the pool. So swimming continuously for 30-45 minutes without placing feet on bottom. This will help to gain confidence in water.Additionally try to use a 2 beat kick and breathing on every other stroke on your favorite side so that you are relaxed. You should also be able to glide with every stroke. It will help to learn a survival breastroke if you get tired whilst swimming freestyle. In open water you have to do sighting to make sure where you going.
I am a beginner swimmer, struggling to breathe while swimming is the main issue I am facing.Trying to learn it through your videos.
Glad you find it useful
Hi, bro good day Very cool 🆒 I like it
Thanks for your nice video. My struggle is my left hand. I feel I cannot have the rotate of left arm similar to the right arm. As the result I move to left rather than straight. If I have a big rotate in my left arm it is quite uncomfortable and painful. I would really appreciate your help.
You should try having a high elbow when your arms recover out of the water. That way is less strenuous to your shoulders
My struggle: I am a beginner swimmer. I was kicking fast lifting my head more for breathing and I was getting tired very quickly. May be after 30 - 35 meters I had to take a break for the next 25 meters. So my trainer introduced me to fins. It was really good. It helped me become comfortable in water. It helped my breathing a lot. Getting tired was completely reduced but with all these good something horrible happened as well. Now without the fins I cannot even move 5 meters. With fins I have no problem at all. Something has gone wrong in my muscle memory. How much hard I try I am unable to kick and move forward without fins. Is there some drill which can help me?
Hi, thanks for sharing. I know what you mean. I introduced fins to one of my adult male students who sank a lot and with the fins he was able to swim freestyle (still struggling to breathe though). I suggest you can build back your muscle memory by doing kicking drills without fins. Just kick on your belly, kick on your sides and kick on your back. It shouldn't take too long and your kicking should improve. Try stretching to add mobility to your ankles. Good luck
The sweetest like from my sister. I wish you good luck, success, happiness, and communication. Thank you❤❤
Thanks so much!
Oh damn. No wonder my legs sink because I look in front. Thank u Joe!! U solved a mysetery for moi
You are welcome
Very very useful tips sir👍🏻. Yes I hv a problem of breathing in freestyle. After few strokes I feel breathless Nd 2nd thing I can breath only from one side.
Pls watch my video about breathing
Sir I struggle in long distance swimming specially I get tired to kick my legs and an issue with my continuously breathing Thankyou so much
For long distance swim try to do a 2-beat kick. That means 2 kicks for every arms cycle
My Struggle is To Keep in Horizontal Position,Arm Pulling, & Timing of The Breath when Turn on the Side! Cheers Mate.
@Average Joe, my struggle is that I have no power when I pull. I think it is because I don't kick hard enough to generate enough momentum?
Having a weak pull has nothing to do with kicking hard. You need to build your pulling strength. Try putting on a pull bouy and don't kick just fully rely on your arms pulling and body rotation. This is a good drill to build your pull
Thanks couch . Breathing is my biggest problem
Great pls practice more
I have been practicing since last three months....but still not able to breathe....in freestyle... I learnt backstroked by watching your video....thnx for that.....

Hello, Thanks a lot. I have problem with breathing. When I breathe, the water goes to my hear and it bother me. Pls give me some Tipps for breathing and fast swimming.
For longtime swimming, kicking from the knee will be easier or Kick from the hip???
Kick from the hip definitely
Any drills for hip rotation during freestyle?
You can use a swimming tool that is invented by Finis. Hip rotation belt
I'm a beginner swimmer and have problems right now with my kick. I try not to bend the knees and head down looking down, but I'm not moving. What can I do to improve my kick? I go slow after pushing off to give me the feel of the water but, always being told to kick faster and still not moving. Please any advice.
Trying to wear a pair of fins. Will improve your kick
🎉
My struggle is turning both side because I too used to turning only on my right, need help on that
You got to practice more on the weaker side to improve the rotation and timing
Hi thank you for your valuable video when I swim freestyle I feel very tired for about 10 meter and I am 66 years old is this because of age?
Age is only a number 😄. Maybe you can improve on your technique in your water so your swim will be more effortless
Any tips on keeping your head in the water and down?
Look at the pool lane on the floor while you swim
I got this pain in my right elbow from frontswim so now I am a bit hesitant to crawl. Although I really want to. Great video. Thanks😊
I'm not getting high elbow and entry recovery. Please do advice....
Try to do the fingers-dragged drill. It may help
My shoulders hurt when my the elbow is already pointing the sky to get back forward. It's hard to reach my arms backward.
Probably need to do some mobility work like stretching
I look down and I can breath fine I just have problem to keep my backend from floating more horizontal
Backend?
Thanks very much coach now what about breathing
Please watch my breathing video

May I have your contact please. Would want to send you the video that I swim so that you can have the advice for me. I have difficulty in breathing. I can run 20, 30km but quickly get tired when swimming. Thanks
Sorry I think you better get a coach to help you
Hello sir. 🙏 My lungs are not so strong, can i swim freestyle like others? I do freestyle, but get tired and breath less within 20 meters. I would appreciate if you'll give advice. Love from India ❤️
Hi, always try with shorter distances. Try 10m first then slowly work your way up
It's harder to produce this channel than swim! 😊
It is....thanks for being so understanding
I am at beginner level and age around 45. It took much time in kicking and now learning hand movement but during that body balance is the issue. How do I improve and also learn hand movement?
You can follow this video. I have explained how the hand movement works. Try wearing a pair of hand paddles too. They might help
I have a defect in my right leg. Can’t bend the light leg fully but I can bend the left leg fully. So while swimming with board and swim with legs u tent to swim at same place. No real moment of right leg
One arm tends to sink downwards when the arm starts to pull backwards. ALSO, I have difficulty turning my head backwards to breathe.
Try to consciously lengthen the leading arm as you pull the other one backwards. As you breathe the leading arm shouldn't drop but stay on the surface
When iam lifting hand for rotation my leg is going down .Pl advise
I think it has to do with your head turning and not your hand that is causing your legs sinking
Breathing : I swim fast but my breathing is not good yet. I catch my breath twice in 30 meter but not fully. Also I strained my shoulder muscle very bad. This has resulted in sore shoulder and surprisingly persistent headache for over 3 weeks now. Also any tip for breathing hasn't worked so far
Try to practice more relax when you are swimming. Shoulder ache could be due to straight arm recovery instead of high elbow recovery
@@Swimtopian thanks a lot. Outside water I know how to relax like deep breathing or observation in present moment. But inside water how do we make ourselves relaxed.
Could you please tell me when to turn the head to breathe.
This is subjective. My preference is when I start pulling and my hand is almost below my chest I will do a quick turn to breathe
What is correct breathing timing?
It depends on individuals. I prefer every 2 strokes 1 breathe but it will be good to do 3 strokes 1 breathe so i can turn both sides.
@@Swimtopian what I mean is, when should I turn my head for breathing? Beginning of pull phase or begining of recovery phase? Still struggling with breathing timing.
@@kyawkyaw087 kzhead.info/sun/o9SSYdCAgJNroYE/bejne.html Check out this video
I am struggling to apply the high elbows and side breathing
Maybe can get a coach to fix your stroke
Hi Sir I am beginner my problem is that as soon as i start moving my hands my kicking stops and i start sinking and then stop in between. What i am doing wrong?
You got to try to do 2 beat kick. As the left hand enters the water the right foot do one kick. And then do the opposite
Hey, a question here. Can a one-legged person swim?
Hi, yes is definitely possible and some take part in the Paralympics too
I struggle with my hand strokes in freestyle. My right hand is powerful but i am not able to do the same with my left...its a bit weak.
You need to do some land exercises to strengthen both arms
kicking, is there such thing that my knee is too rigid?
Knees no but ankles yes
I am a beginner..If feel difficult keeping my head up and swim..
You are not supposed to keep your head up when swimming
Problem with looking down is that you are liable to run into people. The other day I caught up with someone in the same lane and he became incandescent with rage, even though I did not actually touch him. I apologised, but to no avail. Later on I met him in the changing room and tried to make small talk about how many lengths he had done (at least 1500 metres, I would guess) But he wasn't having any of it and was still angry and stormed off, still in a rage.
Some people just take their swimming too seriously. It's ok....at least you apologised. Just move on
@@Swimtopian Not so somple to move on - the guy is there nearly every day and no so easy to avoid. I suspect this is quite common.
As I reach the middle of the pool my feet stops and i get tired, grasp for breath
I hope the middle of the pool is not deep
My upper body and head doesn't come that easily up to take a breath, feel like I am sinking. What should I do?
You need to know how to float parallel to the water surface first
I'm stuck with breathing, I not being able to do the breathing
Pls watch my breathing video
I cant swim follow the line😂, more to the left. I dont know whats the problem. can you tell me sir
Could be many factors. I suggest you get someone to video you then you can analyse yourself

How to swmming Butterfly?
My struggle is breathing, I can’t move my head to the side or clear water from my face . Water enters my mouth almost every time I breathe, also leg sink, I get tired easily. Thanks 🙏
