The locals only feed them for tourists two days a week so that they don't become too dependent on humans for food. Our guide told us the legend about the botos seducing women and that in some versions of the stories the boto wears a stingray as a hat to hide his blow hole.

On special, and restrics, tours some locals (called " Ribeirinhos") have a platform where they invite wild river dolphins to come by to give snacks. And the best is that they do not give enough food to affect their behave, its literally a little amout of food, nothing substantial, but some do come. Complety wild and free, not that Sea World bullshit. i have visited one of these tour and its amazing. • Here in India we have river dolphins as well, in the Ganga and Yamuna river, but they're slowly going extinct due to pollution, overfishing and hunting for superstitious beliefs, and our government isn't doing much to save them.

    • Tell me, what superstitious beliefs are threatening Indian river dolphins? From what I read based on a quick search, beliefs play more of a role in protecting dolphins in north India. Looks like you are an agitator spreading misinformation. If you are not, prove yourself.

  • These critters literally haunt my nightmares and I have eerie vision's of having to swing through a freshwater body of water and get messes up by these guys... The murky water helps to the eerie aspect too...

    • That’s actually a really interesting nightmare (sounds like a scary experience from a subjective standpoint though). I used to have nightmares of being surgically operated on by humanoid pigs with lights while still being awake, and then being chased down dark hallways as I tried to escape the operation.

  • A fun detail regarding the boto folklore legends is that when in human form the boto will wear a hat to hide the blow hole in his had that doesn't go away when shape shifting. Also, a lot of kids are known to be "boto's child", I guess it's pretty obvious why.
