They look like the love child of a cat, otter and a jaguar 😂
Haha they really do!
That was a wiiiiiiiiild night, I've heard that they're still in contact to this day
I think cat/otter is the perfect description of this animal 🤣
I was going to say ferret but taller
I was gonna say a cat and a weasel
My cousin moved to Costa Rica in retirement. She sent me a cell phone photo of an odd short-legged cat that was in her yard. I was thrilled to tell her it was a jaguarundi. She'd never heard of it.
I was also increadibly lucky to see one during my stay in Costa Rica.
Excelente Hope your cousin is not destroying its habitat or killing local wildlife as many expats that pretent to keep their style of life...specially from Yankilandia... Saludos desde Costa Rica
@@kobaltocr6927 FYI I'm the son of a Tico and my cousin was born in Cuba. We have lots of relatives in both countries, among many others. Don't think so ill of everyone, especially those you don't know. ¡Pura vida!
I’ve been watching animal shows literally my whole life and I’ve never heard of a jaguarundi until now💯
so cool and lucky. i think most people living there dont even get to see one in their life
I'm 35 years old man I've been watching national geographic since i was 12, it's amazing that there are still animals on this planet i never heard of😮
Lol we only know 5% of species of this planet 🌍
The arrogance of people is astounding!!!!...
I'm older than you, and I'd never heard of this critter either! 💜
Dude you're just 35 you make it sound like 65...
I’m 99 I never heard of a cat ..
I remember trying to do a report on this animal back in third grade in the early 90's, there was almost no information about them either in books or film, and none of the adults I talked to had heard of them. I came to the point I wasn't certain they were even a real animal.
😂 School for, made you doubt yourself
Back in the 90’s I was 3 years old in western honduras Central America eating Jaguarundi twice a week. I was born and raised in a farm with a lot of chickens Jaguarundi cat just to steal our chickens every single days. My grandpa just hunted this cat with a 22 caliber rifle, he just to wait hidden on a tree for hours until the cat come back for another chicken. Believe it or not jaguarundi is very delicious.
And even now you can see from the video that there doesn't seem to be much footage of them.
@@carlosayala6754 human meat too except i hate brain
@@carlosayala6754 Clearly you were farming the wrong animal then.
I used to use this cat as part of a dichotomous key activity for my classroom of middle-schoolers. They always laughed thinking I said "jaguar undies".
Oooh middle schoolers. I remember teaching at that level many years ago. It was always an adventure.
That's a better name.
Where I live along the Mexican Border, we have a breeding population of Jaguarundis
Great, that's another word I never get to use in class again haha
@@benjones1717 Well, it certainly would garner more interest and donations for conservation efforts. You don't see anybody going after Uranus the way that they went after Pluto.
Its like an otter / cat hybrid, adorable :D
Exactly!🤗❤️🐝
more like mongoose and cat hybrid
@@sangasherpa5063 That too🐝🤗❤️
I was like, "weasel, otter, cat" 🤔
if you look at a Fisher cat that has evolved into an otter like appearance
That cat is prehistoric looking 😮
Update already released but they refuse to reboot to apply it.
I live in south TX. I worked on a small ranch near Choke Canyon St. Park. I and all of my co-workers, as well as the boss man saw these cute critters fairly regularly. We tried to report our sightings but were told in no uncertain terms that jaguarundis no longer lived in this area. They had done a three year study and came up bupkis. And of course you know, those folks are never wrong.
We have the same problem in Virginia when we report mountain lions to the wildlife department. Apparently farmers and Hunters who see mountain lions don't know what they see🙄.
I also live in South Texas by King Ranch and I’ve seen these multiple times lol
Can you set up a trail camera and maybe record a sighting? Sometimes they never spit animals when looking for them but locals know they're there and spot them. The Jaguarandis were probably like, "stranger danger! Hide!" 😅
@@randomuser1596 wow for real? Thats nice to hear i live in south tx and hope to one day see one
Your anecdotal evidence is never wrong either
i'm going to cry... the small ears... the long head... the fluffy tail.... a PERFECT form of animal. i love it so much
surprised you mentioned Tayras or Tolomucos. These animals are extremely under covered by media. they’re like a jungle wolverine!
Cool name!
Never heard of them myself, and glad you pointed that out! now I gotta go find out more
media doesn't want you to know or else the general public might grow more passionate about conservation efforts which they don't want.
Wolverine are way more fierce and lethal
Your videos are a treat for someone like me who live in India and will never get to see such animals in real. Thank you Animalogic.
I remember requesting this episode 8 months ago, happy to see it! Thank you Animalogic 😊
How cool. I'm waiting on an episode on the short-tailed sheerwaters that migrate from Alaska to Phillip Island in Australia. Maybe next breeding season they could go to Phillip Island to film them (budget permitting). They already went there for the Little Penguins video way back.
Jaguarundi is such a cool name for a cool cat Costa Rica wildlife is always surprising!!! PURA VIDA!!!
it's like a jaguar, but, uh... undi
This cat is also in Brazil
Also all over southern USA

Jaguarundi is off the menu! 😵
I remember when I was around 12yo a classmate told us his dad killed a wild cat on the Mountains and invited us to take a look at it on his garage. We went, and it was an Ocelot. Him and his dad were proud of the "catch" and I remember saying "Was he attacking you? Or was it so violent that you feel proud of surviving the fight? Otherwise I'm sure it tried to run away". They looked at me with a bothered look as if I was the "bad one" there. Then my friend's mom came into the garage and scolded them "Finally a boy who isn't an idiot like you two. Poor cat is smaller than our dog and you display it as if you just killed a murderous lion".
Ha, ha! Where are you living that has ocelots in the wild?
@@2degucitas As a child I lived in Mexico near a 4.5km high mountain with its corresponding mountain range that extends all the way to Canada. National Park, so the perfect wilderness for small predators.
humans just love killing things for no reason.
That's an incredible awareness and attitude toward nature in general for a 12 year old! May I ask, what did you go on to study later on, or what do you do now?
=) Proud of you champ. Very proud you!
Never heard of this. Blows my mind that, at 60, there are still amazing animals I've never heard of. Thank you!
In the late 1970s I worked for a company that had printing done at a near by print shop. That print shop had a cat - the men that ran it said it was traditional for print shops to have cats and they had found this kitten around Padre Island. This was one of the oddest looking cats I had ever seen. He was a darkish orange tabby with slightly shorter legs than normal and a much longer than normal body. This cat also pretty much hated everyone. In fact, they told me after I had pet him one day, that I was the first customer they knew about who ever touched him and few ever saw him. In fact, they had seldom been allowed to touch him either. I suspect that this cat might've been a hybrid of a Jaguarundi and a domestic cat. Thankfully they had fixed him and there were no other kittens they knew of.
Ginguarundi
That won't work. Genetically house cats and cougars are very far apart.
omom
Thank you for covering these guys! I'd heard of them but didn't really know anything about them. Staying with obscure South American carnivorans, how about doing Bush Dogs?
Yes,those guys!👍
when I moved to mexico i found out about Jaguarundis they live in my state of Guanajuato and they are endangered and also protected. Once i had a chance to see one in their natural habitat I immediately fell in love with them especially after being suprissed that those small cats actually roar!
I've seen them on game cameras in the southeastern desert mountains of California. It was extremely thrilling to see them. No one else knew what they were.
@@GAVACHO5150 The "game cameras" are located through out the area east of Jacumba and West of Ocotillo, south of Interstate 8 but north of La Rumorosa. The pictures in question were taken over 10 years ago at night with an IR camera. I am not sure if the pictures were saved. I will try to look for them. I work for a certain government agency that uses the cameras to monitor "2 legged fauna" in the area. The cameras are just an amazing perk. There is an amazing variety of wildlife in the desert mountains. The cameras are full of pictures of Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Lions, Wild Horses, Deer, Bobcats, Foxes, and many small almost marsupial looking rodents. I have even seen IR video a pair of black bear crossing Interstate 8 at In-Ko-Pah at the top of the grade. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was quite a sight. Nature finds a way. I have heard rumors from co-workers in Arizona of a lone male jaguar having shown up on their cameras. It's a shame no government agency that is actually dedicated to research and tracking of wildlife does not have access to this amazing wealth of information.
@@rocket5557I'm just now seeing this reply. I deleted my YT comments awhile back but just happened on this video again & was going through the comments & saw this reply. Don't know how I missed it before. I gotcha on the "certain government agency". Being in Imperial Valley all of my life I'm quite accustomed to the green uniforms haha. The bears blow me away. Right there at In-Ko-Pah? Jaguarundi are surprising to me too. While duck hunting one time we saw a Snowy Owl sitting in a Tamarisk (Salt Cedar) tree. Standing under the tree looking up at it no more than 20' up. Saw 2 Common Loons sitting in a concrete reservoir!? There have been multiple Jaguars sighted in southern AZ. I'd like to know what the small marsupial-like animals you guys caught on camera were. And one last thing, I agree about some kind of agency set up to utilize that footage.
I have them on my land in rural Riverside Co California. I've been here 27 years and see them regularly. So they are still here.
Hello Jennifer how's the weather over there
Could you possibly do something on the lesser known African Forest Elephant? Thank you!
They look so much like the Fossa in Madagascar. But that's a mongoose that has convergent evolution adaptations to look feline in their own environmental niche
What a cool cat with an interesting name!
Hello Kim how's the weather over there
May we have a video on the North American Pronghorn?! It is so crazy to see an animal that looks like it is from Africa, running around in Canada!
It's wild how fast they are, too. They make white-tailed deer look like slowpokes.
The fastest land mammal 2nd only to cheeta.
Great episode as usual! I would love an episode on the Binturong. ^^
Fascinating! Never heard of these guys before. Love learning new things!!!! Tyvm!💗
Hello! I watch you from Mexico! Let me tell you, I frequently spend time in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, which is right below McAllen, Texas and I am well acquainted with Jaguarundis in the area. So there is a high chance there still could be a Jaguarundi population in Texas!
yeah
I live in South Eastern Texas, and feel pretty confident I saw one of these a few years ago while camping near a lake!
Do you think the border fence might keep them out though? I despise how that thing cuts apart ecosystems

I think we have one up here in North Texas. I’ve seen him twice by the road. We live in undeveloped farmland and there is a lot of woods and fields. The other day there was a herd of wild boar running across the road. This road isn’t busy it’s usually for people that live further in. It’s a little bit away from the main busy highway.
I saw one of these in the Osa of Costa Rica. Our guide was super excited as he had never seen one even having been raised there and in the rainforest all the time.
Hello Jody how's the weather over there
How can people say that they need to kill them to protect their livestock?? They are the size of your house cat!
IKR, they could instead just protect their livestock better with fences, guard dogs etc.

When the ocelot is away, the jaguarundi will play.
Thanks for that lovely video, such a beautiful cat.
The American cheetah was actually more closely related to pumas than it was to the cheetah.
What a beautiful cat. I hope we can find a way to live with them.
I love that I'm still learning about animals I've never heard of! 💜
Jaguarundi, ocelots and Jaguars are making their way back to the southern most parts of the U.S....trail cams have picked up multiple individuals of each animal..and even a jaguar with cubs
I wish you could draw a picture of my 4 cats. I have 18 year old that is in my picture. A 19 month old Russian blue, a Bombay that I rescued and a English shorthair tabby. I would pay whatever to have a picture drawn by you Danielle of my 4 children. Especially before my 18 year old passes on to the forever fields.
Well, she has a website. Maybe try contacting her there or on Twitter? You never know. But if not...maybe ask for a recommendation for an illustrator, who does offer that kind of service? Better your second choice, then not doing it at all - it's a lovely idea.

I'm from El Salvador and I really love this little feline. It would be great if you could make a video about the 'Cacomixtle' (Bassariscus Astutus) because it is super undercover by media and such a beautiful creature ❤️

Hello Gwen how's the weather over there
My first time seeing or hearing about these cats. They really do resemble weasels.
Jaguarundi wow sounds like a nickname. He is a good friend i think everyone will happy to see him walking around and hunting rat.
I did not know that there really is a Shadow cat, and it was not just the name of a stealth aircraft in an old DOS game I played. Thanks for the info.👍
I was today’s years old when I learned about this cat. Thank you Danielle.
I have seen and interacted with them, they are incredible
The domestic housecat is one of the best hunters I’ve seen 👍. They have the patience , sit very still and are super agile and quick with them claws
What a beautiful tail! I wonder if a hearing aid would increase their hunting success because the ocelot’s ears look like they have an advantage.
I think they can use sight more than ocelots since they're active during the day?
Excellent video! Thanks!
That whole ad on cat DNA analysis and Danielle never tells us what breed/s her cat is? Now I must know. Very gorgeous kitty. Forever requesting a video on the short-tailed sheerwaters that covers their migration. Not only that but the fact that the fledglings then find their own way is just pure birb magic.
Thank you for these videos.
The cat DNA test should be called 23 and meow.
If you gave me a jaguarundi kitten, I bet you 99% that I could raise it to be just like a regular house cat. Homie has the vibes.
