Nice work man. A lot of craftspeople say they make heirloom quality furniture but you are one of the few that actually demonstrates what it means to do that. Sucks about the move again, but I'm sure you will thrive in your new space. Unrelated note, I just got the Festool vacuum clamping (VAC-SYS) set this week, and it is a game changer. Not sure if you have that or see a need for such, but dude, it's one of my new favorite tools in the shop.
Ben, thank you for saying that! Means a lot to be recognized for our craftsmanship. As for the vacuum clamping system.. I have not tried it. It’s one of those things that sounds like it would be amazing for that one time you need it but afterwards it would be collecting dust. Sounds like I’m wrong though? I love trying out new tools. How much was it?
@@WilliamDouglasCo The set of two modules and the pump was about $1400, and the accessory pack of three additional heads was another $400. You could get the single module set (I think about 900) but the accessory heads are a must-have. You will no doubt find all kinds of uses for it once you try it out. There's always the 30 day return for Festool stuff!

Very nice end result! I've made a similar one myself, but it had to be able to be disassembled in order to fit through all the doors and hallways. Hopefully your client has a straight shot into the bedroom! Great work.

I have one of the original series as well and its a core tool for site work (I’m in the middle of a 300 lin foot wainscot job at the moment). I’ve got a Felder slider in the shop so don’t use it when there but I’m dependent on it for site work (wondering about adding an Erica...) and I’m sure you’re aware of Festool’s long lead times for orders. I enjoy your build videos (all your posts but in particular I get ideas from your work - reinforcement for legs in this one). Question, where did you find that little plane for your pencils? @@anthonydtobias I don’t ask those questions 😁 maybe someone els can tell us why it softens the grain.
@@anthonydtobias the alcohol evaporates really quickly. The water takes longer. Mixing the two compromises the characteristics of both. Why does it work? Think of wet paper, it’s weaker. So is wet wood.
My question is why the spline in the leg, won’t the opposing grain directions work against each other? End up splitting the leg right off? Would be curious to see it go through a few season changes. Nice work!
Think about a massive bow tie keeping a check together. The opposing grain should be doing the same thing but doesn’t. I. An think of one specific example of this. I did a 20’ outdoor slab table. It was 40” wide and I had to put in massive bow ties to keep the checks from growing. This was years ago and the bow ties are still holding the slab together. I could be wrong but I think this is similar.
@@WilliamDouglasCo agreed, bow ties work well in slabs and table tops where there is a fair amount of material but in this case you have maybe a 2” wide leg with a 1” wide spline and minimal material on either end, then you have fact that the grain runs perpendicular to the shape of the leg which creates a week spot...very interested to see where this breaks on your test video.

Hey Bruno. My kapex died of old age. I’ve had it for a really long time. I bought it before I had a tablesaw so I used it for my finish cuts. In that case, I do think they Kapex is worth it. I now have a good tablesaw and sled so I don’t use the KAPEX for anything but rough cuts now. In this case it’s cheaper so would have been just fine
what is the milling machine you used to make a mortise called?
Hey Sean! That is called a horizontal mortiser. This one is made by an old company called Inca. Swiss made. Really hard to find.
Lovely really elegant work. However, how strong are the legs? Two people, er being active, could easily mean 170 kg of weight plus additional kinetic energy and rocking stresses....
Hahah we have made several of these and have never had one break yet. I actually want to do some testing soon.

Sorry to hear about you having to move your shop. You've had a few consecutive crappy events lol. Sucks man. On another note... I've never seen that in-lay across the weakened joint due to the grain direction. I'm definitely gonna keep that in my bag of tricks. Where did you learn that one?
Thanks my brotha it definitely has been challenging. I’m hopeful for our future though.. this was just another quick stepping stone. That was just an idea I had off the fly. I ran it by my Crew and everyone said.. “makes sense let’s try it” I want to do some testing on it and make I video that show a pressure test with and without.

@@WilliamDouglasCo I understand lol. I worked for 6 years of testing to be able to build a thin, stable, more water resistant end grain cutting board that doesn't expand or contract with moisture. I dumped maybe 100k total, and maybe 1000 hours over that 6 years into it. Failed many many times. Eventually I got it tho! And now I have a patent pending on it. I consider myself to be a "wood scientist". And with that territory comes a whole bunch of failure lol. But every time it failed I tweeked it a little bit and kept at it. Don't worry about the failures brother. Just keep adjusting it and letting it settle in the brain and jump back in the fire! I think that joint will work, man. Even if you gotta modify the placement of it and gotta extend it out or change it's shape or something.

Oh fuuuuck. I just commented on the new shop tour video a minute ago. At least moving doesn't take a ton of time and $$$... That is rough. I do have a couple questions from the build. What is the 50/50 alcohol water mix for? Did the legs go on with glue or are they just riding on those 3 dominos?
Yeah the move almost killed us but instead it made us stronger 💪🏻 The 50/50 solution softens the grain making it easier to pare the end grain. The joint is glued and clamped up, not just dominos

@@carlosvalentine4939 it depends on what you are doing with it. It had a good run for us. When I bought it I didn’t have a tablesaw yet and I was using it for finish cuts. Now that I have a good tablesaw and sled I only use it for rough cuts. That being said, I could have probably went with a much cheaper miter saw and been just as happy
Did you at least receive an early cancellation fee or reimbursement for the cost you incurred to move in a setup from your landlord?
We had no lease agreement. The deal was that he would eventually need the space but had no idea when so we kept it open. We were both thinking it would’ve been a few years but it ended up being six months

Josh! That is a great question. That is an experiment that I’m doing, and I plan on having another video soon talking about why I did that. Basically the green being horizontal the entire length of the board makes four week points at the top of the feet. I have made several of these beds and I’ve never had an issue, but the concern is always there. This was an attempt to strengthen the structure of the legs by adding vertical grain going against the horizontal grain. If that doesn’t make sense I will definitely do a better job explaining it in the upcoming video.

@@WilliamDouglasCo Not using push blocks when using the jointer and having his fingers dangerously close to the spindle..! Then to do the very same thing on the table saw! It is a matter of time till that dude sticks his finger where it shouldn’t be. Given the time you take for perfection of fit up, the cleanliness of your shop(s), I was surprised to see such careless wood shop techniques.
@@patrickgreen9747 probably should be wearing hearing protection and respiratory protection as well. Long term damage to lungs and ears can be bad later in life.

I had a shop in my backyard before this shop. Had a good thing going until an ass hole Neighbor moved in behind us and got me shut down.
