Lyrics:
Well, I guess I'm trying to be nonchalant about it
And I'm going to extremes to prove I'm fine without you
But in reality, I'm slowly losing my mind
Underneath the guise of smile, gradually I'm dying inside
Friends ask me how I feel and I lie convincingly
'Cause I don't want to reveal the fact that I'm suffering
So I wear my disguise 'til I go home at night
Then turn down all the lights and then I breakdown and cry

Some of yall just don't understand how EPIC this collab was back in the 90s 👏👏👏 just pure GOLD 😁
You ain't never lied
Mariah was doing r&b and hiphop/rap collaborations before it became the norm. She was way ahead of her time
Makes me appreciate Stevie J even more🌋

🤩😍💯✌🌻🥰💖😎
Eazy E definitely knew what he was doing when he discovered bone thugs. He only had 1 year to put them on before his passing. RIP Eazy. Bone thugs definitely took hip hop to another level.
I’m always shocked they’re not bigger… it’ll happen

They won't run out of content for sure
This song is criminally underrated! The chorus goes so hard.
@Tim Dewano this. They played the hell out of this when it came out lol
T This song wasnt underrated
Frl, it deserved much more success.
Yes I remember when this song came out and I was so amazed and awe struck and it’s depth and lyrics; the beat still stands today.

Thats my part 2..
I never noticed that before! I think it totally does.
The music video is iconic too, casino, other musicians in roles and the cabaret dancers style outfit in the dancers
This is perfect comment. Sublime singing style
Wow I never thought of it that way I love that…. Alicia Keyes reverently re did Fallin live and how she desricbed her background signers as their littelry fallin as their singing it
12 yr old me never knew how relevant this song would become to me when I became an adult. Still one of my top songs from Mariah 💖
I can relate. I didn’t know the meaning of the song when I was young, but this time when I listen to this song again, I'm the one in the song.
Yes 100% agree. May not have understood the meaning back when I was young, like you, listening to her around 10 or 12 years old. I just always loved her voice. But I sure can appreciate and relate to many of her songs & this one is easily in my top 5 faves. My All is up there as well.🩵⚘️

LO-KEY, she singing, BUT she 'singing' like she rapping. SHE "FLOWIN" like a rapper, & it sounds natural/easy to her. She really killed this. Bone Thugs too👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Before Beyonce
Krayzie bone taught her how to sing that way. Its a bone song but she did her Thang though
@@broughammoore6168 No, he didn't she just modeled her vocal delivery after their flow.

they inspired her, their style, when writing it, and after writing and recording it, they somewhat reluctantly agreed to do it, and they have talked about how she served them weed and Henny on silver platters. I know everything about Mariah Carey. I've been a Mariah stan since 1995.
Singing in a rapper's cadence. Lord she's beyond brilliant.
🙌🏼this comment soooo true 🤞🏽
Her and Krayzie Bone have another song together called I still Believe. Kray also has songs harmonozing with Michael Jackson and Sade. Dude is so underrated and so versatile. He can hop on any track of any style and stand out.
She is totally underrated as a writer and composer. 99% of the time she writes her own songs and the music to them.
This would hit in this era
My favorite Mc song. She writes most of her own songs 🎵 😅
Mariah a genius. Bone Thug's Crossroads was the song that took the top spot from her Always Be My Baby song. She then collaborated with them for Breakdown. Listen to the beat, it's very similar to Crossroads (brilliant idea). She then copied Bone's flow in this song to match theirs and totally killed it. I remember my gf at the time listen to Mariah, and as a young teenage male, we didn't listen to Mariah Carey lol. Then this song came on and all I listened to everyday was this song lol
Bone and mariah is a masterpiece together
The flow of this song is STILL UNMATCHED. Mariah Carey is TIMELESS.
I slept on late 90s Mariah. I didn't recognize her 'flow' until The Emancipation of Mimi.
@Tatt Bass hate much
Mariah + Bone Thugs...you didn't even mention Krayzie and Wish Bone.
Mariah is known for her high notes, but these midtempo songs is really her voice shines.
Absolutely agree 💯
Some singers can also sing whistle notes, but nobody can sing like this!! Personally I think this is the most iconic Mariah's voice

I'll never forget the moment this album was stamped into my core memory. It was 2002 and I was around 8 or 9 years old. I was on a trip with my Grandmother and cousin, picking up fabric in NYC. This album was already a few years old at the time, so my mother didn't mind that I took it on the trip with me. I remember looking up at the sky and seeing the cranes still cleaning debris from 9/11. The whole time I shuffled through Breakdown, The Roof and 4th of July. It was an incredible experience. Now I'm 30 years old, living in NYC and occasionally I put my headphones on and look up at the sky, just as I did when I was a child

Mariah didn't write this Jermaine Dupri did .
+Jocosta Raynor Mariah wrote this by herself, Jermaine doesn't even have a writing credit on this song. It's only Mariah, Wish Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Stevie J. Wish and Krayzie wrote their own parts and Mariah wrote the rest. The only reason Stevie J is listed is because he probably changed a word or two so it would fit better after production. Mariah always writes her own songs (by herself most of the time) and her co writers really don't do much other than slightly edit it.
Speak on it

Her record label stifled her singles and promotion during this period of her career and yet this song, the whole album, is a testament of the genius of this woman, ahead of her time.
Tommy was still bitter about the divorce but this album still sold even though he tried everything to sabotage her sales to make her cower under his wrath. That's a testament to how strong of a person Mariah is to be able to escape a person like Tommy, who basically controlled every aspect of her life.

the level of excellence with which these lyrics are written is amazing
Mariah's 90s and early 2000s work was the gold standard. No one has replicated her work.
It's virtually impossible...sure there are other artists out there with real talent, but MC is beyond incomparable
Is** the gold standard. So many people still study the hell out of her voice and overall work today. And she's the one that the younger generations get compared to the most. Their fan bases try to diss her and say she's no longer great or a skilled vocalist. The reality is that Mariah is their fav's fav and their fav will NEVER reach such levels (strictly speaking music). Also, you can't take away greatness or legendary status, and one must never undermine one of the world's greatest musicians (not just a singer). Her highly acclaimed "Caution" album is up there with the work of the popular girls today but of course, the effects of ageism and lack of label push made it underperform. The fact that she can still explore and transform her sound time and time again proves her greatness.
Aside from her obvious skill in range and technique and feeling, her voice and tone are entirely unique. Some singers sing like other singers, but really no one's voice sounds like hers. Like when you here her it's always unmistakably her and no one else. Even her speaking voice is distinct.
Good

This was the time when all the heavy hitters made good music. There wasn't one or two people that had a couple hits out. This is when you could turn your radio on and hear good music back to back. And we had fun and you could be in love for real,Hell you might hear a song or two about it. Lol Miss it!!!!!
I agree 1000% with ya, just turn on the radio and its good now its all kinda (runnin outta ideas) on the t.v and radios. I miss the old days!
Kim Wright I know what you mean. I could turn on my radio and listen to it for Hours back then... Now I can only listen to one song before I have to turn off the pollution. Today's music is garbage for the exception of a few musicians.
Kim Wright People were calling the music of this period garbage and claiming earlier decades were far better too. Nostalgia does that
InterestingName The greatest decades of music were the 70's and the 90's. This music today is pure trash.
Willaw Entertainment to you. Cant you be respectful towards others tastes? Remember when you were young trash talking about how straight minded are the olders... now you act exactly the same way
