This version of Fantasy should be registered in US library of congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Mariah risked her career when this dropped and both Mariah and ODB single-handedly bridged the gap between gansta rap and pop with this. Today it's common for rappers and pop singers to collab, but back in 1995 this was unheard of. Yes Mary J did this a few years back and even Janet Jackson and Heavy D collab'ed in Alright before that...but Mariah was the #1 female artist during this time with a distinct pop/safe sound, and ODB/Wutang was on the COMPLETE other side of the music spectrum most Americans hated then. So for them to do this to a mainstream audience was a risk that significantly paid off! I'd go as far to say in anything Mariah's done in her career, this remix left the most impact. This and "All I want for Christmas..."
Wu-Tang is the best!
NO, SHE DIDN'T RISK HER CAREER.

People don’t even know that Mariah actually risked her career to put this song out and bridge the gap between pop and rap. She’s a pioneer. & She did this without her label’s approval. They were heavily against this collaboration. This is why I respect Mariah so much as not only a singer but a true artist. I’ve always had extra respect for artists who write their own music, especially when the music is in-depth, of substance, and meaningful. She has 18 number 1s and wrote 17 of them. She’s really a one in a million. Unmatched as far as a female r&b/ pop artists go. Zero competition if you include: amount of number 1s, amount of records sold, writing your OWN music, vocal range, and longevity.

I remember when a lot of people were unhappy because MC changed her music style (i.e. including rappers in her songs, etc.). This song is historic because it is the start of the rap-pop collaboration format that is being used by nearly every singer today. She really was ahead of her time and doesn't get much credit for it. If people would just look past her diva personality, they would see what a brilliant person she is. Not only is she one of the greatest singers ever, she's an extremely talented songwriter and also producer.

Well as sad as it is and as disgusting as the truth maybe, it could have something to do with her being mixed races, you got to remember that this was back in the 80s when she came out and when she was in the biggest spotlight, and in no way shape or form am I saying it is okay or understandable, I'm just saying this may be the reason why they did her the way they did her, racism is still alive and well in our country even in the year 2021 so 30 and 40 years ago, just think of how much worse it was! I witnessed it personally and I am a white person but always had Black and Hispanic friends, my city is racially diverse and actually pretty segregated but I always made friends with everyone regardless of color or racial background or neighborhood, and I've seen a whole lot of dirty shit go down even in the late 80s and early to mid-90s it was disgusting still the way they we're treating blacks and Hispanics and even Asians and Middle Eastern people, and definitely frowned upon white folks hanging out around or mixing in with them oh, I took quite a few ass whooping behind that and and proud to admit that I would happily go through every one of those ass-whooping again and then some! I can't stand racist people
Some history for ya'll who don't know, or need to be reminded about why this song (and Mariah Carey) are so incredibly iconic: Rappers and Pop stars? In 2016, such a notion doesn’t seemed too far-fetched, right? In fact it's the freakin' norm. But in 1995, this was damn near scandalous. When Mariah wanted to get Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan to feature on Fantasy, her label (Sony) and her husband at the time (Tommy Mottola, Sony Exec.), both gagged. But somehow they let it happen. However, fans of R&B, hip-hop and the like were floored. Never before had the genre (hip-hop) been embraced in such a big way by a “pop star.” And that very September, Mariah Carey forever changed the face of “pop music.” It’s true, she didn’t invent the rap/sung collaboration, but she definitely pioneered it and made it mainstream. She made it work and it was an undeniable hit. Fantasy was #1 everywhere, on every chart, and became the first song by a female artist to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it spent 8 consecutive weeks. So before there was Beyonce & Jay-Z, Rihanna & Drake, Taylor & Kendrick, Jlo & Pitbull or Katy & Juicy J, there was Mariah featuring O.D.B - You're welcome. There is now a category at the Grammy Awards (the first of which Mariah should have won) for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration - You're welcome Grammys. So pervasive is this style of music now that pop stars often release rapper-assisted singles (Rihanna) to increase their chances of a hit. So next time you say or think that Mariah is trying to "stay relevant" by collaborating with rappers, just remember - she was first.
thank you for posting that. Viewer's opinions are one thing, but the facts are the truth. she did make this mainstream! Young people don't realize that just 15-20 years ago music was extremely genre divided and driven. Genre's are basically obsolete now. You can't classify a lot of artists anymore. I think it's fantastic! :)
yes....yes......let these bitches sitdown and know who they are dealing with. MC is the Queen!
Well Said! Sad now how people don't even know where stuff came from musically anymore. They just assume it was always that way

+Zai Singson nice
yes of course💙
+Zai Singson No she didn't. Mariah was merely following the trend of R&B and hip hop being fused together that was already occuring. Although she may've been the most successful doesn't mean she was the first to introduce it.
i didnt say she invented it. i said she made it commercially viable and set the trend for the future duh
How could she make it commercially viable when it was already commercially viable. LOL I suggest you look at the billboard charts in 94 and 95 before Mariah changed up her style on the Daydream album. For example, TLC's hybrid of hip hop soul/R&B/pop second album "CrazySexyCool" was already one of the best selling albums a year prior to Daydream with two Number 1 singles. Quit falling victim to big man history or in this case big woman history and summarizing a trend of events that were already happening within R&B and Hip Hop to one single moment in time that you've arbitrarily given to Mariah.

Mariah made history here. She started the singer-rapper feature trend. You go Mimi.
Not exactly true, it has been happening since 1979.
Well she popularised it then
enchantyy M You get what i'm sayng, that's why i called it a trend. I know that before this there were rap songs featuring singers and vice-versa, but the rap bridge on a pop song that almost all female pop singers do, became really popular after this.
She may not have been the first but she had the pull to bring the two genres together and accumulated the kind of interest not yet seen. Fans of pop music came from all races, rnb was predominantly appreciated by non whites, Mariah brought a lot of white fans over from pop and exposed them to music like Bone Thugs and Harmony, Old Dirty Bastard that they most likely would never have listened to. It doesn't mean shit today but it did back then, she was the one that made people sit up and take notice, that there was something awesome about blending those genres which has alot to do with why so many people do it now. She never gets enough credit for it but well her fans know and I'm sure she's happy with that.

When she separated from her husband (head of the record label) , she released one of the best R&B albums ever (Butterfly) and everyone was shook because of how she dressed, her hip-hop collabs and heavy r&b music. They sure are! FACTS!
To spite her label and all the nay sayers, she went for the rapper with the most unpleasant name. It was still a hit.
I remember hearing this song as a 93 baby, moms pulling in to a theme park I can’t remember.. I just knew it would be a great day. I MISS THE 90’S ❤

It's crazy to think that Mariah's 1995 outfit is a 2020 look.
Even rollerblades are making a comeback lol
Keep all your clothes. They come back around.
Every "fashion time clothes" (1970's 1990's...) come back in the "future"/present day
Fashion recycles. Trends are only trends because people think others think its cool. Except your parents 😂
I m waiting for the day baggy jeans come back
Rest With God O.D.B.

Mariah was not only a gifted singer and songwriter. But she makes art, and was not afraid of doing things that were not popular, but she made it popular afterwards.

Mariah changed the whole music history with this track. Such a shame that no one recongizes how she paved the way for everything we listen to now. LEGENDARY.
