Black Belt Speech | Lex Fridman

2018 ж. 10 Қар.

I got my BJJ black belt yesterday from Phil Migliarese and Ricardo Migliarese at Balance Studios after 9 years of hard training and competing. I've learned more about life from martial arts than any other endeavor I've undertaken. The biggest lesson is that I'm not special, far from it, and that to get better at anything, you have to work hard. There are no shortcuts.

  • " learned more about life on these mats than I have at all my years in school." Man that's a good statement and so true. I come from a background in wrestling starting at age 5 and eventually becoming a 2x all american in college. All that hard work, defeats and suffering built me as a person more than years of school and college education. The human spirit needs tough grueling physical challenges to develop to its maximum potential I truly believe that. Sadly, I think too many people dont understand how important doing difficult psychical things is and they miss an opportunity to better their personhood.

    • Very well said. I only discovered Lex Fridman this week after his AGI discussions justifiably blew up the nerdier corners of the Internet. The admirable traits you describe -- transcending aggression, and his embrace of the "beauty of being ordinary" (as you eloquently put it) -- are evident in his podcasts. They are produced without ego -- it's not about him, it's about his guests and their ideas. He never asks "gotcha" questions, and eschews the typical "point/counterpoint" of click-baity internet debates in favor of nuanced conversations that go where they need to go, and take as long as they need to take. I like this guy.

  • It’s heartbreaking to lose and the best advice anyone gave to me was, ‘If you’re a yellow belt, concentrate on being the best yellow belt out here and so on until you reach Dan grade.” It helped me, because competition was so hard, you’d cry in private if it didn’t go well. But Lex is correct, for I too learned more than just how to fight in the dojo.

  • Didn’t realize you were also a practitioner, and a BB, respect 👊. It’s beautiful how BJJ mixes the mental and physical, bringing the practitioner to almost a spiritual and ruthlessly objective middle.

Felt like he was force to give talks or something by his tone of voice, then 8 months later i've seen more personal achievements and more credibility and validity than i've seen in anyone one else (for the most part). Amazing dude keep it up
