  • I was one of Rorion's very early students when he was teaching out of his garage in Redondo Beach, Ca. I studied with them starting at age 44 until age 51. I witnessed the early struggles and many challenges to fight he faced. Then his younger brother, Royce who I believe was 17 at the time, joined Rorion. I was proud to have sparred with Helio and to have met him was a great honor for me. To say I love this family is almost not good enough. They all have worked so hard, not for personal honor or glory, but to the honor of their father and the development of an incredible martial art form, designed to help the weaker members of society to protect themselves. It has always been about the art for them. Rickson is a prime example of this. He has been an incredible representative of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and I was proud to have known him and work with him as well. This is an honor he truly deserves. I can understand his wanting standards for each degree of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It demonstrates again his dedication to the art that he felt he was somehow undeserving. But he truly does deserve this honor. May God bless all the Gracie family. I am 80 years old now and living in an area where accredited Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is not available. Back problems for years have prevented further study of this incredible martial art. But the Gracie family will always be a wonderful part of my life and on occasion, I stay in touch with Rorion. I have a signed book by Helio which I proudly display and cherish. The sons and daughters of the Gracies will carry on the incredible contributions made to our country by Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and to the martial arts world. May God bless them always. Congratulations, Rickson you are most deserving of this incredible honor.

    • @@spytown77hank you for your response. In reading the many posts below, I find it incredible that some think that Rickson should not be a red belt. They obviously have not worked out with him and/or know his history. He is a Master at his craft and a true gentleman. When I sparred with him, it was like sparring with an electric wire, you could just feel the energy and strength in him. He was all about teaching Gracie Jiu Jitsu and furthering the art form as most of the Gracie's are. They let you practice on them rather, as some other art forms do, beat up on the student. In their classes the student beats up on the teacher. They are sticklers on technique and their teaching methods result in exceptional muscle memory. After approximately 1 1/2 yrs, I injured my back while studying and had to lay off for 9 months. On my first day back, Rorion told me he was just going to go quickly through all of the attacks against me that I had learned in the year and a half I had studied to see how much I retained and whether my responses were rapid or whether I had to pause and think. I had nearly a 90% retention and 85% were rapid responses. Their training methods are really designed to elicit proper responses to multiple attacks from a variety of angles. I was truly amazed that day. Rorion was very pleased but I'm sure I did just what he expected because of their teaching methods. Have a great New Year spytown77!!

    • No, there are some out there, but only because of his age. Most people follow or believe that Carlos Gracie, Jr.'s IBJJF time-in-grade requirement of having been a black belt at least 48 years and being a minimum of 67 years old is the earliest you can get your ninth degree red belt. However, what most people forget or don't know is that Helio never followed or cared for the IBJJF guidelines and neither does his side of the family. It's much shorter under theirs. Not sure, how Rickson does it, but if you look at current photos of him he still refuses to wear his red belt. So who knows when he'll finally wear it on a regular basis.

  • Rickson is a special human being. I think he truly wants jiu jitsu to be consistent, honorable and moral. Now anybody who trains or is a fan of jiu jitsu knows Rickson’s accomplishments and how he lives his life and would make no argument about him receiving his belt. The plain fact that he takes a humongous personal milestone to try and bring improvement to bjj structure, integrity and consistency ironically illustrates how clearly he deserves his coral belt. A living legend and definition of what a warrior is and should be is Rickson Gracie.

Your entire life's passion culminating in this ceremony. It means so much, it takes so much. No one can ever just be given a red belt. You have to earn that. And it's never, ever gonna be easy. And it's never gonna come fast. You have to dedicate your life to this, for so long. Seeing this brings me so much joy man. I hope i live long enough to earn this belt myself.
