My friend was neighbors with the Fletchers in Capo in 1983. One day we were playing outside and Nathan was outside by himself with his skateboard. He was arranging scrap pieces of plywood and 2x4 so they were propped up on the curb, making a little embankment. The street was on a little hill. He was skating up the plywood like it was a wave. He was younger than us and we were 8. Freakin gnarly for a little kid to be doing back then... I knew about his family at the time by just being a kid in Capo. Much love and respect to their fam.
Not just incredible prowess on the surfboard, it's imperative you be a world class swimmer as well to survive in these ocean conditions and a break this gnarly...they don't make every wave. Awesome.

Hey Dan, Love the idea for this video! I will say though as someone living on the sunny coast that Boiling Pot is not an intermediate friendly wave when there's a bit of size, it gets super fast, hollow and there's a huge sweep which runs our next too the wave.

And every surfer who has ever surfed this wave and every barrel they came out of owes it all to a white boy from Kauai named Laird Hamilton so in a perfect world which we all no it’s not but if it was and I was in charge every time someone took off and got buried inside of it and made it out, they should and would be required to send Laird Hamilton one dollar just one dollar you guys that ain’t shit you all no how much it cost to get there and how expensive things are when you get there, not a person on this earth would even entertain trying to surf Teaphoo before Laird went out being pulled into that mental wave by a North Shore Lifeguard legend Keone Downing I think I screwed the spelling of his name up bad, but with all due respect not even the local boys from Tahiti had the balls to take off, one thing is a fact it’s in there blood people that were born and raised in the Hawaiian islands got what it takes.
Such a weak explanation of localism. Vandalism, violence, harassment with the aim of keeping outsiders away, not for "keeping order," "giving groms an opportunity to surf," or "preventing injury." Not to mention the high degree of privilege that comes with being able to live at premier surf spots. It's rich men being bullies. This was a BS rationalization of bad behavior. I've seen a few instances of locals being instructional or making an honest attempt to keep order, but mostly it's just bullying and pack mentality.
There’s no fairness police in surfing… basically skills, testosterone, luck, and knowing the right people determines who gets waves. People protecting a resource (konohiki) don’t care how much money u make or where where u came from, they care about the resource and people in their ohana.
