HOW FAR CAN YOU PUSH A TWIN FIN l WILLIAM ALIOTTI

We Love Twin Fins Out Here in the Mentawais.
We've always wondered how far you can push a twin but also with the right surfer, if you could be an advantage with only 2 fins underneath your feet. We brought out William Aliotti for a month and had the 4 shapers we feel are driving Twin Fin performance make him a 2 board quiver specifically made for Mentawai Perfection. The results left us wondering if we've been riding the wrong equipment for years. - All Day Ray

  • The twinfin conversation is so fun because it challenges the dogma that there’s a “right way” to ride, and not rather preferences for drawing certain lines. I wouldn’t want to tell JJF that he doesn’t need a thruster, or say that Andy Irons was riding the wrong fins. But there’s a lot of groms, and honestly girls, that are being told they HAVE to ride certain equipment to be good at surfing. How liberating to know that the topic has much more nuisance and personal feeling involved!

    • So true. The dogma (from some) that specific equipment is necessary is very anti-surfing in my opinion. Ride what you want, it's so much more exciting to see various boards in the water.

  • I just love my Fishbeard and use it around 90% of the time in almost any kind of waves and conditions, but watching William surfing on these Twins is just magic. The bad side of this video is my level of "kookness" and the excuses I make missing barrels and turns then blaming being on a twin fin, LOL.

  • So cool! It's really nice to see someone dedicate himself to twinfins as William does. And proving them right in heavy surf. I myself have been riding pretty much exclusively twinfins since 2012, in all sizes of surf. Tasted it and got hooked forever: fish, twinpin, mid twin... That's my quiver now. Tried to surf a couple of times on thrusters and hated it. Good bye and good riddance, three fins! The speed you get from takeoff, the projection you get out of every bottom turn or the speed you get on turns have no match. Hail the Twin!

    @pteronadon@pteronadon10 ай бұрын
    • I‘ve only surfed thrusters so far, and ordered the Pukas Lady Twin (mid-length), I‘m so stoked to take it out on the point-breaks where I live this autumn/winter !!! Who knows what happens to the thrusters :P

    • Bro great comment! I’ve been riding twin +1’s for a while and love them. I am contemplating getting a dedicated twin. I’m a little nervous because in the past I’ve felt riding only twin felt too loose but then I’ve never rode a board specifically designed to be ridden as a twin. I’m about to jump two feet in! Looking at the El Tomo twin. Last call as FireWire says it will no longer be in production.

      @splocal@splocal6 ай бұрын
    • Man I tried my first twin fin in 2021, got super hooked on the glide and speed but i've found out the best thing is 2+1 on a thruster fin placement board. I have tried also 2+2trailers and they go really well. I love twin fins but sometimes when you get too stoked mid turn and push they slide

      @mcmcmc1@mcmcmc15 ай бұрын
  • This is an old conversation. If you like the turning ability of the twins fin without it loosing grip try 2 FCS Kelly Slater back fins as the outside fins and the smallest FCS back fin you can get in a thruster configuration ! Your surfing experience will change forever. PROMISE 🤪🤩🤟

  • When I was younger I chopped over half of the middle fin of my board of and sanded it down. This was before removable fins in the 90s. At first it slid to easily but after a few times with it I loved it. Could surf waves well overhead and hollow to smaller waves. I forgot about that board until this reminded me of it. I think I still have it in my garage. Super beat up now though.

  • Way way back in the dayz I rode the Aipa stinger. 6’0 beveled rails long single fin box ,, it was the first step to loose skate style and good fun! Than I got my hands on a 5’9 TnC Twin fin shaped by Glen Minami , it excelled my small wave surfing in leaps and bounds. 360s whenever you wanted n fast as fk! The ONLY thing is it out ran the tube ! If you rail 2rail surfed it it was magic but ONLY , in the pocket, out on the flats you better cut back or it’s pretty much over When Simon Anderson first launched the thruster it changed the face of surfing, hence I could do whatever the fk I wanted and Deep tube rides, full control , never looked back , but the TWIN was good fun!!! Thanks for the video bruh! Brings back some insane times 😂

    • In the beginning he suggests the Happy twin being his favorite @3:10? These are all great boards but theres lots not on the list...hundreds of other quality shapers out there- one example being the alpha omega from the Campbell brothers. Also, something to consider is how different some of these are such as the pin tail of the twin pin which actually has a V in the tail on the bottom which kinda acts as a third fin. I dont think there is one single best twin fin. Best to have a quiver of some :)
