Hey everyone!
Here is some footage of a little test i have been wanting to do, comparing how these two very different, yet very capable off-roaders will handle some big off-sets, that will flex out their suspension.
If you want to see the first test we did, of a bunch of other 4x4's here's a link for that:

  • I think the Unimog gets through the test track quicker, the higher ground clearance and greater torsional freedom gives it a visible advantage over the Hummer, which has to balance everything with the chassis. On the other hand, the Hummer is more stable, which is also due to the lower center of gravity. Definitely an interesting comparison.

  • I think, they're not comparable. When the HMMWV comes to its limits, the Unimog just begins. HMMWV has less ground clearance, smaller wheels, less profile on the wheels and flexes less. The HMMWV sits earlier on hills because of its long wheel base. The HMMWV isn't bad, but the Unimog has the traction of a farm tractor. And you can get agriculture tires for it. The best what you can get for dirt tracks.

    • @@nirfz I'v though Unimogs were incredibly cool since I first saw one at 13 years old and still do at 52. If you are just offloading the Pinzgauer is by far the more practical and most likely affordable option between the two. That being said, at this point in my life I would probably prefer a Halflinger for a dedicated offroad toy. Modifying a Japanese 4wd kei truck is interesting too and may be a lot easier to register and insure if you want to drive to the trail head instead of trailering. Of course with the right trailer an Unimog could probably carry a Halflinger and tow the Pinzgauer and kei truck on some fairly gnarly train.

  • I do a ton of serious off roading. I have wheeled with humvees and they excel at two things: water crossings and driving through ruts. I always loved them and wanted one growing up. When I realized how bad they were for general off roading I changed my mind on ever owning one. They are ridiculously complex, seriously under powered, overly wide (and rely on the body as the slide point), and so heavy they sink like a rock. I still love the look of them, but they really suck to wheel. Now the unimog, is a slightly different story. Much bigger tires fit, portal axles, serious suspension flex, seriously strong parts, and better gearing. The main limitations of the unimog is actually poor wheelbase (many of the 406s have such short wheelbases they climb rocks poorly), too heavy, lack of power, and complex driveline. If I had to pick one to off road the mog wins hands down. The fact you can run 44in tires on the axles and not break them will get you places the hummer couldn’t even wi ch itself through lol.

  • They are different vehicles. Nothing can beat clearence and nothing has a Mogs clearence. I drove plenty of Humvees while in the army. The were very capable but were "fragile" they needed a ton of maintenance. The diesel engine is slow and weak. The unimog is a unique vehicle in that its a multipurpose off road contraption that serves as a basis for a myriad of heavy duty purposes. Its rude and crude but does things that no other can do.

  • Great video! Both performed well, though the HMMWV has clearance issues and the UNIMOG seems to demonstrate heavy body roll... Like it was mentioned, testing with a load would be very interesting. I have always thought the HMMWV was way to big a tactical vehicle, which may work well in desert deployment, but size does mater in other tighter terrain. You only have look back at the Willies Jeep and Land Rovers body styles and compare performance. All your videos are very interesting.... Thanks and cheers from Ottawa Canada....

  • Quite an impressive display of each vehicles good and not so good points in this particular test. What really does shine through though is the overall stability of the tray on the rear of the Unimog, basically it remains level until you get to the extreme holes. The main reason for the tray being steady and almost level is the live axles with their approximate 600mm of articulation. The trade off is a slower overall speed on interesting terrain if you really wish to push the vehicles, but everything has a price. If you watch the side camera on the Unimog you can really see the cabin flexing with the front part of the chassis, while the flexible tray mount remains fairly steady as the chassis underneath writhes around like a serpent in a hurry. I have an Isuzu NPS 300 (made in Japan) which is a 7500kg factory 4x4 vehicle (Australia) converted to single wheels (rear duals standard) with a complete suspension change. It too has approximately 600mm of wheel articulation due to live axles. While our tray is spring mounted on four points of each chassis rail for a total of 8 spring mounts, the Isuzu doesn't have quite the same amount of apparent chassis flex as the Unimog. But our chassis certainly flexes, the cabin twists with the front part of the chassis, the axles go up and down like yo yo's while the tray remains basically level; until one gets to the extremes. Our camper is on the back of the truck, permanently bolted to the tray. Our maximum travelling weight is around 6000kg fully fueled and watered, reducing to around 5500kg as fuel and water are used; well within the comfortable rough road range capability of the vehicle and it eats sand dunes for breakfast. I would like to see a future test of some of your vehicles running at approximately 80% of their stated gross vehicle mass. I can tell you from decades of experience once you load a vehicle to its rough road gross vehicle mass, the dynamics really change and I think you may also find it interesting to see just what they are capable of doing when loaded like that.

In the hummveee you can go faster through medium challenge terrain and feel confident you won’t bounce on to your side.

  • Interesting. The IMG, has incredible suspension articulation, but more body roll, the wheels always on the ground, the HV was tricycling through most holes, it progress was more intermittent, as the traction control had to work harder, the rigid frame seemed to provide less body roll. Interesting would be to see them both do the same path loaded. Thanks for this vid. A modern UM may be much improved??

  • You use the front and rear locker, if you drive with the unimog? The hummer h1, has also lockers?

    @olafhugolohm9252@olafhugolohm9252 Жыл бұрын
    • On the unimogs, you usually can't chose between front or rear locker. both will be activated with the same leaver (or knob) and come on and off, together. And for the Humvee/Hummer. the simple awnser is yes. And the complicated awnser is, military Humvee's like this one, do not have "Normal" differentails and lockers. they have "Torsen-Differentials" and that, combined with how the drivetrain is built, means that you can lock-up those differentials, by applying brake pressure, to even the rasistance on both wheels, giving it the effect of locked differentials.

      @KJOff-Road@KJOff-Road Жыл бұрын

  • How does the rear part of the UNIMOG rotate compared to the cab? Is there a mechanism that does fhis, or is it just frame flex?

    @DDDYLN@DDDYLN11 ай бұрын

  • Unimog, but try the Pinzgauer also! It is smal and light, but also has portal axes. It is maybe superior even to the Unimog, which is considered the gold standard. The Hummer also has drinking and reliability issues. Its room concept is ridiculously decadent either, not suited for the European scenario, imho.

  • Solid axles vs all independent suspension. Not a fair comparison either. The Unimog was built as a truck to take logistics, humvee with all independent suspension was designed for better maneuverability for being used both as a light strike vehicles as well as carrying logistics

  • Apple vs Orange. But fun to watch. My 2 cents: For fun, the Unimog. In a battlezone, the Humvee. Lover (harder to spot and a smaller target) and a more stable weapons plattform. Cant imagine shooting a M2 bravo out of the Unimog, let alone 40 mike mike. Did shoot the MG3 out of the Unimog, not pleasant at all.

  • That reminds me of a comparison with a GAZ Tigr, an IVECO, a URAL 4x4 and a HMMWV in winter. The snow was 1 meter deep. The GAZ has no problems with that, neither does the URAL, the IVECO had its difficulties and the HMMWV capitulated after about 10 meters. The design of the front axle turned out to be disadvantageous in deep snow.

  • From a military perspective this is not an easy problem to answer. Both covered the course. The Humvee Had an easier transition overground. It lacks f & r diff locks . That's a very poor failing for drivers to cope with. But marks for making it. Equally the Mog is a cork in a bottle experience that is demanding on passengers, tiring to ride in and not it's sole purpose. More lading will Introduce stability. As ballast. The 411 then as a material transport is very able. It must win for that purpose. The HMV for carrying grunts and their munitions wins on sure footed ability and comfort. It lacks technical components however that is a fatal embarrassment should it get stuck at a regroup manoeuvre. I've seen it get screwed over during turn around in modern theatres becoming a target for enemy fire. The Merc isn't in that field of purpose. Not really a patrol vehicle. It's a logistics vehicle. One I prefer over the APC on rubber.
