The conditioning in tennis now is next-level! People talk about MMA/UFC fighters, NBA players, long distance swimmers, but many don't realize just how fit these guys are. A sport where you are considered "old" at 30! The fitness truly manifests itself late in 4 or 5-set matches when, the players are STILL maintaining proper mechanics and technique. For those of you who've never played, go on to a court and hit 20 ground-strokes, 10bh & 10fh, running side-to-side, all while maintaining velocity, depth, and accuracy on your shot! Then try it after 4-5hrs of intensive match-play! These guys are machines!

Sinner reaped the benefits of winning efficiently. Medvedev’s fight was admirable, surviving three 5-setters, coming back from 0-2 down twice. But he also was putting himself in bad positions. He didn’t need to drop sets against Borges and Machac, definitely could’ve closed out Ruusuovori faster too. He paid the price here for not winning efficiently, whereas Sinner ran through Rublev, Khachanov, and Djokovic while only dropping one set total.
Being young was part of it plus training hard.
Now that’s how you win your 1st grand slam. Not giving up and pounding a winner down the line. Awesome job Sinner!! 🎉🎉🎉

I didn’t know Sinner was such a mental beast..even more remarkable at his young age. Knowing you’re capable of playing great tennis and actually able to execute in clutch situations are 2 different things altogether..hats if to Jannik and well deserved AO champ!
He did it step by step and became slowly better unlike Alcaraz. He changed coach last year and half way through you could see already the improvement in his first serve, fitness and mental strength

I watched him playing one or two years ago..and a knew that his prize was close!!!! And he is a young man!!!
Coming back from 2 sets in any round is amazing. To do it in the final was incredible.
I’ve followed Sinner from the very beginning. I’ve always said that he has the game needed to be a champion, but what has changed the most about him and what has brought him over the top (besides the developments in his forehand and serve) is his belief in himself and his complete sense of composure on court. I really think that aspect has come a long way under Darren Cahill. He’s been showing us a champion’s mentality for the past few months, and the only thing that was really missing was the major championship. It was an inevitability and I can’t be any happier for him and his team.
Meddy clearly running on fumes given previous matches, but he still managed to bring some serious energy in the first two sets. Absolutely commendable work, but unfortunately it was not enough. Congrats to Jannik! 🇮🇹
I feel like the outcome would have been different had Medvedev not been so gassed. But that's why a major championship is a marathon, not a sprint. Meddy's performance was commendable. I feel bad for the guy. All that said, Sinner deserves this and he's staking his claim for the top of the men's game right now. What a beast.

Congrats to Sinner. A great player. Have to also say Meddy was unfairly scheduled, exhausted from 5 set late night, early morning matches. Not as fresh as his young rival. Such is tennis snd such is Australian Open scheduling. Must be improved.
Probably one of the best runs in the new era of male tennis. That, along his attitude, his mental strength and overall his demeanor on court makes Sinner probably my favorite new generation player.

Sinner's win vs Djokovic in Australia and Alcaraz's win vs Djokovic in Wimbledon were so meaningful, it's like a change of the guard in men's tennis despite Nole is still a threat for anyone but Jannik & Carlos have already proven themselves in the biggest stages. We'll certainly witness plenty of epic battles and Slam finals between these two in the future, hope their rivalry to last as long as possible. Congrats Sinner, sensational tennis 👏🏻

While he did come out but you also must keep in mind Medvedev was way too tired after mid, end of 3rd set.
The fact that he went straight to his team after the win...And not showing too much attitude or aggression after the win shows a lot of character.... From an Alcaraz fan I see the danger in future games....

Sinner knew that he played way way way fewer sets in the previous 2 weeks than Medvedev, so he knew that Medvedev physical level was going to drop, relatively to Sinner
Battle of attrition, both playing superbly....Sinner had the legs, and that is the way a Grand Slam title match should be played.
Sinner has the total package, an all around game, shot making, athleticism. But what's most impressive is his composure for someone his age--down two sets to come back and win the Australian Open, like wow. It's too early to compare his career trajectory to the Big 3, but he's the real deal.

Feeling so happy for Sinner. Every single tennis fan who have been following tennis for last 3 years will remember this day.
Losing the first two sets probably helped Sinner become less tight so he can actually play his actual aggressive style tennis as well as getting more first serves in because he's got nothin to lose at that point. Med came out swinging harder in the first two sets (higher topspin average than all of his matches in the tournament), but there was no way he could keep that up physically, especially after Sinner loosened up and started firing rockets. Congrats to Sinner for staying strong til the end in all aspects for in his first grand slam final! 🏆

I heard lots of talks about sinner last year and him barely giving good results apart from the canadian masters. After the later part of the season and specially the atp finals we are finally seeing the potential come to terms with the outcome. Hope to see this top 4 rivalry get more intense this year and may this year not only be djokovic, alcaraz and the rest. Well done champ I really liked his personality and composure in the matches. Reminds me so much of Roger though I am a Novak fan Roger's composure was pure class.

What a contrast with yesterday women final where i felt asleep. Only thing that kept waking me up was sabalenka horrible grunts 🤣. Congratulation to Jannik! I'm not gonna lie, I didn't think he would be able to turn this match around after being 2 sets down. Daniil surprised me a lot with his tactic during the first 2 sets where he was so agressive. But what a match from Sinner. What an amazing ball striker he is. He has improved so much since last year. This victory is the 1st of many more to come, as long as he stays healthy.
men's matches have drama, less frequent in women's matches but it does occur. Sabalenka-Gauff was a decent match despite the grunts.
Yep. From the semis and the final, the Gauff v Sabalenka match was the one that enjoyed watching. I don't know if I'm the only one but the only time I watch Sabalenka play is when she's playing someone i want to watch (in this case, it was Coco). Other than that, I rarely watch her match because of her grunts.@@karenv8351

Is that what happened? Looks like it, by seeing this highlight, as I didn't watch the match. Pity if it is true, as it's gonna become a mark of his GS finals, not being able to close out the championship match.

Impressed on the stamina of both... medvedev was doing everything correct. He moved the ball side to side making his opponent "tired" . But basically - he was also getting tired and got tired faster thus giving up the winner in key moments. wow!
You could see the blank look of worry at the end of the 3rd set... He isnt a young gun anymore, and that Hurkacz match was very physical.

beautiful to watch both of these guys...much more pleasing to the viewer than Alcaraz or even Novak. Gorgeous strokes. But Sinner has better odds over time with the one flaw of Medvedev.... Sinner stands right on the baseline, Medvedev is generally a few to several feet behind the baseline hitting the less penetrating looping balls. Sinner hits the flatter ball with the slightly better angles. Basically able to control the match much more than Daniil. What a future this guy has, unbelievable.

Beating djokovic in semis and that at AO means your destiny is fixed.
To end it with his signature blistering down the line forehand shot is so fitting. It took many other shots and tactics for him to get there, but it was so satisfying to see. He has grown so much as a player it's astonishing.
This is the first grand slam I followed live and I'm glad it's won by one of my fav next gen players

Was hoping Sinner will take his first GS. But in the end I wished Medvedev won after witnessing how he fights even when he is out of fuel. Got to respect that.
Sinner has been truly incredible. This AO he beat Khachanov, Rublev, Djokovic, and Medvedev all back to back, and the scary part was all of them were easy matches except Medvedev. Sinner’s killer instinct is incredible; sure he looked nervous early in this match with Medvedev playing the way he was, but he never panicked, never freaked out, and stayed the course. The moment the third set started, Sinner just never looked bothered, never looked in trouble. He played progressively better as the match went on and the fifth set was definitely his best performance. For Medvedev, I feel pretty bad man. He’s had two gut-wrenching AO losses between this one and Nadal in 2022. Both where he led two sets, but was facing an on-fire opponent who was just destined to win that day. No one can tell me Daniil choked this match. Medvedev had one of the boldest game plans I’ve ever seen by playing super offensive in the first two sets; do yall realize how difficult it is to reach a grand slam final and commit to playing an entirely different style that you’re not fully comfortable with? Medvedev did that, and that’s the reason he won 2 sets here. In the end, I think we all knew Sinner would shake off the nerves and prove his offensive tennis is better than Medvedev’s. And that’s what ended up happening; Sinner asserted himself with those huge groundstrokes while Medvedev was driven back into defending. Medvedev definitely started to feel the effects of the long AO run as well; he has now set the record for most time spent on court at a major ever. The man played four 5-setters in 7 matches, came back from 2 sets down twice, and dropped one set in two other matches. He only had one straight set win. This was an amazing feat of endurance and durability from him, and I bet he’ll have a big season this year. The top of the game looks utterly stacked right now. Djokovic will likely bounce back from this loss, especially during clay season. Medvedev looks as strong and tactical as ever. Alcaraz will come roaring back soon and probably peak for RG-Wimbledon. Zverev has had some of the best slam results of his career lately, and of course Sinner looks like he might be the best player in the world if he keeps it up at this pace. Sinner has won his last two against Alcaraz, 3 of his last 4 against Djokovic, 4 in a row against Medvedev. He was won 9 of his last 10 matches against top 5 players. There no longer seems to be a matchup Sinner is scared of, and if there’s a weakness in his current game, I can’t seem to find it…
The weakness of Sinner is his frequent injuries. If he reaches the number 1 spot it would be a short period of time. I dont see him having a long career

@@javierperez9188Nah, in 2023 he barely got injured. Only a minor one during clay season and it probably only affected him a couple weeks (could’ve even just been fatigue). I think his time in the gym has made him more durable, though I don’t think he’s ever gonna be an iron man type player like Medvedev who can play 5 tournaments in a row with zero wear and tear

Not really Sinner was a solid favorite to begin the match and quickly became the favorite again after taking set 3. He did what was expected of him. You can't give him credit for putting himself in a hole and then doing his job. That's like if I give you credit for messing up my order but making up for it by cooking up a great meal.

I'd say Nadal's win over Medvedev was the biggest, considering his age, coming off an injury prone year and getting Covid the month before AO. That was almost 5 and a half hours of grueling tennis that should have favored the younger Medvedev. That was a match.

Finally! I've always preferred Sinner over Alcaraz because of his composure, even though I think Alcaraz is more athletic. This outcome is exactly the evidence for Sinner's mental strength! I'm glad he's now a Grand Slam champion as well!

What a phenomenal comeback! I honestly thought Medvedev would win after the first 2 sets, he was playing lights out tennis. Sinner is proving to he has the stamina to go the distance, the possibilities for him are endless.

"Medvedev had just come off a 5-setter a couple days prior" - At this time, probably best to look at what Stefan Edberg had to endure to get to the final of the 1992 US Open. Then playing Sampras in the final, and Edberg still won. Also, Edberg had an injury lay-off period before the US Open.
Not sure about Alcaraz, but this guy looks to have serious potential, in the same stratosphere as Nole, Nadal and Federer. Would love to see his matches against Nole and Nadal moving forward.
Yup I saw a stat they showed at the end of the semis that Medvedev had play over 21hours of tennis to reach the final where sinner had played a little more than 14 hrs

This is actually a sign of good things to come for Medvedev as he has shown that he can be very difficult to beat if he comes forward. With his incredible wingspan, it is almost impossible to pass him at the net and he is one of the very best volleyers in the ATP tour. The only thing that kept him from doing that till the end of the match is that he was gassed by the start of the third set and the spring from his legs was already gone.
