    • On top of this, Oliver and his writers are also protected by the first ammendment, both on the individual personal level and as members of the "press"(use quotes because this is a comedy show first and a news show second.). Any Judge who doesn't deserve to get removed from the bench will throw such a case out. Although in all likelihood, because these will be corporate lawyers against each other, they'll settle out of court.

The first amendment most definitely does not protect you from libel and the Supreme Court has ruled on that many times.

  • I grew up in a rural community that was built on coal mining. As the mines closed, the community fell on hard times that it never recovered from. There have been talks of re-opening a mine, which many people are in favor of. But there are other ways the government can help communities like mine. Coal is bad for everybody, and mining is incredibly dangerous work. No one actually wants to do it, they simply had no other options. Create better jobs.

  • I was born and raised in West Virginia in a "coal town". Thank you, John Oliver. Neither the President nor coal company CEOs care about the future of miners. Oliver is correct, if they cared, they would be finding ways to bring WV into the future, not keep us in the past. I've always believed this. These jobs have literally killed so many of us, my family, my friends, and Trump took advantage of financial desperation to gain votes. To gain votes and keep CEOs pockets lined with blood money. WV should want better for future generations, not ensure future generations have to stay dependent on a volatile industry for their income as is happening now. WV is truly a beautiful state and has so much potential, I hate to see my state hurting, but it won't move forward until people broaden their perspective.

    • Chastity Boggs Wasn't the coal mining town from October Sky in West Virginia, and it eventually closed down? I was thinking about that throughout this video, and knowing that entire lifestyle and most of a state is lurching toward that fate…

      @astraldirectrix@astraldirectrix6 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, it was. There is also a book written by Homer Hickam, Rocket Boys, I believe it's called. Coal industry jobs have been on the decline for decades. I remember being a kid and hearing adults speak of job loss my entire life, yet many people still don't see the advantages of working towards other options for the state.

      @cboggs413@cboggs4136 жыл бұрын
    • One problem i can see is that its a bit of a daunting task to move from one acupation to another. I would love to see them set up programs where those leaving dying jobs could go back and get college education to allow them to learn and eventually re enter a new market of jobs.

      @williamwatson9781@williamwatson97816 жыл бұрын
    • Wilhelma Watson you're absolutely correct. That's why I believe if people truly cared about the well-being of the miners, their families, etc. they would focus more on programs, education, and the like instead of making promises that everything will be great once a certain person is elected. Many younger people are continuing their education past high school now, but unfortunately struggle to find a job after getting a degree. (I know this is a problem many places though not just WV). That's in part due to population decrease as well. Coal jobs go, no disposable income to support other local non-coal industries/businesses, businesses close and layoff those employees, everyone suffers economically, people get fed-up and move. It's a cycle that will be difficult to break but needs to be done.

      @cboggs413@cboggs4136 жыл бұрын

  • Bob Murray once told my dad in a private meeting that he would have spent 2 million dollars to keep him from winning 1. This was after my dad sued the company for 1.2 million dollars after a high pressure underground roof jack exploded and literally shattered his skull, blinding his right eye, and caused him serious mental problems following. This wasn't an accident by the way, Murray tried to save money by not ordering relief valves that would have saved my dad from the horrific incident. Bob Murray claims to be about safety but would rather see many of his workers die then to loose a dollar. My dad got his skull crushed by an exploding hose that was under 14,000 psi when it gave. This is an openly racist man who once said in a meeting that blacks weren't as smart as whites and said that asians were only good for crunching numbers, and that used to pump water in a circle underground at maple creek mine to keep from getting fined because he knew they couldn't inspect it all. John Oliver, please continue to attack Murray so the world can see what kind of monster he really is. These are actual facts that are traceable! This man once told workers in a meeting how to screw people... he said that "you feed the people sweet corn and then when they trust you, you shove the Cobb up there ass" he actually said that. Hell the man demoted my grandfather after 44 years as superintendent of #6 (not official name but that's what we called it) for insulting his son. Keep up with the Murray insults, but I'm serious... he's the kind of man who would have you murdered. I mean this man once called in the FBI to investigate why one of his buffalo died. (it's a tax right off to own buffalo if you have a certain amount of acreage). Lol turns out one of the males horned the other. He's Evil. “Update” Bob is no longer the CEO of Murray energy, the banks own the company now due to Murray’s bankruptcy. He went bankrupt after his business partner died in a helicopter crash and Murray assumed all his debt. The company is currently being run by Rob Moore (another pos but not as bad as Murray) and his son Ryan who couldn’t find his ass with both hands) one might say that the chickens have come home to roost. “Update again” He’s dead. My dad sent flowers and condolences to his wife, being the bigger person is the ultimate victory.

  • The economic pain felt in coal towns is yet another reason why a universal basic income is necessary. Many miners are inevitably going to need to transition to other jobs, and many of those jobs will require education (whether trade school or college), and obviously the uprooted former miners and their families still need income even while getting that education. And I'm sure many of them still want to stay in their home towns where there still may not be good opportunities even with education. Having a guaranteed amount of income, even if it's small, would greatly ease the struggle for people working in any industry that experiences a shakeup (which has been a lot of industries during the COVID pandemic, not to mention how that guaranteed income would've made it easier for people to stay home early on in the pandemic and probably would've helped keep things a lot more contained).

Atheism (the opiate of Western White males that killed 150 million people in the 20th century alone) is dying out demographically, while at the same time East Europe, Africa, Asia and South America are in the midst of a religious awakening. China alone is projected to go from 80-100 million Christians in 2017 to 700-800 million Christians by the end of the century, if the current conversion rate remains the same. The 21st century will be known as the century where religious persons of color overcame the neo-colonial attributes of White atheists and their faux-Christian brethren.

  • My family worked in coal for nearly a century. We mined coal, turned it into coke, and sold it to steel manufacturers. Any coal we didn't turn into coke was sold to power companies. We left in the 60's because that was when coal was dying. The problem with the coal industry isn't that it is dying, it's that it's dead. Demand for coal in the industrialized world started going down in the 60's when at the same time companies started automating the mining. Now demand for coal is going down in the rest of the world as well so what little demand was left, China mines its own coal, is disappearing. It's sad that all these people are losing their jobs and that states like West Virginia have put all their eggs in one basket with regards to what industries are in them. The question now isn't "how do we get coal jobs back?" It's "how do we provide new jobs for those in the coal industry?"

    • That is exactly what Hillary Clinton tried to tell them. That those jobs were not coming back and that we needed to retrain them into the solar or wind or anything else industries. The Republicans took the first part of that statement and ran with it. The miners thought she was their enemy, they did not hear the whole plan. The miners were screwed after that. And although it is unfortunate, it will also be the reason Trump will go down. When these poor or out of work folks realize that they have been lied to, once again, by a greedy man, that it was all just sweet talk to distract them while he got what he wanted, elected, they are going to turn on him. Much like the guy that whispers how much he loves you to get you into bed, then runs off the next day because he got what he wanted. You will not love him anymore.

You don't sit there moaning that your industry is dead and you want it to be a hundred years ago again.

Yes, phasing out coal _will_ cause dislocation among several communities, and many of them _will not_ be as able to rework their professions on the flip of a hat. Alternatively, pretending that we can keep coal going for years and years will eventually leave all those communities, as well as potentially many more, in deeper holes to dig out of. • If Trump actually cared about jobs like he says he does, he would invest in renewable energy instead of coal. There are a lot more jobs in renewable energy than there are in the fossil fuel industry, not to mention it’s more technologically advanced and better for the climate. Instead he wants to take us back to a time when energy was a lot less efficient because fighting climate change is a “war on coal.” It's insane.

    @thegoat5888@thegoat58886 жыл бұрын

    • These things tend to take time unless there's a quick dismissal, so I expect we'll have to wait. But before watching the episode, I saw a discussion of developments in the case at Lowering the Bar, focusing on the ACLU's amicus curiae brief supporting HBO's opposition to Bob's temporary restraining order request. loweringthebar.net/2017/08/you-cant-sue-people-bob.html The linked article provides Kevin Underhill's commentary, including: `To be honest, any brief that includes a heading like, “Anyone Can Legally Say ‘Eat Shit, Bob!'” is going to get a good review from me. Doesn’t really matter what else it says. But it’s a great brief overall.' Additionally, the full text of both HBO's (less funny) brief and the ACLU's are available there. Not everyone's into legal humour, of course, and by now there may be more recent coverage of the case, but I still find this one well worth a look, though anyone who's seen the episode will know a fair bit of the context provided there. Finally, quoting the commentary quoting the ACLU, just because this is pretty amusing for a brief: `“And with regard to the Dr. Evil remark,” the brief notes at page seven, “it should be remembered that truth is an absolute defense to a claim of defamation.”'

He throws in a giant talking squirrel and makes it comical, but the substance is actually more detailed, and accurate than the "news" agencies claiming to not be just for comic effect. With everyone else, you can clearly see who's paying the bills (e.g. MSNBC = the fracking industry). This may be why the general electorate is no longer smart enough to handle what's going on in an adult manner.

    • Sounds great. A bit lecturey, and elitist, but nevermind. Still, does Lee Camp do a weekly news show on TV? I'm referring to the pathetic nature of being forced to use a "comedy" show as a news source. Edginess, wasn't part of the equation. Journalistic depth and accuracy was.

      @InsertName130@InsertName1306 жыл бұрын
    • By the way, I just checked out Lee Camp. I'll watch more of it. It's good. It's still more of a youtube radio show, than what we're watching here. Nothing wrong with it, but it's a completely unrelated set of criteria, and is more about conversation, than the direct dissemination of information, and journalism. People think that a huge part of the economy is reliant on it and that Obama was single-handedly destroying it through regulations. People think that a huge number of jobs come from coal mining, and many voted for Trump for that reason. I believe more needs to be done to get the word out that coal jobs can't be brought back or even saved for long, and more needs to be done to create jobs for laid off miners.

You can't rely on profits getting bigger and bigger, you have to face the reality that they will only ever be diminishing. Invention and technological boom cannot be predicted. But the oblivious CEOs will continue to believe that their profits will only keep growing and whenever they aren't growing they start to panick.

  • I work at a bar in Texas and my area was filled with Trump supporters who wore their MAGA hats all the time to the bar. After he won but before the inauguration, I continued to see dozens of customers every night wear a MAGA hat and while I was a Clinton supporter, I didn't mind so much since I was willing to wait until after his 1st 100 days to pass judgment on him as President. However, as his 1st 100 days went on, I saw fewer and fewer people wearing MAGA hats in an area that voted for him in large numbers, and the last MAGA hat I saw was around when his 1st 100 days ended. Also, any customers that I know were big time Trump supporters have stopped talking about their support for Trump because of both the scandals that make him look bad and the fact they don't feel he is actually doing anything to help them and America. And if I ever ask them things like "Do you still support President Trump?" or "What has he done that you like so far?" usually the answers are negative now or people just say nothing, which shows that even in areas where Trump won he is still losing support. This is also evident in the fact that in just 5 months, his disapproval rating is at 60%, which very few Presidents ever hit in 4 or even 8 years. Even Bush Jr. didn't lose Texas support this fast, and I know because I was a Bush supporter when he was President (though I was in middle school when he was reelected and not a Democrat supporter until high school). I still want to remain optimistic that things can improve for the U.S. under President Trump (mainly cause I'm still living here) but at this point given what little he has accomplished (that wasn't undoing something President Obama did) I am running out of hope that he can do the things he promised/people voted for him on.

I don't want to imagine a world with Pence as president, I would run to canada, get a flight to Sweden and attempt citizenship.
