Rotation Liquid Mercury generated by a magnetic field

2017 ж. 4 Сәу.

In this experiment the mercury is placed inside a wooden disk and on the sides with two aluminum circles and in the center a circular magnet. When current flows through the aluminum conductor, it generates a magnetic field. This condition causes liquid mercury to rotate as it is a very conductive metal. The working voltage is about 2VDC and a current of 27-28 amps, controlled by an inverter. The speed of rotation of mercury depends on the supplied voltage. As the tension increases, the mercury escapes from the bowl.
* The system does not work in alternating current.
*The white powder is talc, it makes the movement of mercury visible.

  • This is a super cool experiment, and made me think really hard about perspective. The rotation remains the same based on which side of the electromagnetic field you are looking at, assuming the flux lines follow a spherical / torus shape. One side of the field always rotates clockwise, even when it's facing away from you. Neat stuff :b

Spin it fast enough and you compress space time, the usable result of this is the mass of the craft is reduced to the point where you only need very, very low powered thrusters (something akin to the Apollo maneuvering jets) to propel the craft at enormous velocities.

  • You can try to install a large external ring magnet opposite the polarity of the magnet in the center. Then we should expect that the vortex chain, which occurs at 2:58, will become stable and complete. That is, it is necessary to make the outer part and the inner part of the mercury ring move in opposite directions.

Could one produce a large magnetic field with no power input but for cooling the apparatus? Could one use this at the least for shielding spacecraft?

      @garman1966@garman19667 жыл бұрын
    • Peter Karig no gold makes the best shielding go spacecraft being it is light,thermal,chemical resistant murcuries evaporation point would be too low and the stuff would vaporize if I was exposed to tempatures that are too high or turn to a icy substance if the temp was too low it would be possible if you could trap the mercury plasma by retaining it in a magnetic field around your craft but beyond that it's just a really hazardous material to keep around

  • I have an idea for a lifting force machine. Step 1: Get hollowed out cube. Step 2: Securely attach magnet to inner bottom of hollowed out cube. Step 3: Place a lever on inside bottom of cube behind the magnet that's securely attached to inside bottom of cube so that one side of the lever is pointing towards you and hanging over the magnet. Step 4: Attach a vertical bar to the top side of the part of the lever that is not hanging over magnet witch is securely attached to inner bottom of cube. Make sure the bar goes all the way up to the inner top of the cube barley touching it. Step 5: Securely attach a magnet to the side of the lever that is hanging over the magnet that is attached to the inner bottom of cube. Note: Magnets need to be facing each other with attracting poles N,S or S,N Note: The lever is going to have to be really close to the magnet on inner bottom of cube because of how close those magnetic fields need to be to interact. But not so close that magnets can touch. The magnet on top connected to lever is pulling the magnet on inner bottom of cube towards it and since the magnet on inner bottom of cube is connected to cube, this pulling force acts as a lifting force. Now at the same time the magnet on inner bottom of cube is pulling the magnet on top downwards BUT the magnet on top is connected to the lever so any downwards pulling force is being converted mechanically by the lever into upwards lifting force. Now if you know anything about magnets you now that there are magnets powerfull enough to lift far more weight then just there own. So essentialy this divice is exploiting the powerfull pulling force of magnets by mechanicaly transforming its magnetic pulling force into mechanical lifting force through the clever utilization of a lever, and walla stuff can be made to fly. Imagine if the magnets in this experiment where electro magnets so the ammount of electrical current going into them determined the ammount of lifting force that it would have. Now imagine this system being used as an attachment that could be placed under or ontop of vehicles to counter the weight of the vehicle and any cargo its carying. Now imagine if this was done with powerfull permanent magnets and turned sideways and placed in an electric generator and had enough strength to pass through the magnetic fields as it propelled itself forwards with its own magnetic pulling force. Speed (of rotation) increases with voltage applied. Direction (of rotation) can be controlled by N or S polarity of magnet (as he demonstrates): I think these are magnetic flux vortexes of some kind. • I was thinking about using mercury this way for a while now as its liquid and conductive. I was thinking in achieving very high speeds in order to lift the remaining weight as well.. My guess is that you would need to make several different chambers and you will need to control the magnetic pulses very fast. Im also guessing that you need to work with 3 magnetic field slots in order to keep the element in place (by element i mean the mercury). The timings must be perfect. A negative state before the element, a quick positive before the element that is being pushed forward and negative in front of it. Im just quick guessing because this is not going to work like this you need to be able to move the mercury like it was solid material so thats why you need to contain it between 2 so called slots (magnetic states). Thats why you need many different coils along the sphere. And you must use 2 elements to keep it balanced. By playing with the timing of the pulses , one element will make it go off balance and will make the housing lean or slingshot it into a particular direction... I always wanted to test this but never had the chance

It also releases lots of heat which contributes to that smoking at 02:28. Also, instead of contaminating mercury with talcum, use small pieces of paper. It's much easier to remove them and you minimize hazardous waste.

  • Interesting video. I would assume the 2 volts D.C. is with a current regulated source since the mercury should appear as a short between the inner and outer collar. It would be interesting to put a wound coil insulated from and around the outer collar and then switch to an A.C. Voltage and or use transistors to create a simulated A.C. If you could create a second track for a second isolated mercury container and see if you can transmit current and voltage to the second track of mercury with millimeters of isolation, you might have found a replacement for transformer's which are notorious for losing 70% of the input power between primary and the secondary of the transformer. I hope you continue experimenting. By the way, check out the designer of the "Blackfly Drone" he patented a new d.c...motor which reduces microtransient current paths in an electric motor. He also designed the blackfly and its engines.

    • Very interesting. I work with electronic devices, but I've never heard transformers "lose" 70% input (voltage?) during transition from primary to secondary windings. (Are you stepping up voltage at that point?) My basic question is (if you ever read this): Why are you simulating AC current, when above experiment states mercury only rotates when a DC current is applied? Peace. Thanks for reading.

    • @@writerNB It's not true. Have you ever heard about cavity? Build your own heater with old hdd and ac :D Look for "What can be done from the old hard drive? DIY Powerful Heater !" Other thing is that if you spin a pressurized (in plasma state) superconduct material like mercury it creates electromagnetic force in oposite to earth's magnetic field- antigravity. It's really stable. It's known at least from 197X but I think It was known way, way earlier. Look for TR-3B. It's real, I saw it really clearly on my own eyes.

    • nothing. simply nothing. This is just a motor with an a bit different topology (single-winding liquid coil). if you have a motor like this an apply an AC Signal to it it will not move as the mass is too great in comparison to the forces applied. Well, unless your AC-signal is like only 5 Hz, then you would see some movement.

      @ABaumstumpf@ABaumstumpf7 жыл бұрын
    • ABaumstumpf technically it's a circular magneto hydrodynamic drive. it would be interesting to see how much more speed could be achieved with the addition of an outer ring magnet. theoretically you could generate power by either moving the Mercury or rotating the field magnets.

    • To make a DC motor running which uses only the Lorentz force, you need a special device such as a commutator, which changes the direction of the current through the coils at the right time. Without a commutator, the rotor will rotate only a small portion, and then left standing. The same thing happens if you connect a coil from a stepmotor to a DC supply. You can see in the above test that there is no need for a special device such as a commutator to make the mercury spin, therefore there is another force in the game which makes the mercury rotate. Later on I'll explain what this is.

  • It's one of them magneto-hydrodynamic motors they invented for liquid metal fast breeder reactors. You see they needed liquid metal to cool them sorts of reactors due to them no needing moderation so they could breed uranium strait into plutonium to burn as fuel. Water cooling would absorb too many neutrons and slow them down. So they opted for using of all things liquid sodium. Welp, they needed as few moving parts as possible so they built pumps based on the principals this video shows. By running and electric current and magnetic field perpendicular to one another and having that surround a non magnetic/conducting pipe they were able to use high amp flow through the liquid to move the liquid metal.
