  • That was one of the most technically challenging games I've seen in a long time. Both teams neutralized the opposing superstar, making them mortal and beatable. Each team forced the other to out-smart them to get the win. That was outstanding basketball.

    • Stuelke and Affolter were both highly coveted 4-star recruits. That narrative that Caitlin Clark has been carrying a bunch of DII players is what the media erroneously has relayed over the past couple of years to add to her mystique and interest people who don't understand the landscape of women's college basketball. Iowa has always been a very solid Big Ten program. Without a great post player like Stuelke or reliable alternative scoring options like Affolter and Martin, Iowa would have lost to this depleted UConn team.

    • Stuelke and Affolter were making all the game-winning plays in the 3rd quarter, but it was Kate Martin who came through on those two plays in the waning minutes. Clark's biggest play was the 3 to make it 66-61, but Iowa almost ended up giving the game away. They have to play much better as team with a lead if they ever go up on SCar because those girls rely on turnovers. South Carolina's definitely beatable. Iowa needs to have someone who's strong with the ball take it up throughout the game.

Obviously, Clark would have to hit a three here and there, but Iowa plays much better when she doesn't hog the ball and take 40 shots. Stuelke saved Iowa's season. I said all along that she's stronger and more athletic than Czinano. Iowa's loyalty to Czinano cost them in last year's title game because Stuelke as a freshman was better than her and should have seen more minutes against Reese.

    • I think women’s basketball college coaching philosophy plays a part. They’re big on getting their best offensive player moving off ball and involving their teammates but at times you need to let your best player go iso hero ball and play like Gilbert arenas, Kobe, ai and start chucking because defense will have to double way near half court. If defense is clamping them off ball and preventing them moving off ball and zeroing in on them once they get the ball passed to them….well at that point let them bring the ball up and go Kobe early in the shot clock. I think not letting Clark and Paige get the green light hurt both teams

    • Disagree. Our team, UConn, Stanford, LSU, and Tennessee are powerhouses. Iowa is a blip on the radar these past few years all because of having a superstar player. The rest of the team without her would be 18-12, at best. They have some decent players coming back, and coming in, but that coach mortgaged her future off of CC and now she’s going to have to actually remember how to coach again after riding high these past few years. Keep in mind that Iowa needed Clark to score over 1/3 of their points on average, to win. That’s completely unsustainable. Meanwhile our program is returning 8/9 from our rotation, including our beast freshmen. Plus we’re adding 3 5-star recruits, plus a potential transfer. LSU is returning several key starters and capable bench. UConn will return much of the depth plus the number 1 recruit, and Bueckers will return. Stanford will be Stanford, and be primed for another deep run. Those are powerhouses.

I'm glad for my wallet that Iowa won, but I wish they had actually won it by making Bueckers take a contested shot with Stuelke closing on her instead of having a ref's predetermined whistle prevent any possibility of a buzzer beater. Iowa has a decent shot against South Carolina if they can hold their own in the paint because SCar has low basketball IQ lapses.

  • I'm a Uconn fan. Congratulations to Iowa. I have admiration for their entire program & sincerely wish them the best. To the rest of women's basketball world I say three things before commencement of my off season hibernation: 1- To the college basketball powers that be, please take serious steps to bring the officiating in the women's game up (even remotely close) to the men's. This *must* be done. 2- To Uconn's coach & company, from top to bottom, we are well aware of the severity of the 3 year injury decimation you have endured & have carefully noted the astonshing success you have achieved given the godawful circumstances. Your grit and class has fostered (even) more devotion among Uconn Nation than ever. We love you and could not be prouder. 3- Some perspective: Injury plague or not, Uconn has made the Final Four 14 of the last 15 years. Ponder that for a sec & remember that it's likely next season this plague *will* finally wane or end end. Finally, woe unto those who ridiculously pronounced Uconn done. Geno has jam packed his roster with premium talent. I know, several other schools are talented too. I'm aware of that, but how many have 3 ESPN Hoopgurlz #1 ranked players? Answer: 0. My humble prediction is that next season Uconn will remind the skeptics that the mightiest dynasty in history of women's sports is alive & well and shifting gears. Go Huskies! P.S. WELCOME SARAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have refereed for 30-plus years. The call made by the ref on the moving screen was absolutely correct. The player from IOWA that she illegally screened was the player receiving the ball for the shot. She was not a player out of the play. Had she not called the foul and UConn had made the shot, an illegal play would have caused the Iowa loss. Basketball has become too much an offensive game and very physical. The Iowa player did not embellish. She was clearly a smaller player impeded by a bigger player. The announcer said she leaned out. She moved both feet and did not assume a guarding position (2 feet on the floor and facing before contact). You never want a call to determine the outcome of a game unless the foul was obvious. In my view, this referee had the GUTS to make the tough call. It would have been so much easier just to let it go. This call will be questioned by those who do not know the game or favoured UConn and say they were robbed. I am not an Iowa fan or a Clark fan .. I am a referee.

I get it Geno should feel a little sore for that loss, because they were up big on a more experienced team with the best player on the court in Caitlin Clark of Iowa. They forced a lot of turnovers and played more physical throughout the entire game. The zone slowed down their offense but I knew from the 1st quarter this one might be a slow cooker for both teams…With all that being said shoutout to Iowa for getting back the National Championship! Although Caitlin Clark is great, her team is great as well! Martin, Stuekle, and Marshall all stepped up in a major way for Iowa in key moments! Hats off to UCONN because they got here with just an 8 man roster more than half of the team was injured and in sweatsuits…They lost the game but they won the battle of heart and effort! As a fan of the game tho, refs don’t make that call…give us, the audience, a chance to see a shot go up for the last seconds of the game. It would’ve made this game that much more captivating!! UCONN’s future is bright as always, because I’ve been watching women’s basketball since I was like 10 and to still see UCONN here in the final four is nostalgic but a testament to how far the game has come…for years I would root for somebody to take down Geno and his powerhouse teams whether it be Pat Summit, Muffett McGraw & Sky Diggs and now Dawn Staley & South Carolina!! South Carolina is on the rise to becoming a new dynasty, LSU is on their way towards greatness , Stanford is in the mix and now Iowa with a chance to win their program’s 2nd championship in decades. • All of these women are incredibly talented. What a fun game. Wish all of them the best in their careers. Thanks to KZhead for making highlights available for us people who cannot afford subscriptions. We DO WANT to watch excellent sports played by women.

    • Martin had an ok game but she had 4 turnovers and missed a few layups. Clean it up!

  • Thank you for posting this game on KZhead. I watched this game 1 hr. before the NCAAW championship game. This is the first ever women's b-ball game I've watched and even with the outcome known, it was very entertaining. I hope today's championship game is also posted.

    • 5 of UCONN’s best players are injured and out for the season. It is crazy. If they were healthy they would have been the only team that could have beaten SC. Iowa can play their beat game of the year and SC will still pull away and win by 5 - 15 in the 4th Quarter.
