The trace shot and yall showing how truly difficult a backcountry hunt is, is refreshing. That 300 prc smacks
Smacks hard!!!
Deep and steep with crappy weather something that you will always remember. When times are tough that’s when you find out who you are. Nice bull with some good mass.
Absolutely, nothing like pushing your metal toughness to its brink. Thanks for watching Corey!
A pack out I won’t soon forget lol
Im sure you'll be doing it again in about 10 months lol
Ha ha. I bought you guys dinner I think for that one didn't I!?
The things we do to go hunting, nice bull. I remember those years when I would stay out there too long and be shivering my ass off but now I’m getting older I think made me wiser
We needed to be two hours ahead of that storm and we would of been golden. Thanks for watching.
It's all fun and games until there's a big bull on the ground that you have to pack out 10 miles. Thanks for watching, David.
Thanks for watching, David! Hopefully we get a little wiser haha
When that bull went down in the first 5 ish minutes of this video I knew something happened during the pack out. Glad everyone came out in one piece!!! That bull has a great story!
For sure, Ethan. Your hunch was correct. Thanks for watching the video.
Thanks for watching, Ethan.
perfect time to kick back sip my coffee and watch this on my lunch break!
Enjoy! Have a great day!
Enjoy it, buddy. We almost got lost in a storm to bring this video to KZhead. Ha ha!!
Hope the film was as good as your coffee haha
@@aaronvanwoerkom6401 haha every minute!
@@erikvanwoerkom1896 we appreciate your sacrifice! haha
Earned that one boys! Congrats.
Thank you, PR!
Thanks, guys. It was a brutal pack out.
Thanks fellas
Don't be afraid to hang/leave the meat if it's that serious. It'll stay good for a lot longer than most think. Keep up the good work!
We were already hiking before that storm hit so we tried to push through. We didn't know how long it would last or when we would be able to get back in. It worked out this time; however, I am not sure I would take that same risk again.
Definitely a good thing to keep in mind. We just didn't know it would be as bad as it was!
@@aaronvanwoerkom6401 Yeah, I am sure you guys know that but I figured I would point it out since it wasn't mentioned. It's troubling what we forget in times of stress.
Thanks for the feedback, Adam. I think they all just wanted to get out of there and not go back in lol. It worked out for them this time!
I always enjoy the work the most. Seems to be what I remember most about hunts. But watching you guys pack out is more enjoyable for the short term.
It is the most memorable part to look back on, hopefully your fall is filled with more! Thanks for watching Nick!
Those scary situations suck but they always make for great stories 😂
Amen! haha the more miserable the more memorable!
They always make for the best stories. Ha ha. I'm just glad everyone is safe.
Amen! Thanks for watching brother
Talk about going from the best feeling to the worst feeling real quick! Glad you guys were able to make it out in one piece!
The elements can change quickly. That's for sure!
Crazy story! Congrats on the great bull! Mother nature tested your guys mental and physical toughness but y’all came out on top!
Yes, she did. I couldn't wait to get back to my truck and fire up the heater. Lessons learned. Thanks for watching, Leonel.
Mother Nature spanked us a little for being naughty and reminded us who's boss. We needed it though. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching, Leonel.
Thanks for watching!
Like Grandpa always told us, "Can't hunt next year if you don't make it home this year" congrats on a thumper of a general season bull!
Your grandpa was wise, Luke. Thanks for watching, man! It was an adventure in a half!
Amen to that, Luke. Thanks for watching, brother! Catch you on the next video!
Dang. Hell of a pack out. Good work. Telling the truth about how bad it was and how sketchy the pack put was!!! Top notch!
Wish we could have captured more of the pack out on video! Glad you enjoyed the video Joseph!
Great that you keep it real.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching, Terry.
Thanks, Terry! Glad you enjoyed
Wow! That's why respect you guys who hunt out west in the mountains. It can be so dangerous. Here in Michigan you can get into some bad situations too, but there's more to worry about and to have to deal with up there!
The West just hits different. Thanks for watching, Mary!
The monsters never come easy either the pursuit or pack out congrats great bull
They really don't, that's why it's a love hate relationship 😂 thanks for watching Amy!
Thanks for watching, Amy.
10 miles is a long walk. Glad y’all got out okay. The podcast end was nice. I think a lot of folks don’t realize the challenges of back country hunting, also the importance of being prepared for anything. Nature isn’t one to play nice nor predictable.
Thanks for watching Trad Man 😉 Hopefully people learn from our mistake and can be more prepared! Hopefully we see you at the Expo!
@@MuleyFreak I’ll be there Thursday!
Sweet public land bull. We hunted Montana this November in some pretty cold temps. We kept 2 propane heaters in the truck and extra clothes in the backseat incase we got caught out in it. Good job on getting out of there. I think most everyone can learn a lesson about preparedness when hitting the mountains in the winter.👍
These late season hunts can be brutal. And it seems like you learn something new on every one of them lol Thanks for watching, Marcus.
There's always lessons to be learned in preparedness. This hunt was brutal. From the hike in...to the hike out...I was exahusted after cutting him up let alone packing him out. Thank you for watching.
Great idea. Wish I would have had all that extra clothing for when I got back
It's awesome to have great friends to help with a brutal pack out like that!! Great job fellas!! 😁🤙🏹🦌
You got that right! Thanks for watching Nick!
@@MuleyFreak of course!! 😁🤙🏹🦌 Thanks for sharing!
One that will never be forgotten. You have some pretty awesome friends that are always there for you.
Erik's got the world's best friends - that's for sure. Thanks for watching!
Pretty spicy position y'all got in, to say the least. Eric your crew is a blessing and I'm sure you guys came away with an upgraded game plan should things go south again. The mountain doesn't give a damn, it just exists. Great story with a core message. Thanks for your honesty in sharing the story.
We definitely came away with a good story and will be more prepared for next time! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching Harrie!
@@MuleyFreak love your videos!
Awesome bull. I love all the "type 2" fun you guys got to have.
Thanks for watching, Blake.
The commentary at the end was great. Love hearing different perspectives about it after the fact. Good lessons in there too for those who are wanting to do this type of thing, stay safe!
For sure, Garret. I wouldn't have changed much here other than hustled out of the backcountry a little quicker, but sometimes you just don't know and just can't prepare for certain things. I was sending prapers to heaven on the hike out. Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed Garrett and thanks for watching!
We are glad you enjoyed it. It was something a little different than we usually do, but we felt it would convey the story!
Mountain weather can be so unpredictable and change quickly! That’s just one piece that makes western hunting difficult!
It really can be, it's also what makes it so addicting!
Being aware of what’s happening and could happen is the thing people need to take away from this video it’s not all sun shine and butterflies I’m glad to see everyone made it out and now got a story to tell it’s always the 2nd type fun that lives forever in us
Amen. Thanks for watching, Cody - appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed.
Amen to that, Cody. I was really worried that I had potentially lost my friend and brother over packing out a bull. It all worked out and we couldn't of done anything much different. We're glad the good Lord was looking over us on this day!
Well put. Thanks for watching!
Your welcome guys and the lord works in great ways
Great bull, being that far in the backcountry and getting it done has alot of unknown challenges. I appreciate you showing how it all unfolded, I would not of been able to keep filming under those circumstances. Respect 🤜🏼. Loving the content. #212 #steammovestrainstrainsmovemountains
Thanks for the comment, brother. It's challenging bringing these films to life and still trying to be successful in terms of notching a tag. It was a neat experience, but it was defintely a little risky in terms of conditions. Lessons learned for sure. Thanks for watching.
It was a brutal adventure to get that bull out of the backcountry, but it all worked out in the end. We had some angels looking after us that day.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed
Glad you all made it home safe. I have run out of water on a tough 9 mile hike, not a fun experience.
Thanks Brice! Backcountry hunting is no joke, glad you made it out as well!
Thankfully everyone is good, thanks for the explanation...never would have know that happened without it.
Everyone was good luckily, could have been much worse! Thanks for watching Aric!
Great story! congrats on one hell of a bull!! Glad you guys made it out save
Erik cleaned house on public land this day. Thanks for watching.
I'm super proud of him. Thanks for watching, Sinjin.
Thank you!
That was a hell of a pack out in the worst conditions, hell of a job
It sure was bad, thanks for watching Doug!
Nice bull Eric. Like they say once you pull the trigger fun is over and the work begins. That's an under statement for what you guys went through congrats
Fun is almost always over when you shoot an elk, but this one was just different. It got scary quick. I thank the good Lord that I made it back for my family.
Elk suck. Ha
Haha exactly! Thanks for watching, Vince.
Good video! Liked the follow up talk at the end. Felt like the hunting part was kinda short but hey good stuff
We didn't start filming until we got in there, but Erik located a bull pretty quickly the put the 212 ELD-X to work and then the adventure happened. The hunting part was just a sliver of what really went down. Thanks for watching, Jon.
We didn't know any other way to present the chain of events that transpired so we are glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
@@erikvanwoerkom1896 no problem man. I hope y’all didn’t take my comment negatively it wasn’t meant to be. Love the content and keep it coming! 👍👊
That's what happens when you kill a bull the first 10 minutes of the first day lol thanks for watching!
Glad everyone made it out unharmed. That’s the type of situation the reminds you who you’re friends truly are. Glad you put the podcast portion in at the end. We all learn from each other’s experiences.
Thanks Justin! We definitely learned a few lessons, hopefully others did as well!
Awesome shot!!! The packout story is wicked!!! Good job guys!!
Thanks for watching, it was an epic packout! 👊
Thanks for watchign, buddy!
Great job and bull Erik!! Smile when it sucks!😂😂 I’ve always enjoyed your guys videos. Has a bit of everything in it!! Plus I really like the podcast at the end. Adds a nice touch.👊🏼
Glad you enjoyed the podcast at the end, Shawn! We wanted to do something a little different - especially as we couldn't show what actually happened at the end.
@@MuleyFreak I hope you guys can continue to do that. It’s cool to actually see the podcast and listen.
Thanks for the feedback, Shawn. We sure appreciate it!
Thank you as always for your support, Shawn!
@@aaronvanwoerkom6401 yes sir. Always! Dedicated fan right here.
That’s pretty intense! It’s crazy the situations we get in while hunting! Thanks for the good content and the lessons learned and taught! It makes us all better hunters.
For sure. Thanks for watching.
Way to power through that, congratulations on a nice public land Bull.
Thanks, Braden. Crazy times!
What an intense hunt. Talk about your massive high to low swing all in a day. Glad you guys made it out safe and are here today to talk about it!
For sure. It was a fun hunt, glad we all made it safe!
Damn talk about a hell hole! You definitely earned that one!
Shot looked a little far back but bull was clearly DOA what an experience thanks for sharing!!
It def wasn't Erik's best shot, but the old 212 gr eld-x made up for it!
Glad you all made it out safe. Definitely try to be prepared
Thanks, Hunter!
Thanks for watching.
I like the fallow up at the end. Most wouldn’t say that they made that big of a mistake publicly. I love the truth and rawness of the fear. Because I to have done things and drug friends into help. Love videos keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback, brother and thanks for watching!
Beautiful bull! Awesome content.
Thanks, Todd! It was an awesome hunt for sure.
Thanks for watching, Todd. We appreciate it.
Much appreciated
Great general Bull, that isn’t easy!
It was a stud indeed! Definitely worth the sucky pack out
We feel fortunate for sure!
This is a great video. My favorite part was the pack out.
Thanks for watching Nathan, wish the pack out was our favorite part haha 😂
It's one of those "Embrace the Suck" moments Guys!!
There was a lot of suck on this hunt! Thanks for watching!
Sucked it did. ha ha
Great bull, and thanks for the awesome content. Glad everyone made it out safe
Thanks, Jackson! It was definitely sketch haha
I was pretty worried when that gnarly storm moved in. The good Lord was looking over us that day. Thanks for watching, Jackson.
Glad you are enjoying my man!
That was a crazy ending to a awesome hunt. Those 212 ELD X are unbelievable
They are a fantastic projectile.
Thanks for sharing, would have been a scary pack out for sure. It's an amazing hour fast weather changes in the mountains.
It def adds perspective to how small and minuscule we are in the grand scheme of things!
Thanks for watching, Chad.
Man those types of conditions really test a guy. The hard pack outs are the ones you remember the most. I always carry an InReach just in case. Way to grind through it guys 👍🏼
Now that I think about it I believe I had an inreach, but you hate to use it unless you really have to!
They put you and your buddies to the test. Ha ha. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Rog! I had my inReach just in case haha
@@aaronvanwoerkom6401 no buddy wants to be that guy that uses it in a bad situation but I think sometimes people can wait too long to use it. Sounds like you guys had a wild ride. I don’t think I’ve ever been in blizzard conditions like that while hunting.
I like that you were hunting with a suppressor and that you used what you had to to make a shot.
Suppressors are awesome, they don't blow your ears out or the canyon! Thanks for watching Mike!
Just listing to your voice now you can really tell how you felt in that moment, glad you guys all made it out safe! Awesome bull
It was a little scary. Thanks for watching!
Glad all of you made it, it's really scary when this kind of stuff happens. I had this happen on a deer hunt one year. We were new to the area, first time hunting there. We had to dump the deer and luckily we got a fire started. When you get that exhausted and you know life is in the balance it's a scary thing. Glad you're able to talk about this now, for all to learn. Thank you for sharing your hunts with us.
It really is scary when things get out of your control, glad you made it out as well! We hope people learn from our mistake and can be more prepared in the backcountry! Thanks for watching!
Nice Bull and great video!! Already looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Greg, new video this Friday!
Incredible hunt and story guys!
Thanks for watching!
Great video and bull. I like the camera catching the actual shot. It showed how realistic it is in the real world that you can't always get a comfortable shooting position, sometimes due to time or terrain you just have to take the shot you have. Nice real life video.
Glad you noticed how awkward that shot was, with terrain like that it's hard to get a perfect shot. Sometimes its all you can do to get a shot off! Thanks for watching!
Shout out from Florida. Good video and a reminder how dangerous things can get in a hurry. An Elk hunt is a bucket list of mine. Been on the fence to do a public hunt. Good to see you can still take a nice bull without spending a ton of money with a guided hunt. That 300 PRC smoked him!!!
Thanks for watching! The opportunity for public land bulls is still available just getting harder each year. Hope you get to check an elk hunt off your bucket list!
“212” looks/sounds like a humbling hunt. Really enjoyed the podcast at the end!
Very humbling for all of us. Thanks for watching!
The pack out was my favorite part
The pack out is when you find out what you are made of!
Wow lucky you boys made it out, stud bull!
Yessir. Thanks for watching!
Love how hard you’re willing to work. 10 miles in to pack out an elk is no joke. Great elk. Jealous. I need to get after another elk again this fall! Congrats!
Elk hunting is tough, but always rewarding in the end. Good luck this up coming fall Justin!
Hypothermia is bad news. I experienced it once whitewater kayaking in the winter. I didn't care if I made it out or not. Fortunately, I was with good friends who pushed me on 1 stroke at a time. I'''m glad you all made it out safely. Thanks for the reminder that Mother Nature can be unforgiving at time. That's a dandy bull. Good job.
That's the crazy part, David. You don't care what happens to you because your brain isn't working correctly. We are lucky to have pushed through it all.
The title tells me everything that’s the phrase I try to live my life by. Just send it bud
Send it!
Excellent content. Showing the shooter using pack as rifle rest then making a truly great kill shot. Thanks for these videos
Glad you noticed the pack being used as a rest, much harder shot than people realize! Thanks for watching Stephen!
Great hunt! Way to be tough!
Thanks for watching, Zach!
Thanks for watching, Zach.
So scary. Glad you all made it out ok.
Things like to go bad in the backcountry, thanks for watching Bob!
Every year I think of cutting safety gear, clothes, etc from my pack and then I see a video like this and thinks what's a couple extra #s. Glad everybody was safe
Sometimes it's hard knowing what gear and items to cut and also what not to cut. Glad this video could offer some insight. Thanks for watching!
Wow. Thanks so much for sharing this one and being as candid and transparent as possible. Being a hunter myself and honorable discharge service member, I have experienced some right situations. You guys made it seem like I was right along with you. Even though no one wants a tragidy to strike, you guys were spot on in your delivery of this experience and from that point nicely done. To be honest I felt emotional watching this because eod the sincerity and realness. Again because of your honesty and beyond hard work. Way to keep it real guys. Glad no one died.
Thanks for the kind words and the feedback, Brandon. Welcome to the channel!
Nice work once again!!
Thanks for following the adventure!
Nice bull, Good job!
Thanks for watching, Mason. Watch until the end if you already haven't!
Thanks for watching, Mason!
Intense!! Glad you all made it!!
Thanks, Jeff. It was a little scary, but the team pulled through!
My favorite part was seeing the drive you guys had to get the sucker out, then the podcast at the end explains and opens your eyes on how tough it really was! Congrats Erik, keep up the good videos guys
We went hard in the paint getting all of that bull out of the backcountry. Thanks for watching, Beau!
Awesome video. Not one I’ll share with my wife.😳. Never let me hunt again. Glad you’re safe.
😂 Yeah better not share it with her!
Sketchy....glad you all made it out OK. Hypothermia ain't no joke.
Thanks for watching Steve, hypothermia really isn't a joke. Hopefully people can learn from are mistake!
Bull down! Packout looked tough, well worth it in the end. I shoot 225 grain out of my 338 win mag and they sure fly true I also just put a bull down at 527 yards with heavy wind and had no problems!
Those ELD-X's hit hard, even when the shot isn't perfect, that's why we use Hornady! It was worth it in the end, thanks for watching Kendall!
Def scary situation! Glad u all made it out ok and are able to tell the story!
Thanks, Greg. It got scary quick, but the good lord was looking out for us!
Congrats on the bull Erik! Crazy listening to the backstory afterwards! Glad all made it out okay! Insane how quick a hunt can turn for the worse! But like I said good to hear no one was hurt!
Also huge eye guards on that thing!!
Thanks, Danny. We appreciate you!
That's a wild pack out. Heck of still though. Way to get it out.
It got a little Western there towards the end, Destry. Thanks for watching!
The comment you couldn't be more pumped cracks me up. If it was a 6x6 or 400 class bull you would be more pumped :)
An old stud like this deep in public land. It could of been a 260" 6 point and I would of been stoked.
Grind it out 10 miles deep and your level of pump changes. Especially on general season public land hunting.
glad you made it out ok; been in sim situations myself
Thanks, man. It was a little touch and go there for a bit.
My favorite part is the friendship y’all have that they drop what they are doing to help out and of course the nice bull you shot!
Thanks, buddy! We all learned a lot from this one.
Hell yeah boys!! Great bull and story line! I've had 2 similar experiences where packing bulls out. One of them on a legit razor back ridge where if I took 2 steps either way, wrong. I was falling 700' to my death. I had a hind and front of a mature 6 point bull and 2 other buddies had the rest of the meat and head. It was a 6 mile pack out, with 2 miles of razor back ridge. We took the wrong way out, thinking it'd be faster where it was already 12am when we started the hike back out. Ended up taking longer than the original way in and alot more scary. Ended up getting back at 7 30 in the morning. It was a hell of a night ill never forget!
Dang, brother. That's an insane story as well. I'm glad you guys were okay. I was extremely nervous for my crew on this hunt. The good lord was looking over us this day. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like you've had an adventure or two yourself. Thanks for watching!
insane!! Glad you made it back safe
Man you have some awesome friends
yeah he does!! lol
We have a good group!
@@MuleyFreak yes you do,
This should be a very good video to show to all hunters that are thinking on going into a wilderness area like this! Ya'll for the most part were very experienced hunters/hikers and were pushing the limits! In this type of terrain you need to be experienced and prepared! And be aware that the weather and conditions can changes very quickly! Know your limits! Maybe do a segment on how to be prepared for a situation like this and maybe critique it a little more. Also play Murphy's law into it a little. Might just save someones life one day! Good elk, good job on surviving this. Ya'll were definitely running on the edge on this one! Glad it turned out good.
A hunter preparing for this type of hunt should for sure know and realize his or her limits. This hunt was insane and the crew knowing their limits made all the difference. A lot of other folks might not of made it, but being together, in shape, and knowing when to push hard made all the difference.
We are far from perfect and regardless of weather forecasts you can always get surprised on the mountain. Thanks for watching!
Glad you guys made it out of there packing out that big of an elk ! Scary situation. Liked the explanation at the end .
Def a humbling situation. Thanks for watching!
Dang good video guys it sucks that the weather moved in glad you all made it out ok
We feel fortunate as well. Thanks for watching!
Sweet bull thanks for sharing and sounds like you got some buddies that you could ride the river with. That's awsome and hard to find.
Thanks for watching Corey! Good hunting buddies are hard to come by, but we got a pretty good group over here! Hope you do as well 👊
Tough set up on that shot. Guess that's why you send 212 grains at em. I'm really liking what I'm seeing from that 300 PRC. Good job not dying boys. 👍
That's exactly how Erik felt. It was a difficult shot set up, but the 212 made up for Erik's error.
The Grind Pod cast discussion reminds me of marriage...cold, rain, blizzard, slipping, falling, hypo, dark, in the valley....your brains shuts down, you don't make good decisions...you were shaking...but like Adam and men for thousands of years post marriage, you survived and morning came
Ha ha ha ha. Truer words have never ever been said lol
awesome bull and video boys thanks for sharin and the podcast at the end i dont think any of us knew what the shit show of a packout you all went through I always look forward to your videos
Wish we could have captured more on video to show how bad it was! Glad you enjoy the videos Kurt!
Great hunt glad to hear everyone made it out safe. We learn every time we go out in the back country everything can change in a matter of seconds. Hunt on brother.
We for sure learned some lessons from this hunt! Thanks for watching Marciano, good luck this upcoming fall!
Congrats, nice bull Erik! 300 PRC hits like a hammer
She hits like a hammer! Thanks for watching, Jeff.
Congrats on a dandy stinky wapiti!!! We can all learn something about survival from listening to y'alls commentary about the hike out in nasty conditions!
For sure! More to come on the full length podcast!
Glad you boys made it out safe! Nothing like some buddies that will dig in deep with ya to get things done! Nice work!
For sure. Super grateful for everyone involved who helped out.
Been in a similar situation, had to pack a friend's bull out two days after he'd shot it after a major snow storm. Waist deep snow going up to the meat and back off the mountain getting us soaked, then darkness hit with temps dropping. Both of us were in very rough shape before a third friend met us at the road pushing us the 3 miles back down the snow filled road to the truck making sure we didn't stop.
Sounds like you have some good friends! The backcountry is unpredictable and it takes that mental toughness to keep going. Thanks for sharing your experience with us and glad you made it out safe!
Hey man. Great bull. Shot looked a little back but still worked. Good job
Definitely not the shot we hoped for, but he died quick. The conditions were steep and getting set up quickly was tricky. Thanks for watching.
Definitely a scary sounding packout. Always be prepared for the worst hoping for the best.
Yeah could have been more prepared for sure!
Heres my genuine comment, sure the heck glad i didnt have to pack that out with you haha!!! But i would have, times like that make you smarter and stronger, and the experience more memorable, once your back to the truck at least haha!!!
They are the worse while it's happening, but do make for the best stories! You're right that it makes you stronger and smarter! Thanks for watching Alex
Super awesome commentary. Its so awesome to be able to learn from your guys' experiences! It makes all of us better and better prepared, even just watching/hearing about your guys' experiences! Glad everyone made it out ok!
It's neat country for sure. We appreciate you watching, buddy!
