Here i am carving a wooden coffee cup ( also called a kuksa ) out of birch burl wood. i enjoyed crafting this woodworking project and i had great fun designing it along the way.
I just need to mention that i hit 1000 subscribers a few days ago and that is really exciting for me :) Thank you to each and everyone of you, you rock!
I have no idea what my next project will be so please please come with suggestions! i kind of want to make a wooden bowl somehow, but it has to be a really cool and unique design on it, maybe waves or something?
I hope you all have a great day and if you have any technical questions about what i am doing in this video i will gladly answer them for you.
Cheers.

You made it look like the coffee cup was in there just waiting for you to let it out. A true artist of woodwork.👍
Thank you!
Nice! Thanks for not putting music to this :)
Yeah well people where annoyed by the music and i listened to them and im glad i did. Just the sounds makes it a lot more relaxing to watch 😃
Always a tough call.
Exquisite! I am bed bound, I spill, get burned or break cups and bowls constantly it seems... But I love beautiful things and so plastic kills my heart. Something like this though! Ah, how perfect! It would also take me back out to nature... To my woods I love and miss so very much!
Made from a single piece of wood... work by a real craftsman. Many thanks for posting.
idk how this showed up in my recommended but awesome work that’s insanely rad
Thank you so much 😃 youtube is very hard to understand sometimes
Mine too loved it
That is beautiful, you did an amazing job creating your cup.
Watching a beautiful object being made with consummate skill by someone who knows how to let their hands say all that needs to be said... I love it.
Najładniejsza kuksa jaką widziałem. Jak ja bym chciał tak umieć.
Muito bonito este trabalho! Parabéns pela obra prima.
This is so unique! I didn't know that I needed a coffee cup and spoon until now... 😄 Fantastic work as always! Thank you for sharing! ✌
Thank you so much! i appreciate it a lot :) i will keep sharing more in the future
Absolutely beautiful. In Canada, our fur-trading ancestors that traveled the country in their canoes, called Voyageurs, had wooden cups such as yours, with many different designs, tied to the sashes around their waists, and would dip them in the water, for drinking, while paddling. I am sure that the history of these cups is centuries old.
That is some Water Zoo you just traveled thru. Thanks for your Afterword which I agree totally with. I worked thirtyfive years in an open pit iron mine on the shovels. What destruction to the UP of Michigan we wrought. I can only hope Mother Nature can make it right in the centuries to come. Now retired I’ve come to appreciate the untouched wilderness that’s becoming a challenge to find here.
Beautiful work
Thank you!
Wow...! A shallow coffee cup with a crack on the bottom...! Nice going...!
Thank you for making a video that's easy on the eyes AND the ears. You're a rare gem in the power tool using KZhead community.
Talz1803 Yeah i wanted to make it suiting to watch. I actually might make another wooden cup video soon
A wake-n-bake coffee cup with built in bong, would be an awesome project.
Middle Earth: Elven Coffee Cup. Amazing Skill Set.
Ohh, such a lovely piece! It looks like it would feel like drinking coffee out of an acorn. The faerie in me likes that idea very much.
DiResta and Jonas every single product are unique and awesome.
Very very good Handwork. 👏👏👏
I watched couple of your previous builds and it completely mesmerized me. Your carving is completely god gifted. You have to be proud one your craftmanship.completely enjoyed your builds.still couple of more to see.
AMbros Custom Thank you very much! How do you like these videos without music? I feel like it is a better way of making videos
Jonasolsenwoodcraft I think you definitely have to add music to your videos and that's just my vision. It makes the build more alive or may be try to syncronize that with your work. That completely takes your project to a whole new level.other than that you are a god gifted artist my brother.:)
Ok thank you for the input. i will take that to concideration in my next creation :)
If youre gonna use Music, may I suggest you keep a Non Music version as they definitely qualify for ASMR, The sounds are so Rich :-)

Thank you so much!
Absolutely stunning
Thank you!
Muito bom. Gostei.bela arte
Thank you very much!
Awesome work there, I really enjoyed watching this well-made vid! In the case of sealing the cup and re-sealing it, I have read that Finnish elders used fresh coffee grounds .They rubbed it into the wood until all moisture was gone and just the powder remained, two times, if I'm not mistaken. To me that makes sense since coffee has oils and tannic acids in it which should seal and also nourish the wood ;-)
This sounds so interesting and probably smells amazing in the process!! Thanks fpr the info I might try this method
Buen trabajo y con paciencia. FELICITACIONES.
I adore the leaf motif. Very wonderful surprise!
Amazing work

I just liked and subscribed! Thank you. It's very neat to watch someone make an item by hand like this. Usually machines do it. I'm glad the art is not lost.
Thank you! This was a great project to go through with. Im sure i will be making more of these wooden cups in the future (with a different design)
So beautiful. Thanks for showing how you make your layout lines. Fabulous.
Another great job Jonas, glad to see your channel is growing, I told you it would, and it's only going to get bigger.

Is the Danish oil not toxic, and also will it no mix with hot liquids, is the Danish oil enough to totally seal the mug or can you not let liquids sit in it for to long??
Danish oil is a very strong oil compared to a large variety of other finishes. It does the work well as a sealer judged by me, but you should add multiple coats of oil. The danish oil that is food safe says so clearly on a label on the bottle. I would not have coffee sitting in the cup for days, but i think it would handle a few hours just fine. Also just handwash it
I would highly suggest mineral oil with citrus solvent as a thinner agent. Both are 100% food grade and bring the grain out just as well. Excellent work by the way.
@@Jonasolsenwoodcraft what is Danish oil?
@@vin17flores72 Since you haven't got a reply yet I'll try: When you highlight the words "Danish oil" in your question and right-click them, then chose "search google for xy" you'll find plenty of definitions, articles, shop offers and even videos explaining Danish and other wood finishing oils. (Or you could just google it instead). The first suggested page is Wikipedia, where it says: "Danish oil is a wood finishing oil, often made of tung oil or polymerized linseed oil, although there is no defined formulation so its composition varies among manufacturers. Danish oil is a hard drying oil, meaning it can polymerize into a solid form when it reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere. It can provide a hard-wearing, often water-resistant satin finish, or serve as a primer on bare wood before applying paint or varnish. It is a "long oil" finish, a mixture of oil and varnish, typically around one-third varnish and the rest oil." I hope that helps. Greetings, Elle-Iza
Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing!
Stunning!! Thanks soo much for sharing!
Beautiful work! I just carved a couple tea cups from king wood, and I'm looking for sealant ideas. How often will you need to re seal the cup since you are putting hot liquid in it?
Hey i really dont know? I have a wooden cup my father made for me and i have been using it for over 10 years and never sealed it again 🤔
But you could aply another coat of oil at any time
It's a beautiful cup you make I wonder if you can drink from it after you put that oil in it Danish oil thanks for the video this is Gabriel from Houston Texas
Idk if you figured out the answer by now, but technically, all finishes are food safe after giving them ample time to fully cure, like over a month. But even still, I wouldn't fool with it. I'd personally just leave it unfinished, and let it become seasoned naturally like with wooden spoons and whatnot. No dishwasher tho
@@connorhart7597I use tung oil on my spoons. 1/2 tung oil, 1/2 citrus solvent. It works well. Just takes a while to dry.
A work of art. The grain in the piece is beautiful ❤️ show worthy. Fantastic job 👍 thanks for sharing,& have a beautiful day.🦊🦊🦊
Just seeing the thumbnail, this mug is breath taking 🙁
U made Aladdin's Lamp.
Helt utrolig bra arbeide. Du har fått en ny abbonent :-)
Tusen takk :)
Hands of gold
Thats just awsome. I love it and honestly you made me thinking about starting carving too. Thanks for your work and sharing your knowledge with us.
Awesome work! Really enjoyd watching it. 1% magic 99% skill😉 I've got two questions left.. Is danish oil food save? And can you drink hot drinks out of this cup?
The danish oil i used here is food safe. It even says so on the label, but i think it excists danish oil that is not. Ye you can drink coffee or tea out of this cup
@didin just make sure to let it cure for 30+ days in a warm dry location before using.
Hi Jonas, your description says this is a burl. I could see a small bark inclusion in the bottom of the cup, but no other burl material. Did the video just not pick it up too well? Or was it part-burl, part-trunk? Jonas, your channel must be growing FAST! You mentioned in the description 1000 subscribers, and I’ve just become subscriber 4010, just seven days later! You deserve it! A lovely video, well put together. Thank you.
Thanks :) well this piece of wood is actually about 90% burl. its a bit normal wood on the handle, but the rest is from a pretty big burl. It is not a very figured burl, but it still have a few lines in it. I dont come across burl with a lot of figure very often and most times they look like this. Thanks for the sub :) yeah it is growing a lot faster than i expected and i will try to keep up the momentum :)
Jonasolsenwoodcraft ok, thanks. You start the video from a band-sawn billet. In future videos, if you could start with an earlier shot of a log or burl before you take it to the bandsaw, I would find that interesting. Wood just has an endless capacity to amaze, delight and surprise us, doesn’t it?
Yeah wood is superinteresting and the more i work with it the more my obsession grows :D i recently had a vacation in poland and when i walked in some parks there i could not stop imagining what kind of awesome wood figure that could be inside of some really big trees :D i think it was black walnut trees, but im not sure. Ok i will try to film from when i cut the burl from the start if i am starting with a whole burl on a project :)
Jonasolsenwoodcraft: You are on the journey I imagine our craftsman ancestors have been on for thousands of years. And we are like that because we are reflecting the nature of our father before us, who made us in his image: Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Yeah i will enjoy the journey and i am looking forward to what it will bring. i am not a religious man i must say, but more of a spiritual kind
Absolutely entrancing work. Thank you for sharing this.
So much fun to watch, going to start with a simple one.
I don't think Danish oil is food safe :/
Well it says «food safe» in front of the bottle so i am 100% confident that the oil i used is. Bought from www.verktoyas.no

WOW. Gorgeous. Doing a very intricate feather design might be a future interest to you. These resembled flower petals to me, if that is what you were going for. Regardless, you made a beautiful cup. I'd love to have one of those on my backpack. Guess I better get to work! Cheers budd!!
