Here i am carving a wooden coffee cup ( also called a kuksa ) out of birch burl wood. i enjoyed crafting this woodworking project and i had great fun designing it along the way.
I just need to mention that i hit 1000 subscribers a few days ago and that is really exciting for me :) Thank you to each and everyone of you, you rock!
I have no idea what my next project will be so please please come with suggestions! i kind of want to make a wooden bowl somehow, but it has to be a really cool and unique design on it, maybe waves or something?
I hope you all have a great day and if you have any technical questions about what i am doing in this video i will gladly answer them for you.
Cheers.

  • Exquisite! I am bed bound, I spill, get burned or break cups and bowls constantly it seems... But I love beautiful things and so plastic kills my heart. Something like this though! Ah, how perfect! It would also take me back out to nature... To my woods I love and miss so very much!

  • Absolutely beautiful. In Canada, our fur-trading ancestors that traveled the country in their canoes, called Voyageurs, had wooden cups such as yours, with many different designs, tied to the sashes around their waists, and would dip them in the water, for drinking, while paddling. I am sure that the history of these cups is centuries old.

  • That is some Water Zoo you just traveled thru. Thanks for your Afterword which I agree totally with. I worked thirtyfive years in an open pit iron mine on the shovels. What destruction to the UP of Michigan we wrought. I can only hope Mother Nature can make it right in the centuries to come. Now retired I’ve come to appreciate the untouched wilderness that’s becoming a challenge to find here.

  • Awesome work there, I really enjoyed watching this well-made vid! In the case of sealing the cup and re-sealing it, I have read that Finnish elders used fresh coffee grounds .They rubbed it into the wood until all moisture was gone and just the powder remained, two times, if I'm not mistaken. To me that makes sense since coffee has oils and tannic acids in it which should seal and also nourish the wood ;-)

  • Is the Danish oil not toxic, and also will it no mix with hot liquids, is the Danish oil enough to totally seal the mug or can you not let liquids sit in it for to long??

    @playfullburito@playfullburito6 жыл бұрын
    • Danish oil is a very strong oil compared to a large variety of other finishes. It does the work well as a sealer judged by me, but you should add multiple coats of oil. The danish oil that is food safe says so clearly on a label on the bottle. I would not have coffee sitting in the cup for days, but i think it would handle a few hours just fine. Also just handwash it

      @Jonasolsenwoodcraft@Jonasolsenwoodcraft6 жыл бұрын
    • I would highly suggest mineral oil with citrus solvent as a thinner agent. Both are 100% food grade and bring the grain out just as well. Excellent work by the way.

    • @@Jonasolsenwoodcraft what is Danish oil?

      @vin17flores72@vin17flores724 жыл бұрын
    • @@vin17flores72 Since you haven't got a reply yet I'll try: When you highlight the words "Danish oil" in your question and right-click them, then chose "search google for xy" you'll find plenty of definitions, articles, shop offers and even videos explaining Danish and other wood finishing oils. (Or you could just google it instead). The first suggested page is Wikipedia, where it says: "Danish oil is a wood finishing oil, often made of tung oil or polymerized linseed oil, although there is no defined formulation so its composition varies among manufacturers. Danish oil is a hard drying oil, meaning it can polymerize into a solid form when it reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere. It can provide a hard-wearing, often water-resistant satin finish, or serve as a primer on bare wood before applying paint or varnish. It is a "long oil" finish, a mixture of oil and varnish, typically around one-third varnish and the rest oil." I hope that helps. Greetings, Elle-Iza

    • Idk if you figured out the answer by now, but technically, all finishes are food safe after giving them ample time to fully cure, like over a month. But even still, I wouldn't fool with it. I'd personally just leave it unfinished, and let it become seasoned naturally like with wooden spoons and whatnot. No dishwasher tho

Or was it part-burl, part-trunk? Jonas, your channel must be growing FAST! You mentioned in the description 1000 subscribers, and I’ve just become subscriber 4010, just seven days later! It is not a very figured burl, but it still have a few lines in it. I dont come across burl with a lot of figure very often and most times they look like this. Thanks for the sub :) yeah it is growing a lot faster than i expected and i will try to keep up the momentum :)

    • Jonasolsenwoodcraft ok, thanks. You start the video from a band-sawn billet. In future videos, if you could start with an earlier shot of a log or burl before you take it to the bandsaw, I would find that interesting. Wood just has an endless capacity to amaze, delight and surprise us, doesn’t it?

Ok i will try to film from when i cut the burl from the start if i am starting with a whole burl on a project :)
