  • Your work is just extraordinary Sir. My father was a keen wood turner in his younger days, so as a child I was often around him in his garage, hearing those same sounds and I can almost smell the timber as it is being turned. Such beautiful wood. The resin just makes it exceptional. You are a true artist. Best regards to you from South Africa

  • i don't think that stand does it justice, the color and the shape overpower it a bit instead of elevating and 'disappearing'. but that orb is BEAUTIFUL. amazing choice on the colors. because that wood had the diff layers and projections it almost does what a beach does and the color of clear water - the aqua being paler or more intense depending on depth. i've seen that too with resin pours like for a table. but it makes the yellow really sing, the glow is gorgeous. the other thing about that wood is it reminds me of inside a cave. so in your creation it's a very mysterious 'place' you've made. begs to be stared at. i have a few crystal balls with neat formations inside that make you wanna keep looking and this is like that. i might call it a gazing orb/sphere. anyway lovely work. i almost think this would look nice on a velvet pilow or a metal wire stand. just something thinner and minimal so the whole focus is on the orb. :)

    @lurklingX@lurklingX8 ай бұрын
    • I agree the stand doesn't match at all. should be the same colour as the burl - even the rounded nature of it, doesn't quite look right, but wow what a piece! Observe the stands the Chinese place under their prized pieces, there's a mathematical ratio & using pieces of the outer sections of the burl might produce something more interesting & which links the two together instead of overwhelming the orb with the stand. Like the technique of the 'flaws' in the resin - quite stunning.

  • Have you considered using silicone mould release spray in that plastic tubing when you did the resin pour. You might have been able to slide the piece out without having to cut the tube apart. This would mean you could reuse the plastic tube multiple times & save wasting plastic. I hope this suggestion helps. I love the piece. I would love to know what you did with the off cuts of the wood from the start.

I used to do a lot of woodwork, including turning on a lathe, a lot of years ago. Although I'm recently forced into a wheelchair I hope that one day soon I will be able to turn again. Just need to set the lathe closer to the ground, or get a high chair. Your work is amazing and inspiring. I've already thought of several projects I want to work on now. Including a whole series of exoplanets. I've never worked with or turned epoxy. It looks very exciting to work with. I'm still going through a lot of your videos, I've gotten about half way through including a several hour binge today. I'm hoping to one day use my VA loan and get my own place. Since I can't drive anymore I will have a wood lathe, for sure, in the garage. Thanks for your videos. I might also try and pick your brains for tips on working with different materials.

My current project is in two pieces to make into a box in the shape of a globe. I’ve mounted each piece on a base plate with the view of eventually plugging the holes with super glue coloured with pigment. I tried a glue block but it wasn’t successful attached to resin. But it takes me a week to do a days work and I don’t have a jig to make it round. Just as well I have the time 🌞

  • Hello Jack. once again a wonderful video with a wonderful work. It is always a pleasure for me to watch you at work. You radiate such calmness that nothing in the world can throw you off balance. And this, apart from your manual skills on the lathe, with a good eye for the artistic element. In this context, I am actually surprised that you approach the resin with a tube. Many other wood turners prefer a parting tool here. But well, in the end I'm still concerned with the question, what do you do with such an object? I too have made some of these “sculptures”, of course not in the same quality as your objects. Then I was asked: "Yes, what should I do with it, what is it good for?" " Then I don't have the answers, and to say, well, that's just art, just enjoy it, is mostly met with incomprehension. I would be interested to know how you think about it. Greetings from Northern Germany

It just showed up already ready to pour into but I didn't see *how* you created that mold base. Any details on this i would so appreciate. Thank you! I LOVE this! That being said, I’m going to keep you around a little longer, as your projects are just so dang interesting. Thanks!

    • I know everyone will think this is bollocks but I did it intentionally.. like for real. I felt clear resin is over done and I wanted more Going on innit.. iv cracked many castings unintentionally mind you. 😆

    • @@JackMackWoodturning You've gone to a whole new level if you did that intentionally ... now even more impressed! Not done any epoxy stuff like this before, but can you generate extra heat by adding extra hardener?

      @barry.w.christie@barry.w.christie Жыл бұрын
    • I’m not sure about that.. but I know that if you fill 1.5lt of resin into the pressure pot and then sit the pressure pot in a very warm greenhouse the results are beautiful thermo shatter. In the video you do not see the filling of the cracks. After rough shaping the ball I took a syringe full of clear epoxy and filled the cracks that were visible.. once it start to leak from any of the cracks I covered the crack with thick CA and a quick blast with CA accelerator seals it over instantly.. left over night and you can’t see the openings where cracks run outside… PLUS.. you’ve just bonded the full structure back into one mass. This was my first shot at thermo shattered resin, it’s not going to be my last. 😊

      @JackMackWoodturning@JackMackWoodturning Жыл бұрын
    • @@JackMackWoodturning Which was my next question, did you full the cracks, because I then thought they'd disappear, but using clear against the tinted would stop that ... brilliant :)
