Woodturning - Out Of This World !!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe the turn a large goldfield burl Into a decorative display piece with thermo shattered epoxy resin and an exotic hardwood base. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.

Still keeping with Krypton 😂
Planet Amberwoods Eye..... Seems fitting...😀😀
Opulent
Twin Paradises of Bytopia - Two layers sharing one sky that formed one of the Outer Planes in the Great Wheel cosmology model representing alignments between lawful good and neutral good.
Nebo, due to your Project's appearance. A Barren planet lacking vegetation is dry and has little to no atmosphere the surface is Rocky with common features like mountains Canyons plateaus and craters.
I actually think the heat cracks in the resin make this look even better like it's a dragons eyeball or something, really fantastic!
Thanks buddy.. I cast it hot intentionally expecting thermo shatter in the resin. I would have liked more to be honest.
@@JackMackWoodturning Yeah, I agree, the thermal cracks really add interest. 👍
It’s a technique I’m planning to explore in much more detail 😊
I was going to ask what made the cracks but read the comments and learned something today why doesn't it do that more often
@@billhatcher2984 it only happens if there is too great a volume of resin and too much heat generated. I’m still experimenting with how to manipulate it to be honest.
Магический шар🥰 Очень необычно и красиво. Супер
If you wired in a light into the base and had the resin vertical, the internal features would be more visible. It would make an interesting lamp!
Your work is just extraordinary Sir. My father was a keen wood turner in his younger days, so as a child I was often around him in his garage, hearing those same sounds and I can almost smell the timber as it is being turned. Such beautiful wood. The resin just makes it exceptional. You are a true artist. Best regards to you from South Africa
I was impressed by the very nice workmanship
Thank you. Did you like the finished piece ?
J’ai rarement vu une pièce aussi belle! Magnifique
i don't think that stand does it justice, the color and the shape overpower it a bit instead of elevating and 'disappearing'. but that orb is BEAUTIFUL. amazing choice on the colors. because that wood had the diff layers and projections it almost does what a beach does and the color of clear water - the aqua being paler or more intense depending on depth. i've seen that too with resin pours like for a table. but it makes the yellow really sing, the glow is gorgeous. the other thing about that wood is it reminds me of inside a cave. so in your creation it's a very mysterious 'place' you've made. begs to be stared at. i have a few crystal balls with neat formations inside that make you wanna keep looking and this is like that. i might call it a gazing orb/sphere. anyway lovely work. i almost think this would look nice on a velvet pilow or a metal wire stand. just something thinner and minimal so the whole focus is on the orb. :)
I agree the stand doesn't match at all. should be the same colour as the burl - even the rounded nature of it, doesn't quite look right, but wow what a piece! Observe the stands the Chinese place under their prized pieces, there's a mathematical ratio & using pieces of the outer sections of the burl might produce something more interesting & which links the two together instead of overwhelming the orb with the stand. Like the technique of the 'flaws' in the resin - quite stunning.
Задумка! Технология! Руки мастера! Шедевр!
Have you considered using silicone mould release spray in that plastic tubing when you did the resin pour. You might have been able to slide the piece out without having to cut the tube apart. This would mean you could reuse the plastic tube multiple times & save wasting plastic. I hope this suggestion helps. I love the piece. I would love to know what you did with the off cuts of the wood from the start.
The offcuts are in my burl bin.. many different things happen from the burl bin, you’ll have to keep watching to find out 😉😉
Have you considered using a solar powered lathe in order to save electricity?
Solar power doesn’t save electricity Chris. I think you might mean save using fossil fuels to produce electricity.
@@JackMackWoodturning No,I meant solar,a tongue in cheek response to becca*MHGH’s concern about wasting 8 inches of pvc pipe, good grief.
Truly one of the most suggestions ever.
Hi jack hope your doing well. What a gorgeous piece of wood. Can’t wait to see what you make. I love the way you respect a piece of wood. You se the beauty of it and get the most out of it. Your work still amazes me . Stunning just so stunning . I think yellow is a gorgeous colour I always say it’s happy 😃. The stand is a beautiful colour to it looks like our red wood. Wow wow wow how beautiful is it when polished now the resin looks like glass thank you it’s been a pleasure to watch. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎😎😎🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for the lovely kind words Susan. So glad you enjoyed it.
What is the mold made from?
Wow that is gorgeous!!
Волшебный шар... У Вас золотые руки!!!
I’d say it was a waste, but this has been the best 17 plus minutes of relaxing, and soothing video work I’ve seen in a LONG time. As a videographer, the story line is smooth, transitions are crisp, and the details and process is amazing. Crafted, and gifted you are! Definitely a fan! 👏👏
Thanks a lot Josh, very much appreciated buddy. What sort of stuff are you editing?
Me too Josh, way over here in South Africa
Art is out of the time!
why a waste?
A Waste was your comment
Good morning Jack !... You showed me two things I haven't seen before...your nifty way to cut circles from one burl and a different way to pour this hybrid..so cool to see new methods...there may be others who've done these things but it's the first time my seeing these exact ways... Beautiful sphere !...I have a healthy collection of gem & mineral spheres..I think I've mentioned the collection before..and your sphere would be right at home..lol...it's a good thing you're so far away and not stateside..heavy sigh... Thank you for the video...have a most excellent weekend...🌿🌿🌿

Very nice piece indeed! Great idea to make a tube of plastic with a cutout for filling from the side rather than top down for the wood pieces used. - Gabriel I
Thanks I seems like the only logical way to do it
Once again you have made a thing of beauty. I can see one now sitting on my shelf with my books. Looks just like a dragon eye so would sit perfectly with my books. Just wish I could have it. Amazing work, keep turning them out 👍👏
Thanks for the kind words m. This piece will be on sale on my website very soon Www.jackmacwoodturning.com
Wow, looking into that ball is like looking into a different world or something. Truly fascinating!
Immer wieder schön zu beobachten, wie so ein Teil entsteht.❤👍
At first, I thought maybe you are making a lamp base but as usual, you surprise and delight me. Otherworldly indeed :) The base was the perfect accessory for the loveliness of the goldfield. Thank you, Jack :)
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Jack, you are an magnificent, superb artist!!!
At first I wasn't sure about yellow, not a favorite color.... It's perfect!! The grain is beyond stunning! Amazingly the thermal cracking only adds more to it.. And to add to the comments about narration......it's VERY ASMR without.. I watch for the enjoyment, I don't want to learn....it's all about the art of creation.
Thanks Patti. I think iv got a good idea of what viewers want to see but it’s always very useful to hear it first hand
I love it ❤ it looks amazing ❤️🇦🇺
Thanks Monique. Glad you like this one 👍🏻
The cracks made it look so much more beautiful and interesting!!!
You have one spectacular ball!👍
Just...WOW!
Thanks H. That’s a mighty impressive beard, how long you been growing it?
@@JackMackWoodturning Actually I've been clean shaven for awhile now. I just like the picture where I looked monk like. And that took the better part of a year to grow. I used to do a lot of woodwork, including turning on a lathe, a lot of years ago. Although I'm recently forced into a wheelchair I hope that one day soon I will be able to turn again. Just need to set the lathe closer to the ground, or get a high chair. Your work is amazing and inspiring. I've already thought of several projects I want to work on now. Including a whole series of exoplanets. I've never worked with or turned epoxy. It looks very exciting to work with. I'm still going through a lot of your videos, I've gotten about half way through including a several hour binge today. I'm hoping to one day use my VA loan and get my own place. Since I can't drive anymore I will have a wood lathe, for sure, in the garage. Thanks for your videos. I might also try and pick your brains for tips on working with different materials.
You do out standing work 👏
Thanks rite. What would you use this for ?
Incrível!... amei, amei !👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Jack Mack... you are THE MASTER of art! This piece is really beautiful! Wow! Just...wow!
Wow thanks for the very kind words Stacey
That is lovely. I’m currently attempting to make a hollow form globe. Wish I’d seen this before I started 🌞
How’s it going so far?
It’s so kind of you to ask. I’ve made a hollow form and put lights in it to take to my Son’s friend in France from the UK. At least he likes the photographs and we travel travel tomorrow. My current project is in two pieces to make into a box in the shape of a globe. I’ve mounted each piece on a base plate with the view of eventually plugging the holes with super glue coloured with pigment. I tried a glue block but it wasn’t successful attached to resin. But it takes me a week to do a days work and I don’t have a jig to make it round. Just as well I have the time 🌞
Creative- Skillful - Beautiful.
Thanks for the kind words
Really stunning.

Wow, that’s beautiful!

Hello Jack. once again a wonderful video with a wonderful work. It is always a pleasure for me to watch you at work. You radiate such calmness that nothing in the world can throw you off balance. And this, apart from your manual skills on the lathe, with a good eye for the artistic element. In this context, I am actually surprised that you approach the resin with a tube. Many other wood turners prefer a parting tool here. But well, in the end I'm still concerned with the question, what do you do with such an object? I too have made some of these “sculptures”, of course not in the same quality as your objects. Then I was asked: "Yes, what should I do with it, what is it good for?" " Then I don't have the answers, and to say, well, that's just art, just enjoy it, is mostly met with incomprehension. I would be interested to know how you think about it. Greetings from Northern Germany
I believe that function of a piece is apparent and self evident once it insights such a conversation about the reason for its being. 😊
I really like the transparent and translucent resins. They add a different dimension to the piece.
Thanks AH. Where are you watching from? Middle Earth?
🙂 Not too dissimilar - mountains of Western North Carolina.
It would be cool to drill a hole up through the wood and put a fiber optic or led light to illuminate the colored area. You are very talented
Great idea. Maybe next time. 😊
Magnifique tout simplement !
😊👍🏻
Шикарная работа, браво 👏

I want this ,to see into the mind of Sauron😂
When I see all this expoxy resin stuff and things the last couple years I can't help but think it's the present day shag carpet.

What? Just kiddin!
I love how the inclusions in the resin make it more interesting.

@@JackMackWoodturning yeah, it goes well with the wood, I think.
Yeah me too. I nearly went for orang but I’m glad I didn’t
Very cool. Nice you can turn it around an enjoy different views of the same object.
Yeah.. can be different every day 👍🏻
You continually come up with interesting and unique turnings that are not only beautifully stunning, but also show case your abilities as an artist. Amazing job Jack!

This is AWESOME!! Can you tell me what you used for that base to pour the epoxy in and add the two wood pieces on the outsides? Maybe I missed it in the video. It just showed up already ready to pour into but I didn't see *how* you created that mold base. Any details on this i would so appreciate. Thank you! I LOVE this! EXCELLENT excellent excellent.🔔
Haha thanks Ellen. Did you like the colour?
Facingworlds ! ! ! Just going Old School
Bravæ Jack! Incredible how you shaped this piece! Thank you so much for using only a slight bit of color in the resin so that beautiful burl spike can be seen!
I’ve been slowly “Unsubscribing” to channel’s that have no narration, as I’m not experienced enough to always understand what’s going on, and I don’t have the time nor inclination to watch vids for entertainment purposes only. That being said, I’m going to keep you around a little longer, as your projects are just so dang interesting. Thanks!
Cool. Glad you like them. Feel free to ask any questions you like. Always happy to help 👍🏻
For me...no narration (yapping) is enjoyable.😊 Often times I mute videos and just absorb the 'show.' Thanks!👍

Stunning piece of work 👍 excellent sir 👌
My heart sank when I saw the cracks in the epoxy, but I think it actually enhances the piece ... stunning!
I know everyone will think this is bollocks but I did it intentionally.. like for real. I felt clear resin is over done and I wanted more Going on innit.. iv cracked many castings unintentionally mind you. 😆
@@JackMackWoodturning You've gone to a whole new level if you did that intentionally ... now even more impressed! Not done any epoxy stuff like this before, but can you generate extra heat by adding extra hardener?
I’m not sure about that.. but I know that if you fill 1.5lt of resin into the pressure pot and then sit the pressure pot in a very warm greenhouse the results are beautiful thermo shatter. In the video you do not see the filling of the cracks. After rough shaping the ball I took a syringe full of clear epoxy and filled the cracks that were visible.. once it start to leak from any of the cracks I covered the crack with thick CA and a quick blast with CA accelerator seals it over instantly.. left over night and you can’t see the openings where cracks run outside… PLUS.. you’ve just bonded the full structure back into one mass. This was my first shot at thermo shattered resin, it’s not going to be my last. 😊
@@JackMackWoodturning Which was my next question, did you full the cracks, because I then thought they'd disappear, but using clear against the tinted would stop that ... brilliant :)
An exquisite work of surreal art. Totally embellished by way of superior craftsmanship.
It's really out of the world. You just think New idea for next job and you have proved that by your creation skills. This one is live example for us. Brilliant brain idea. God bless you!
